Pictured here is their Bulldog John Bull and he’ll be joined at the show by other whimsical characters, including a Bull Terrier Queen Elizabeth I and Bulldog Policeman. Check the range out at DP4-17

It’s been 18 months in development and now Intelex is celebrating the launch of its Flexi Clay Hot-Pak range at Home & Gift. Founder and CEO Philip Gannon told the Daily News the company is “thrilled” with the reaction to the line so far. “There is nothing like it on the market,” says Philip, who designed the range himself. “Home & Gift is the first time buyers have seen the range and we have two types of packaging, one that is giftable and one for home therapy.” The patented range can be heated and then twisted, bent, moulded and shaped to fit just about any part of the body giving the user instant relief from aches and pains, time and time again. David’s top tip
Google it!
Everything you’re doing online should be focused on mobile and making the most of those micro moments when people are interacting with you.
The Great Northern Retail Summit kicked-off yesterday with a fascinating keynote from one of the leading authorities on the digital world. Google’s retail industry manager, David Green, took to the stage to share why and how retailers of all sizes can get smarter about their messaging online. Those in attendance received expert insight on how to connect the dots between themselves and their customers, converting browsers into spenders. “While smaller retailers don’t have the specialists that larger retailers do, they have agility on their side,” explains David. “There really is no correct way to tackle digital marketing, which is what makes it so exciting, and smaller retailers can experiment and react faster and easier. “Discover where and how your customers are finding you and coming to you. If you have a mature audience and they’re only looking at their emails, for example, focus on emails.” Today, the Great Northern Retail Summit welcomes Michelinstarred chef Tom Kerridge and Matt Hopkins, MD of The Great British Exchange.
“We’re an online retailer with an app currently in development, so we’re already quite digitally savvy. But I found it fascinating how page speeds and fine-tuning can make such a difference. It’s brilliant to have some real hard facts and data from the experts at Google. We definitely have a better idea coming out of this as to where we should spend our time to boost sales and results.”
From leading homewares and ceramics company ECP Design comes the new Paisley range, a selection of simple yet stunning mugs made from highquality stoneware. Each mug features a ribbed effect on the outside with a plain colour glaze, while on the interior is a vintage print border coordinating with the exterior colour. ECP Design DP1-41
Paisley textiles A collaboration between textiles company Ulster Weavers and home décor brand Mini Moderns, which is known for its distinctive wallpaper designs, the brand-new Modern Kitchen Collection is based on some of Mini Moderns’ bestselling prints, including Paisley Crescent, with a product line-up that encompasses tea towels, oven gloves and aprons. This can be mixed and matched with other patterns, all of which come in three signature colour stories. Ulster Weavers Stand DP2-9
Life in colour It’s a season of change for Carrie Elspeth (pictured). Carrie has added two collections to her mycolourbands brand: a premium charm range and gift card collection. And on top of that, there are new additions to the core range of jewellery with new autumnal designs ready for the season. Check them out on stand DP1-36.
Alice Hall, owner, PinkBoutique.co.uk “I’m from a small charity and our website needs a serious overhaul, which is why I’m here. What I found interesting was the advice David gave on navigation and how to make it easier for the customer to get to what you need them to get to. This is an issue for us right now, we are trying to find ways to make it easier for customers to adopt an animal, or buy from our shop. I also found the Google Analytics stuff useful, it’s so important to stay up with all the changes, not to get complacent.” Caroline Lucas-Jones, branch manager, RSPCA Leeds and Wakefield

Lorna McLelland & Patricia Karn, The Picture Framers, Glasgow “We started as a picture framers and now do gifts too. We do a lot of glassware and different products. There’s a wee German company called Gall & Zick who we’ve just found and they do great bins (pictured above) — you wouldn’t think you could get excited about a bin, but they are really different. And D&G Glassware and Otis are new ones for us, and I’m going back for the bags at Earth Squared. I’ve had quite a successful day so far.”
Sarah and Michelle Perrin, Homely at Hebden, West Yorkshire “We specialise in upcycled English and French furniture, and we’re here to seek out quirky and original accessories and interiors to go alongside that. We don’t necessarily seek out the latest trends as we like to go with what we know our customers like — and of course what we like! But we are attending the Retail Summit about future trends and designs today to see whether we should be focusing more on seasonal trends.”

We’ve already hit the jackpot with Hands and Loom Fairtrade — we love their handmade silk scarves — and are actually just on our way to place an order with Eliza Gracious; everything in their range is gorgeous.”

Being very London-centric, it’s nice to see what other parts of the country are doing considering we sell to the entire UK through our website. We will mainly be focused on Christmas, and as we have never been to Harrogate we are keeping our minds open to whatever suppliers are there. “In terms of trends, I’m seeing
a lot of carnival and boudoir-type styling which is something I’ m looking forward to exploring, as it looks fun but in keeping with the autumn season away from the tropical look we have been focused on over the spring and summer.”

Based on one of Mini Moderns’ most iconic wallpaper prints, Whitby, the print is influenced by 1950s linocuts. The bold wave motif captures the majesty and beauty of the open sea, forming a dramatic horizontal stripe. Fisherman’s overalls informed the signature Washed Denim colourway.

What sort of focus does The GA have on retailers? I am passionate about building The GA’s retail base while ensuring we don’t alienate our many supplier members. We are all part of the same supply chain and whatever the size of business we are in we all need each other. Suppliers need retailers to buy their products and retailers need suppliers to produce the great products that will generate strong sales for them, online or on the high street. Many of the services we offer are equally useful to all our members. I think some people imagine that trade associations don’t really have a role any more. But nothing could be further from the truth — and my job, working closely with Sarah, vice-chairman Jeremy Corner and the national committee, will be to ensure that our members and potential new members are aware of every advantage that belonging can bring.
I am passionate about building The GA’s retail base while ensuring we don’t alienate our many supplier members.
Well, in the past nine months we’ve made some notable improvements to how we operate and the way we are perceived — these were driven by our new chief executive, Sarah Ward. Going forward, there will be more new initiatives, but it is vital that we find new ways of engaging with our members and potential members to ensure that they are fully aware of the many benefits that The GA currently offers them. So, we need to find ways, other than face-to-face contact, for independent retailers to access our services and enable them to dip into these in their own time – hopefully other members will appreciate this approach too.
“
As new chairman, are there any areas of The GA that you would like to improve on, or develop? You must have some plans up your sleeve?

As the first person from retail to hold the position it’s a great honour. But my work has only just begun. I want to build on the excellent foundations laid by my predecessor, Michael Papé. But all of us at The GA appreciate that Brexit has now entered the equation and that there are very challenging times ahead for our members. Our aim must be to ensure that we do everything to help them in the months and years ahead and remain relevant as an organisation by meeting their short-term and long-term needs.

Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival Harrogate 2016
On the doorstep Caron Naylor is lucky with the West Yorkshire location of Home & Gift as it’s just down the road from her store, The Gift House@Blacker Hall Farm in Calder Grove. She gives her tips for a successful trip and tells us what’s she’s looking for as well as looking forward to at this year’s show Harrogate is the perfect venue for me as it’s on my doorstep! I like to visit over two or three days so as not to miss anything. With the layout of suppliers in different halls, marquees and hotels it gives a unique feel to shopping as a buyer, and the town is full of places to eat, even outside if the sun ever appears. At this year’s show I will obviously be looking for new suppliers. We’re constantly changing our ranges around — the hand-crafted market is definitely the strongest it’s ever been — and I’ll visit our regular suppliers looking at their new ranges of cards, wrapping and mugs. I begin with a set plan at a show. I work out where my
first calls should be, which suppliers I need to talk to in length, and the newcomers I need to browse through. There’s nothing worse than running out of time to get round the must-sees so I recommend estimating how long you’ll be at each stop — including coffee breaks of course — so you know what you can fit in. There’s always something new to look at if you have time to spare. We’re looking more into the wrapping market as we give a free gift wrapping service now, and our customers love it. They will also pay for beautiful wrapping paper and bags to take home. The American market is quite big on this and I’d like to expand on it. We’re also looking at personalised gifts and cards as

this seems to be a real growth area. We’ ll be introducing another five new ranges this autumn, aiming more at the male market, children and looking at special events such as Diwali, Jewish occasions, Chinese occasions etc. I’m quite excited about launching our own cards at The Gift House now. After 22 years in the business and a qualified graphic designer, I can assess the designs our customers are drawn to. My team all have a creative flair, so it will be great to give customers a bespoke service. I’m also drawn by the Great Northern Retail Forum where Warren Knight’s Five Secret Social Media Tips has caught my attention as we always need to know more about the exciting world of media. Also, there’s the talk from the award-winning Hopetoun Garden Centre. We’re surrounded by large garden centres who are expanding into cards in a big way, as well as gifts. Farm shops are a little like garden centres, they have nice food shopping, cafes, areas for children to play, and of course free parking. Here at Blacker Hall Farm we find that it’s a day out for all the family, everyone can relax and then call in to the Gift House for all their cards and gifts — a perfect end to the day! I’m really looking forward to this year’s Home & Gift. At the end of a long day at the show my feet tell me they can’t go on any more, but at Harrogate I always find that extra mile in me to attend one or two of the social events lined up. It would be rude to turn down such exciting events as they’re a great way to catch up with friends and suppliers. We all need to be able to talk shop over a little treat!

Home & Gift Buyer’s Festival Harrogate 2016
Hall Q Stand 23
Sparking interest at Harrogate
Harrogate is a great time of year for us to offer any additional support to customers
and showcase our upcoming collections to buyers.
Yankee Candle is looking hot, hot, hot when it comes to creating headlines at this year’s Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival As one of the country’s major players in the ever-expanding home fragrance gifts sector, Yankee Candle is always a big draw for visitors at Harrogate. This year Yankee Candle, which is owned by Newell Brands, will be exhibiting a vast array of exciting products alongside its Milan-based sister brand Millefiori, making its debut at the buyers’ festival. And the exciting input of Italian style and scent means a stand in Hall Q with many surprises in store across two major gift sections. These will start with the launch of Yankee Candle’s spring/summer collection at Harrogate, and the details of the new products have remained
tantalisingly top secret, with no images available at all until the launch of this year’s retail extravaganza. But just what else does Yankee Candle have up its sleeve? The Daily News spoke to UK Marketing Manager Sarah Dixon to find out.
How long has Yankee Candle been showcasing product at Harrogate and how has the buyers’ festival contributed to the success of the brand? Yankee Candle first started exhibiting at Harrogate in 2008 and the show has always given us the exciting opportunity to meet with new and existing customers
Are there any particular anecdotes about great years Yankee Candle has had at Harrogate or product launches that went down really well there? When we first launched the Scenterpiece Easy MeltCup System, customer reaction was really positive to this innovative product. We have since grown the range with new shapes, models and colours. Also for autumn 2016 we are introducing an adjustable timer with an automatic shutoff for worry-free convenience. It’s a great gift for yourself or a loved one, and we predict it’s going to be highup on the Christmas list this year.
What exciting products can visitors to the Yankee Candle stand (Q23) expect? This will be the first time our customers will see the

We are exhibiting Millefiori at Harrogate for the first time ever, and are excited to see how our customers react to this stylish brand new ranges for SS 2017. Each collection is designed and created based on in-depth consumer research, current trends and every fragrance note is expertly considered. Visitors to the stand can expect the same true-to-life and trusted fragrances that they know, love and expect from Yankee Candle. We will also be showcasing Christmas and our autumn winter collections where customers will have the opportunity to place last-minute orders across seasonal and core ranges as well as for accessories and our flameless range of products.
Roughly how many products or ranges will you be showcasing at Harrogate this year? In addition to Christmas and the autumn/winter collections, all of the new ranges for SS 2017 will be available, which will include our offer for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Easter. We will also be exhibiting Millefiori at Harrogate for the first time ever since it launched back in the 1990s, and we are really excited to see how our customers react to this stylish brand.
What are the highlights among your ranges — any product that you expect to sell really well and why? Our Christmas advent calendars are popular every year and have become real collector items for consumers. This year we have grown our offering
across Christmas advent calendars, accessories and gift sets which will make perfect presents. From stocking fillers to speciality gifts, Yankee Candle is a one-stop-shop for all gift giving.
What trends have you seen emerging recently in the home fragrance gifts sector and what do you predict will be big for the upcoming retail seasons? Consumers are experimenting with different fragrances around the home. We have found our smaller wax forms such as melts, votives and tea lights are becoming more popular than ever before, due to the mixology trend and consumers wanting to change fragrances more frequently. And of course, you need beautiful accessories to display our smaller forms, so we are constantly always surprising the market with new shapes and designs of tea light and votive holders. My favourites this year are the Holiday Party martini glass tea light holders.
Finally, what’s your top tip for visitors to Harrogate, and what do you think makes the show so special? I like the close-knit community that Harrogate offers and how the whole town gets behind the show and welcomes visitors. July is also a great time of year for us as we are excited about the new launches but also preparing for Christmas, so it’s a good time to offer any additional support to our customers should they need it. And my top tip? Pack a pair of comfortable shoes for busy days and an umbrella as you can never predict the British weather – even in July!

A lot to shout about
DP1 - 53
For more than 24 years, NPW has been at the fore of the UK’s gifting market. The Daily News caught up with European Sales & Marketing Director, Mark Young, to find out about the company’s new ranges Mark, NPW Gifts are back at Harrogate for the second year running? There is always a fantastic atmosphere at Harrogate Home & Gift; it’s a show with a great buzz. We had a successful show in 2015 and captured more new customers from Northern territories, so we felt it was worthwhile to rebook our stand. And on top of that, it is a great place to have conversations with more new customers.
You’ve increased you stand size quite considerably this year also - what are you looking forward to about the 2016 show? Well, first and foremost, we now have more ranges and product to shout about so we felt a bigger stand would do our ranges justice. There is a huge amount of newness and we want to display this to its best. We’ve also invested in more field sales managers and have some exciting new partnerships with rep groups in Scotland and Ireland – so there is a lot to talk about!

We’ve also got the Jungle Pals collection which we’ve created taking inspiration from animals of the jungle, and finally, there is the Unicorn gift collection which is full of sparkly new products.
Look out for! NPW’s new Party Animal! These augmented reality animated card glasses liven up your party pics! Just download the ‘Party Animal NPW’ app, choose your animal and watch as the masks transform into 3D animal heads that move when you move.
How many products or ranges will you be showcasing at Harrogate this year? We will have four brand new ranges and over 500 products, more than 150 of these brand new!

Retail corner Will it be stags or snowmen this year? Home and gift retailer Barry Seaman, who owns Plate Tableware in Fulham, London, tells us his plans for Home & Gift. “Will it be robins, stags or snowmen? Are we going red, green, silver or gold this year? The Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival has always been a key highlight of my trade show calendar. As well as being the only real show of the summer months, it gives me that kick and a nudge to remind me that I need to start thinking Christmas. As a show for home and gift, it offers a real variety and range of goods to suit all types of shops, wherever their location. For me, as an independent retailer, I get to see my regular suppliers alongside offerings from newer, start-up companies, who have not yet ventured to the shows in London. On a social level the show has a lovely setting and atmosphere, especially when the sun shines. Harrogate offers so much – it’s worth staying a few days. However, it’s Christmas that dominates my search – for products that are fun, reasonably priced and attractive. I often find unusual and quirky products at Harrogate in the form of small pick up items such as decorations, games, greetings cards, candles and gift wrap. Items to decorate the Christmas table and to host parties are important and I will be sourcing new designs in crackers, napkins and paper plates. As well as products, the show is great for collecting ideas and inspiration on festive themes, trends and colours for my shop interior and window display this year. Home & Gift is an easy show to navigate as long as you are systematic. Identify in advance those companies that you want to visit and check out. Then tackle the halls one by one. I usually start in the conference centre and then work my way through the design tents.”
Did you know… Dartington Crystal (Stand B40) will be celebrating their 50th a nniversary in 2017!
Inspired by style Peace of Mind is bringing something fresh to Home & Gift with its latest collection. Designer and director Chris Holden says: “Launching new products is always exciting, but even more so at Harrogate. We have a lovely new Art Deco-inspired collection, that has all the glamour and sophistication of the era, brought well and truly up to date with on-trend colours and modern finishes.” All this and plenty more, you can discover the whole collection on stand DP1-103.
That’s a wrap! The Wraptious team love to support new artists — so much so that they host a biannual competition. Competitors’ last challenge brief was to create three new cushion designs for Wraptious and they had over 500 entries. The results were decided by the public and by stockists. Incredibly, four of the company’s former
competition winners — Laura Clamp, Rhiannon Findlay, Rosalind Dando and Tracey Cooper — will all be exhibiting for the first time at Harrogate this year. Wow! You’ll find Wraptious on stand DP5-25a.

Naturally beautiful Heart & Home’s amazing range of fragrances promise to transform both your space and your mood, all starting with their stylish show stand at Harrogate Heart & Home might only have launched into the booming home fragrance gifts sector three years ago, but this is a brand that knows how to make its mark on the industry. The company has already carved out an enviable reputation for creating candles that are as beautiful as they are natural, combining soy wax with evocative fragrances that instantly transport you to another place. Not only that, Heart &
Harrogate Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival has always been about brand building and recognition, so we have invested time and effort in a great stand, well located and beautifully lit to enhance the product range.
How pivotal is launching new products and ranges at the show? And do you concentrate on Autumn/Winter and Christmas or also
“For us Harrogate has always been all about brand building and recognition” Home’s collection also includes wax melts and votives, with a scent to suit every mood. Sarah Welsh spoke to Sales Director Richard Marsden to find out what Heart & Home has in store.
Can you tell us a little about Heart & Home’s history of exhibiting at Harrogate? Heart & Home was launched three years ago by History and Heraldry to help the continuous growth of the brand. We felt showcasing at the Harrogate Home & Gift Fair would reach customers who we had not traded with us in the past. This will be our third year at the show and in the past two we have opened a significant number of new accounts.
How would you say has exhibiting at Harrogate contributed to the huge success of the company? For Heart & Home the
look further ahead to Spring 2017? We will sell products from all our seasonal ranges at Harrogate Home & Gift, but we will also be launching our Winter 2016 and Spring/ Summer 2017 new launches.
What about this year — what can you tell us about visitors to the Heart & Home stand can expect? We are particularly excited about our winter collection for 2016. Winter sold incredibly well for us in 2015 and we are planning on tripling sales for 2016, such is the commitment from retailers due to the sell through last year. Good stand location is of paramount importance when our product range is one of the fastest growing categories over the last ten years, it means we can keep up with the competition!
Roughly how many products or ranges will you be showcasing at Harrogate this year? And of these how many will be brand new? We now have 30 fragrances in our everyday ranges with a further eight in our Autumn/ Winter collections. At Harrogate Home & Gift we will be launching six new everyday fragrances to come into the market in early 2017.
What are the highlights among your ranges — is there any product that you expect to sell really well and why? Our winter collection in general is a great seller, but in particular we have two new concepts for Heart & Home this year. The first is the advent calendar offering 27 tea-lights in the box to retail at £19.99, and our Selection box which offers 18 tea-lights packaged for £14.99. They are great value for money and make excellent gift solutions for retailers and consumers alike. In addition we are all excited how our Wax Melt collection is selling, especially with our Melt warmers which retail from £6.99 to £17.99 for our electric warmer. The wax melts are so easy to use and have a high percentage of fragrance. The soy wax melts at a lower temperature to others in the market, offering a safer fragrance experience.
What trends have you seen emerging recently in the home fragrance gifts sector? We have found our gift sets have been very well received in the last 12 months and these now feature in our new launches.
Finally what’s your top tip for visitors to Harrogate? My top tip — come and see us first to make sure you are first in line for our new and exciting products from Heart & Home!

What are the best things about Harrogate Home & Gift?
Probably the relaxed atmosphere and the fact you can wander outside to get some fresh air and a drink, recharge your batteries, and then go back in. I’m attending a couple of meetings because we were the winners of the Best Newcomer for the Midlands, North & Scotland in the Greats Awards this year and I’ve had some lovely invitations for drinks off the back of that so I’m looking forward to it.
I’m new to the team but I’ve heard that it’s quite varied, very different from the other shows we go to, which sounds interesting.
Which stands are you really looking forward to checking out?
Which stands are you really looking forward to checking out?
Angela Jones, Lily Blue, Hagley
There are quite a few! Jola Design, First For Baby, Powder, Gisela Graham, Earth Squared and Hot Tomato jewellery are on my list to visit. That’s across the board, and all sorts of different products are in there.
I do the card buying and we’ll be scoping out for anything different. We look for new and up-and-coming artists, we like to support them. On the gifts side the Lightboxes from Ginger Snap are going very well for us.
Which hot trends do you see emerging? We’ve moved on from the tropical, flamingos and neon, I’m now into rustic green and gold filigree, also silver Moroccan style for the new season – we’ve just had a delivery this morning that we’ve brought forward because we’ve had a good couple of weeks. Handbag tidies and the autumn colours of burgundy and muted gold.
Which hot trends do you see emerging? The tropical theme is selling quite well, we’ve got quite a lot of things from Temerity Jones on that front and we like the cactus candles. We also have a party theme from Ginger Ray – we’ve got flamingo cocktail stirrers and things like that.
What’s your top tip for attending the show?
Retailers speak…
From past experience, have a system, go up and down the aisles in order, and take a notebook and your phone for taking pictures. It’s great when you get back and have hundreds of leaflets and you think ‘what was that?’ and you’ve got a picture to remind you.
Retailers attending Home & Gift tell us why they love the show, what trends they see emerging and more Alcohol-related items go well, anything with gin and “tonic, prosecco, pina colada flavours in the bath ranges, home products and candles. ”
Katie Kouzaris, Skinny Whistle, Quorn, Loughborough What are the best things about Harrogate Home and Gift? The variety, and you get a lot of unique retailers there, and there are a lot of different sectors. Last year we went to a couple of the seminars which were really useful.
Which stands are you really looking forward to checking out? We always go to our existing suppliers to see what they have that’s news and then we go exploring some of the new Spotlight areas for people we’ve not heard of. We research beforehand so we know who we want to see and what we’re after. We’re only a small shop so we have definite ideas about what to carry – bespoke jewellery, handcrafted gifts and unique homeware. I’ve made a list already!
Which hot trends do you see emerging? I’ve noticed a lot of flamingoes – I was only speaking with a rep about it last week. It’s not our style as we’re more handcrafted so flamingoes don’t really fit in. We always do well with organic-type products, candles and bath bombs. Also alcohol-related items go well: anything with gin and tonic, prosecco, pina colada flavours in the bath ranges, home products and candles. We sell Vineyard candles in that range, bubble bath, etc.
We look for new and up-and-coming “artists, we like to support them. ”
Germaine Brooke, Peppermint Pig, Cleckheaton What are the best things about Harrogate Home and Gift? I’ve been loads of times – it’s a nice size, it’s very manageable and well set out with a great atmosphere and great location.
Which stands are you really looking forward to checking out? I have a list of about 22 who I want to see. We always like the DP section which is where we head for first. I have appointments at Gisela Graham and Bath House and Lisa Angel jewellery. It’s great when you get the show brochure through and can look through to see what’s there, and Lisa Angel is one I’m definitely heading for.
Which hot trends do you see emerging? Not sure if it’s a trend but I’ve seen a lot of navy blue and blue and silver for Christmas. I’ve already done the bulk of my Christmas order back in January and, thinking about it, there’s not a lot of blue and silver in there.
What’s your top tip for attending the show? Wear sensible shoes! I’ve seen women tottering around in high heels and think ‘how can you do that for nine hours in these sweaty tents and going up and down the stairs’. So sensible shoes and take a bottle of water is my advice.
We always like the DP section which is where we head for first.

Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival Harrogate 2016
Survival guide Neil Anthony is an independent sales agent for the gifts and greetings industry so has learned a thing or two from his years selling on his northwest patch and visiting fairs. Here’s his beginners’ survival guide to trade shows. When I used to see people wandering round trade shows with the pull-along wheelie cases I thought it was because they’d come for the night and hadn’t yet checked into their hotels. I soon learned they were actually trade show veterans and their pull-along cases were loaded up with brochures, leaflets and even samples from the stands they were interested in. You’d be surprised how heavy bags can get when you start filling them with literature. So, if you’re new to trade shows, here are a few tips I have picked up from customers that have been at it for years. First off, I hope you remembered to print your entry voucher before you come to the show — if you didn’t, you will at your next show as this saves a lot of time. Next, remember that even though the aisles between the stands have nice bright carpet, it’s not a catwalk, so leave those fancy high heels at home — and ladies, you should do the same! I’ve seen many an outfit paired with comfy trainers and it’s those people who are laughing after day three, when your corns and bunions are throbbing. Go for comfort not style is my advice. Most people I speak to do a minimum of two days at the shows as this gives them day one to do a recce of the stands you definitely want to see and then the other day or days to re-visit your short list to place actual orders, plus have a look at what else is on offer. If you’ve only one day, split it in half — visit stands in the morning, sit down for a break and to consider what you’ve seen, then go back round placing orders. A pen, paper and copy of the show guide are always handy so you can make notes of
suppliers that catch your eye. Some of my more organised customers mark who they want to see in their show guide prior to visiting. If you’re on a tight budget, it’s always a good idea to bring a drink and a sandwich with you as the food isn’t cheap at trade shows and they have a captive audience. Finally, to get the most out of your visit, it’s always good to place orders while you’re there and can see full ranges out on display. You get a better idea of how things will look in your shop when you can see them out on display. Agents can’t possibly carry every gift item or card design with them, so shows allow you to put together a good story for your store with items on the stands and see how they will look together. Also placing orders at the shows give suppliers some kind of return on their investment, and encourages them to do more shows in the future where you can see the product in the flesh — and the circle continues. Harrogate is definitely one of the more social trade shows as lots of people stay in hotels close to the event so tend to eat and drink in the local bars and restaurants. It’s a great opportunity to exchange ideas and pick the brains of other retailers and agents from all over the country. And it’s not all serious at shows, especially a really sociable one like Home & Gift. Do remember to enjoy yourself too.
