High five for toys The best performance in five years saw the UK toy industry reach a whopping £3.2billion in sales in 2015, retaining its position as the largest toy market in Europe. NPD’s Frederique Tutt announced the industry’s performance at the annual press briefing yesterday morning, where she also revealed that the market had grown 5.9 per cent — a year-on-year increase of £150m. The bumper year was partly driven by blockbuster film licences, with Minions, Jurassic World, Marvel’s Avengers and Star Wars.
Golden Bear and Justin Fletcher have shared something of a special partnership over the past few years, and that relationship has been strengthened in a new deal with BBC Worldwide. After striking success with a toy range based on Justin’s alter ego Mr. Tumble and his Something Special series, Golden Bear as been appointed master toy partner for hilarious CBeebies show Justin’s House. The star of the shows himself was on the Golden Bear stand yesterday to announce
the new deal with Golden Bear’s Vice Chair and Director, Christine Nicholls, who told the Daily News: “Kids love engaging with the characters in the show. Our toy is the house itself, and has lots of fun, high energy play value, so children can recreate their own Justin’s House experience at home. Retailers have been very impressed with that authenticity, and how true to the show it is. “The toys will launch AW16, and we have a full TV and online marketing plan, which will roll out in July.”
Chinese whispers! Hopes that British manufacturing will be kick-started by the current economic turbulence in China are behind many of the responses to an online Daily News survey. Half of the respondents believe that the manufacture of toys in China will be notably impacted in the long term, with 30 per cent saying it will happen more quickly.
I’m a celebrity... keep me in here! Having one quarter of something doesn’t sound like a lot — but when it’s a fourth of one of the biggest boy bands around in the shape of Union J’s George Shelley that’s actually pretty good! The 22-year-old caused a media scrum and set a few hearts a-fluttering with his personal appearance at Toy Fair yesterday.

It’s hugs all round on the Golden lden Bear stand as Christine Nichols cuddles uddles up with Duggee to kick off the #duggeehug campaign. Duggee is trying to get as many hugs as possible from Toy Fair air visitors, so be sure to stop by the stand for a warm arm embrace, share it on social media with the hashtag, ashtag, and see the marvellous new additions to the toy line. “Hey Duggee just has such h a lovely feel, and with The Squirrel Club, children can an really engage and feel like they’re part of the gang,” ang,” said Christine. “We’re launching new plush at the show: a Super Duggee in his cape, and Super per Steven the squirrel. With a resurgence in traditional board games, Gibsons has recently relaunched two of its board games from 30 years ago. Launched last year, the Sherlock Holmesthemed 221b Baker Street is “performing exceptionally”, says director of marketing Kate Armitage. Brand new for Toy Fair 2016 and just in time for the FA Cup in the spring is Wembley, a football-themed board game that is headed for the top of the table.

with... Emma Hanlon and Brad Gross How are you capitalising on the trend toward STEM products?
Thames & Kosmos
Emma: We’ve got some new coding products — including a game pad that kids code to make it work as a controller, then they can play with it. When parents are playing hundreds of pounds for games consoles, this is an alternative that kids can have fun with while learning to code. It also gives you an iconic controller. We’ve also got the Robotic Smart Machines and you build the robot with that, download the free app for your device and use that to then programme the robot and play with it.
You’ve added a range of board games — tell us about Thames & Kosmos branching out.
Stand G60 Brad: Our parent company Kosmos are known in Germany for their Euro-style board games, so we are getting involved with that. They’re more than regular board games, they are very strategic and intricate with different levels — Dimension for example has six cards which determine how you build your stackables — and you have to do it under the pressure of time as well. It is still family friendly with an added edge, and players have to think more.
And finally, what is your hot drink of choice? Both: Regular, strong, builders’ tea!
180 years for Galt Galt marked an incredible company milestone with an extraordinary (and very big) cake yesterday, to the delight of all the visitors to their stand. Celebrating 180 years in business, MD John McDonnell cut the cake, which was shaped like several of its best selling products. Established by James Galt in 1836, John says you don’t get longevity like the company has enjoyed without “good quality toys and services.”
New Kit for Rooney TOMY

Speaking about the birth of little Kit, Emma Fryer, Head of UK Marketing at TOMY said: “We are really happy to hear that Coleen Rooney and new baby boy Kit are both healthy. We feel that Kit was born during Toy Fair as he was so excited to see all the new toys. Coleen embodies all the values of Lamaze and has an understanding of how key it is to inspire moments of wonder in children.”

NEWS Her MAJ-esty says... Yesterday was certainly an action-packed day for visitors, exhibitors and media alike. Day Two got off to a great start with media in the halls from early in the morning for exhibitor stories and the press briefing with Phil Ratcliffe, BTHA Chairman and Frederique Tutt from NPD Group as they revealed the industry stats and the trends for the year. It was great to hear how well the industry had done in 2015 with a 5.9 per cent growth to reach £3.2billion in value — the largest toy market in Europe. Coverage kicked off on Good Morning Britain and the press office remained busy all afternoon. Some of the main media in attendance included BBC News, BBC World service, ITN, the Daily and Sunday Express, Daily Star, Daily Mail, The Mail on Sunday, The Independent, Channel 5, Evening Standard, FT, Guardian, The Sun, and The Daily Telegraph and I am looking forward to seeing the coverage today. To get an idea of what coverage has come from Toy Fair visit the clippings wall on the reception of the Press Office on the balcony. You can also see their coverage of the celebrities that were onsite too like George Shelley and Matt Edmondson. Anna Williamson and Gavin Inskip, TFTV presenters, have seen more than 100
exhibitors so far with many more planned for today covering stand visits and the Demo Zone. Today we will be welcoming 120 British university design students who are looking at the toy industry as a possible destination career. Some exhibitors have already arranged stand visits for them, to connect with the toy designers of the future. Before they visit the show floor they will have talks on product development and the LEGO internship programme from LEGO, brand importance from WowMe Design and toy design from Design By Touch. Thank you to all those that are welcoming them on to their stands and for all of you that are able to welcome them to the show as an introduction to our industry. I would like to end as I started on Sunday, by thanking you all for supporting Toy Fair in this difficult year. I can reassure you that Toy Fair is going back to its normal mal days in 2017 — Tuesday 24 January to Thursday sday 26 January — and also normal build and d opening times too (9am–6pm) and I very much look forward to welcoming you back then. n.

“We’ve never been to Toy Fair before, I’m the marketing manager for children and parents and Anna is the marketing executive for children and parents while Claire is the Chrismas Grotto project manager. “We’re looking for two different things. Anna and I organise the Mini Harrods Loyalty Programme, it’s our members’ club for children and parents and we’re looking at organising activity packages and giveaways, so we’re after ideas to make bespoke packages for our members and we’ll work with the toy companies once we’ve decided what we want to do.” “Claire a has a very important job as she’s working on behalf of Father Christmas to see what he can give to the children in Santa’s G Grotto. There’s lots to look at because he has to give presents for all the different ages an and, although it only costs £10 to visit, peop people have quite high expectations because it’s Harrods.”

What’s standing out for you so far? New toys and cross-category licensed product inspired by The Lion King will launch soon while the original TV series, The Lion Guard, will premiere on Disney Junior UK later this year. It will feature new toys, playsets and more from UK licensees GP Flair’s Just Play Division and Posh Paws who will extend the storytelling for pre-schoolers as they play with the new characters as well as long-time favourite Lion King characters including Simba and Nala. The Lion Guard will follow the launch of a special TV film premiere on Monday 8 February at 5.30pm, The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar, and continues the story introduced 20 years ago in the acclaimed Disney animated film, The Lion King. The show will feature new character Kion, the second-born cub of Simba and Nala. Kion assumes the role of leader of the Lion Guard, a group of the bravest and brightest tasked with preserving the Pride Lands. Disney Store will also launch a new The Lion Guard line this spring including soft toys, apparel, stationery, figurine playsets and more. Mike Stagg, SVP, GM integrated retail UK/Ireland & E-Commerce EMEA said: “For generations Disney has created magical stories and characters and The Lion Guard continues this legacy, tapping into the nostalgia parents have for the iconic The Lion King movie. We’re looking forward to the TV movie and series premiere on Disney Junior UK and the ongoing opportunities this property represents for licensing and retailer partners.” In the US, the premiere of The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar on Disney Channel ranked as the number one primetime cable TV telecast of 2015 amongst kids aged 2-5. Disney Junior has gone from strength to strength, and is currently the number one-rated pay TV preschool channel in the UK.

We’ve always been successful in getting balloon products in, and there’s a much wider range available now. By doing this show for the second time this year, I think we’re moving towards understanding what retailers want and what works
Teletubbies, for sure. And also to see PAW Patrol continue to grow. We’re looking now for things we can do for PAW Patrol such as a pink range as the one we have is unisex but is quite red and blue. The write-on balloons are incredible and we’re very strong on milestone ages. We’ve also got the full range of partywear products and a catalogue of 500 SKUs in dressup, with even more accessories as add-ons. We’ve made good furrows into dress up and it’s year round. Every season and topic is covered. We have the right product for World Book Day, and have been promoted through online and retailers, it’s a growing phenomenon and perhaps even adding an extra season.

It is performing very well for us, we have got the full balloon licence and are fortunate to have the classic stuff as well so people are recognising products from the new films as well as from the older films. We’ve got the Storm Trooper, R2-D2 and BB8. We’ve got things that are a little bit different in terms of design — the Millenium Falcon coming out of the side of the Jumbo balloon, and there’s a range of I Sing balloons, one of which is a Star Wars balloon that you tap to play the theme tune! The important thing is that we’re an engineering company, we like to put some research into it. It’s more than just having a Star Wars product – we like to make it true to the film and really add value.

Toymaster Interview
“Brands are key for Toymaster members” The Daily News talk to Toymaster’s Managing Director Ian Edmunds How was 2015 for the toy industry? Last year was much better than we anticipated. We thought it would be difficult to beat 2014 with its Frozen and Loom Band fever but 2015 was great. LEGO was the big driver for success last year — but we also saw PAW Patrol sell very well as well as Sylvanian Families, which re-established itself. In the main, there were lots of really great toys. Licensing in toys continues to grow exponentially — small independent retailers like your members can be sceptical about investing in film licences, however. Do you find this? They are certainly not driven by licensed product. With Toymaster members, brands are absolutely key — it’s the brands, whether LEGO, Shopkins or PAW Patrol — that drive their businesses. So, for example, the core Shopkins’ collectable range is very attractive to our members and sells very well for them but outside of Flair’s core line
of Shopkins, they won’t stock much else — the licensed or peripheral products. Take LEGO, what sells well for the smaller independents is the nonlicensed LEGO like LEGO City, LEGO Friends and LEGO Technic. Most independents have around 15,000 sqm of space so they stick to key lines. If you just look at the Frozen licence, it is massive — last year, it was probably 10 times the size of the year before; retailers can only stock so much product. Arts and crafts and construction are two growing categories. Are you finding this? The arts and crafts category has always done well for our members. Independent retailers tend to stock a lot of arts and crafts versus the size of the category mainly because it’s a successful pick-up product with a great price point so works well for independent toy stores. We are certainly seeing the category of construction in growth. We’ve seen K’Nex re-establish itself and Meccano

Toymaster Interview seems to be doing well again, certainly better than people thought. Magformers has come back and our members seem to like all of these construction brands. It continues to be a challenge to compete with the juggernaut that is LEGO, however.
“
What categories or trends do you see being strong in 2016? I think this year we will continue to see the independent retailer driven by the LEGO brand. With Hasbro taking up Disney this year, it will be interesting to see how they re-invigorate it. PAW Patrol and Shopkins will be strong this year. In the pre-school category, we are hoping to see Teletubbies succeed — it’s certainly priced correctly so we have high hopes for it. Talking of pricing, is it a risk for smaller independents to take on products with a higher price point? Yes. According to NPD stats, the average price of a toy last year was £9. Independent retailers have never been a destination for higher price point toys — 80 per cent of LEGO sold is actually priced under £30. What’s your personal favourite brand or toy? I love LEGO — always have, ever since I was a child. What do you love about this industry? As you can imagine, it’s just such a happy place to work — there’s a constant stream of new product and so much innovation so it’s always exciting and always changing.
I THINK THIS YEAR WE WILL CONTINUE TO SEE THE INDEPENDENT RETAILER DRIVEN BY THE LEGO BRAND. WITH HASBRO TAKING UP DISNEY THIS YEAR, IT WILL BE INTERESTING TO SEE HOW THEY RE-INVIGORATE IT

We talk to Toymaster members — independent retailers up and down the country to discover what’s selling for them and what product they’ve got their eyes on Nikolas Barnes, buyer, Eric Snook Eric Snook has two stores in Bath and in Covent Garden, London “Our Covent Garden store offers off-the-wall things, while our Bath store is a traditional toy shop. I’m mainly buying for the Bath store, which I took charge of nine months ago so visiting the bigger stands like Flair is new for me. While we try to offer something a bit different than the mainstream, we know that to survive we have to feature some of the big-name brands — LEGO is huge for us and Sylvanian Families is doing really well. So far at Toy Fair 2016, I’ve been really impressed by K’Nex, especially the fact they have a range that is more geared towards girls. I’ve also visited Iwako (Gallery 144), which offer Japanese erasers that are popular as collectables.”

Tractor Ted has signed a commercial partnership with Nick Jr. and is showcasing 30-sec and 60-sec promotional clips across the Nick Jr. network! This is a major new partnership for Tractor Ted with the first 3-months already demonstrating a significant referral from both the TV clips and the Nick Jr. digital platform.
“I’ve just seen Tractor Ted on Nick Jr. Wow! So great to see these mini promotional clips on TV introducing the real life farming DVDs that we love so much as a family. Thank you Tractor Ted!” Mrs Spencer, Somerset
Richard Harding, owner, Puff’s Toyshop Puff’s Toyshop is three-years-old and is based in Wymondham, Norfolk “We are more of a traditional toy shop but we are starting to stock some of the big-name brands. In fact, we have just joined Toymaster because we couldn’t get LEGO or Orchard Toys accounts on our own. This is our third year at Toy Fair, we were excited to see the new Lottie dolls including Lottie in Space and we want to stock more of the Shopkins range and extend our Sylvanian Families line, the latter does really well for us. “At the moment we hold traditional licences such as Peter Rabbit and The Gruffalo, the modern kids’ classics; it’s difficult for small stores to get licences because they often want you to take, say, five product ranges, when you only want two. We do really well on collectables, especially Zomlings and Pokémon. “For the past six months, we’ve stocked Hexbug, these have flown off the shelves; and not just the little ones but the sets. At first, we thought it was just a Christmas thing but they’re still doing well. What does amazingly g y well for
us, which I haven’t seen any other toy shop do — wherever I go, I visit the local toyshop — is the Bigjigs loose rail display. It consists of all different wooden rail pieces in different plastic trays that can be bought individually, it’s massive for us. Finally, we took a chance on Magformers recently, which has done magnificently well for us, especially the Set.” e WOW Set.

Shopkins is undoubtedly one of the industry successes of the past two years and has now just launched season 4. It is fair to say that Shopkins’ popularity
sees absolutely no signs of abating. Having seen the development on stand there is a lot on the horizon for fans which takes the Shopkins characters into new areas including; the world of the Shoppies — the character dolls that collect their own Shopkins and the recent introduction of Petkins. Tell us more. Kirsty: “The constant innovation is keeping Shopkins incredibly fresh. We believe this is one of the most important factors in launching and growing a collectable. Kirsty: “Season 5 won’t be many months away with a fresh basket full of characters. This is at the core of the Shopkins business but where the brand goes from there is really exciting. Much of this is still under wraps but it certainly is going to take the fans to a new happy place or places! We can’t wait to unveil to retail what’s in store.” Shopkins isn’t the only girls’ collectable for Flair — what else do you have? Kirsty: “2016 will mark the return of Puppy in My Pocket. This brand has been a favourite of girls for many years and we intend to return it to its collectable best. There will be mini and micro puppies from all the most popular breeds reproduced with incredible detail. Kitty in My Pocket will follow. So were you surprised to receive the award for the second year running? Kirsty: “It’s always a welcome surprise. Needless to say we were delighted to be named collectable brand of the year again but it’s been a real team effort between us and Moose, together with our retailer partners. Engaging with the audience has also been key to the success and Flair has used their entire breadth of marketing to reach the collectors and to support retailers.”
So marketing and retail support is a key factor, is that the case with Shopkins? Verity: “We certainly have not rested on our laurels when it comes to Shopkins. From the outset we engaged with retailers to ensure sampling was at a height, and with each launch heavy TV and digital has been in place. We’ve not relied on past success though and have

Toy Fair exhibitors are being reminded that the Dad’s Choice Awards open in February. The team behind the awards works hard to find the perfect dad testers to match each entry and each product is rigorously tested by the parent and their children, then evaluated against a set of core criteria. Any brand lucky enough to win a coveted Dad’s Choice Award is then able to use the logos on packaging, websites and other social media channels. Organiser David Ross said: “We love promoting dads playing more with their children. Each year we are blown away by the standard of entries and, with 17 different categories, we truly offer a wide selection of products to advise other dads what to buy.” Dad’s Choice Awards 2016 can be entered online and award entries close in September. The continued development of products with a unique point of difference – 2015 was a great year for new developments that saw traditional toy lines bring added value in innovation, giving consumers more for their money. Also with strong licensing performances in 2015 and from some of the evergreens showing good growth like Peppa, again this area should perform well in 2016. Stewart Middleton, MD, Jumbo Games
Stand E125 “This is Thom Boddington, our expert demonstrator — in his day job he’s the manager at the Snowzone in Milton Keynes so he knows what he’s doing, he has the right balance and skills. The RipSurf has only got two wheels but, unlike skateboards where you have to scoot to keep going, you don’t have to step off until you want to stop. The two wheels allow you to manoeuvre and keep going as when surfing. You can cut and carve — well they can, I couldn’t do it! — like on a real surfboard and apparently it’s the closest feeling to real surfing.”

Do you do a lot of buying or planning for the year ahead at the show? Planning yes definitely, it’s probably the perfect showcase to have a look at the proposed ranges for the year. It does give you a good idea of what to look out for, what merchandise will be out.
Which stands are you excited about going to?
E E F F COREAK B
Obviously the LEGO stand is very high up on our list. Other than that, most are on par with each other. For me, it is important to see what brands and licences are standing out on the main stands. Based on last year, Spin Master is one I am keen to see.
Any licences or products you are really looking forward to seeing? Naturally anything that is related to movies is a big thing. Shopkins and PAW Patrol both had very strong years in 2015 so it will be interesting to see how they go forward in 2016. You hear of new items and products coming out in 2016 so it will be interesting to see how much they are backed by suppliers.

Stand GH63 Best thing about Toy Fair? ? What is exciting you about Toy Fair?
What are you hoping to achieve from the fair?
Well it’s the first time that I’ve been here, hence the Green House, it’s new territory.
To gain more customers and to get our name out there. We’re very new — last year was our first full trading year as well as our first year of doing trade shows. In theory here at Toy Fair is the perfect place to be.
You’re top products for this year? Without a doubt our bestseller for last year are the 2-in-1 mini balance bikes — so you set them up as a trike and then, after a while, convert them to a bike. So that is our most exciting and leading product. We do a big range of sustainable bamboo products which are becoming more and more popular. We have a new balance bike coming in four colours that’s suitable for little legs. It’s important it to make products that last.
What is your favourite brew? Definitely tea.
And how do you dunk your biscuits? I don’t … I’m definitely anti that but I’ll have a chocolate digestive on the side or maybe a Hobnob.
It’s good to see all the major UK K suppliers in one place. There is a buzz about it and since ce it has moved back to Olympia it has that feel of being ing the Toy Fair we all know and love.
What are your top products this year? Licence-wise, it’s PAW W Patrol, The Secret Life of Pets and d I love the look of Trolls. Rebecca Rees, Head of Marketing and Licensing,, The Entertainer

Ready for launch A new face for many in the industry, Autel Robotics is looking to take the drones sector to new heights and are making their Toy Fair debut. The Daily News found out more from Matthias Hahn. Sales Director, Europe
Eye in the sky The X-Star and X-Star Premium capture imagery in stunning 4K resolution with an integrated camera for incredible aerial photography and video capture. You can also follow the action live through a paired smart device. Stop by the stand to see some amazing footage for yourself.
We have function keys on the command sticks which makes picking one of our drones up and w flying f them really simple; anyone can fly them without w any previous training practice. The easy start s and land buttons makes the drones take off and an land on their own, which can be tricky for first timers, ti and the return to home button will ensure that th it always comes back.
You’re a new entrant to the toy industry, explain a bit about yourself for those that are unfamiliar with Autel Robotics. Autel was founded in 2004 and we’re well known as a specialist in car diagnostics. One day the boss decided to make drones, and so last year we founded Autel Robotics. We took our existing expertise and our engineers developed the range that you can see on our stand here at the show. So what makes 2016 the right time for you to make your debut? This is the first time that the UK trade can see the products in the flesh. This is really our first major showing to retailers and distributors here, so it’s been a great opportunity to introduce ourselves and the drones. How have you found the show so far? Has Toy Fair lived up to your expectations? Absolutely, I’d say it’s been a very successful show. This is the first time we’re here, and you have to remember that we’re a new company with a new product and brand. We’ve had some good interest already, so for a first showing we’re very pleased. Who are you hoping to attract to the stand? What we are really looking for is a distributor for the UK. It would be great to partner with a distributor that has prior knowledge and understanding of drones that can explain why they’re great and really sell them. But it could also be really interesting to work with a company that is looking to expand into this category for the first time, and bring a fresh approach to it.
What makes the drones stand out? We have three different drones: X-Star Go, X-Star and X-Star Premium, each with different features and price points. They’re cool toys for big boys, and they’re not inexpensive, but we’re still competitive in the market. The quality speaks for itself, and the technology that we have incorporated inside them makes them simple for anyone to fly, but with lots of impressive features. I think the designs themselves are masterpieces in their own right — and I think it’s a nice touch that we offer them in both a striking orange and white, as well. And what about from a technological stand point? Tell us about what they can do when consumers get them in their hands.
What W makes Autel drones stand out in what is an increasingly in competitive market? It’s actually very, very difficult — almost impossible It — to lose these drones. Our exclusive SecureFly technology ensures that even if there is magnetic te interference, all of our X-Star drones retain satellite in positioning, giving you plenty of time to bring it p back to safety. We also have a special display on b the command sticks for star pre-flight checks. That th feeds into our drones being simple for anyone to use, allowing users to check everything is safe and ready for take off. In terms of marketing support, do you have anything planned or in place? We are a streamlined company, with a very flat management structure, and that allows us to react very quickly. So if a retail or distribution partner needs marketing brochures with customised branding on them we can do that. If a shop only wants to carry two of our three options, we can make the marketing materials fit that. If someone asks us for a demo desk with Autel Robotics on it, we can make that happen too — and we can do it quickly. The companies we’re meeting here at Toy Fair are the experts in the market, so we want to listen to, and work with, them.

Distributor Focus
Stand B4 :
Easy as A.B.Gee With a striking selection of some of the biggest toy brands, and cross-category choice, A.B.Gee is making a name for itself as a one-stop shop for retailers of all sizes. Daily News found out more from Adrian Holmes, the sales manager Now the dust has settled a little, how was business in 2015? Last year was a challenging one to start with as we had the repercussions of the 2014 craze to replace with regards to turnover. As official distributor of Loom Bands, we had quite a hole to fill, but this was the same with other companies who ran “inspired by” versions. Luckily enough for us as a Hasbro distributor the world was treated to the two largest film releases in a long while with Jurassic World and a little-known film Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which helped in the middle and back end respectively. The year also saw the birth of TV advertising within A.B.Gee. Guess The Fake party game and the bedtime pal Storidoo represent a more positive shift by our company to take a more proactive stance towards
sales in the UK. So far the reaction has been good and we intend to keep the momentum in 2016. Our website has some major benefits for retailers: ● Product count ● 365-day access ● Updated daily ● Exclusive offers ● Instant back order reports Were there any highlights or stand out moments for A.B.Gee last year? Yes, we signed and completed a trading agreement with Home Retail Group for a few of our exclusive distribution lines,
“
OUR STRENGTH IS OUR ABILITY TO OFFER A GREAT RANGE OF PRODUCTS, IN SINGLES OR MANAGEABLE VOLUMES TO ANY INDEPENDENT STORE
”
including remote control and wooden items. One other highlight was signing as UK distribution partner for Science4You, which will also be taken by Home Retail Group. What were your top three selling ranges in 2015? Hasbro’s Star Wars, Mattel’s Disney Frozen and Hornby’s trains.
Distributor Focus distribution or our own import must have: • A competitive place in the market • Good continuity of supply chain • Product life longevity • High quality versus impressive retail price • Ethically sourced and background checked What do you have that’s brand new for 2016? We have a new range of plush dinosaurs that are launching here at Toy Fair, plus a great extension to our existing range of wooden items including a space rocket, pirate ship and dock yard inspired toys. Our RC offering and outdoor ranges have plenty of new additions to keep them fresh also. How important are licensed toys to A.B.Gee? Extremely important is the short answer. As distributors for the largest companies in the world, we would be silly to ignore them. It’s these licences that really drive young children and teenagers to the stores we supply — just look at how Thomas & Friends has been going. What qualities do you look for when sourcing new product? Any new product we undertake either through wholesale, exclusive
Is there any product category you don’t yet offer, but would like to in the future? No, not really. We believe A.B.Gee has one of, if not the, best mixture of product offerings in the marketplace. Where else allows you to pick up a packet of envelopes, a Hornby train, plastic kits, WWE figures, Pie Face, Thomas & Friends, Star Wars, pocket money lines? I could go on.
What gives A.B.Gee its competitive edge? Our ability to distribute any product in any volume throughout the UK and Ireland with 24-48 hours. These orders can consist of many items available in singles that you cannot buy from direct sources in such low pack sizes. We have a very strong sales force covering every corner of the UK by either a weekly call from our internal sales support team, a field-based representative, or by using our always on website for ordering around the clock all year round. We also keep extensive stocks of all of our major brands in order to maintain supply efficiently. This is what matters when it comes down to the crunch. How do you fit in with the needs of independent retailers? A.B.Gee’s strength is our ability to offer a range of products, but in singles of manageable volumes to any independent store, whether starting out or just looking for a few top ups, and without having to meet a large carriage-paid order amount.
You distribute for some of the world’s biggest manufacturers and brands. How do you develop these relationships and what makes you the ideal partner for them? For many years A.B.Gee has built its strengths through some common core beliefs. We believe in maintaining strong ties with our main suppliers through daily contact, utter transparency throughout our business, and constant analysis so we can supply data at a moment’s notice that could aid any decisions for the future.

NEWS What are your top products this year? John McDonnell, Managing Director, Galt Toys Galt Toys will bring double the fun to Toy Fair by launching the very first 2-In-1 Playnest. Our original award-winning Playnest is still hugely popular with parents and children, as a safe environment where babies can play and learn. This new Playnest is dual designed with a soft resting area for very young babies on one side and a secure play environment on the other. For parents, this extends the longevity of the product, as the soft velour resting area cradles a young baby from birth over the inflatable ring. As the child gets older and is able to support itself when sitting up, the playnest can be turned over and the baby or toddler can sit inside the ring. The ring is surrounded by the same great multi sensory features to stimulate touch, vision and hearing. This is just one of the many new product launches we’ll be showcasing on stand E9 at the show, we’re right at the front of the exhibition hall by the entrance so be sure to pop by and see for yourself!

How smart are your toys? David Ross, the founder of technology website HEXUS.net, looks at the rise and rise of tech-based toys Gone are the days when toys were merely plastic. Today’s must-have toys are cleverer than ever before, sometimes filled with more computing power than used on the Apollo space missions to the Moon. The commoditisation of technology through the rise of cheap, ubiquitous processing means that toys will inevitably become smarter. The proliferation of sensors and low-power processors — loosely called the Internet of Things (IOT) — will impact upon premium toys in a big way. We have already seen this change take place in 2015, the year of the drone. These drones use various sensors and energy-efficient processors for simple navigation. The annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, held at the start of each year, was chock-full of all manner of drones manufactured from companies spread across the globe, with the promise of many more to come in 2016. Hoverboards surely haven’t escaped your attention, and these have simple sensors and mini-computers inside. What about entry-level tablets designed specifically for children? The waterfall effect of technology will imbue even the most basic of these tablets with the kind of performance previously seen on premium phones and tablets of just a few years ago. The possibilities for improving education are almost endless. Virtual reality, too, is set to become a key driver of toys and games. As the technology matures for the adult version of headsets, expect to see many more childrenspecific headsets appear, offering a glimpse of an immersive environment that will change the way children play games. And all this technology is aimed towards a specific purpose: interactivity. This two-way street, where the toys and games in some way interact with the user, is set to become the norm rather than the exception. Fantastic in terms of improving education and enhancing motor skills, not to mention being utterly compelling to play, the most desirable toys of the next few years are going to become almost as smart as you!

Toy Fair 2016 opens the industry doors to students Today, the BTHA will play host to 120 students from universities around the country who will participate in their annual design seminar. The seminar, now in its seventh year, gives talented young design students the opportunity to hear from leading names in the toy design community. The BTHA will be welcoming students from the University of Portsmouth, University of Sussex, University of Brighton, Kingston University, Brunel University, London Metropolitan University and Sheffield Hallam University. This year students are fortunate enough to hear from the world’s leading toy company LEGO. Klaus Elias Nielsen, LEGO’s Student Frontend, will take students through the product development process whilst Ruben Romijnders, former intern and current junior designer, will give students an insight into working on the LEGO internship programme and life in Billund. The students will also find out from Paul Boucher, Creative Director at Design by Touch, what it’s like working for a toy design consultancy, as well as gaining insights into the importance of branding and packaging for toys from Andy White and Chris Brown of WowMe. “Toy Fair is the perfect place to show off the industry to the next generation of toy designers,” said Kerri Atherton, Communications & Public Affairs Officer at the BTHA.
