Home and gifts beat retail blues Optimistic outlook and promise of exciting buying opportunities at Home & Gift sees trade rise above retail woes

The home and gift trade remains staunchly buoyant in the face of rising business rates, high street closures and the continuing impact of Brexit uncertainty. In a show of strength despite these pressing issues, 58 per cent of home and gift retailers responding to a recent Daily News survey said their business was doing at least as well or, in many cases, better than this time last year. Though gift retail was widely deemed “challenging”, gift retailers share a hugely positive outlook for the year ahead, with more than two thirds (72 per cent) of respondents saying they’re optimistic for the second half of the year. The opportunities surrounding Christmas, and the “inspiring, well-curated” treasure trove of products here at Home & Gift Buyers’
Festival are both spurring retailers on. In fact, 94 per cent said they would recommend the premier summer buying event to others in the industry, with one retailer saying it’s the best place to “keep up to date with the new products and overall feeling of the market”. Others look forward to heading to Home & Gift each year for its empowering qualities, giving visitors a vast sense of choice and buying power with some of the leading suppliers and distributors. “Niche suppliers, independent suppliers and a selection of British product,” draw others, while the show’s signature mix of “varied products” “ease of navigation” and “relaxing way to do business” make Home & Gift a must-visit for thousands of visitors descending on Harrogate over the coming days.

Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival Harrogate 2018
Life begins at 30!
How long have you been attending Home & Gift? This is my first time exhibiting at the Buyers’ Festival in Harrogate. I have previously attended as a visitor and was so impressed with the organisation, the footfall and friendly atmosphere that I just knew I needed to be part of this event.
What social events do you have planned this year at the show?
I love Home & Gift because…
“It’s the country’s best trade show for unique and luxury products, all handpicked for their quality and design over anything else. It’s the perfect location to pick up products that no one else has discovered yet!”

Heart of the Country have been given a makeover to celebrate the company’s 30th anniversary. With a modernised logo and fresh, rebranded marketing material, the company may have a new look but it’s the same quality and attention to detail the trade has come to expect from its new range of products. Stop by A26 to see the overhaul and order Painted Poppy Scented Envelope Sachets. Heart of the Country will be donating £1 to the Royal British Legion for each sachet sold and is aiming to raise £36,500 in total – £1 for every day that’s passed since the end of World War 1.

It is a great time of year to socialise, especially if the weather is good. I hope to meet up with friends and acquaintances sometime during the show. As this is a ‘local’ show for me I am able to commute.
What are your top products this year? Male orientated cards. I think there is a big gap in the market for greetings cards for men, especially if they are not into sport or drinking (to the extreme). Maybe my Cameo Creatures will fill the gap for our loveable male human beasts, such as the stag ‘To my Magnificent Mate’, or the bull, ‘Happy Birthday Handsome Hunk’.
Any big trends you’ve spotted? Trends are difficult to predict. Sometimes a trend seems to be a winner only to fizzle out sooner than you think. Other trends seem so unlikely but somehow go from strength to strength. I design the things I love, and if it fits in and is on trend, all the better. However, I think teddy bears are becoming on trend again, if they ever went out of favour. With the resurgent appeal of Paddington Bear and other new bears such as my Scruffo Bear coming onto the scene, I think we will see more of our cuddly friends around.

For that animal lover in your life, check out our awesome range of wacky and entertaining socks.
Why choose Home & Gift? Harrogate is a great location for the best home and gift show in the UK. We love to go there every year and meet our fantastic customers old and new.
It’s all in a name! The Harrogate Candle Company always give a new piece of machinery a significant name. Their first card machine was called George, as it arrived the day when Prince George was born. Their second card machine is called Lewis, because they received it on the same day their John Lewis contract was confirmed. Finally, one of their wax melters is called Bruce, because it arrived the day when entertainer Bruce Forsyth passed away. DP4-C25

Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival Harrogate 2018
A little Yorkshire-ness Viewpoint British artisan Julie Dodsworth gives visitors and exhibitors a very special Northern welcome to the Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival. DP4 - B21 Good morning and welcome to Yorkshire — or God’s own country as we call it. I’m sure you have already felt the warm friendly approach we Yorkshire folk are so proud of and, indeed, we really do say hello to strangers! I also think that our Yorkshire ways can be good for your business, too. A little great example of this highlighted itself only the other day. Having recently taken up running (and madly entering a full marathon), I went along to my local running store to get some advice. The lady in the York store couldn’t have been more encouraging and gave me great advice on footwear, a beginner’s programme and even details and contact numbers of my local park run. A couple of weeks later I was back for more supplies and amazingly she asked me how I was getting along. Once again she was full of praise and encouragement. Shopping in the same brand of store in a different city on another occasion, I was served politely and efficiently, but the ‘experience’ was missing. I could have simply shopped online. Of course I understand that a running shop is going to be mainly runners in and out of the door and perhaps it’s a little unrealistic to be enthusiastic about everyone’s endeavours? But for sure the lady in the York store didn’t find it a challenge at

all. I felt that if it was interesting to me, it was interesting to her. So here’s to hoping you enjoy your Harrogate Show and the warm Yorkshire welcome you deserve and will receive everywhere. If you do take an early morning stroll, just be aware that strangers will say hello and all good Yorkshire shops everywhere will be ready with a smile. Join me and my daughter Beth on our stand for Yorkshire and British made products and, of course, a warm Yorkshire welcome!

Lizzie Parker GS-36 How long have you been attending Home & Gift? This is my first one - I’m a home and Gift virgin! I’m really looking forward to experiencing what people tell me is a fun and friendly show in lovely Harrogate setting – I hear some people treat it like a little holiday rather than work.
What social events do you have planned this year? Catching up with some of my favourite clients and exhibitor buddies.
What are your top products this year? Has to be my Pussycat Little Notes collection. We launched it at Top Drawer in January and it’s been massively popular.
Any big trends you’ve spotted? There is a definite trend towards buying small luxury cards. I’ve had requests to do some of my larger card designs as small ones.
How would you describe consumer confidence? People want unique and personalised items, but perhaps less of them. The winter was hard on our seaside town stockists, but hopefully the sunshine we’ve been enjoying will have had a big positive impact.

Paul Lamond Games DP1-C67 Reveal is an engaging, trivia-style family board game with a difference: there are no questions, only answers! Players aim to guess the hidden movie, TV show or song titles by just seeing the first letter of each word. An incorrect guess will result in the second letter of each of the title words being revealed but the quicker the title is guessed the more medals that are won. Great entertainment for the whole family!
Eduk8 Worldwide DP1-B119 New this year unique and exclusively from Eduk8 Worldwide is the wooden Cargo Ship. The brightly coloured ship contains 26 magnetic blocks, printed on four sides with the alphabet in upper and lower case, numbers and shapes. Little ones will have great fun operating the crane to load and unload their cargo using the magnetic hook. Great for developing a child’s literacy and numeracy skills as well as fun general play.

Available in eight animal designs including a bunny, chick, kitty and octopus, they always return to their original shape no matter how much they’re squashed or stretched. Try them out for yourself on the stand!
DP1-B99 Ever wondered what a strange place the internet can be? Well now there’s a party game to prove it. In Weird Things Humans Search For, players are tasked with predicting the most popular endings to Google search questions – often with hilarious results. Examples include: “Why can’t I… own a Canadian” and “Can you get a tan from… a hairdryer?” (if only!). The more popular the guess, the more points players win.
Marbel DP1-C75 Kids can enjoy the thrills of the big city with this fantastic two level Grand City Station from Hape. Including a nifty image projector to show the train’s next destination, this station even comes with recorder and speaker for little ones to create their very own travel announcements.

This season they have the fantastic travel journal in kraft paper with a gorgeous gold foil finish, the useful and beautiful set of three travel bags, and the red and rose gold travel wallet — a bestseller.

Jeremy Corner, owner and new Chairman of the GA DP1-D110
How long have you been attending Home & Gift? Seventeen years.
What social events do you have planned for the show this year? I love the Sunday Sundowner drinks as it’s a great opportunity to network, catch up with friends and get a feel for how the industry is doing. The Giftware Association also get the chance to pick up on member issues that they need help with.
What are your top products this year? We are very excited to be debuting BambooCup at Harrogate. These reusable coffee cups made from bamboo fibre are helping to reduce the 2.5 billion single-use plastic-lined coffee cups going into landfill each year. We also have a fresh and colourful new range of handmade cards called Biscuit.
Any big trends you’ve spotted? Environmentally conscious and socially mindful products are a huge trend starting to come through. It’s exciting to be a part of this change.
How would you describe consumer confidence? People are still spending money. The challenge for us as suppliers and retailers is to find ways for them to spend it with us!

Buyers’ Festival Appreciation Society! Ross Hewitt, managing director of Secret Pie and author of Savvy Social Media, began his digital marketing career in 1998 when social networking was only something you did in a pub. He set up Secret Pie in 2010 and has been helping clients get found and loved ever since. He’ll be walking the aisles of Home & Gift as usual this year. You can find him @secretpie and secretpie.co.uk I always get a tingle of excitement when Harrogate Home & Gift Buyers Festival appears on the horizon, and I don’t think I will ever lose it. It is the perfect place to catch up with clients, meet old friends and get introduced to the latest batch of wonderful innovations that will be hitting the market in the very near future. One thing that always surprises me though is how quiet everyone’s digital marketing is during trade shows. Very few brands and retailers make any noise to the outside world during those few days about what they are up to. Why not shake it up a little bit this year? If you are a brand and you are exhibiting your already publicly revealed products, then get snapping and sharing. This is the place where your products are displayed how you want them to be displayed…on your stand. Get the cameras out and photograph them in all their artificially lit and white backgrounded glory and tell the world that you are proud of what you make and distribute.
Independent retailers, this is your moment too… you leave your business and family for a few days to travel miles and miles to bring the best of the best back to your store. Share the experience. Show your existing and potential customers how you work behind the scenes to make sure your shop has the best answer to every customer’s question. Help them to understand that when they walk into your shop they deal with the person who speaks to the brands direct and who trains the shop staff in person and who knows the names of the individuals to call when questions need answering or problems need solving. Show them how they avoid having to work through call centres when they come into your shop and how they get the personal touch from the person in the know! Don’t lock the consumer out for four days… let them in, even just a little bit. It’s content, and today’s digital marketing challenge revolves around exactly that. Good luck and have fun.

We have over the last few years become known as Langs, so this year we have decided to re-brand ourselves with a new logo
Design of the times There are exciting times ahead for family company Langs, as they celebrate their 56th visit to Home & Gift with a rebranding and plenty of new gift and home decor ranges. We caught up with sales manager Keith Edmondson to discover what the company will be offering at the show this year
How many years have Langs been visiting Home & Gift?
What are your big launches at this year’s show?
We have exhibited at the Home and Gift Fair from the very first show in 1962, and we have seen many changes to products and trends in this time which always keeps it exciting and fresh.
It’s an exciting end to our year here at Langs with the launch of our brand new catalogue showcasing all our new autumn/winter collections. The design team has been very busy over the last few months to create 18 exclusively designed collections with many great gift ideas for family and friends, with clean and fresh home interior products to suit the home all year round.
What makes the show so special for your company? The combination of the great location which helps create a unique and relaxed atmosphere for customers to enjoy the social side of the show in a beautiful setting, weather permitting of course.
What makes your company stand out from the rest? We pride ourselves on being attentive to our customers’ needs, with great service and support to help them wherever we can. We have built up our design team over the last few years and we are working towards having all own-designed products. The majority of our customers are independents who set themselves apart from their competitors by offering unique products.
Can you tell us about your rebranding? As many of our customers will know, we have been trading since 1949 as Richard Lang and Son Ltd where it all started out with the importing of cuckoo clocks from the Black Forest. We then moved into selling soft toys, before another change of direction into general giftware items. Now in 2018, we offer on-trend gift collections, gifts for all occasions and exciting home décor with exclusive hand painted designs. We have over the last few years become known as Langs, so this year we have decided to re-brand ourselves with a new logo and website launch coming soon!

Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival Harrogate 2018
Karen Mace, Behind The Red Door, Nottingham An independent gift boutique in the city’s lace market
What do you like best about Home & Gift? When we visit Harrogate we like to find quirky, design-led companies.
What have you discovered here in previous years? Some of the best have included Red Cuckoo bags, Fabfunky, Weekend365, Konplott Jewellery, Soake Umbrellas, Icon Watches and Miss Shorthair Scarves.
Any new companies you’re planning to visit this year? Yes – we want to check out Big Metal, My Gifts Trade, Wild & Wolf and The Harrogate Candle Company.
Any particular trends you’re seeing at the moment? The tropical design on anything is still very popular.
“We love everything about this show – the variety, the location and the whole vibe of the show is happy and relaxed.” Paul & Rachel Roberts, Mooch on St Giles Street, Northampton
Sam Gibbs, Nest, Leicester Founded in 2002, this boutique is based in the suburb of Stoneygate
What do you like best about Home & Gift? I love the sunny atmosphere and the wonderful mood everyone’s in, it really penetrates the whole show. It’s a great place to spot new and emerging trends for the A/W season and also a great place to catch up with companies that you haven’t already seen during the first half of the year.
What have you discovered here in previous years?
The Daily News asked retailers why Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival is such a key show.
We’ve had some fantastic products from card designers – Laura Skilbeck and Jessica Hogarth are two that spring to mind.
Any favourite companies on your must-visit list this year?
I think it’s a great show because of the setting and scale. It’s more intimate and not too daunting like some other shows can be. Everyone seems much more relaxed, so it makes for a good trip.
We’ve just opened a second retail outlet in a wonderful rural garden centre and have taken on four big companies, Caroline Gardner, Somerset Toiletries, Jellycat and Moulin Roty, so we’re excited to go and see any new additions to their ranges that they’re showcasing at this year’s show.
What have you discovered here in previous years?
Any new companies you’re planning to visit?
Soni Ahmed & Samantha Rose, Maia Gifts, Glasgow A city centre store that’s been in business since 2009
What do you like best about Home & Gift?
It’s been a great opportunity to pick up lots of new products, mainly from existing suppliers but we also found some great new ranges from Poet & Painter, Wraptious and Pop Out Cards.
I’m very keen to consider Wild & Wolf ’s Orla Kiely range, particularly for Nest At Thurlaston Garden Centre, and have my eye on some special smaller gems too – watch this space!
Any favourite companies on your must-visit list this year?
Any particular trends you’re seeing at the moment?
We don’t like to have a set plan when we visit the shows, instead we just take it all in and make purchasing decisions once we have seen what’s on offer and what the current trends are. There are always some gems.
Any particular trends you’re seeing at the moment? Everyone loves unicorns! Anything unicorn has been selling well. We also love the llama and cactus trends that have been going strong for a few years now. Palms seem to be one of the latest trends, which we’re happy about.
We’re fascinated by the difference in sales due to the different demographic we have now that we offer the same stock in two locations. Sentiment gifts at the garden centre are a huge hit and trend-led ideas, for example flamingo themes. There are striking similarities too though – Rosie Made A Thing cards and Think Of Me sell well wherever they are, and whatever occasion. It’s getting the balance right between a niche location and a more commercial one.

“I usually bring my daughter with me and we always go to Lucia for lunch, opposite the Majestic. It’s guaranteed great food and service. In the evening, we like Gianni’s Brio, though I’m planning on booking The Ivy Harrogate for dinner this year!”
Gillian Fisher, Nest & Nestlings, Garstang, Lancashire “It’s definitely not grim in this northern spa town! Harrogate has a lot to offer by way of eateries. Two of my favourite places to eat are La Feria for tapas and the Thai food at Tah Chang.” Lorraine Hurlstone, Covet Lifestyle Shop, Ilkley, West Yorkshire
