Message from the Editor www.gifts-today.co.uk Instagram: @giftstodaysally companies before you head to the show, so you’ll have the heads-up on which stands to visit. It’s really true that many great retailers are just getting on with things, even in this tough climate. I keep hearing that it’s the little things that really make the difference when it comes to business. It’s choosing the right product, customer care, a smile. Our columnist Julie Dodsworth writes about how just an extra five percent can make all the difference when building your business, and this certainly seems to be the ethos followed by the owners of Mooch in Worcestershire, our retailer interview this month.
“
Delightful Harrogate never fails to impress and is a friendly place to do business
“
P
hew what a scorcher! As I write this we’re in the middle of a heatwave, the World Cup wall chart on the office wall is filling up fast, and the team at Lema is busy, busy preparing its summer issues. Summer’s officially here, and the second half of buying year is ahead of us – we’re halfway to Christmas! Even better, the Harrogate Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival is just around the corner. There really is something lovely about this show – it’s one of the few B2B events that people really seem to look forward to. I suppose that just as gift consumers still want to touch and feel product before they buy, we still want to meet other humans when doing business. It’s great to put faces to names and have the opportunity to chat through ranges before buying. p36
p22
Then, of course, there’s beautiful Harrogate. There’s no better place to sit in the sunshine browsing the show guide, to socialise after a busy day in the halls, to share a drink with friends old and new. As Janet Hartree, owner of Ewe and Me gift shop in Scotland told us: ‘Delightful Harrogate never fails to impress and is a friendly place to do business. And the timing of Home & Gift is perfect for top up of summer season stock and to do any Christmas shopping which still needs to be done. Lots of great selections right across the board.’ Our pages in this issue are packed with some of the amazing new launches you’ll have the opportunity to see in the flesh at Home & Gift. There are hundreds of ideas for key buying categories including home fragrance, jewellery, homeware, stationery, greetings and lots, lots more. Our aim was to give you the chance to browse through the offerings from some leading

When Jon May and Luke Jacks opened their first store in 2015, they were very mindful of doing it cost-effectively. They put a lot effort into the small things – cleaning the windows every day, sweeping outside every morning, taking care over wrapping. It’s certainly worked for them and the duo have now opened a second store, as well as scooping some major retail awards. You can read their story on page 22. In this issue we also catch up with our cover star friends at Ashleigh and Burwood, who have been incredibly successful with the ‘sensational reimagining of the brand’ in celebration of their silver anniversary last year. Building on the huge success of their Wild Things home fragrance range, the company are bringing the range’s vibrant designs to stationery and soft furnishings. We catch up with designer Sumitta Spencer-Townson to find out more - page 26. All this and news, views and comment. Lots to enjoy. I hope to see you in Harrogate!

Christmas is on the horizon January 2019 might seem a million light years away right now, but with space at Harrogate Christmas & Gift, which takes place 13-16 January 2019, already selling fast, companies hoping to grab a share of this show’s growing success should consider booking sooner rather than later. Simon Anslow, show organiser, explains: ‘Harrogate Christmas & Gift has seen significant growth in the last five or six years filling seven halls of the Harrogate Convention Centre and attracting almost 5000 serious buyers. We have added new halls to the show to cope with the growing demand – but in turn, this is also selling quickly.’ Products on show have diversified from simply Christmas decorations to a large range of toys, gifts, greetings cards, aromatherapy products, confectionery, garden ornaments and even furniture ranges. The show is a favourite with garden centre buyers – so almost anything found in this type of retail setting can now be sourced at the show. Consequently, this is a not-to-be-missed event for manufacturers and suppliers of festive, all-year-round gift and garden ranges as the show is a favourite for multiple, independent and garden centre buyers sourcing new products. harrogatefair.com 14 gifts today

New season, new look With so many channels now available to tell stories, the importance of a distinctive narrative to cut through the noise is increasingly important. That’s as true for retailers as anyone else. Creating a brand that resonates with consumers is key: the concept, the product range, the design, the customer service - myriad brand components that form a composite whole and tell a coherent, individual story. And that’s where Top Drawer comes in: across Home, Gift, Fashion and Craft the story is of icons, ideas and everyday items of desire – new, original, creative, curated, commercially appealing, design-led. ‘By bringing together an exclusive selection of the world’s best brands and designers, we provide one space where retailers can edit their own store story; finding new names, adding new products from brands they love, tuning in to new trends, honing a retail offer that speaks to their customers and of their unique vision’, states Alejandra Campos, Event Director of Top Drawer. ‘With each edition, we carefully curate a consistent and inspiring collection of new products from leading brands and new designers; and provide a sourcing experience that is exciting, comfortable, sophisticated and fresh’. Top Drawer will return to Olympia London for the autumn/winter edition on 9-11 September 2018 and for spring/summer 13-15 January 2019. topdrawer.co.uk

GA news
Latest developments from The Giftware Association, the trade association serving the gift and home industry since 1947.
Meet The Buyer on tour! ‘It was a great success and the feedback was positive from the Tillington buyers and suppliers’ The Giftware Association took its successful Meet the Buyer events on the road for the first time with the Tillington Group of Garden Centres. The event was held in the beautiful Low Wood Bay in the heart of the Lake District, and featured giftware suppliers presenting and showcasing their products to buyers from ten Tillington garden centres. It’s the second time the GA has worked with the Tillington Group, and it was such a success that the GA were invited back to present to key industry buyers. The event
kept the usual formula, with all suppliers getting important one-on-one time with the buyers. The event was by application only and the successful attendees were carefully selected by the various Tillington buyers ahead of event. ‘It was a great success and the feedback was positive from the Tillington buyers and suppliers,’ says Gillian Munro from Otter Nurseries who helped with the organisation of the event. ‘The proof will be in the scale of new orders and accounts.’
GA Member Focus: Agora Jewellery Social responsibility and a Fair Trade ethos are key to the company. ‘We are directly and proactively involved in helping our Latin American partners fully implement Fair Trade standards throughout the supply chain,’ says founder and designer Adriana Walsh. ‘Agora Jewellery is fully committed to the ethos of Fair Trade - by buying a piece of Agora jewellery, you will not only acquire a beautiful unique piece of jewellery or keepsake, but you will also be improving the lives of these artisans.’ Designed in the UK by Adrianna herself, pieces are then sent overseas to South America to be made. Adrianna finds her inspiration from the fashion trends across Europe, researching at trade shows and fashion forward events, and she designs her pieces in gold, silver and rose gold – with pieces typically taking a month to produce from inspiration and design creation through to the finished product. agora-jewellery.co.uk

Retail Profile - Mooch Gifts and Home
It takes two!
When Jon May and Luke Jacks opened their first Worcestershire gift store in 2015, their aim was to offer products that were quirky, quality and not available in chain stores – and their clever approach to trading means they’ve already scooped some major awards and have opened a second successful Mooch store. Sally Norton caught up with Jon to learn more…
M
ooch Gifts and Home sell a range of quality gifts and homewares through stores in Stourport and Bewdley in Worcestershire as well as online. In their three years of trading, Mooch have become a leading home and gift store in the Wyre Forest and were named as one of the 100 top small businesses in the UK by Small Business Saturday in 2017. They were also named Best Gift Retailer for Wales & The Midlands 2018 in The Greats this year. Co-founders Jon and Luke opened their second store within 12 months of the first and, driven by customer demand, they have recently moved this shop to larger premises on Bewdley’s high street – quadrupling their retail space in one stroke! Jon, congratulations on your recent awards. Could you tell us about your career journey to opening Mooch Gifts and Home? Luke worked in retail instore management at Next, while I’d been in food marketing. I’d taken a job with 22 gifts today
Asda as a local food buyer, where I found I preferred working with small producers rather than getting involved with the big corporate thing. It was while I was at Asda that we took the plunge and launched Mooch in Stourport. However, it wasn’t enough to keep us both in full-time employment and so we decided the best way to make it work was to launch a second shop. That’s how we came to open the shop in Bewdley within a year. What was your aim when setting up business? We knew that gifts could be an all year round opportunity if we got it right - we wanted a quirky shop, with a bit of character to it. We used to go on holiday to Cornwall where there were a couple of shops we loved, and we thought we could replicate them in this area. We wanted to offer items that were different, good quality, perhaps a bit quirky, items that were not available on the normal high street. We didn’t want to focus on the tourist market, but wanted it to be for the locals. It’s turned out that way and
I’d say 90% of our trade is local people, and just 10% tourists. How did you go about setting up the Stourport shop? We didn’t have a huge budget and we didn’t want to borrow money but I just knew we could do it cost effectively. We were very hands-on! We trawled through eBay, found a shop that was shutting down in Stratford Upon Avon and bought all their shop fittings for £250. We also bought crates from a vegetable supplier and set everything up ourselves. As we were launching outside trade events, we did a lot of purchasing online or through catalogues. That made it hard to really know the sizes of things and, in fact, when our our first delivery arrived we were shocked how little there was! In the end we maxed out our credit cards to buy more stock and fill the shop. When we look back at pictures, the shop did look almost empty but, within the first week of trading, we knew we’d got it right because of the amazing feedback from everybody.
What mix of gifts do you offer in your two stores? We aim to offer something completely different. I’d say our typical customers are yummy mummies and ladies who lunch. With an average spend of £15£20, we really try to ensure we have gifts for any occasion. Transomnia was one of our very first suppliers and we’re still with them now – we look after each other and their local agent is fab. It’s the same with Sass and Belle. We also have a great relationship with Moorland Pottery, who make bespoke mugs for us, with phrases like ‘London, New York, Paris, Bewdley’ on them. We’re having a collector’s bear made for us from Betty & Claude, and have Mooch candles made for us by Heaven Scent – it’s all about setting ourselves apart from the competition and building the Mooch brand, really. Our three key categories are jewellery, candles and gifts for babies and small children. Strong brands for us are Orange Tree Toys, Junction 18 and Rainbow Designs. St Eval also does well, as do licensed products
featuring Paddington and Peter Rabbit. We also like to include some big name brands in the mix – companies like Katie Loxton; people don’t expect to see brands like this in a small town and they like the fact they don’t have to travel far to buy them. What about trends? Flamingos and unicorns are still strong for us, hummingbirds are doing great, and we’re looking at llamas being big for the second half of this year. I think we may have gone in a bit early on some trends like cacti, pineapples and mermaids – it can take a while for London trends to make it out to the Shires. We try to respond to customer demand and so are stocking up on lots of British products, journals and pens as people are asking for them. How does your online offering work? We didn’t
have a big budget, so I set up the site myself through GoDaddy – it means that at least we have a presence! Our online sales are about 5% of our total, not a great deal but at just £24 a month for the template it pays for itself. What’s surprising is how many people look at the website and then come into the store. We’ve taken on two younger members of staff, a student and a Saturday assistant, and I’m hoping to make time for them to upload new content to the site. What have been the biggest challenges you have faced since opening? Definitely in getting the support from the banks to help with our mortgage. They just don’t want to lend to small businesses, especially small high street businesses. Increasingly we see a threat from charity shops selling more new products, which is frustrating because they
don’t have the same overheads as us. Other challenges include all the red tape and councils not offering enough support in response to business rates. It’s those headaches. Looking back, what advice would you give you to others setting out on the same journey? Definitely offer something different to what anyone else does in your area, so you’re not the same as everyone else. It’s vital to make the shop look inviting - we clean the windows every day, sweep outside every day, and have plants outside the store. Service
is key and we take care over wrapping – it’s those little details that people like. It’s all about doing everything you can to get people in through the door. I’d also say you need to move onto the next big thing before anyone else, which means visiting the trade shows and keeping abreast of trends. It’s good to go to London so you can find something a bit different – it’s not always easy to find the smaller suppliers at the big shows. And finally, watch your price points. People say we’re good value and that way we build loyalty.

T
he Carat Shop Ltd was founded in 2006 manufacturing bespoke and costume jewellery in the retail industry. In 2013 The Carat Shop branched out into licensing and signed a contract with Warner Bros. to manufacture official Harry Potter Jewellery and Accessories. Starting out with just simple charms and necklaces, their ranges have expanded as the Harry Potter brand continues to gain popularity. Growing from strength to strength, year upon year, The Carat Shop has seen significant success and have extended their reach drastically into new opportunities, now manufacturing distinctive pieces for private labels and other licensors such as the Natural History Museum and have also incorporated more brands into their licence with Warner Bros. including Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Looney Tunes. The Carat Shop also continue to establish their exclusive own brand collection of sterling silver jewellery, Roodles. Showcasing a comprehensive collection of charm bracelets, rings, earrings and necklaces with over 90 unique designs to choose from. After moving premises three times in the past two years to accommodate the significant growth of the business, The Carat Shop are continuing to strive to create new designs. With a price range of between ÂŁ2.99 and ÂŁ1000, their extensive collection of jewellery and accessories appeal to a diverse set of target audiences. Due to an influx in the volume of orders placed as well as more and more customers drawn to the products they produce, 2017/2018 saw significant expansion in all departments for The Carat Shop, growing from a full-time team of just four, to eleven in under a year. To accommodate for a higher volume of orders, the introduction of a fulfilment centre was made to keep up with demand to consistently fulfil next day delivery to customers. The Carat Shop will next be exhibiting at the Autumn Fair NEC in Birmingham. 2018 Spring Fair saw The Carat Shop exhibiting on two separate
stands in two separate Halls for the very first time, appealing to the Gifts section with their classic Harry Potter costume Jewellery and also in the Jewellery section with their more bespoke sterling silver Harry Potter Embellished with Swarovski crystals collections. Now expanding in the US, they also exhibited at the New York Toy Fair in 2018 for the first time. With the company inevitably continuing to expand, The Carat Shop are looking once again to relocate their offices and extend out further by globalising their licences and taking on new opportunities for the future.

Ashleigh & Burwood
Ashleigh & Burwood go wild with their latest additions Building on the huge success of their Wild Things home fragrance collections, Ashleigh & Burwood are bringing the collection’s vibrant designs to stationery and soft furnishings. We take a closer look at the new additions and catch up with two key members of the talented team.
Q&A
Sumitta Spencer-Townson, designer of Wild Things Sumitta, what’s your career journey to becoming Senior Designer at Ashleigh & Burwood? I joined Ashleigh & Burwood 10 years ago as a maternity cover right after graduating. Over the years I’ve progressed from Junior to Senior Designer.
Congratulations on the success of the Wild Things collection – how does it feel to have designed such a popular collection? It’s crazy, the feedback for Wild Things has been better than I could have ever imagined as I always felt I was creating a range that was a bit like marmite. Being so bright and bold I thought it wasn’t for everyone, but I have had people who usually like things plain and simple tell me they love particular designs. It’s nice to know there is a design for everyone. I have loved working on the Wild Things collection and have really put my heart
into creating it, so seeing it being so well received has given me such a personal sense of achievement.
Which design is your favourite – and why? Pinemingos - who doesn’t love flamingos and the tropical trend at the moment, it’s everywhere!
What’s the inspiration behind the new ‘Born with Cattitude’ design? Crouching Tiger is one of the most popular designs and I knew I wanted to tap into that statement visual of a big cat’s face again, this time with a female cat with plenty of sass and attitude. I wanted this one to be even more striking, moodier and more mysterious whilst still using bold colours that would really make the cat stand out.
What design considerations were there when designing the Home Accent Cushions and Hardback Notebooks? I definitely gravitated towards the designs where there is one main focal face rather than the repeat print designs. I felt these were much more striking and created such an impactful statement piece. The designs you see out and about do tend to have repeat pattern prints so it’s nice to be different and stand out.

F
ollowing an incredible first year for their Wild Things collection of colourful, quirky candles and diffusers in animal-inspired vessels, Ashleigh & Burwood are taking the collection beyond home fragrance gifting. In a first for the home fragrance experts, they are featuring their vibrant, popular designs on stationery and soft furnishings, offering customers further choice to incorporate the stylish Wild Things imagery into their homes. Three of Wild Things most striking designs, I Zee You Baby, Crouching Tiger and new Born With Cattitude, are featured on large duck down cushions. The removable cushion covers are made from 100% cotton fabric and finished with gold piping. In addition, the same three designs are featured on hardback A5 notebooks made with 100gsm lined recycled paper and finished with a colourful ribbon bookmark in blue, pink or purple. While these new products represent a step in an uncharted direction for the brand, Ashleigh & Burwood have ensured that the high quality their home fragrances are known for has been
Q&A
Anna Borrett, Product Development Manager matched by their newest additions. New Product Development Manager, Anna Borrett, was in the factory to witness the first rolls of Wild Things cushion fabric being produced. She said of the first production run: ‘It was very exciting to see the metres and metres of printed fabric during our visit in April. Seeing the vibrant colours on fabric looks great and stepping into a new world of textiles is such a fantastic direction for the collection.’ What’s more, the company have also introduced Candle Refills to the range – replacement candles designed to slot perfectly into Wild Things Scented Candle vessels, so customers can replenish their candle with their favourite scent or try a new one. Refills use the same soft, low melt-point and highly fragranced refined mineral wax as the Scented Candles for excellent fragrance delivery and an even burn. The final new additions to Wild Things are Supersized Luxury Candles and Diffusers. At 700g and 480ml respectively, the new sizes provide even longer lasting fragrance and make an impactful design statement in the home.
Anna, what’s your history with Ashleigh & Burwood?
I joined the A&B team in September 2015 and I can’t quite believe how quickly the last three years have gone – time flies when you’re having fun! I have been so lucky to join a team of such dedicated and enthusiastic people.
What are the benefits to Ashleigh & Burwood to in keeping design in-house? We have full control of our own designs. From our mood board concepts and inspiration we are totally in control of our new ranges and how they develop. We have had some great fun, too, coming up with puns for the Wild Things names!
Congratulations on the fabulous Wild Things range. How has it been received? We are so pleased with the collection and its reception. It’s very interesting for a fragrance company to be selling a range mainly by its design. Of course, the products smell amazing too and the feedback on their performance has also been great, but it’s the bright designs that have captured the imagination.
Which designs have proved particularly popular in the AW17 and SS18 seasons? Our Crouching Tiger is probably the star of the show. There is a little something special about him and we have seen great sales too!
What’s new for the collection in AW18? We have our fabulous Jaguar for AW18 – she is Born with Cattitude and ready to steal hearts. The design is complemented with a beautiful floriental, Dark Ginger Lily. We love it so much we have added new sizes and extended it into our new homeware items too. We have also added candle refills into the range. We feel there is such
collectability in our vessels and now you can refill both diffuser and candle. They will all need to be collected!
What’s the story behind the supersized Luxury Scented Candle and Reed Diffusers you are also launching this season? I have definitely noticed a trend in home fragrance towards supersize! We wanted to offer an even more luxurious version of our candles to the market and the fragrance release on the large candles and diffusers is really truly fantastic. We’ve picked three of our most striking designs to be supersized – Crouching Tiger, I Zee You Baby and the new Born With Cattitude. Rather than a repeating pattern, each design features a focal animal face which makes such a statement in the supersizes.
The introduction of the Wild Things Home Accent Cushions and Hardback Notebooks is a bold but very logical move – how did this come about? We saw an opportunity with the vibrancy of the design to extend its use onto new pieces. There were a few of us in the office who thought ‘I would love that design on a cushion’ and that’s where it started really. Cushions are a great way to update your interior look; you can totally change the look of a room in an inexpensive way. The notebooks are a great pick up addition and, if you can’t quite justify the candle or diffuser purchase, then you can still buy into the style of the range and join in the fun.
What was the feedback on the cushions and notebooks when you gave a sneak peek of them at Spring Fair? We were enthused by their reception and inspired to push onwards with our new venture. We feel they will work so well for instore merchandising. Adding a visual boost to the whole range as well as a new product for us. gifts today 27
Trade talk
Gifts Today loves to hear your views.
Leading figures in the gift industry talk Harrogate Home & Gift, trends and consumer confidence in 2018.
Sarah Watmore Owner, Miss Milly Top trends for 2018? Brooches have been a great growth area for us and we are introducing four new designs for A/W18 with a mix of classic and contemporary styling. We’re wearing them on hats and scarves, and decorating our bags with them, as well still wearing them as a traditional coat accessory. They’re very on trend.
How’s 2018 going? We completed our sixth year of trading in May and it’s been an incredible ride with consistent year-on-year growth. I’d like to say a huge thank you to our very loyal customers for their orders, support and, in a lot of cases, friendship. Despite it being tough in retail this year, Miss Milly is doing better than ever but we’re always nervous at the start of every season that this is going to be the one that isn’t ‘the best yet’!
What are your plans for Harrogate Home & Gift this year? Home & Gift is a great show for us and definitely the most fun to exhibit at. We get to see a lot of our Scottish and Irish customers who don’t visit Autumn Fair and it is the first time we get reactions to and feedback on our new A/W ranges.
Best thing about the gift industry? The people, without a doubt, closely followed by working with gorgeous products and getting to indulge my love of colour.
Describe your company in 3 words. Colourful, friendly, adaptable.

Simon Willis MD, Global Luxury Brands Top trends for 2018? Quality seems to be one thing that always comes to the fore in talking to new accounts. It’s still unicorns that we keep being asked for, and we have two news ones, plus flamingos, which will be available from De Rosa later this year. We have some very excited accounts waiting for those to arrive!
How’s 2018 going? I know it’s always dangerous to make predictions but so far this year has been steady with some growth over last year, which was itself a record year for us. The ongoing uncertainty over Brexit, and the general world chaos, is not helping anyone so we have to hope that the politicians make some progress and we enter calmer times.
What are your plans for Harrogate Home & Gift? I first came to Home & Gift in 1986 with Denby, my first employer in the industry. Since then I have been unable to escape and have been coming back regularly, now with my own business. Key to all business is finding new customers, and working with existing ones, and the atmosphere at Home & Gift helps us to achieve both.
Best thing about the gift industry? Compared with the tabletop sector where we also work, giftware is much faster moving and has that element of fun and fashion. We all want consumers to love what we have and emotion plays a big part in the buying decision, which makes it a very personal business.
Describe your company in 3 words. Small, friendly, professional.
Paul Hooker Commercial Director, Joe Davies Top trends for 2018?
Cara Beech New Product Manager, Personalised Memento Company What’s your focus for this year? We’re increasing our range of personalised jewellery, homeware and children’s educational gifts, which is part of a larger drive to expand and evolve what we offer. Later this summer, we will be launching a new trade website, so we’re carefully considering current and new ranges and how they will fit in. Most of the year, we’re preparing for Christmas in order to ensure that we maintain our promised lead times. To do this, we’re always investing in new machinery, evolving our processes and expanding our team.
How’s 2018 going? This year seems to be flying by! We’ve already launched lots of new products, with an array of new Christmas products to be launched shortly. We will also be hosting our first ever open showroom event soon, so it’s a really exciting time for us.
What’s the best thing about working in the giftware industry? Its progressive nature – there are always new products on offer and new trends to consider. This industry is so inclusive, so there’s definitely something for everyone on offer, particularly within the personalised sector where gifts can be tailored to the recipient!
Describe your company in three words. Personalised, progressive, passionate.
Perry Simmons Director, Stoneglow
How’s 2018 going? It’s proving a challenging year for retailers but this is where our trademark ‘Little & Often’ ordering system, 100 minimum order and free next day delivery service really comes into its own. Our customers are extremely resilient and entrepreneurial and have been using us to keep their shops well stocked with fresh products and their best sellers to maximise trade. Our highlight of the year so far was winning our 16th Gold Award for customer service at the recent Greats Awards - it gave everyone at Joe Davies a lovely boost.
What are your plans for Home & Gift? The perfect timing of Harrogate makes it one of our most important shows. We use the show to introduce over 2000 brand new gifts from our autumn/winter collection to enable our customers to get a head start on their buying for the most important selling season of the year. Harrogate show has a real holiday feeling; customers and exhibitors are relaxed which leads to a more social atmosphere - and the weather is usually great too!
Best thing about the gift industry? Unlike many other sectors, the gift industry is still dominated by smaller, owner-managed companies and shops which makes it a remarkably friendly, honest and decent industry to work in. The products we all sell bring a lot of fun innovation and creativity too.
Describe your company in 3 words. Friendly, efficient, customer-led.
What are your plans for Harrogate Home & Gift?
Top trends for 2018?
Perfect timing to showcase Christmas ranges and catch up with our customers.
Large geometric patterns, as well as urban botanic imagery.
Best thing about the gift industry?
How’s 2018 going? We launched a new-look trade stand, moved to the prestige Summer House at the Spring and Autumn Fairs, and were invited by John Lewis to dress the Oxford Street and Peter Jones’ windows with our Luna collection. We are excited about the year ahead.

Trends are like buses this year - so many have arrived at once: unicorns, llamas, sloths and a multitude of new animals dominate at the moment, as well as fairies, mermaids and of course anything gin-related.

Retailers’ Panel
Gifts Today Retailers’ Panel Key gift shop owners around the UK talk gift trends, shows and the trading atmosphere. Gillian Fisher Nest & Nestlings, Garstang, Lancashire What’s the story behind your shop? It all began in the summer of 2013, when I fulfilled my dream of owning my own Home and Gift Shop. I wanted a name which brought to mind a woman sourcing and buying lovely things for her home - my daughter came up with the name Nest, which was perfect! Following on from Nest’s success, we opened its sister shop Nestlings in 2015, offering newborn and children’s gifts. Looking back, I wish I had believed in myself more. The most exciting event this year was the merging of our two shops into Nest & Nestlings. We now have one gorgeous shop, making it much easier for all our customers.
How would you describe the trading atmosphere in the first half of 2018? Footfall was lower than we would have liked in the first half of 2018 but thankfully it has picked up now.
Do you have any special plans for the second half of the year? We are concentrating on expanding our newborn and children’s ranges and bringing new and exciting,
affordable gifts to our homeware collections.
New trends you’ve spotted at shows so far this year? We have noticed an increase in the artisan and organic ranges. Our recent organic baby skincare range has been a great hit with our new mums.
Of all the gifts you stock in your store, which ones would you like to be given for your birthday – and why? I would love the Sophie Allport nibble bowls. Not the most expensive item in our homeware range but for me, a perfect, indulgent gift for my home that would make me smile.
Describe your business in three words? Classy, friendly, fun!
Karen Greig Destined for Home, Edinburgh, Scotland Any special news you’d like to share with us? I’ve just celebrated being in business for two years. I have no idea where the time has gone, it’s been tough but also a lot of fun. I am constantly learning. You wear so many hats being a small business owner. I’ve loved seeing customers return because of the advice I’ve given them on their purchases and the free gift wrapping service I provide.
How would you describe the trading atmosphere in the first half of 2018? The first half was certainly slow and there are so many factors for this – I am glad it’s started to pick up now.
Do you have any special plans for the second half of the year? I am going to do ‘one day only offers’ from my hand

picked selection of gifts that I would personally like … it’s also a huge hint for family and friends so they know what to buy me for my big birthday!
New trends you’ve spotted at shows so far this year? Signs & Light Up Shapes are trending, whether you want to say it with a sign or pick flamingo or pineapple light up shapes.
Of all the gifts you stock in your store, which ones would you like to be given for your birthday – and why? I’ll be celebrating this summer going into my 50th year so it’s an easy choice for me. I’d like a China Blue Dressing Gown & Lounge Pants, with some Connock Perfume & Connock Handcream

Retailers looking forward to Harrogate… ‘When we visit Harrogate, we like to find quirky, design-led companies. Trend-wise, the tropical design on anything is still very popular.’
Karen Mace, Behind The Red Door, Nottingham
Angela Neal Blueberry, Minehead, Somerset Any special news you’d like to share with us?
‘Home & Gift is my local fair - it’s easy to get to, I can go on the bus, and it means less time away from Chirpy! I like the layout too, especially last year as it was really sunny so it was lovely to spend a bit of time outside while looking through the catalogue and product information that I picked up!’
We are very excited to have recently moved into a bigger shop premises, enabling us to become a major stockist of Bomb Cosmetics; this is something we’ve been working towards for a couple of years.
How would you describe the trading atmosphere in the first half of 2018? Extremely challenging; the High Street has been significantly quieter than in previous years. We are hoping that the summer season will see an uplift in footfall and sales.
Jo McBeath, Chirpy, Leeds
Special plans for the second half of the year? Settling into our new home – our customer base is likely to shift to a larger proportion of visitors than local customers, so we will need to adapt our presentation and product offering, while still striving to offer the variety and quality expected by our returning customers.
Of all the gifts you stock in your store, which ones would you like to be given for your birthday – and why? I’d love to receive a piece of jewellery – it’s always been my ambition to make my own jewellery and, whilst I am working towards reaching that goal, I get to indulge this passion by selecting each of the pieces that we stock!
‘I think Harrogate’s a great show because of the setting and scale - it’s more intimate and not too daunting like some other shows can be. Everyone seems much more relaxed, so it makes for a good trip. When it comes to trends, everyone loves unicorns! Anything unicorn has been selling well. We also love the llama and cacti trends that have been going strong for a few years now. Palms seem to be one of the latest trends which we are happy about.’

Available in Hand Wash, Body Wash, Hand Cream, Body Cream & Room Sprays in three of their most iconic fragrances…. with more to follow. All lovingly crafted in England! ‘So many of us, including Toby and I, have great grandparents and great uncles who fought died or survived and families that gave everything in the Great War. We owe them everything we have today and they should never be forgotten,’ says Ben Stubbs, Director, Heart of the Country. ‘Ben and I are very proud to have great grandparents who served and fought in the First World War,’ says Toby Stubbs, Director, Heart of the Country. ‘One of our great grandparents was John Reginald Cassidy who was born in Australia in 1892. Whilst studying on a scholarship at Oxford University in 1913, war interrupted his studies and he joined the Army Service Corps. He went on to fight in many battles including Gallipoli. Family legend goes that Reg, a decorated swimmer, was chosen to remain at Gallipoli to keep the candles burning during the evacuation to conceal the withdrawal of the Allies. He was one of the very last to leave by swimming to a rescue boat on the 9 January 1916. Reg continued his military career throughout his life eventually achieving the position of Acting Air Vice Marshall and being awarded a CBE.’ ‘We’re delighted to have partnered with Heart of the Country and Greenleaf on the Painted Poppy Scented Sachet,’ says Ben France, Head of Corporate Partnerships, The Royal British Legion. ‘The funds raised from the sale of these sachets will ensure we can continue our vital work providing through-life support to the Armed Forces Community. This year is particularly important to us as we mark the end of the First World War and lead a national movement to say thank you to the entire generation who lived through the war, served, sacrificed and changed our world. We are so grateful for every moment of support.’ The Legion was founded by veterans after the First World War. A century on from the start of that conflict, The Royal British Legion is still helping today’s Service men and women, veterans, and their families in almost every aspect of daily life. They also champion Remembrance through education and events, safeguarding the memory of those who have given their lives for our freedom.
The Scented Sachet Each large Greenleaf Painted Poppy sachet will bear the iconic poppy of the Royal British Legion and the Poppyscotland logo and donation information. Painted Poppy is Greenleaf’s new fragrance for
autumn/winter 2018. It is a confident fragrance with a powerful boost of juicy mandarin, a floral heart and a base of warm musk and amber. Each beautifully decorated scented sachet will fragrance a room for up to four months by just being there. Greenleaf’s scented sachets are 100% biodegradable and made using the naturally occurring mineral vermiculite, made with recycled paper and with essential oils. Scented Sachets are just about the safest way to fragrance your home, with no heat, no flame, no liquid, just fragrance. Manufactured in South Carolina, USA, Greenleaf has been manufacturing sachets for over forty years and is the original scented sachet.
The Donation For every single sachet supplied at trade, Heart of the Country will donate £1 directly to the Royal British Legion. To achieve this donation, the distributor Heart of the Country will be sacrificing their margin. Greenleaf, the manufacturer have also generously supplied the sachets at a reduced cost to Heart of the Country. The final contribution is made by the retailer who will pay 25p extra per sachet taking the unit trade cost from £1.44 to £1.69. This final contribution means that £1 of the £1.69 of the total trade cost will go directly to the Royal British Legion. For sachets sold in Scotland, the £1 donation will be directed to Poppyscotland, the Legion’s partner charity north of the border.

Candles, bath, body... and more! Candle king Xystos is poised to launch new personal care and pet-themed products
X
ystos has been a constantly evolving company for more than a decade, launching on the back of a successful retail business and, for a few years, distributing some of the best known collectables in the land. When Britain fell out of love with resin pigs and rabbits, Xystos seamlessly moved into a variety of other lines before striking gold with its candle and bath and body offer. That earned it the tag, ‘The home of flame and fragrance’.
Village Candle; Di Palomo It continues to be a big player in the wax market with innovative ranges from top American manufacturer Village Candle and its own Cello products, while also having two of the UK’s biggest bath and body brands in its bag – Baylis & Harding and Di Palomo – as well as the ever-popular Naked Bee. The partnerships it has nurtured down the years have benefited both manufacturer and distributor while also future-proofing the Xystos business. Much of its growth today is with garden centres, where personal care product is the cornerstone of the gifting offer.
Splosh Xystos is always on the lookout for new partners and its latest alliance with Splosh reaped immediate dividends as on-trend battery-operated Fairy Houses flew out of its warehouse and at the same time propelled the company further into lifestyle gifting. Xystos, which is also distributing Splosh’s Adopt 46 gifts today

The Art of Cats has images of furry friends on mugs, cushions, journals and notebooks, tote bags and sticky notes, while Precious Pets features pictures of different breeds of dogs on mugs and hanging door signs, as well as photo frames carrying tributes to them. Celebration Glasses from Splosh are a fun way to mark any occasion. A stemless wine glass comes with a fabric gold-glitter wearable crown or hat that clips to the hair. The glass design, for any kind celebration, has a gold foil confetti print with a wish that reads, ‘Congrats to you’.

It brings together chic, neutral tones with luxurious styling to create a stunning range of gifts delicately fragranced with Fig & Cassis for the ultimate indulgence. The Skin Spa Winter Wonderland Collection blends calming rosemary and eucalyptus with the refreshing fragrance of white tea to create an indulgent spa experience within the home. Baylis & Harding Fuzzy Duck Cotswolds Floral Collection – inspired by the company’s surroundings – has fragrances of Woodland Bluebell and Wild Flower Meadow, which beautifully complement the exquisite design, while the local countryside was also the inspiration for The Fuzzy Duck Winter Wonderland Collection, which has a Frosted Christmas Tree and Mulberry & Mistletoe fragrances.
Cello Baylis & Harding Spearheading the Baylis & Harding autumn/winter introductions is The Sweet Mandarin & Grapefruit Collection, which sees the return of its best-selling fragrance, with the stylish geometric print cleverly incorporating presents of all shapes and sizes and setting the tone for the gifting season. Baylis & Harding has personal care covered from head to toe and includes products that range from a bar of soap to a luxury wicker hamper that includes bath and shower crème, body cleanser, bath soak crystals and even a wash mitt. Its Boudoir Secret Garden Collection is simply stunning, featuring the striking floral design set against a dark background and accented with rose gold foil – all perfectly complementing the Midnight Rose Petals fragrance. Look out too for a new candle range from Xystos under its own Cello brand, which earlier this year saw the launch of Birch Bark hand crafted candles. Himalayan Glow salt crystal products – candle holders and lamps – will also be on view, as will the stunning Shimmering Metallic collection from Village Candle and the beautifully packed personal care products from Di Palomo, whose gift sets have sold fantastically well. Says Xystos director Tom Sykes: ‘We are a one-stop shop for busy retailers, offering high quality candles and bath and body products, as well as a strong range of lifestyle gifts that sell through because they meet the needs of today’s consumer.’

Sign of the times Angelic Hen DP3-4 Angelic Hen was created over a decade ago by artist Mari Hutchings. While at home looking after her two young sons, Mari designed and painted many colourful signs, peg boards and door hangers for her house and garden. Inspired by the enthusiasm of her friends and family, the idea for Angelic Hen took off. She began producing hand-painted items on a small scale, selling them at school fetes and summer fayres. Her distinctive, humorous and vibrantly painted products swiftly caught people’s imaginations and were increasingly in demand. To keep up with orders, Mari enlisted the help of a team of friends. For the first few years, Angelic Hen products were cut out and painted in Mari’s garage, with a steady supply of coffee and delicious homemade cakes keeping everybody happy as they worked. As the range of products increased, Mari made the move into larger premises and took on a team of professional artists. The Angelic Hen workshop is now based in the grounds of Wyastone Leys, a beautiful manor house in the Wye Valley not far from the picturesque town of Monmouth. With sweeping views down to the River Wye and deer grazing the parkland outside, Angelic Hen has stayed true to its rural roots. Visitors are always welcome to pop in and see the artists at work – and you may even be offered a homemade cake in the spirit of those early days.

Fine fragrances Heaven Scent Insense Hall Q: Q-E87 Having so many fragrances to choose from in the Heaven Scent Candle range, means many special occasion events can be catered for. A candle seems a very easy gift to give for special occasions like Valentine’s Day or a birthday and especially Christmas. For Valentine’s day Heaven Scent has many fragrances with Rose in, such as the beautiful blousy Candle Rose Attar, also many floral candles es can be given at this time, like their popular ‘Bluebell Candle’ or ‘Wild Flowers’ which has a romantic feel for the occasion. Candles can be given at Christmas as a gift but not everyone wants a traditional Christmas fragrance as they may want to burn the candle after fter Christmas, so surprisingly Rhubarb does well. Candles are almost a must at weddings. weddings Heaven Scent does offer an own label option so having a candle personalised for a customer will make the gift extra special. ‘We have many wedding candle orders for brides who use them as favours at their wedding, with a personalised aspect to them,’ says Sarah Pettitt of Heaven Scent.

Follow the 5% rule Whether it’s training for a marathon or building a business, it’s all about baby steps.

Julie Dodsworth is an artisan British designer. whose lifelong business in her plant and display business gave birth to her homeware business in recent years. Julie shares with us her work and life experiences and some of the great advice she has been given by others along the way.

ecently I shocked all my friends, family and myself in announcing I was going to run a full marathon for the very first time later this year – it’s in aid of a charity for a dear friend of mine. The moment of madness in agreeing to such an endeavour was soon followed by the scary realisation that I knew nothing about running or how I was going to possibly achieve such a feat. I quickly went about asking advice at my local running store and Googling ‘run a marathon from the couch ‘. Soon I had a selection of programmes stretching out over the 10 months before the race date. Each of them was a little different but I realised they all had basically the same message - start very small and add a tiny extra distance each week of no more than 5%. So, with this in mind one cold and snowy January morning, I set off to painfully jog just 1k. It nearly killed me but I did it! I’d started! Running, for sure, gives you time to think and for your mind to wander. I realised that this method of adding 5% to each week’s runs was very like building a business - achieving the same as the week before and adding just a tiny, tiny amount. With perseverance and this t time plan in front of you, y all you have to do is the hard work. h Then I thought about applying the 5% rule to all aspects of home, work and leisure – how I could improve my presentations by just 5% or how I could improve my puppy’s training by 5% - and this opened my mind to all things are far more doable if you only have to make small changes. The truth is that
“
I realised that this method of adding 5% to each week’s runs was very like building a business - achieving the same as the week before and adding just a tiny, tiny amount
”
thinking about and implementing big changes can often mean that an idea never gets off the ground - whereas baby steps can really work for someone as busy and as life-juggling as me. A great analogy is that you wouldn’t eat an orange in one mouthful, rather just a small segment at a time. And as my old boss used to say, ‘a job started iss a job already half finished ‘. For instance, today’s 5% studioo idea was to add a hand-painted colour chart with any art work submitted for my lovely licensees. I hope that this tiny effort on my part will improve the product creation process forr the amazing factory designers I’m so lucky to work alongside. Improving a good night’s sleep by 5% just means bed time is just 20 minutes earlier. Cutting down on tea and coffee by 5% is just one fewer cup per week It’s all really simple stuff but, with time and effort, who know what we can achieve! So, back to the running
endeavours. The tiny add-on of distance each week has now taken me over the half way (21k) mark and I feel I’m well and truly on the road to success. The 5% rule has been a fantastic lesson for me, that even from an almost standing start something substantial has been built. So on with those running shoes and my mind wide open ... I’ll ask myself ’where can we find that 5% today?’

Social Media - Ross Hewitt
OMG; GDPR & IGTV Quite a lot has happened in the world of digital marketing since I wrote my last article, and two big things stand out as worthy of mention... The first one is GDPR… remember that?
Ross Hewitt, Managing Director of Secret Pie and author of ‘Savvy Social Media’. Ross began his digital marketing career in 1998 when social networking was something you only did in a pub. He set up Secret Pie in 2010 and has been helping clients get found and loved online ever since. www.secretpie.co.uk | Ross@secretpie.co.uk | 01904 410027 | Twitter: @Secret_Pie

Without GDPR in May I would have turned my grumpiness to the never-ending onslaught of newsflashes about whether Meghan Markle’s father was going to attend the wedding or not, but no, GDPR kept my attention focussed on one thing that month. Every business had to spend time and money updating publicly visible pages on their websites that no-one ever reads to make sure that new paragraphs and clauses were added that no-one will ever read. National retailers decided they had to create infinitely long questionnaires to send to their suppliers to make sure that they were GDPR compliant, and brands and distributors had to get permission to send information to retailers, whilst everybody had to check with consumers who had said they want to receive information that they really did want to receive information. At the top of the pile were lawyers who were enjoying the latest gold rush, and in the middle were a bunch of hard-working folk receiving and handing out documents they didn’t really understand to people who didn’t really understand them in the hope that these actions meant they could demonstrate a reasonable attempt to be GDPR compliant in case anyone who does understand it all ever come knocking to check up on them! Anyway, the only real message I want to make sure everyone understands is that it is still OK to do email marketing! Some of you will have tried to garner new permissions by emailing your existing recipient lists, and I
would guess that for every 1000 on your list you have managed to retain around 10% of them. Not a great result, but it’s still a group of people who want to hear from you. If you did execute an unexpected cull of your mailing list, then start building it up again. It’s fine – just make sure your sign-up form is ‘GDPR compliant’ and you only collect enough data to give you what you need to send an
“
If you were active in email marketing before 25 May then my advice is not to abandon it
”
email…their name and their email address. The shortcut to this, if you aren’t using it already, is to move over to Mailchimp for your email marketing as they have a perfectly straightforward bullet-proof set of tools to make you compliant and get your email marketing fired up again. Just Google ‘mailchimp gdpr’ and you’ll quickly learn everything you need to know. If you were active in email marketing before 25 May then my advice is not to abandon it. Even if you didn’t think it was generating direct results because you couldn’t track many online sales or see any spikes in website traffic then trust me, it was working. It might have stimulated a Google search of your business a few days later, or a visit to your Facebook page, or prompted a conversation somewhere. In the foggy matrix of what drives people to look at your business a cog will
have turned somewhere and turning cogs are good things in a marketing machine. Don’t be scared of GDPR and don’t let it put you off what is still the best way to communicate digitally to your existing and potential customers.
The second ‘big thing’ is the arrival of Instagram TV (IGTV). This feels like the beginning of the slow creeping death of Instagram as a platform for creative photography and a big push to move it in a direction that is all about the kids and gives teenagers another damn reason to stare at a screen instead of speaking to other human beings. My advice is to keep a watching brief on how it develops. I can’t stress enough about how important video is in today’s marketing mix but the real answer for this industry lies within YouTube and that embedded relationship it has with Google search results. Look at your Google Analytics data and see where your website traffic comes from…I’ll bet at least 60% of it is from Google. Keep making videos or start already if you haven’t taken the plunge yet but post them where our target demographics are browsing and don’t drop all the good stuff to start playing in a new sandbox with kids and teenagers…they might not be buying your stuff…yet. That said, I’m toying with the idea of starting an IGTV channel straight away…just to film people sat in restaurants staring at their screens watching videos instead of talking to each other, and then they can eventually watch themselves doing exactly that on my channel. Then I’ll film them again, watching themselves watching themselves… the possibilities are endless!

On the ball Puckator
What are arguably the two biggest crazes of 2018 so far? Slime and squishies. Combine them and what do you get? Mesh squish balls and Puckator have them in stock right now! These soft little balls are surrounded by netting which forces the slimy innards to pop through when squeezed, causing an oddly satisfying sensation! When squeezed the bright rubber outer gives way to the light centre and the colour transforms. They create hours of distraction for curious children and perform stress relief for tense adults on the daily grind.
