ello and welcome to the January 2020 issue of Gifts Today, the first issue of a new decade. Just as we recover from the frantic rush of Christmas retail, it’s time to look ahead to the shows and all that is new. With the election behind us and the Brexit process underway, let’s hope we’ll experience more stable times in the months ahead. That certainly seems to be the wish of the forecasters at Pantone who have named shade 19-4052, Classic Blue, as their Colour of the Year. They suggest the colour instills ‘calm, confidence and connection’ and that it creates a ‘stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era.’ Let’s hope so! Putting together this issue, I’ve had a sneak peek at some of the new trends and products that will be revealed at the first shows of the year, and can guarantee there’s lots of amazing stuff to discover. We have previews and news from a host of upcoming shows including Top Drawer, Christmas & Gift, Giving & Living and London Toy Fair. We kick off the first issue of the year with a look at eco and sustainable gifts that don’t cost the earth. Caring for the environment is now a mainstream concern, and large and small retailers have become increasingly aware of the public’s desire for items that are better for the environment. Whether it’s soaps, candles or stationery, there are sustainable gifts for everyone. Read our feature on page 18 and, rest assured, this is an issue we will return to a lot over the coming year. Do drop me an email if you have any news to share on this topic. Our cover stars this issue are Village Candle. They’re one of the largest candle brands in the world and, as I’m sure you’re aware, had a major relaunch in the UK market last year that has allowed them to strengthen old relationships and build new ones. I

wholeheartedly recommend you take a look at their offering for seasonal launches, true-to-life fragrances, and great customer support, by turning to page 16. This issue, of course, includes our annual candle feature. We focus on this part of the home fragrance market because, it seems, everyone loves candles. In fact the average Brit buys an average of six candles a year at £7.40 a pop, according to research by Vend, with candle-buying spiking around Mother’s Day in March as well as over the festive period. Candles aren’t just about ‘hygge’ and getting cosy – it seems we still love to burn them even as the lighter evenings come, with the fragrances and vessels playing an incredibly important part of the experience. We have plenty of candle inspiration from the likes of Ashleigh & Burwood, Price’s Candles and Wax Lyrical in this issue, starting on page 23. A highlight of my month was chatting to Memet Bunyan, head buyer at the London Transport Museum shop, and you can read my interview with him on page 20. The Museum tells the story of London and its transport over the past 200 years and Memet explains how inspiring he finds the archive he uses for inspiration. Two thirds of the merchandise available instore and online is specially commissioned by him and his team, and covers fashion accessories, toys, artworks and more. Thank you for reading and advertising in Gifts Today – we really appreciate it and value our role within this resilient and creative industry. In the meantime, before the shows get into full swing, I wish you a happy, profitable January and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the shows ahead.

We kick off the first issue of the year with a look at eco and sustainable gifts that don’t cost the earth

2019 Benevolent Society Christmas Ball A charity auction raised over £35,000 at the British Allied Trades Federation’s Christmas Benevolent Society Ball at The St John‘s Hotel, Solihull. A one-of-a-kind bespoke silver bowl designed by esteemed silversmith, Andrew Macgowan, was eventually secured by the BATF for their Silver Collection after some fierce bidding. The piece was made from over a kilo of hallmarked Britannia Silver that was donated by Umicore and features diamonds donated by jewellery brokers diamondsplease.co.uk. The hugely successful tombola and raffle were generously supported, as always, by The Giftware Association.

Parlane turns 50 Parlane is proud to have been delivering home accessories and gifts exclusively to the trade for an incredible half a century. Parlane now offers a complete home solution that creates a lifestyle feel in their showrooms and at trade shows, sparking customers’ imaginations more than ever and setting the scene for Parlane to become one of the UK’s leading suppliers of interior accessories. parlane.co.uk

Joanne, a member of Gifts Today’s Retailers’ Panel, won the award in a ceremony held at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Coventry Telegraph Business Awards. ‘I was thrilled with the win,’ said Joanne. ‘We have received entries from an amazing array from some of the best businesses across Coventry and Warwickshire,’ Jeremy Vine told the audience. ‘Our judges certainly had a difficult time choosing from such a high calibre of entries. To have reached this far in the process is a real achievement in itself.’

Licensing News IFL Science x One Tree Planted Licensing Link has partnered with SHO to raise funds for the global reforestation charity. SHO was founded in 2014 with a mission of ensuring every human on planet earth uses reusable products rather than single-use items. The campaign, instigated by Louis Kennedy for the IFLScience brand will launch two limited edition designs of their stainless steel reusable bottles. Ten per cent of the sales of the new SHO lines will be donated to One Tree Planted – an environmental nonprofit dedicated to global reforestation. The activity, which is set to launch in time for Earth Month in April 2020, will be promoted via IFLScience, One Tree Planted and also SHO’s social media channels. Chris Taday, director, Licensing Link, says: ‘This trio of brands each has sustainability and the natural world at the core of their business. Bringing them together for the campaign during Earth Month, will help to leverage each of their efforts.’

William Morris at Lesser & Pavey The giftware company has introduced a new William Morris range that captures the original designs, class and quality of the artwork, presenting these desirable illustrations in practical forms for the home. On show to buyers at both Harrogate Christmas & Gift in January and Spring Fair in February, the Compton range with its dark blue background and baby blue leaf design, surrounds new ranges of tinware, fine ceramics and true environmentally-friendly bamboo items. A range called Golden Lily, with a striking red and blue colour scheme, will also be launched this spring.

Signare bags Frida Kahlo A range of licensed tapestry bags and accessories collection from British company Signare, with worldwide distribution, will be revealed at Spring Fair. There are two ranges, each with 10 pieces covering everyday, evening and travel pieces. Maria Strid, Owner Art Ask Agency, who shared the news, says: ‘I really love these special products and Frida is in great company at Signare as they also do licensed ranges of Jane Austen and the V&A.’ The Frida Kahlo licensing program continues to grow and, outside of the classic licensed products, now includes items such as Christmas baubles, jewelry, a Barbie Doll, hand-embroidered denim jackets, flower pots, wine and even a rose.

Poetic Brands makes ASOS customers smile Fashion & functionality Optical solutions specialist, Opticaid, has launched its first licensed collection of reading glasses and credit card blocker wallets in collaboration with iconic British brand, I Like Birds. The venture coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Leeds-based family business. Opticaid director, Gillian Marchbank said: ‘We met I Like Birds’ founder, Stuart Cox, at Brand Licensing 2018 and decided we wanted to create our first licensed collection with him. We are obviously very new to licensing and he really held our hand throughout the entire design process. It wasn’t just a case of buying the images and off you go, he designed each individual pair of glasses for us and we’re really thrilled with the result.’ opticaid.net

Licensed clothing specialist, Poetic Brands, has again partnered with ASOS, the destination fashion retailer for young adults, for a new collection of clothing and accessories featuring the much loved and globally recognised Smiley brand. The Reclaimed Vintage line includes strikingly designed sweatshirts, joggers and hoodies, aimed at a twenty-something unisex audience. The range also incorporates accessories including a bag and a hat. The unmistakable yellow stylised face is set on a monochrome palette to create a unique and arresting offering. Elliot Matthews, Director of Poetic Brands, says: ‘The new Reclaimed Vintage X Smiley range embodies the ethos of the Smiley Company with its fun, edgy, instantly recognisable designs. The range takes on the heritage of the Smiley brand, while keeping the product offering on-trend and relevant to young adult fashionistas. We’re delighted to be working with ASOS again as the perfect retailer for the collection.’

Giving & Living 2020 A visit to the Giving & Living trade show between Sunday 12 and January 15 is the South West’s largest gifts and merchandising event where you’ll discover the very latest trends in personalised gifts and home accessories set to hit the shops in the year ahead. Everything from cups to cards, fossils to furnishings, jewellery to jams and silver to sunglasses will be on show, enabling canny trade buyers to spot the goods that will drive their sales in 2020 - and see which of the great gifts on display would be perfect for branding and personalising. Giving & Living takes place, at Westpoint, just outside Exeter, and once again over 200 exhibitors from across the West and further afield will be showcasing a huge range of beautifully crafted gifts and unusual home accessories. The show provides a uniquely relaxed and convivial environment where retail buyers can meet with suppliers and manufacturers to make those all-important purchasing selections for the year ahead, negotiate terms and build valuable personal relationships. Because it’s an annual event, visitors will be able to look ahead at items they’ll want to stock for Easter, Mother’s Day and summer – not forgetting christenings, birthdays and anniversaries.

Some popular features will also add to the mix: Speakers Corner will provide a platform for trade experts and exhibitors to impart their knowledge; sustainable and Fairtrade items will figure large, marked as ‘Naturally’; an exciting range of new exhibitors will be presenting their wares for the very first time in the ‘Newcomers’ area; there’s a ‘Designed and Made in Britain’ category for those keen to source local; and the Coastal Path is perfect for retailers searching for gifts and accessories inspired by sun, sand and sea. Sourcing products online can never compete with seeing and feeling products that you then know will appeal to your customers – and the only way to do that is at Giving & Living. givingliving.co.uk

Exhibition News Platinum for Harrogate In 1949, Harrogate Christmas & Gift, formerly know as Harrogate International Toy Fair, opened its doors for the very first time – and in 2020 celebrates 70 years as a leading UK festive and gift trade industry event Those who haven’t already made an acquaintance with Harrogate Christmas & Gift would be forgiven for thinking that this is a trade show just for festive products – and if that is your area of business, then this is absolutely the event for you. However, with seven halls of the Harrogate Convention Centre packed with goodies not only for Christmas, but for absolutely every gifting occasion imaginable from Hanukkah and Eid, Mother’s and Father’s Day, baby showers and Christenings, Easter, Halloween, birthdays… the list goes on. It appears that there is always a good reason to buy a gift and have a party, so if you are a retailer trying to capture your customers’ imagination with something a little bit special and different to loosen their purse strings, then you really cannot afford to miss this event.

A Culinary Christmas… Culinary Concepts Hall M, stand 24

Shopping in the UK has evolved in the last decade and because of the changing consumer landscape, bricks and mortar stores have had to adapt. It’s all too easy to purchase much of what you need online, so those heading out to the shops are looking for much more than to simply purchase products – they want an experience. Garden centres have beautiful themed displays with products and gifts for every occasion including books and toys, food and drink, puzzles and candles, pet products and apparently the new thing this year is the ‘pet Santa grotto’ so the family pooch can enjoy its day out as much as the kids. Visitor attractions such as theme parks, heritage centres and even cathedrals which open their doors to the public are also making much more of their gift shops offering a range of exciting items to tempt their audiences rather than the odd keyring or pencil. harrogatefair.com

Over the past three years, the Culinary Concepts’ Christmas Collection has gone from strength to strength and 2020 has seen the launch of their biggest-ever collection to date. From exquisite hanging decorations and baubles to cheerful garlands, their luxurious decorations have all been beautifully designed and crafted, with vintage styling, etched glass and elaborately beaded decorations all taking centre stage this year. They’ve also extended their festive collections to feature stylishly enamelled stars, hearts and reindeer, intricately etched glass jars and perfume bottles plus a whole new range of glass and jewel studded tea light holders to add a warming glow to the wintry evenings. With further additions to the ever-popular Stag range including majestic candle stands, punch bowls and hurricanes, you’re sure to find everything you’ll need to create a truly magical display this festive season. Visit them at the Christmas Home and Gift Fair to see their full Christmas Collection for yourself. Be sure to ask about the special show offers that are available exclusively to this show. s one of the largest candle brands in the world, the relaunch last year of Village Candle in the UK market has allowed them to build long-lasting relationships with their customers, old and new. So what sets them apart in this competitive UK market? Their approach to the UK market is simple; placing the customer at the heart of everything they do. Village Candle uses the highest quality materials and ingredients when creating their candles. Their food-grade paraffin wax, quality soy-wax blend, and hand-trimmed cotton wicks are featured throughout their range of products, providing an even and clean burn with strong

fragrance throw. The burn time is long and consistent with up to 170 hours for the large jar - approximately 40 hours longer than other candle jars of the same size on the market. They are confident that once a customer burns a Village Candle, they are unlikely to burn another candle brand again.

ou’ll experience mood-evoking, true-tolife fragrances throughout their breadth of products and collections. Last year their classic two-wick traditions jar received a fresh new look, with a modern metal lid that has

been warmly received by their customers. This offers a point of difference in such a competitive market. Their seasonal collection takes inspiration from global style and fragrance trends so they’re always introducing fresh fragrances that are desirable, relevant, and creative. This season, they’ve found many consumers are in pursuit of a quieter life and an overall feeling of less pressure to be anywhere and everywhere. It is all about being in the moment, celebrating the simpler things and enjoying the time you have to yourself. Whether you’re having breakfast in bed, writing handwritten notes to loved ones, relaxing in the afternoon sunlight or even having a pool party – Village are inspired by the stillness of those ‘perfect’ summer moments. With all of this in mind, Life’s ‘Time-Out’ Moments is the inspiration for their spring/summer 2020 collection, featuring fragrances such as Wild Berry Freeze, Summer Vibes, Toes in The Sand, and Herb Garden. With a fresh brand look, new products, and a commitment to building strong business partnerships – Village’s best-selling ingredient is to remain authentic to its heritage, be consumerfocused and embrace change to bring the highestquality products to market.

Eco-friendly/sustainable gifts

Taking action on sustainability With a study by Hyve Group confirming that the UK retail industry is passionate about taking action on sustainability, it’s clear this issue has rocketed up the retail agenda in recent years with brands and retailers looking for ways to reduce their impact on the environment

Museums & Galleries

T

here are lots of new developments in Museums & Galleries gift product offer for spring 2020, with a flurry of new product formats in their notebook and journals, stationery and gifts sections. Two of the most noteworthy are new loosely-coordinating colour pencil sets and cotton pencil cases. There are four different coloured pencil boxes. Each set of coloured pencils is attractively presented in a printed outer box with a window display. Both the pencils and the box are made of FSC wood and card. The sets make a great licensed gift. Buyers can choose from: classic Paddington Bear, Edward Lear’s quirky birds from the V&A Museum, Flamingos from BBC Earth, and Dinosaurs from the Natural History Museum. Suggested retail is £9.99. The soft and stylish printed cotton pencil cases are made from organic cotton, with a smart black inner lining and coloured zip fastening. These make great branded licensed gifts - designs include images from BBC Earth, the V&A Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the British Museum. The cases are ideal on-the-go containers for the new coloured pencils, as well as M&G’s wider selection of HB pencils and gift ballpoint pens. The cotton pencil cases have a suggested retail of £11.99.

S

ustainability is big news, with a study for the Hyve Group, organisers of Spring & Autumn Fair and Pure London, revealing retailers’ attitudes towards building more sustainable business models. ‘Our study confirms that the UK retail industry is passionate about taking action on sustainability,’ says Julie Driscoll, UK Regional Director for Hyve Group. ‘However, there are significant barriers to overcome. To achieve true sustainability takes significant, resources, time and investment, arguably, it’s a continuous process for improvement, rather than a destination. Retailers aren’t shying away from that responsibility, but they are being realistic when it comes to how quickly the change can happen.’ The study, part of a survey of nearly 2000 national and independent UK retailers, revealed that 77% of retailers have already made sustainability-focused changes to their operations, with two thirds believing it will take them three years or more to achieve true sustainability in their business. What is clear is that UK retailers hope to increase the number of sustainable products they stock by a third before the end of 2020. Sustainability has been a big concern for the gift industry over

the past 12 months, with an Eco Trail at September’s Top Drawer curated by GA Chairman Jeremy Corner and Mary Portas on the Inspiring Retail stage at Autumn Fair commenting that in future ‘only sustainability will matter. It will be the biggest leveller.’ At Autumn Fair 2019, sustainability was the big focus, with organisers continuing the Power of One initiative from Spring Fair to encourage greater sustainable action across the industry. Speaking about the show’s sustainability credentials, Event Director Jessica Dawnay said: ‘Many of our visitors are looking for ways that they can be 100% sustainable within the next two years. That’s why our Power of One campaign has been so crucial in demonstrating to visitors that we can all make a difference, no matter how big or small. We think this is only going to continue to grow as a trend, so for 2020 we’re even going to have dedicated trend showcases featuring only the most sustainable products for buyers to look at.’

THE 2020 COLLECTION

‘The UK retail industry is passionate about taking action on sustainability’ When it comes to giftware, companies offering eco-conscious and sustainable products have gone mainstream. For example, Heaven Scent, founded in 1993, was always about ethical trading, minimal packaging, vegan candle ingredient, natural ingredients where possible and recycled packaging. New kids on the block sustainable stationery company Vent for Change is expanding its stationery range with more UK-made raw, recycled notebooks launching at Top Drawer in 2020. All items are made from recycled or certified sustainable sources and are designed by the company’s founder Evan Lewis and his team. Changes are everywhere. Christmas 2019 was the last one John Lewis & Partners and Waitrose & Partners sold Christmas crackers with plastic toys inside. Crackers in 2020 will be filled with toys made from recyclable materials such as metal and paper games, and decorated with techniques such as embossing rather than plastic glitter. Dan Cooper, Partner and head Christmas buyer at John Lewis said: ‘One of the challenges I face as a buyer is that we plan 18 months ahead so it takes time for changes to become a reality. I’m always searching for new, more sustainable products which will make Christmas sparkle but won’t end up spoiling our environment.’ One giftware company, Shared Earth, has put a 10% ‘climate crisis levy’ on products imported by air and to all products made of plastic. Shared Earth is also working with suppliers to develop alternative, more sustainable materials. In addition, a self-imposed 10% levy will be applied to all travel made by air by Shared Earth staff.

RETAIL INTERVIEW: London Transport Museum shop

Going underground Located slap bang in the heart of London’s Covent Garden, London Transport Museum’s shop offers an incredible range of merchandise based on public transport, two thirds of which is specially commissioned for the store. Editor Sally Norton caught up with head buyer Memet Bunyan to talk trains, toys, gifts, posters and more

M

emet Bunyan is the main buyer at London Transport Museum, offering transport-related merchandise for the Museum shop, situated in the Grade II-listed Flower Market building in Covent Garden Piazza. With 12 years in the role, he has overseen some major changes in the Museum’s offering, for both bricks and mortar and online. Memet, what’s your career journey? I came from the National Gallery where I was retail manager. Before I went into retail, I did a degree in photography and film at university, and it’s wonderful to use these visual skills in my job now.

Transport Museum tells the story of London and its transport over the past 200 years. Take our poster collection, for instance. Commissioning for these started at the beginning of the 20th century, using amazing artists and designers, and we have over 5000 in our collection. I often go into our archive for inspiration and ideas and, every time, I come out amazed at what we have. We have just developed a new range based on sporting posters covering tennis, rugby, football and The Boat Race, choosing ones from the 1920s.

What makes your job so special? I love the creative aspect. London

How important are toys in your offering? When I started we offered mainly off-the-shelf toys, but this has changed, and the majority of the toys we sell now are exclusives. The first ones we developed exclusively for the Museum were with Leicester-based company Peterkin, with whom we have a good working relationship. Our first die-cast toys were a Tube train and a Routemaster bus, and these have been in our Top 5 bestsellers ever since. We also develop other exclusive and environmentally-friendly wooden toys. We produce Fairtrade ones with Lanka Trade in the UK, which are then produced in Sri Lanka, where the producers get a fair share of the income. We’ve also worked with Big Jigs for nearly 10 years. The first thing I worked on with them was our City of London Wooden Train Set, featuring iconic London buildings, such as the London Eye, Tower Bridge and Houses of Parliament, using sustainable wood. This is one of the best lines I’ve developed. Off the back of this product’s success, we introduced other lines, like our wooden Underground trains in a variety of Tube line colours. These work really well for both our Covent Garden and online shop.

‘Our first diecast toys were a Tube train and a Routemaster bus, and these have been in our top 5 bestsellers ever since’ from the classic Routemaster buses, and we worked on this project with UK-based company, Yarto Europe. We have a wide range of price points, starting at £3+ for pocket money toys. Overall, the gift selection is priced at £10-£15. We also go up to £2500 for special one-off items, such as the original Upton Park enamel sign we recently

sold when the station was refurbished. Working with Transport for London, we also sell vintage originals which have been decommissioned from today’s network, giving people the chance to take a piece of transport history home. Bestselling gift categories? Mugs, mugs, mugs! Everyone loves mugs. As well as selling these individually, we also offer gift boxes of four mugs and people can’t get enough. They also love our canvas bags, tea towels, coasters, and place mats. This kind of product does well because they’re practical whilst also offering people a beautifully designed keepsake. What makes your store different to a regular gift shop? As a charity we plough the profits we make from our retail products back into the Museum, supporting our education work with children and young people, and the upkeep of our historic vehicles and the wider collection for future generations. We are really proud of what we do.

What’s the mix of other merchandise you offer in the store? Vintage and retro posters are one of our top selling lines and we have one of the most extensive selections of transport books on offer in the country. We also offer lots of gifts based on moquette fabric, the iconic patterned textile used on the seating of London’s public transport. We turn these fabrics into accessories like shoulder bags, Oyster Card wallets, cushions and furniture. We recently developed a transport-themed Moquette-Socks-in-aBox range, which has been phenomenally successful. We picked five key designs that people would recognise, including the moquette design Gifts Today 21

RETAIL INTERVIEW: London Transport Museum shop

ever for our online shop – taking twice as much revenue as the Covent Garden shop and beating our last black Friday sales by 80%!

Is there such thing as a typical customer? In-store we have three main types – families, enthusiasts and international travellers. Covent Garden is a prime location, so we have lots of people coming straight into the shop without visiting the Museum. Average spend is around £17, and £25-£30 at Christmas. Online is slightly different. Families and enthusiasts are again our key customer groups for the online shop. We also get design-conscious, young professionals coming to our online shop, exploring our poster collection, decommissioned originals or our exclusive Moquette furniture. Average spend is at £45-£50 levels. How much of the merchandise is specially commissioned? When I started 12 years ago I’d say around 3540% of our merchandise was exclusive to us and 60% was off-the-shelf. Now this has reversed, with around 60-65% of products being exclusive. How well does your online store do? Within the museum and galleries sector, we were one of the first to launch an online shop around 15 years ago. In terms of revenue, London Transport Museum is one of the top-performing online shops within the museum sector. The split between online and the physical shop is about 30/70%. The last Black Friday week was the best-

How difficult is it finding the right companies to work with? When I first started, the biggest problem was the minimum ordering quantity. If you ordered a single mug, you had buy at least a thousand. Product technology has changed enormously now and we can now produce much lower quantities for a single design. Finding a right company and a quality product is fairly easy now, but the difficulty is finding one that can provide you with the product at an affordable price point that your customers are prepared to pay. What trade shows do you visit? We visit the shows in the first part of the year as this gives us enough time to develop products in the run-up to Christmas. We visit Spring Fair, Top Drawer, Toy Fair and Pulse. We then sit down as a team and go through all the things we’ve discovered before starting the design process. This coming January I’m going to Spielwarenmesse, Nuremberg, for the first time and then Maison & Objet in Paris. Biggest challenges in 2019? The environmental challenge. In the next couple of years, we want to be able to proudly present ourselves as environmentally friendly and Fairtrade. Our aim is to remove all single use packaging from our suppliers, and to look at replacing plastic in our pocket money toys with materials like bamboo. We’re a small institution so it’s not easy, but we’re up for the challenge!

These retailers share their secrets…

‘I have samples around my shop and each corner you visit there is a different scent which encourages customers to ask what the fragrance is.’

Matthew Bates, The Pier, Blackpool

‘There is a trend for more local products but also people are looking for quality candles that don’t cost too much. We stock local Cumbrian brands Agnes + Cat, and more recently Pintail Candles.’

Fiona Richards, The Little Shop, Arnside, Cumbria

Strike a light! Home fragrance is booming, with candles named the fastest growing segment of the fragrance market, according to a report by the Business of Fashion. Proof positive that the humble candle is so much more than just wax in a glass jar

B

‘Bomb candles are great for price point and attractive bold designs and yummy fragrance - our customers can’t stop sniffing them!’

Judy Evans, owner, Williams of Audlem, Crewe

‘I’ve used Lily Flame as my candle supplier for the last six years. Their range is so diverse and caters for all tastes, whether you like floral, fruity, sweet or spicy. I’m yet to experience a slow seller. Lavender based fragrances seem particularly on trend at the moment.’

Ellie Bartle, Tigerlillys, Littleover, Derby

‘I spent a whole day at the Spring Fair trying to find the right candle company for us, one which would sit alongside Lily Flame. This was when I found the fabulous Marmalade of London, another lovely upmarket range of candles in tins and jars with beautiful packaging who also have diffusers with refills and a lovely range of matching handwash, body lotion and soap.’

Caroline Boydell, Hugs & Kisses, Wolverhampton

rits buy an average of six candles per year at £7.40 a go, according to a report by Vend, with candle-buying spiking around Mother’s Day in March as well as over the festive period. The company surveyed 1001 consumers to discover what’s behind the candle craze. Over two in five (42%) respondents said they buy candles to make their house smell better, and more than one third (36%) said a candle relaxed them. A similar number (34%) said that burning a candle at home made them feel cosier. Meanwhile, over one in ten (13%) said that lighting a candle puts them in the mood for love, with 8% admitting that they and their partner light candles in the bedroom. One in ten said they like to be surrounded by candles when taking a bath and 6% of British adults light a candle while doing yoga or pilates in the house. ‘Customers are looking for that one scent to create the perfect atmosphere or remind them of

that special time or place. Once this fragrance has been chosen the customer’s focus then homes in on the quality of the candle and the burn that they can receive from their purchase,’ says Nicky Dawson, Price’s Candles. Emma Wednesday from The Country Candle company thinks candles are considered a vital part of interior design these days. ‘Interior colour trends have a huge impact on what sells well for us. We created our Pastels collection to make the most of this trend. ‘Customers are becoming more interested in value for money. Does the candle have a decent burn time? They’re likely to pay more if they know its going to last longer than the one they picked up at the supermarket. What’s the scent throw like? Customers know a cheaper candle is likely to contain less fragrance. Design is also really important. If the product doesn’t look beautiful it won’t attract customers.’ Gifts Today 23

The royal treatment Price’s Candles

P

rice’s Candles have a proud heritage. They’ve been producing long-lasting candles ever since the company was founded in 1830 and, while the world of candles has changed immensely since then, their promise to produce high quality candles remains just the same as it did then. Today the company boasts a vast product range, with something to suit every lifestyle, age and budget, while retaining the ethos of value and quality they’re renowned for. Testament to this is the fact they still retain the Royal Warrant as candlemakers to Her Majesty The Queen, which was awarded back in 1850, after developing the Sherwood candle for the wedding of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1840. The Fragrance Collection is the newest addition to Price’s Candles’ offering. It appeals to a broad range of candle lovers, boasting an array of contemporary scents and designs, made with the highest quality waxes and fragranced throughout. The company have recently launched more new fragrances, taking the entire Fragrance Collection to an impressive 36 scents and offering a variety of candle sizes, from the smallest sized candle tin, to the largest, the contemporary large glass jar and Reed Diffusers. Burn times range from 25 to 150 hours and the collection offers a vast choice of scents across the fragrance families of woody, spicy, floral, fresh, fruity and sweet. Reed diffusers can be present alongside the candles to create the perfect fragrance layering in any home.

Candle power Heyland & Whittle

S

tep into the world of Heyland & Whittle where glorious, luxurious and sophisticated fragrances greet you. Why is spring the perfect time for candles? Evenings are finally getting lighter and days are starting to get warmer now that spring is here, so it’s time to pack away all those things that make you feel cosy when it’s cold. While it’s probably a good idea to switch your winter curtains for some lighter ones and remove the extra blankets from your bed, you don’t need to get rid of everything that makes you think of winter. Many of us use candles throughout the colder months as they make a room look and feel warmer and more comfortable, but many stop using them so much during spring, which means you miss out on their benefits.

• Help you transition from day to night The evenings get darker later on now and they seem to fade fairly slowly, which can mean you end up turning lights on when you don’t really need to. There’s nothing more relaxing than a few flickering candles on a spring evening, so fully make the most of the subtle lighting effect.

• Freshen up your home One of the best things about spring is all the fresh scents in the air. From blooming flowers to just-cut grass, spring smells great when you step outside. Candles help you bring a bit of this in, whether you love fresh or floral fragrances, helping your home to feel like spring.

• Help you fall asleep As evenings get lighter, it can be difficult to adjust and switch off when you need to in order to get a good night’s sleep. The soft, flickering light of candles actually helps your mind and body to relax so you’re better able to drift off.

Wax Lyrical

ax Lyrical, the UK’s largest home fragrance company, celebrates its 40th anniversary by unveiling a host of new product designs, new fragrances and new collections for 2020. Inspired by its English Lake District setting, the UK manufacturer marks its milestone year with major investment in its people, the environment and its high-quality products of fine fragrance candles, reed diffusers and innovative gifts. As part of its ongoing commitment to the environment, research and development is also playing an important role in its 2020 ranges. Wax Lyrical is introducing natural wax candles and alcohol-free reed diffusers, all developed at its Cumbria headquarters which are powered by a wind turbine and where all the water used in its production process is recycled. As well as unveiling new product designs and fragrances, new branding also complements Wax Lyrical’s 2020 collections which are set to become household favourites across the UK and in the 46 countries it exports to around the world. Through hours of testing in its new state-of-the-art laboratory under the watchful eye of the UK’s leading home fragrance scientist Dr Will Locke, Wax Lyrical ensures each of its products throws fragrance all the way to the end. This testing and attention to detail ensures all Wax Lyrical candles burn clean, safe, with 100% fragrance throughout and for the optimum length of time, whilst its reed diffusers will last longer and throw fragrance further with an all new alcohol-free diffuser formula. All designed in-house by expert product development manager Rachel Holmes and her team, and manufactured on site, Wax Lyrical products feature stunning artwork, quality vessels and stylish packaging. The business, known all over the world for its quality British-made products, rounded off a successful 2019 with the launch of a new collection, Baby It’s Cold Outside, which received national acclaim for its four festive fragrances accompanied by stunning illustrated product designs. Looking ahead to 2020, Rachel Holmes said: ‘It’s set to be an exciting year with new-look designs for our bestselling collections, new fragrances, brand new ranges set to launch throughout the year, and even more environmentally-friendly innovations - a fitting way to celebrate 40 years in business.’

Heaven Scent

Candlelight

reated in 1993 after an around the world trip inspired Daniel Pettitt to sell incense wholesale to shops, Heaven Scent has grown naturally. His engineering background proved useful to Daniel as the business began to grow in the first five years. His brother Tom soon came on board and Heaven Scent became a family affair. From the word go, Heaven Scent was all about ethical trading, minimal packaging, vegan candle ingredients, natural ingredients where possible and recycled packaging. It is lovely to see 26 years on, that this message is bang on trend and customers seek out Heaven Scent products for their ethical and natural claims. One of the key components to Heaven Scent’s success is their ability to work with businesses big and small to help them to create and grow their own businesses. Customers can have their own identities stamped on Heaven Scent’s products for very small minimal amounts, so they can start small and grow their business. ‘We have worked with businesses and watch them grow, giving them advice and support,’ says Daniel. ‘Or we have just watched them flourish as they added their own creative flair - and boy there have been some successes!’

Trade talk

Gifts Today loves to hear your views

Leading figures talk trends for 2020 and how they feel about the year ahead

Paul Hooker

Commercial director, Joe Davies Particular trends/ ranges you feel are going to be big for 2020?

Next season will continue to see even more gifts and jewellery that evoke an emotion. Anything that is a keepsake with beautiful sentimental wording on are still thriving in the industry. Still very much on trend for 2020 are country animals and Joe Davies’ Country Companions range of jewellery necklaces and earrings hit the mark with the addition of an owl for next time. Botanical florals and pretty flower jewellery will also be big for next year with the introduction of two new floral ranges: Forever Petals is a delicate pastels range and Botanical Collection is a delicate silver range with a touch of antiquing.

How optimistic are you for the year ahead?

Very. Hopefully there will be more political certainty and more confidence in the future that will certainly help retail generally. It’s all change at Spring Fair 2020 and Joe Davies will have moved to a new location. You’ll be able to find us now in Hall 3, stand K20 / K21 where over 2000 brand new lines will be making their debut.

Monique Scott MD, Groovy UK

Particular trends/ ranges you feel are going to be big for 2020?

We predict gold, animal print and bum bags for 2020! With the slump in the market and politics bringing us all down what the world really needs is a bit of bling and sparkle with a heavy dose of animal thrown in to cheer us all up. Gold really seems to be on trend for 2020 whether it’s full on gold or just in the detail like an embossed monogram. The 80’s bum bag has also come back into fashion and we are seeing these in varying different styles, sizes and interesting fabrications, like Groovy’s Harry Potter Marauder’s Map bum bag, which is made from an innovative material called Tyvek, creating a truly unique product.

Stephen Thurlow

Partner, Alexander Thurlow Particular trends/ranges that are going to be big for 2020? Our new Love Flower range is selling very well. We are expanding it constantly, with some lovely new designs arriving soon.

How optimistic are you for the year ahead?

We are definitely feeling positive for the year ahead. We feel we have some great new products to sell.

Nicky Dawson Price’s Candles

Particular trends/ranges you feel are going to be big for 2020? The Scandinavian, clean living trend is going to continue to be strong in 2020. People love the strong, clean natural products reflected by this trend. Especially in home fragrance, people are opting for natural, earthy fragrances with white wax and simplistic designs.

How optimistic are you for 2020?

Very. Candle sales and especially reed diffuser sales have increased year on year. Home fragrance is the perfect way to create a relaxing atmosphere and, with people living such busy lives, we all crave that five minutes where we can sit down, unwind and enjoy a little tranquillity.

Emma Wednesday The Country Candle Co

Particular trends/ranges you feel are going to be big for 2020?

Interior colour trends have a huge impact on what sells well for us. We created our Pastels collection to make the most of this. It uses muted tones inspired by interior paint palettes. ,

How optimistic are you for 2020?

Very! We are a growing brand and the last two years have been particularly good for us. Christmas 2019 has put us in a good place for the New Year, so we’re very optimistic this year will be great too.

Contemporary gift-giving Enesco

Disney Traditions by Jim Shore For your customers who are fans of much-loved Disney classics, Enesco is proud to present a never-before-seen piece into its Disney Traditions by Jim Shore collection. Taken from the 1940 animated classic, Disney Pinocchio, A Whale of a Whale is truly a beast to behold. Feared by all creatures of land and sea, Monstro is simply massive. Even Pinocchio’s conscience, Jiminy Cricket, tells the little boy who’s got no strings that: ‘This Monstro. I’ve heard of him! He’s a whale of a whale! Why, he swallows whole ships!’ Measuring a whopping 19cm high, this piece depicts the scene from the movie where, holding his hand, Geppetto gently calms Pinocchio’s fears, even while in the mouth of the beast. Synonymous with Jim’s style, A Whale of a Whale draws inspiration from American folklore design, with traditional quilting patterns intricately carved into the piece.

Harry Potter Enesco is proud to partner with Warner Bros. Consumer Products to present its latest Wizarding World additions to its growing Department 56 collection. Expanding the incredibly realistic, accurately scaled Harry Potter Village range, Enesco is introducing Gringotts Bank and the Ukrainian Ironbelly Dragon Figurines. For the fan looking for something completely different, Enesco unveils a unique interpretation of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. All three are set to be big hits with fans of the Wizarding World.

Raising a Glass in Remembrance Enesco is proud to present a brand new, beautifully unique and sentimental long-stemmed Copa gin glass into its popular Ginology collection. The Poppies Copa Gin Glass is 20cm tall and features the elegant red flower – hugely recognised as an emblem of remembrance and hope. With strong colouration of beautiful tones of red, the British design of this piece is both stylish and sensitive to the sentiment it carries. Presented in a kraft window giftbox, this piece is a thoughtful gift to be given to a loved one at a time of remembrance, helping them to raise a glass to a hopeful future.

Willow Tree Enesco has unveiled a new figurine joining the Willow Tree family, depicting the bond between mother and daughter as they progress through life together and the roles of caregiver are inevitably reversed. It features a female figure gently wrapping her arms around an older female, in a warm and protective embrace.

GT CONTRIBUTOR: SOCIAL MEDIA - ROSS HEWITT

Kickstart your Facebook page for 2020

With Facebook leading the charge towards making every business page owner have to pay for eyes on their content, it is becoming harder and harder to get decent traction with social media content

Ross Hewitt, Managing Director of Secret Pie and author of ‘Savvy Social Media’. Ross began his digital marketing career in 1998 when social networking was something you only did in a pub. He set up Secret Pie in 2010 and has been helping clients get found and loved online ever since. www.secretpie.co.uk | Ross@secretpie.co.uk | 01904 410027 | Twitter: @Secret_Pie

Here are things the algorithm likes: • Posts with lots of likes, comments, and shares • Posts that receive a high volume of likes, comments, or shares in a short time • Post types that users seem to prefer more than others (e.g., photo, video, or status update) • Posts that are timely or reference a trending topic • Posts from Pages with complete profile information

To generate more interaction with your posts, try to create ones that ask a question or clearly require input from your audience

W

hatever your size of audience it is a real achievement to get an engagement level of over two or three percent. Look at a post that you think went well and do the maths… add up the number of likes and comments then divide that by the number of people who follow your page and times it by one hundred. If you have managed to achieve an engagement of over three percent, then you are probably looking at a post that was either boosted or where people had to like or comment to enter a competition… so make sure you do it on a ‘normal’ post. I have probably whinged on about this before, and likely many times, but it just sucks that you work hard to build an audience of followers and then you have your capability to reach them choked down so brutally. It sucks for the audience too as they chose to follow your page because they want to be kept up to date yet it is likely that the content they want to see will never be put in front of them in their newsfeed. This choke down on reach has also been happening a lot more through 2019 on Instagram too, so that one is heading the same way as Facebook…you need to pay to play. There isn’t much that can be done to stem the tide and to dramatically increase your reach, but there are a few things that can help a little bit. A good starting point is to familiarise yourself with how Facebook’s algorithm works, and I am grateful to a recent post from the Buffer Blog (which you should all be following) which simplified matters very well.

For balance, here are some things that the algorithm does NOT like: • Overly promotional content from Pages—pushing people to buy an app or service, pushing people to enter a contest or sweepstakes, posts that reuse the same text from ads • Frequently circulated content and repeated posts • Text-only status updates from Pages Posts that ask for likes, comments, or shares Using the above as a guide you can start to think about the next few posts you are planning. If you still aren’t using images or videos in your posts then get busy with them right now. Text-only updates fall flat… it’s pretty much a fact now. Get your page profile completely up to date if

you haven’t done so already. To generate more interaction with your posts, try to create ones that ask a question or clearly require input from your audience. Too many pages publish content that allows the audience to remain passive. Try a ‘fill in the blank’ question such as ‘The best gift I ever received was _______’. Make this a visual post by posting a suitable image with the text of the question overlaid on it and then repeat the question in the post text. This should start to get some responses and as more people respond then more people that see it will join in too. This makes the Facebook algorithm happy, so it will put the post in front of more people than would normally see it. ‘Either Or’ or ‘True or False’ type questions also generate activity as they are easy to answer. It is a similar idea to the previous one but this time you might ask a question such as ‘Which is best…Halloween or Easter?’ or something such as ‘Wooden Toys or Plastic?’. Direct questions that stimulate longer answers also work, and this could be something such as ‘Who is the hardest person to buy a gift for in your life?’ or ‘How important is ‘Made in Britain’ to you when you buy a gift for someone?’ You know your audience best, so trial this type of content in the way that you believe will be the most compelling, but always be testing and learning as everything you do needs to be generating engagement if you want your page to be shown to more of your followers. Good luck for 2020!

Top Drawer Preview

Spot the trends at Top Drawer Top Drawer have partnered again with cultural strategy agency, Flamingo, for the second consecutive season, identifying five key trends ahead of the S/S20 edition of the show

F

lamingo have taken large consumer and cultural trends and filtered them down into actionable product direction, marketing concepts and visual strategy recommendations. Whether the overarching trend is ‘omniwellness’ or ‘harmonious systems’, they trace these big ideas down into product and retail environment updates and evolutions to align with consumer attitudes and expectations for the new seasons. These trends have been researched and created specifically for 2020 and are being shown first and exclusively at Top Drawer.

Playful chromatics

Fun filled rainbow palettes of block colours that bring modernity through mid-tone brights. Varied hues are achieved through mixed material densities. Key colour neo mint adds to a positive and fresh start for 2020.

Rare bloom

Powerful-pigmented florals are grounded with soft brown leathers. Florals add deep intensity of reds, oranges and purples, clashing with acid lime, tempered with soft peachy coral. A fantasy garden that both soothes and excites the senses.

Refined elementals

Minimalist luxe in a subtle palette of neutrals, greens and blush. Chic details and textures add sophistication to the everyday. Smooth, circular

forms soften and create a tranquil environment.

Serene warmth

A late afternoon, relaxing natural theme with touches of glamour. Dappled sun warmth and cool shade colours are juxtaposed in the raw fabrics, rich prints and smooth pale marbles and concrete.

Unadorned tactility

New interpretations of traditional materials and techniques for a new decade. Aged and natural patterns are hyper real in blues and bright greens. Organic print and textures layered on to geo shapes give a biofuturist look. Carefully edited by a panel of experts to excite, inspire and, ultimately save buyers time with the knowledge that they will only see the best, Top Drawer S/S20 will showcase 1500 brands—both established and brand new—across Home, Gift, Greetings & Stationery, Fashion, Craft, Spotted | Pulse, PLAY, Wellbeing and the Food Emporium.

Packed full of tribal inspiration and animal prints, there’s no need to travel all the way to Africa for a taste of the safari - the big five can be spotted in the new SS20 collection by Parlane. With a special emphasis on big cats, the collection is full of exciting wild animals and is especially in love with the elegant leopard. Natural earthy tones and handcrafted elements contrast against glamorous gold finishes and hints of bright florals, of course there’s also plenty of lush greenery. It’s so easy to

have fun with this safari theme and you can add as little or as much as is required to create the desired look. See the full SS20 collection at either Parlane’s fantastic flagship showroom in Bourton-on-the-water, Gloucestershire or their new showroom in Leeds based conveniently off the M1 motorway. They look forward to welcoming you at either of these showrooms and can provide transport and refreshments to make your visit more comfortable.

Beautiful baskets and more Top Drawer: stand E73

Chairworks is known for its handmade, woven baskets from around the world, as well as its natural garden products. We catch up with MD Nick Smyth from this Fairtrade company ahead of Top Drawer Nick, tell us a little about yourself I have been importing baskets, garden and kitchen accessories from all over the world since 1968, offering a range that I believe is one of the best on the market. Made by skilled and experienced craftsmen from around the world, they are all fairly traded with communities we have worked with for more than 20 years. Nick, what range of product do you offer? Indoors and out, we offer a huge variety of woven products. There are garden and kitchen accessories including woven hazel hurdles, hazel fencing, furniture, garden playhouses plus laundry baskets, log baskets, picnic baskets and storage baskets. What materials are used? I like to use different textures and colours and combine them to create the variety of shapes you can see in our company brochure – head to our website to discover more. The materials used are hazel, rattan, sea grass, water hyacinth, banana leaf, abaca, rush, raffia and grass. What’s the provenance of your products? My aim is to design and produce a range of beautiful and practical items from all over the world. Everything’s handmade by craftsmen, most of whom have been weaving baskets and other useful and decorative pieces all their lives and are therefore highly skilled and take pride in their work. What about Fairtrade? I make sure all our products are Fairtrade and do not employ underage workers. I have been dealing with many of our makers for 20 years or more and they are happy to give me their best quality and price.

London Toy Fair

London Toy Fair Hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of visitors will fill the exhibition halls at Olympia for the 67th edition of the UK’s biggest toy fair

T

oy Fair is the largest dedicated toy, game and hobby trade exhibition in the UK. Covering a total of 22,000m2 floor space, the show hosts more than 260 exhibiting companies that are set to launch thousands of new toy lines. Visitors will be amongst the first to get to grips with new products and have the opportunity to network with industry professionals, from worldrenowned brands and retailers to licensors and start-ups. For the first time ever, Toy Fair 2020 will also be holding an Influencer Day on the second day of the show to support the growing number of video teams,YouTubers and bloggers attending the show. The Influencer Day will include new scheduled content for attendees, including exhibitor tours run by the BTHA. Influencers will also be issued with a separate badge, to make it easier for exhibitors to identify and assist them. This will better support content creators and reach the wider family audience that is becoming increasingly more integral in marketing for the show’s exhibitors. The show isn’t just about big companies. The show is dedicated to providing a platform for upcoming toy companies and start-ups, giving them time to shine in the Greenhouse Area. This is based in a prime location of the ground floor in the Grand Hall and is always full of amazing creations and undiscovered talent. Companies such as Eduk8 have been discovered here and have since graduated into their own space in the Hall. Be sure to check out Toy Fair’s Hero Toys, as these are the top 25 unmissable products at the show. The toys are nominated by exhibitors and retailers, and then carefully selected by a panel of industry

experts and the BTHA (British Toy & Hobby Association). The winners are displayed outside the front of the Press Office and are a great starting point for visitors to get an overview of what the trends are going to be for the year ahead.

Gibsons Stand E40 Gibsons, the British, family owned jigsaw puzzle and games company will be at London Toy Fair with a special stand design in January. There will also be a chance for customers to win fabulous prizes when orders over ÂŁ450 are placed, so make sure you swing by their stand, E40, to see what new products they have to offer. From January 2020 all Gibsons new puzzles will be in smaller boxes and shrink-wrap will be removed. Gibsons love jigsaw puzzles, but appreciate that making and selling them affects the environment so are committed to reducing their impact on the world around us. On average, their boxes will be 29% smaller and removing the shrink-wrap will save 521,096m of plastic film per year (the same as the length of 4,300 football pitches!) In addition, the

puzzle boxes have a fresh new design that will be gradually rolled out across their entire range. Gibsons are adding seven new designs to their White Logo Collection in January. This is a range of design-led jigsaw puzzles for adults that are also kinder to the environment and designed and manufactured in the UK. Amongst the new releases are three 500pc designs including a celestial image, Written in the Stars, and Paper Flowers, a beautiful floral image created entirely from paper.

Keel Toys Stand F10 Keel is furthering its commitment to sustainable plastic use this year with an entirely new breed of cuddly toy. Thirty years ago, a recycled plastic bottle was a spaceship put together with sticky back plastic as directed by the beloved Blue Peter. But today, single-use plastic and disposable bottles have become one of the biggest topics fuelling the debate for wider use of recycled polyester. Recycled polyester, also known as rPET, is obtained by melting down existing plastic and re-spinning it into new polyester fibre. This process uses 59 per cent less energy to produce than virgin polyester. Just to give an example, 16 water bottles will produce enough fibre to make a 30cm toy. While much attention is given to rPET made from plastic bottles and containers thrown away by consumers, in reality polyethylene terephthalate can be recycled from both post-industrial and post-consumer input materials. Keel is proud to have already phased in the use of 100 per cent recycled polyester stuffing in all its toys. The next step was to design a fully sustainable range‌ Introducing CuddlEco: the brand-new, 100 per cent recycled range from Keel Toys. These eco-friendly toys are manufactured and stuffed with 100 per cent recycled polyester from plastic waste. Weighted with recycled glass beads, these floppy toys have been designed for hugging by a loving new friend. Traditional glass eyes have been replaced with cottonembroidered eyes, lending a unique and playful character. The Keel Toy icon on all toys is now formed from FSC cardboard, saving plastic on the millions of toys the company sells each year, and even the sewn-in label is sustainable cotton. All toys are manufactured in an ICTI ethically audited factory. CuddlEco features endangered animals, including turtles, sloths, tigers, snow leopards, pandas, blue whales, great apes and polar bears. For eco-awareness, the range will be clearly labelled with the sustainable message and offered with a variety of retail solutions.

Fiesta Crafts Stand D2 UK toy maker Fiesta Crafts is celebrating 30 years in the business. And it’s marking this milestone in style by releasing a huge wave of new toys that will make a big splash in the market, including The Maze Craze. The Maze Kraze is a total reimagining of the classic marble run toy. By using ingenious magnetic track pieces, the Maze Kraze opens up so many play possibilities; solve puzzles, create loops to race against the clock or make your own marble runs – on the board or on the fridge. The pieces feature clear covers so the marbles stay on course as you watch them whizz through your track. Great fun to play on your own or even better, race your friends and family.
