“People are adapting” The Daily News caught up with Sarah Ward, CEO of The Giftware Association walking the show yesterday. Commenting on what a lovely feel the show has, she mentions how “grounded” people seem. “It’s definitely not easy out there but people seem quite accepting of it. As Tom at Little Spring told me, people are paying attention to detail. They’re buying carefully, analysing all their stock, and trying to be as efficient as possible.”

Collaboration is key

5 minutes with..... Gillian Arnold Gillian Arnold, founder and owner, G-A1

Sarah Ward, CEO of the Giftware Association explains how Home & Gift is not only a great opportunity to catch up with friends but is also the perfect place to forge beneficial relationships for your business.

How long have you been attending Home & Gift?

This will be our seventh year at Home & Gift, though each one is just as exciting as the very first show we did.

What are the top products you’re launching this year?

At all the trade shows I visit throughout problems that you weren’t aware of — the year, I see such an amazing amount for example, the experience of one of talent, design and innovation in the company can help streamline a payment products that are showcased by the process in another. hundreds of companies, and it’s these The Giftware Association has working innovations that get neighbour exhibitors collaborations with key service providers talking and creating to ensure that our members Collaboration get the most value out of our friendships for the duration is becoming key membership, with advice lines of the show. Today’s fast-paced Collaboration is quickly becoming key marketplaces require mutually beneficial to moving forward in business. At one of partnerships to leverage creativity, our recent Meet the Buyer events, we were experience and resources, with right and wondering how to keep the exhibitors left brain thinking to overcome problems entertained between seminars. By working with another this sooner rather than later will be the company, you may find solutions to ones leading the charge.

We always bring new designs to the show, presenting the different wildflowers and grasses I’ve worked with over the last year. I’ve found and pressed some wonderful pieces that look truly other-worldly and I’m excited to show them. Our floor lamps are going doing really well.

Any big trends you’ve spotted? My studio, warehouse, workshop and home all smell like an old leather tanning factory at the moment because leather is so popular in the gift market. I’ve spent countless hours perfecting the different ways I can combine my surface pattern skills and leather together, launching several gift items this year.

How would you describe consumer confidence right now? There is no doubt that retail spending in the UK took a hit in the first two quarters. There is so much economic uncertainty in the UK and with Brexit uncertainty still hovering, can you really blame the average consumer? It’s not all bad news though – while spending has dropped, workers in the UK are seeing one of the strongest wage growths in some time, so hope may be on the horizon that this growth will translate directly into increased consumer spending, and who knows, maybe just in time for a strong last quarter and a better Christmas.

Proud to be square Founded in 1994, Belly Button have become an established brand with a strong customer base and are market leaders in greetings cards with a core focus that runs deep for their high-end ranges; to create a luxurious send with hand-drawn illustrations and with hand-finished techniques. We catch up with them to learn more. The square format card – a shape arguably more pleasing to the eye – is now synonymous with Belly Button, Why? It was in fact GF Smith Papers who inspired the size and shape of the original range. Company founder Rachel Hare says: “The square envelope they produced then was just so different to everything else around – a little more expensive but worth it for that design-led feel.” Inspired by companies such as Henry Butler, the square format was here to stay. “From our original designs to now, we’ve followed current trends and styles to keep a contemporary collection flowing to produce best-selling ranges.” Through various guises and looks the luxury high-end send remains the core of Belly Button’s business, selling these types of designs into the best UK independent retailers. The collection continues to evolve and build on firm favourites to create brand-new inspired looks, but 2018 has been the year to see a fresh focus for their high-end luxury square greetings card. The company’s new upmarket Rachel Hare sub-brand, named after the founder, has proven a hit with their show-stopper greetings card collection CoCo. Presented in a vibrant colour palette, the beautifully illustrated unicorns, hummingbirds and the tropics feature fluted gold and pearlescent captions to entice and play into consumers’ desire for escapism into a whimsical and fantasy world.

Belly Button Bubble Regenerating has always been a USP for Belly Button, but more so within the company in recent months. Their sister giftware company Belly Button Bubble are looking to follow the success of the Rachel Hare CoCo collection, launching new gift bags, flat wrap, luxury journals, notebooks and china mugs, based on the exotic florals, rainbows, mermaids and the hugely-popular unicorn design. Since its inception 18 months ago, Belly Button Bubble have strived to offer highquality giftware led by trend-driven design.

From our original designs to now, we’ve followed current trends and styles to keep a contemporary collection flowing to produce bestselling ranges The inspiration behind setting up the new brand was to fill a gap in the market for inspired collections. By tapping into the knowledge and insight gained at Belly Button Designs in producing and licensing product, and drawing on 25 years’ experience within the industry, Belly Button Bubble are adept at meeting specific market needs for irresistible collections. The autumn/winter collection is just such an offering, looking to switch easily from Christmas to everyday occasions, offering the retailer greater flexibility in merchandising stock. Expect autumnal colours of rich berries, classic reds and elegant snowscapes on a body of designs that work across the festive season and beyond.

Time to get social In a challenging retail climate, Mariann Wenckheim, director at London-based strategic design consultancy 20.20, urges independent gift stores to spend more time getting to know their customers through social media. Visit www.20.20.co.uk The impressive gift and homeware displays seen in department and other high street stores, especially in the run-up to seasonal events, are enough to tempt smaller retailers to try and emulate them – but how do you compete with a national or global brand that has Social the luxury of expansive media really floor space, larger marketing budgets and can play a greater buying power? key role Of course, you have to be more selective about what stock you buy, which means having a firm grasp of what your existing and prospective customers want. This is where you can utilise social media channels to your advantage. It may seem a world away, but social media really can play a key role here. Instagram is a good place to start because it shows you precisely what your followers (and their followers) are talking about and responding to, providing hints about the occasions they are likely to buy for. As well as forming a basis for what stock to have in your shop, you can also use this information as a springboard for inspirational Pinterest boards, which can provide that spark to engage customers in-store. As always, you have to be clever with your

3

online marketing. There is no point trying to compete with the big brands on choice, price and convenience. As an independent retailer, you don’t have to worry about whether your stock will appeal to consumers in different places around the country; sometimes, your point-of-difference is that your store is in tune with the needs of the local market. Remember that local hashtags on your own posts will be hugely beneficial here. While many of us like the ease of ordering by click-and-collect to a big store, there’s surely room for an ‘ideas-led’ shop that gives time-pressed customers suggestions for dinner party or birthday gifts. Social media is the perfect platform to promote such initiatives, with a captive audience ready to be engaged. Compared with their bigger rivals, independent retailers can be more agile and relevant ‘in the moment’, especially if they are able to successfully harness platforms like Instagram and Pinterest. There’s tremendous value in being a town’s best-kept secret, the place that everyone instinctively goes to whenever they are looking for something different to what the high street chains offer. And with an increased social media presence, clicks can be turned into sales in no time.

Stand E18

Hurrah for Harrogate Harrogate Home & Gift show is a firm favourite for all the Joe Davies staff and the company uses the show to launch their extensive autumn/winter collection, with over 2500 brand new gifts, frames, fashion accessories and hundreds of new designs from their top selling Equilibrium jewellery collection.

J

oe Davies’ spacious stand is always one of the busiest at the show as visitors flock to see over 8000 products all clearly priced and attractively merchandised for easy selection. Despite the crowds, the stand is a comfortable, cheerful place to make your selection with good air conditioning and generous refreshments too. Highlights include:

Sock Society A brand new collection of bright, trendy, very sellable socks, fresh from the success in Australia where they were voted Gift of the Year. The socks are exclusive to Joe Davies in the UK and are available on an attractive, practical spinner stand, which displays 48 designs, all of which are easy to re-order in sensible quantities.

snoozies! Another exclusive. The ‘cosy’ little foot coverings from the USA have been the company’s best seller for six years now and this year 10 exciting new series have been introduced.

Equilibrium Over six years the brand has grown to be the bestselling collection of jewellery available to the independent retailer. Retail viewpoint Julia Keeling, Wishes Of Cudworth, South Yorkshire What do you like best about Home & Gift? I like that it feels small and less daunting but it’s still a big show. As a Yorkshire-based shop it’s nice to nip up the road and have a stress-free day.

What have you discovered in previous years? Best Kept Secrets candles — all their products are handmade in Morpeth, a nice selling point, and they keep their ranges fresh. I also picked up the Magic Flyer Butterflies from the Handcrafted Card Company which are so much fun and a bit different.

Any companies on your must-visit list? I’m definitely going to visit WishStrings – they’re always a good till-point seller. I’m also looking forward to seeing Cartwright & Butler, which makes the most yummy biscuits and fudges in quality, reusable tins.

Any particular trends you’re seeing at the moment? For us it’s all about the unicorn still. Our unicorn cards from Nigel Quiney and Second Nature Cards are doing especially well. It’s the same with our partyware – unicorn helium balloons are flying out. We’ve even got a local company that made some Una The Unicorn limited edition bath bombs and we keep selling out — we literally can’t get them in fast enough!

The Daily News asked retailers why Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival is such a key show. Karen Greig, Destined For Home, Edinburgh What do you like best about Home & Gift?

Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival Harrogate 2018

Jo McBeath, Chirpy, Leeds What do you like best about Home & Gift? It’s my local fair, it’s easy to get to, I can go on the bus, and it means less time away from Chirpy! I like the layout too, especially last year’s as it was sunny. So lovely to spend time outside while looking through the catalogue and product information that I picked up!

What have you discovered here in previous years? I like to meet people in person who have contacted me so I can see their products. Last year I met Lovely Lip Balm and now stock her great products which sell really well. I also met Memelou Designs, which is a local card company, and now stock their gorgeous quirky cards.

Any favourite companies on your must-visit list? I love visiting the small card companies — they are always so friendly and enthusiastic about their products, so I’ll be going to see them again this year.

Any new product categories you’re looking for? I’m looking for prints at the moment. We have a wonderful upstairs space which gets great light in the summer and lots of wall space to display art.

Any particular trends you’re seeing at the moment? Green continues to be a strong trend, with lots of plants and botanicals decorating cards, fabrics and ceramics. The new Pantone Ultra Violet colour seems to be taking its time filtering through. I think we might see a bit more of it towards Christmas — I think it’s being pared down and we’re seeing quite a lot of lilac.

Lorraine Hurlstone, Covet Lifestyle Shop, Ilkley, West Yorkshire

Finding that first-time supplier and building a relationship with them — such a buzz.

What do you like best about Home & Gift?

What have you discovered here in previous years?

It’s a favourite of mine as it was the first show I visited for Covet. It’s easy to get to and is quite literally a breath of fresh Yorkshire air with a short walk between halls. There is always something new to be discovered and I’ve found some really great suppliers.

That’s easy — Valley Mill. Kevin produces candles, soap and Welsh slate to a high standard. I sell his products all year round.

Any favourite companies on your must-visit list?
One Hundred Stars — it’s a first look at their A/W range so it’s exciting!

Any particular trends you’re seeing at the moment?
Signs and light-up shapes, especially flamingos and pineapples.

“I love this show, it’s a lovely mother/ daughter day out for me and my mum. The atmosphere at Harrogate is always so relaxed and happy. Live music, Pimm’s and prosecco are an added bonus.” Alison Allen, Conway Cards, Garstang, Lancashire

What have you discovered here in previous years? One was Dear Prudence, offering hand-illustrated cards, and artist Laura Parks has been a great seller for us.

Any favourite companies on your must-visit list? I don’t look at who will be attending. I love to be surprised and let something jump out at me.

Any particular trends you’re seeing in gift right now? What’s more key for me is to find unique, handmade items with a story.

Home & Gift Buyer’s Festival Harrogate 2018

Let’s get social We ask exhibitors and retailers their recommendations for eating and drinking in and around Harrogate.

“I like North Bar in Harrogate, part of a small independent chain which has a bar just up the road from Chirpy! Also, I love the food at Sukhothai which, again, has a Chapel Allerton branch. Haven’t tried The Ivy yet!” Jo McBeath, Chirpy, Leeds “We’re both vegetarian and last year we found a lovely little place called Bica Bistro & Cafe in the small streets of Harrogate which we loved. They serve some great veg/ vegan options which was perfect to get our energy up for another assault on the show after lunch.”

Soni Ahmed & Samantha Rose, Maia Gifts, Glasgow “I never really get a chance to relax after the show as I’m always running for the train home – however, the one time I did, I loved Tah Chang (Thai). And I met an exhibitor at the next table who has been on Dragon’s Den so it was a great meal listening to her story.

Karen Greig, Destined For Home, Edinburgh “I’m determined to get to Betty’s for the first time! We have plenty to do on the stand this year, but fingers crossed we’ll be done in time for tea!”

Sarah Watmore, owner, Miss Milly, stand DP3-8

We visited The Ivy on Parliament Street when we came up for the Christmas show – when we worked in London it was a regular haunt of ours there, and we miss our visits, so it’ll be a nice treat after a long day of shopping.”
