This year’s Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival is all about new, bigger, better, creating an exceptional buying experience aimed at bringing buyers and retailers exceptional results. Opening today, the show runs until Wednesday and sees more than 200 of the 850-plus exhibitors making their Harrogate debut this year meaning buyers can discover a wealth of new brands. Show director Cleere Scamell told the Daily News: “I’m absolutely delighted with the reaction we are getting so far to this year’s Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival. A huge thank you to everyone involved in putting together this year’s show which I’m sure will be spectacular. I’m also really looking forward to seeing the expanded three day Great Northern Retail Forum programme which is covering the ever-changing yet exciting retail market.” There’s an inspirational range of speakers for the Great Northern Retail Forum, with celebrity chef Tom Kerridge headlining, and Google retail industry manager David Green and John Lewis’ Katherine Owen Fowler joining him on the keynote speakers’ list.

Sun shines on the gift industry More than half of UK gift retailers have seen their business grow or remain steady in 2016 compared with the same period last year. The results are from a survey conducted by Lema Publishing, publisher of the Daily News, and shows the strength and ingenuity of the gift retail market during a washout summer for many on the high street. Almost a third said business was better, while a further 29 per cent said it had remained level. One retailer said that continuing excellence from the

While Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival is all about the new, let’s not forget the old. Stephen Thurlow, the third generation to run Alexander Thurlow, has uncovered a Home & Gift catalogue dating all the way back to 1954 — the fifth year of the fair. Back in those days, Harrogate Gifts and Fancy Goods Fair was held in February and was run by the Fancy Goods Association, and it boasted more than 500 exhibitors. “My grandfather and father were two of the names attending that week,” says Stephen. “I’m the third generation continuing this business. And this year, my 18-year-old daughter Lydia will be on the stand too, so that’s the fourth generation at Harrogate.” Stephen will be bringing the 1954 catalogue to the show so visitors to stand C6 can get a Snr who glimpse at how they used to Thurlow er d f an o x n Ale 54 editio 19 e th do it back in the old days! ed attend urth ift — the fo ow Home & G hurl n of the T generatio attendance in e b l il family w in 2016

industry’s suppliers had been key to their buoyant performance, with “good product and better marketing” making all the difference. Sixty per cent of retailers said they had seen increase in sales volumes, with one revealing their sales were up 15 per cent year-on-year. A retailer told the Daily News that consumer confidence remains strong, with “as many customers with a positive outlook as those with a negative one,” continuing to spend.

Hit the trails

Did you know…

Stick to it and you’ll find great products in four distinct categories

The Great British Exchange website now allows customers to order in advance — they call it ‘forward ordering’ — and they have launched this facility in time for Home and Gift Buyers’ Festival. Check out www. thegbexchange.com Henri Davies, chairman of the GA tells the Daily News about their partnering with the Great Northern Retail Forum.

There are four enhanced product trails to help retailers discover the products that are right for them at this year’s Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival. Distinct categories – New In, Christmas Themed, Eco Friendly and Best Of British – have been created to help retailers navigate the aisles and halls at the big show and uncover the products relevant to them. And to make it easier, stickers and swing tags will highlight all the stands that have met the criteria In celebration of products made here in the UK, David Nicholls, feature director for House & Garden magazine, has created the fantastic Best Of British Trail.

Discovering new, trend-setting products is a must when attending any trade show and at Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival, the New Product Trail will make it easy to source what will be hot this coming season. With the ever-lengthening build-up to December 25, it’s never too early to prepare for the festive season. Retailers can get ahead with the Christmas Product Trail and discover fantastic gifts while those keen to buy green can follow the Eco Trail created by TV Presenter and eco champion Oliver Heath, who has selected the greenest products from the wealth of eco-friendly exhibitors. www.homeandgift.co.uk

The company is launching its stunning and unique Elf bust at this year’s Harrogate Home & Gift Buyer’s Festival, with creator and sculptor Matt Buckley in attendance over the course of the fair. Interestingly, the pieces are designed to be used both indoors and outdoors. Make sure to drop by to say hello. You’ll find Edge Sculpture at DP 4 - 17.

What’s app at the GA The Giftware Association’s Lifestyle App is designed to help retailers at trade shows such as Home & Gift as it features exhibitor discounts and special offers. The GA member-to-member app is loaded with details that suppliers have exclusively put together especially for retailer members. Download the app here: https://appsto.re/gb/C75z_.i

“We have partnered with the Great Northern Retail Forum to bring members and nonmembers useful advice. Dave Kukadia, our business development executive, will be introducing the speakers, while the Forum venue will give The GA a useful base. “I’m one of the speakers and on Monday afternoon will be discussing how independent businesses can use this year’s social, economic and design trends to help them grow by staying focused and giving their customers what they want. “I’ll also be talking about the changing face of our high streets – and what we can learn from recent closures – as well as sharing my initial thoughts about Brexit. “And we’ll be launching The GA’s Gift of the Year 2017 competition at Home & Gift too, talent spotting for likely entries and offering special discounts to exhibitors who want to submit products for judging. “There will also be special show offers from suppliers via our Lifestyle app.” Henri will speak on Monday at 2.30pm.

Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival 2016

Mmmm… smell those modern classics!

Susan Kerr owner, Harvey Willis What are the best things about Harrogate Home and Gift? The best things about Harrogate have to be the location and timing - it’s the middle of July so it feels like you’re on holiday a wee bit. It is also a good time to top up on stock for Christmas. In February, it’s hard to think about nine months ahead whereas July is a better time. Finally, everyone is in a much lighter mood and as it’s a nice sized show, we can look at almost everything a bit slower and more carefully.

Which stands are you really looking forward to checking out? We are looking forward to seeing the new Yankee Candle stand also Joe Davies who has a lovely stand and the company are very accommodating. Xystos are a staple diet of any gift shop, so we are looking forward to seeing them.

Stoneglow Candles’ bestselling range is joined by one of its all-time favourite fragrances, Cinnamon & Orange, at Home & Gift. This seasonal special features stunning burnt orange packaging, while the heartwarming fragrance of zesty oranges, spices of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove, and a base of patchouli, vanilla and musk is a proven winner. The range is hand-poured in the UK, and carries a high fragrance content. A winner all round! Visit Stand A32 for more details.

Which hot trends do you see emerging? A continued growth on the appeal of home fragrance products like Scenterpiece from Yankee Candle.

What is your top tip for the show? Wear flat shoes (especially women) and chill out - try to have a relaxing break and at the same time look for new trends.

The Pineapple express... Pop by the Puckator stand on DP123 to check out these adorable Pineapple LED Wall Lights. They’re fruity!

This really is special If it’s something special you’re after – pay the Ashleigh & Burwood stand on B4 a visit. Why? Well, the team have just launched their new special edition scented candle range for AW16. There are three new fragrances to indulge in, and all have been designed in-house and are inspired by the festive season with Log Fires, Christmas Spice and White Christmas all taking prime position in the range.

Did you know… the 200g candles

burn for around 45 hours.

This is our first time at Harrogate. Our focus is on artists, designers and really anyone looking for personalisation and customisation. Also, we can help attendees looking to expand to the US. Caroline Gardner What do consumer’s think when someone mentions Caroline Gardner? Well, if this year’s collection has anything to go by – you’ll be thinking rose tinted. Caroline tells the Daily News more…

What are your top products this year? This year we’re really excited to have the new print within our gift range on display, it’s called rose tinted. With lots of metallic rose foiling, contrasting colours and patterns this range is innovative, fresh and a little funky. We can’t wait to see what our customers think of the new print. Another success we see is our gold-foiled gift bags. We’re really excited to add this new finish to our everyday gift bag range. We think it adds a competitive edge to these products, plus it gives them a feel of newness and luxury.

Scent from heaven

We ask the retailers...

From organic lip balms to natural plant wax candles, the Heaven Scent stand has it all. The British manufacturers have over 23 years experience under their belt – and they think their products are pretty special! “Our Organic Soap comes in simple brown packaging which gives it a utilitarian feel,” says Heaven Scent’s director and founder Daniel Pettitt. Drop by Stand D19 to find out more!

“We come to Home & Gift because it’s a good time of year to buy for Christmas and autumn. It’s also a bit later in the year from the spring shows, and during that gap we’ll have seen trends developing or disappearing, so it brings us back up to date.”

As a show Harrogate really stands out from the rest due to its fantastic location and combination of shops, bars, cafes and countryside. We attend the show as it’s a perfect time to meet old and new customers alike, and it’s a launch event for our AW ranges. The best thing about the Home and Gift Buyer’s Festival is getting to meet up with our customers, both new and old, and getting to show off our extensive range of Britishmade products. We really value having the time at the show to talk in depth with our customers about what we have to offer, how our business is developing, and ultimately sharing the amazing stories behind our products. GARDEN CENTRES Gordale Garden Centre Jill Nicholson, chief buyer www.gordale.co.uk

J

ill Nicholson is one of two main buyers for the Gordale Garden Centre in South Wirral, Cheshire, which offers a coffee shop, play area, landscaped gardens and retail, including a food hall, home department and a gift shop. Jill attends three annual UK trade shows, including Home & Gift with Gordale sourcing from the Harrogate show for more than 30 years. “Here at Gordale, we have one of the largest gift shops on the Wirral,” says Jill. The home department delivers an extensive range of ceramics, glassware and kitchenware from brands such as Joseph Joseph and Rayware; candles include brands like Wax Lyrical, Ashleigh & Burwood and Bomb Cosmetics. Books and toys are expansive — Gibsons for jigsaws and Jellycat for plush — while clothing lines include Hunter Wellingtons and Joules gilets.

On giftware sales “All giftware is selling well, in particular we find cushions, lighting, toys, candles, make-up and jewellery boxes are very popular. Cookware is a good department, too, especially pick-up lines and coloured items. Mugs always do well in all price brackets, and individual pans – not pan sets – sell well. Glasses, napkins and table linen does less well for us.”

We discovered Melt Candles here a few years ago, which are super.

On Harrogate

really different/new/lacking in our range then we look at specific ranges and decide what to buy. We may contact the company later rather than waste time buying at the show. At first, it can be a hard show to get to know, with all the separate venues, but this is what also makes it much more interesting. It’s well organised and you get fresh air. It’s also a relaxed setting. I would suggest, plan in advance and stick to your route.”

“We find Harrogate especially good, there’s a wide range of good companies — small suppliers who offer something different. We discovered Melt Candles here a few years ago, which are super. We always aim, or hope, to pick up a new line each year. We walk the whole show to see if there is something

On shopping at Home & Gift

“This year, we are particularly looking for new gift lines, chunky jewellery, homeware such as lighting, ornaments, pictures. Four buyers will attend this time. We don’t attend any social events as we’re just too busy for that, in the evening we discuss our day and formalise our next moves.”

Notcutts Claudia Roberts, head of Home, Gift, Clothing & Food www.notcutts.co.uk

A

long with two colleagues, Claudia is responsible for buying in the categories of home & gift, clothing and food across all 18 Notcutts garden centres, from Manchester to Oxfordshire, Notthingham to Cheshire. Notcutts is a family-owned business with a heritage of more than a century.

It’s one of those shows that “feels more independent and less mass market.

Notcutts stocks plenty of home and giftware with departments including the Candle Room and The Kitchen Shop as well as gifts for children. Clothing, food, stationery, including calendars, and Christmas Food are also key categories.

On giftware sales “In Home, accessory buys that are impulse-led do well, as do throws and cushions, ornamental, frames and art. Kitchen textiles and mugs are popular, a mug with a dog on it will always sell well. Brands that do

well for us include, for Home, Ulster Weavers as they offer more contemporary prints, and Biggie Best, easy to buy and not too expensive. Scarves sell well, as do bags, especially David Jones, and in fashion, White Stuff and Brakeburn fit our profile. Candle-wise, we’ve had a massive shake-up recently, we now have Prices Candles, which are making a comeback, Ashleigh & Burwood, the Harrogate Candle Company and Heywood & Whittle, all doing well. We also work with Wax Lyrical on our own-brand candles.”

On trade shows “We attend an exhaustive list of trade shows, the main UK ones, as well as the Speciality Food Fair and Pulse, and international shows including Ambiente, Maison & Objet Paris twice a year and the Hong Kong Housewares Fair. I don’t like to miss out on anything, I don’t like to think there’s territory I haven’t walked… you never know what you might miss. I think it’s key that trade shows get the right environment for a buyer, not make it too large and unwieldy, the last thing you want is exhausted buyers and disappointed suppliers.”

On Harrogate “I like the environment, there is definitely a lot to see

and it’s all so well grouped together. It’s one of those shows that feels more independent and suitable, less mass market. I especially like the Made In The UK product on offer, we are keen on supporting that philosophy. It’s also such a relaxed show and because it’s compact and small-ish, it gives you time to really meet with people and get to know what they offer. Last year, we had a very productive meeting with Ashleigh & Burwood, who don’t turn up at any other show, so having the time to meet them here and get to know the product was fantastic. We discovered Harrogate Candle Company there, too, very professional, and we do well with their candles now.”

On shopping at Home & Gift “By July, we’ve usually completed AW shopping so at Home & Gift we’re really buying to top up, doing a quick spot check, and starting to think about SS. We might also pick up a few things for Christmas, in fact, we find Harrogate really good for pick-up gifts between £0-20.”

The Joe Davies stand will be welcoming, exciting and hopefully inspirational – our focus is firmly on delighting our customers

HALL Q, STAND 50

Hooray for Harrogate! Paul Hooker, commercial director of Joe Davies, gives us the lowdown on the hottest trends and his biggest tips for 2016 and beyond — and with a whopping 6,500 lines there is plenty to wow us in Hall Q!

Paul, tell us a little about Joe Davies’ history of exhibiting at Harrogate Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival? We have been exhibiting at Harrogate for over 25 years and the show is our favourite event of the year, everyone enjoys going! Even though it has gone through many changes over the years it has always retained at its core a super ‘festival’ atmosphere and has always been a huge success with the independent retailer. Our whole business is geared to serve the independent trade and Home & Gift has been so important in helping to develop the Joe Davies business over the years.

our Autumn/Winter Collection than at Harrogate. You really get the best of both worlds: the Spring/ Summer collection is in full swing and available for immediate delivery. In addition you can debut the Autumn/Winter range alongside new additions to the current range. With longer lead times from the Far East and over 8,500 lines forecasting and knowing that we have enough stock on order of the right lines can be really difficult. Home & Gift allows us to spot the winners and trends for the forthcoming season, and whilst you will never get it 100 per cent right we do manage to get extra orders in to our suppliers to land when the busy season is in full flow. This means our customers get as much of the right, in-demand stock as possible to keep them going through to December to maximise sales.

How pivotal is launching the Joe Davies Autumn/Winter collection at Harrogate to the business?

Are there any particular anecdotes about great years Joe Davies has had at Harrogate or product launches that went down really well there?

Timing really is everything when it comes to retail and there is no better time for launching

The most successful single line in our history was launched at Harrogate four years ago - Snoozies!

The gift sector is always an exciting and vibrant industry

They are a cross between slippers and socks, we call them cosy little foot coverings. The range was a massive success with the company selling hundreds of thousands of pairs - all to the independent trade - we were taken aback by the demand! Snoozies have undergone many changes and updates and are now a staple part of our collection, with enough pairs sold for over one in 25 women in the UK to own a pair. This year the pre-sell has been very impressive and Harrogate will see the debut of Christmas-themed Snoozies - with bells on, which look set to be another winner!

What about this year - what can you tell us about the exciting things/products that visitors to the Joe Davies stand can expect? With such a big range, across so many different segments of the industry, from occasion gifts to Home Décor through to Jewellery and gifting ceramics there are plenty of exciting new trends and developments to see on the Joe Davies stand. Equilibrium Jewellery has been a huge hit and the

Poppy Collection is a real star, this will be joined by ‘Forget-me-knot’ at Harrogate and a whole new beautifully packaged sentiment collection. White ceramics with gold sentiment messages, particularly on trinkets and plaques should be a great seller, shabby chic home décor ranges are still strong and LED gifts have really taken off. For Harrogate we have produced a ‘best of the best’ brochure on LED product which contains all our hotly tipped lines featuring LEDs. Our balloons have been updated with sentiment messages, new finishes and new shapes, which should sell really well. Aside from the product, the Joe Davies stand will be welcoming, exciting and hopefully inspirational – our focus is firmly on delighting our customers both old and new, helping to find the right product at the best prices.

Roughly how many products or ranges will you be showcasing at Harrogate this year? How many will be brand new? Space on the stand is limited and our team works really hard to make sure that the layout of our stand is welcoming and customer friendly. Logistically it’s very complex and the culmination of over six months hard work by everyone in the business. It all leads to over 2,500 brand new lines making their debut; they will join another 3,500 to 4,000 lines from the Spring/Summer and regular collections, meaning we will have up to 6,500 lines on display!

What trends have you seen emerging recently in the gifts sector and what do you predict will be big for Autumn/ Winter, Christmas and Spring/Summer 2017? The gift sector is always an exciting and vibrant industry, spotting the next trend is always difficult, but we have some great development in progress. Personally I have seen some great bespoke vintage industrial look occasional furniture, lights and statement pieces that could easily make its way into the industry, so that’s something to look out for in 2017. For 2016, white and gold ceramics, LED themed gifts and Home Sentiment Décor.

Finally what’s your ‘top tip’ for visitors to Harrogate, and what do you think makes the show so special? Buy a good spread of any range you like, don’t just buy one or two items, you will find lots more winners that way. Take the time to visit all the halls to find the right suppliers for you, walk the show and aisles logically. My number one tip is start in Hall Q at the main entrance, but then again I am a little biased!

Smell of success For some, home fragrance is something they unveil when they know friends are popping around. For others, scenting the home is an absolutely necessity, regardless of visitors. And for Ashleigh & Burwood’s managing director Andrew Nettleton, it is his life. Andrew sat down with the Daily News to talk Harrogate Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival, new product launches and more

Harrogate has played a huge part in the growth of the business in the UK market

Andrew Nettleton,

Managing Director,

Ashleigh & Burwood

Andrew, tell us a little about Ashleigh & Burwood’s history at Harrogate Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival? We have been exhibiting since 1998, where one of my overriding memories is of being opposite a stand selling Big Mouth Billy Bass, the singing fish (now considered a classic and collectable toy!). Suffice to say, Billy got on our nerves a bit! Harrogate has played a huge part in the growth of the business in the UK market. It’s always been a great venue to meet with existing customers and equally for new customers to discover us.

Can you recall any memorable product launches that went down really well at Home & Gift? The most memorable launch we ever had was, surprisingly, in the year of the global financial crisis. Our stand became so crowded with people wanting to see our new Fragrance Lamps we could not move from one side to the other without squeezing past people. It was like a very crowded bar on New Year’s Eve!

What about this year? We know it’s been a really exciting six months for the company. Our new product development team has been working very hard to bring the development of all

new products forward during the past nine months. And we are now delighted to be in a position where we can preview product a full season ahead of time. This means that at Home & Gift, alongside our new Cosy Autumn and Festive collections, we will also be previewing key products from our spring collection, which is ideal for retailers wishing to tie up Valentine’s and Mother’s Day 2017 early. Our Country Garden theme for SS17 is pretty and feminine. The collection includes products and fragrances designed to tell our country garden story and, of course, they are perfect for the lady in your life come Valentine’s and Mother’s Day. We are also really excited to be previewing scented candles for spring. And equally, we are looking forward to seeing the response to the full launch of the Festive Special Edition Candles for AW16 at Home & Gift.

Roughly how many products or ranges will you be showcasing at Harrogate this year? Our stand at Home & Gift tends to be a little smaller than at other UK shows, but we still strive to show the full range nonetheless. So that’s 579 SKUs on display! It’s great for retailers to see the full range and importantly, to be able smell all the fragrances for themselves.

Andrew says… “We are now delighted to be in a position where we can preview product a full season ahead of time.”

What are the highlights in your range — is there any product you expect to sell really well? We are really looking forward to the response to our Festive Special Edition Scented Candles, since candles are such an important part of the home fragrance portfolio that we’ve been lacking in recent times. The scented candles are launching in two of the best-selling festive scents, White Christmas and Christmas Spice, as well as our brand-new Log Fires fragrance which we are confident people are going to fall in love with. As well as excellent scent release, and beautiful decorative glass vessels, these candles also boast equally attractive and appealing gift packaging finished with a tied black ribbon. The Log Fires Scented Candle is part of our Cosy Autumn launch, for which we are also excited to see the reaction to. We feel the collection is very strong for the season, incorporating a wide range of product, which is all inspired by our Cosy theme. The products appeal to the senses, with their comforting scents and are visually desirable. We think that the Cosy theme, and the products it has inspired, will hold its appeal for consumers throughout much of the year when the weather is less fair; throughout autumn, onto Christmas and well into the New Year, so we are very excited to see the reaction at it’s launch.

Their gifts are hand-picked with love by the team of four with balloon displays a speciality plus a home delivery service.

What do you love about Home & Gift? We go every year. I’ll take my daughter Emma as she’s part of the shop too. It’s nice looking round and seeing things that catch your eye as well as things we buy anyway. It’s nice to see them in reality as we usually order from a catalogue or off a picture and they look different when you actually see them. We can only spare the day unfortunately but it’s the only trade fair we go to so it’s quite important for us.

Shannon Allerton, Lovely Little Gift Shop, Doncaster and Sheffield With a new outlet opened in Doncaster, owner Michael Fitzgerald now has two shops, having been in retail most of his life, and has also built an online store.

What are you looking to source this year? We’re big on weddings at the moment and all the main card companies. We’ll be looking for new stuff, anything that’s different.

Any suppliers you previously discovered here that are successful for you? Michael, the owner, has been quite a few times and he always comes back saying he’s found lots of new things – we have so much in the shop!

What are you looking to source this year? We’ll be looking for jewellery and ladies’ bits. We go into panic mode really because we only have the day so don’t get to look at everything as we should. We find things we want to see and go to them, so we do miss out on the whole show.

The Daily News caught up with some retailers to find out what makes Harrogate Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival such a key date in their diary Fiona Trees, Memorable Moments, Ripon This traditional gift shop in Ripon, North Yorkshire, stocks gorgeous gifts and cards. Owner Fiona Trees has been attending Home & Gift every year since opening her store 10 years ago.

What are you looking to source this year? Mainly gifts for the festive season across all categories. I will pick up anything that takes my fancy, really, but I’ll be focused on finding new lines, especially in jewellery. I would also like to source a little bit of clothing, to have as a standalone, to try it out.

Any suppliers you previously discovered here that are successful for you? Last year I picked up Lola and Gilbert, a really cool brand that designs gifty things like make-up bags, pencil cases and small pouches with quirky and fun slogans on them – it’s the sort of thing that is partly personalised and can work for lots of different types of personalities. These have gone down a storm in our shop.

Barry Seaman, Plate Tableware, London

Operating for just over a decade, this Fulham-based homeware and gift store stocks a contemporary range of tabletop, cookware, accessories and giftware for those with a passion for entertaining at home.

What do you love about Home & Gift? This will be my eleventh year of attending Harrogate. I love the venue and I love the event, especially if the weather is nice. I especially love perusing the Design Tents, where you can discover really unique products. I like that you can find suppliers here that I won’t find at any of the London shows.

What are you looking to source this year? The timing of Home & Gift is great, it marks the start of Christmas for me so it’s very much my research trip, rather than a buying trip. It’s where I discover what trends will be around for Christmas and into the New Year.

Any suppliers you previously discovered here that are successful for you? Last year I discovered Love Your Nation, a gift company that celebrates Britain with design-led gifts personalised by region. I began stocking their London ranges of bespoke mugs and tea towels and these have done really well for me. A great find!

Blooming brilliant! CB Imports goes the extra mile when it comes to sourcing stunning silk flowers, as Sarah Welsh found out when she spoke with CB Import’s head of sourcing Beverley Carter Stunningly beautiful and so realistic you simply can’t tell the difference between them and real blooms – it’s little wonder that silk flowers are currently firmly in the gifting spotlight. Whether buying them for weddings, special events, fashion or even to add an inspiring edge to interior design projects, silk flowers have never been so popular. And as the biggest British importer of silks and greenery, it’s only right that CB Imports should be making their presence felt at the Harrogate Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival. CB, which is based in Leeds with its showroom in Wakefield, has grown beyond all expectations since being founded by Linda and Paul Spencer back in the early 1990s, as a collection of market stalls making and selling dried flower arrangements. Having visited the Home & Gift show back in 2014, the team at CB realised there was a real gap in the exhibition market when it came to top quality silk flowers, and as a result the company is making an exciting debut at Harrogate this year. The company’s entire collection of silks will be showcased to visitors, meaning lucky buyers can select from over 1,200 different products.

Beverley, as head of sourcing for CB Imports, could you sum up why silk flowers are such an expanding area of the floristry market? Our silk flowers in particular are incredibly realistic and we are seeing a huge increase in people using silk flowers and greenery at weddings, events and in interior design — as people simply can’t tell the difference between real and artificial. The other day I was having a pub lunch and I was admiring the vases of flowers, thinking they were real, only to get closer and realise they were actually CB Imports silk flowers – so even I couldn’t tell the difference!

CB is exhibiting at Harrogate for the first time this year. How do you expect the range to go down with retailers? We identified a gap at Harrogate with regards to silk flowers, which is why we will be taking as much of our range as possible

— over 1,200 lines! We think retailers will love our range, silks and greenery are hugely popular at the moment and our unique collections offer some really beautiful artificial options.

What ranges from CB do you predict will be big for the upcoming retail seasons and are there any major colour trends you can let us in on? We have recently sourced a wonderful collection of jewel-toned silk flowers, from deep purple to rich teal that we predict will be incredibly popular for autumn and winter. For Christmas we have opted for a very beautiful collection of regal red silk flowers — a luxurious shade of red they are the perfect seasonal flower.

We know the CB buying team goes to amazing lengths to ensure your silk flowers are as realistic as possible! What are your personal favourite blooms? Yes, I once wrapped up some bluebells from my own back garden in cling film, packed them and transported them all the way to China – just so I could ensure that we were producing the most realistic silk flower stem we possibly could. Let’s just say it was worth the effort! I don’t have a favourite flower as such, I just love that flowers can reflect the seasons or create a mood. I personally

think that is what makes silk flowers so special and our valued retailers seem to agree. We’re certainly looking forward to meeting as many customers as possible at Harrogate and to showing off our fabulous ranges.

Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival Harrogate 2016

Stand B18

Daring to B18 be different Richard Lang has a strong history when it comes to the Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival – as well as show-casing attention grabbing products there, as Sarah Welsh discovered when she spoke with sales manager, Keith Edmondson Richard Lang has built an enviable reputation as a family orientated company that really looks after its customers. And taking ‘business on the road’ to go and meet its stockists, be they garden centres, department stores or boutique gift shops, at trade shows up and down the country is something that everyone who works at the Derby-based company thrives on. But when it comes to the Harrogate Home & Gift

simply central to everything Richard Lang did. We love meeting our customers, getting their feedback and using this invaluable input to influence what we buy and also what our in-house design team works on. We really look forward to catching up with people.” Keith, who has worked for Lang’s for 15 years, has been attending Harrogate himself for the past 13, and says the company prides itself on offering customers

“We’ve had a presence at Harrogate for more than half a century” Buyers’ Festival, it’s always a special experience for the Richard Lang team. “We’ve had a presence at Harrogate for more than half a century, in fact this will be our 54th year exhibiting there,” explains sales manager, Keith Edmondson. “The company first attended back in 1962 at the Crown Hotel when the now managing director Rolf Lang was just seven years old. “He has strong memories of all the stalls, the buzz of the place, of learning the gifts trade right there on the exhibition floor alongside his father Richard. “Even then Rolf knew that engaging with customers and providing them with excellent service was quite

products that are not only eye-catching but a little bit different. “We take our core ranges, top sellers and Christmas range to the show, but we will also be launching some 500 new products in our AW range at Harrogate,” Keith says. “Our buyers travel all over the world, look at what is happening globally and also talk to our customers to ensure we offer things that fill a gap in the market, items they may be struggling to find. A large proportion of what we sell we design ourselves. For example, around 400 of the new lines at Harrogate we have produced inhouse meaning they are exclusive.” Trends that have recently proved huge for Lang’s, and are still gaining momentum according to Keith, include

a summer camping range that has sold very well, and a hugely successful men’s range featuring fun sayings on textiles, ceramics and wood. “We’ve also seen a lot of emphasis on LED items, things such as signs or decorative items with added light and sparkle,” Keith reveals. “One of the new ranges, the Love you to the Moon and Back collection, really plays on this, and features LED bottle candles, signs, vases and oil burners, just to name a few items, and is great for those cosy nights in.” Another expanded range debuting at Harrogate, is Lang’s Plink Plink Fizz collection, that plays on the nation’s love affair with Prosecco. It features signs, bottles and LED pictures among many other items. “When we launched it at our showroom opening just a few weeks ago it was a huge hit,” Keith says. “An additional new venture for Lang’s this autumn is an exciting collaboration with water colour artist Kathryn Cole. “Her beautiful illustrations feature woodland animals, British birds and a feather design in a soft calming colour palette, and the range includes a mixture of textile items, ceramics and wooden pieces. “In addition we’ll also be showcasing our Christmas range, which incorporates warm colourways, glitter, snow designs and natural woods.” It sounds like there will plenty to see on the Richard Lang stand located at B18!

DON’T MISS… The Best of British Trail Celebrate the products made in Britain with a fascinating trail from David Nicholls, features director for House & Garden magazine, who has personally selected 85 exhibitors that embody the Best Of Britain, which each have a tag on their stand so you can find them at the show.

David says: “As a journalist who has specialised in design — both interior and fashion — throughout my career, I’ve always been fascinated with how things are made. What intrigues me is the entire process of going from initial idea to a physical object that makes its way into people’s homes. “This takes such a wide range of skills. Whether you’re a crafter or a brilliant industrialist you need determination and perseverance, and to see this happening in the UK is so heartening. “There’s no denying the fact that it’s not always easy to have your products made in the UK. But for the exhibitors who have Best of British accreditation at Home & Gift, it’s clearly worth the effort — and they’re making it work. “My biggest hope is that retailers who buy into these products pass on the fact to their customers that these are Britishmade. Who knows if it will result in an extra sale — but it’s a good reminder that this country is still producing some of the best and the most beautiful products in the world. That’s something to be proud of.”

James Mace The Art File

Why? Joe Davies staff know Harrogate very well after 25 years of exhibiting at Home & Gift and they know a thing or two when it comes to relaxing in the evening. Royal Baths is a Chinese restaurant set in the renovated buildings of the town’s baths – stunning surroundings and food to match. Quantro is located in the town centre and serve modern European, and the steak is amazing! Cardamom Black is a popular Indian restaurant located in Harrogate’s former Empire Theatre serving great food in wonderful surroundings. And Al BiVio is the best Italian in contemporary and very relaxing surroundings.

Where? The three best pubs to go to directly after the show are, in no particular order, Christies Bar, which is right opposite the show, then the Old Bell, and then just round the corner from the Bell there’s the Fat Badger.

Why? They are all really good pubs, if you like your real ale they all have that, and Cardamom Black
