No more kicking into the back of your car seat!

KneeGuardKids4, the first fully adjustable crash tested footrest helps to maintain the correct sitting position of the child in every forwardfacing car seat without a support leg in place, whenever travelling by car, regardless of the distance. It is suitable for children even up to 9-10 years old.

When children’s legs are dangling, strong pressure under their knees and calves, as a result of disordered blood and lymph circulation, is causing discomfort, numbness, pins and needles sensation and also weights the knee joints. Footrest eliminates numbness in the child’s legs as they will no longer lean against the edges of the car seat which causes pressure under the knees.

What’s important, KneeGuardKids, when supporting legs, makes the child’s back rest against the seat and its head remains within the protected area. It is easy to assemble and adjust to individual needs of a little passenger.

Suitable for cars with and without ISOFIX. In both cases, the footrest is fixed equally securely. In the event of an accident, it does not move around the vehicle cabin, so it does not pose a threat to passengers. It is recommended for children who kick into the seat in front or experience sore legs and back.

The KneeGuardKids4 footrest was singled out in the Concept & Innovation Baby Products Association (the United Kingdom - 2022) and being noticed by the experts panel at the largest children’s industry fair in Europe, Kind und Jugend Fair in Cologne (Germany - 2022) and at the Kid’s Time fair (Poland - 2023). KneeguardKids4 is the 2023 Parents’ Choice and Influencer’s Top Award Winner.

Editor’s letter

Welcome to the car seat supplement brought to you by Nursery Today magazine.

Car seats are such an important and staple product category for many UK nursery retailers. These are the one nursery product that are a requirement by law for infants and young children and as such are taken seriously when we consider safety.

For nursery retailers in the UK, car seats are an important product due to their role in ensuring child safety during travel. Current UK law states that children must use an appropriate car seat until they are 12 years old or 135 cm tall, whichever comes first.

Nursery retailers must be well-versed with current regulations, as well as the various types of car seats that are available across the varying stages as a child grows to provide accurate and reliable advice.

Demonstrations of car seat installation and use are essential when we look at this nursery product sector, as they help customers understand the practical application of the law and ensure correct usage. By showing how to properly install and adjust car seats, bricks & mortar nursery retailers can really stand out and enhance customer confidence in their products and services. This knowledge and ability to demonstrate compliance with safety standards are crucial for building trust, ensuring customer satisfaction and driving sales.

Among the pages of this issue, you will find many key and leading car seat brands all of whom innovate with safety at their core and provide great support to their retail partners by way of information, demonstration of product and of course new product launches on car seats that all comply with current safety standards.

You will have also spotted that our front cover hero is Joie where they feature their latest innovation, Sprint. Sprint is a convenient infant carrier made for everyone on little one’s team. Parents, grandparents, and sitters alike can drive confidently knowing that baby’s seat is installed properly, thanks to the built in ISOFIX connectors that lock directly to a vehicle’s anchor points in seconds – no need to wrestle with a seatbelt or lug a base from car to car. Sprint is a perfect addition for any newborn – the slim, baseless profile provides an easy backseat fit for families with small vehicles or multiple children in car seats. Sleek and stylish, sprint comes with all the Signature styling you would expect, as well as the most up to date R129 safety compliance, including side impact testing. You can find out more by simply turning to page 8.

This issue we also feature The BPIA (formerly The BPA). Take time to turn to their article which starts on page 16 to find out the latest changes to Child Car Seat Regulations. Of course, if you would like more information on The BPIA or gain advice with regards to car seats, you can visit their website: www.b-p-a.org

Finally, this issue we also take time out with independent retailers My Baby Stroller, Baby Lady and Paul Stride to gain their views on this emotive product category.

Retail Interview

My Baby Stroller

Sitting comfortably

Nursery Today’s Editor, Penny Franks, caught up with My Baby Stroller’s owners Richard & Laura Smerdon to gain their insights into the car seat sector and how car seats perform for the business as an independent nursery retailer.

Do your customers often feel confused or overwhelmed when first looking at the range of infant car seats, and how do you help them navigate their options?

Customers can feel overwhelmed by the choice of infant car seats, as they all vary in price and functionality. We help by asking what they need from the car seat, spinning, reclining etc. It also helps them when the car seats are already bundled together.

How do in-store demonstrations and consultations assist in helping customers choose the right infant car seat to meet their needs?

Showing our customers a small range of car seats in demonstrations really does help make their minds up. It’s

sometimes hard for them to understand all the stats you are telling them without showing them in person how it works. But keeping it to a small selection helps to minimise confusion.

How do you convey key car seat safety messages to your customers?

We tell every customer the safety points on each seat they like. How and where it was tested. We tell them what is legal, what is recommended and our personal opinion.

Are there specific infant car seats that are currently proving particularly popular with your customers, and why do you think this is the case?

People are loving a whole range of car

seats at them moment in our area. The slide tech from Maxi-Cosi 360 Pro, the one hand release from the Cybex Cloud G, and the great recoil from Besafe Beyond.

Have you noticed any significant innovations or changes in the infant car seat category recently? If so, how are these impacting customer choices?

Being able to operate with just one hand is proving very popular at the moment. Moving the handle on the Besafe Beyond with one hand or lifting the Cloud G o the base with one hand people love. We are finding that our customers want to have a car seat that lasts a long time, but not at the expense of safety and comfort, the beyond gives them this. They also are very keen on it having a spinning

base, this is now a deal breaker in some cases.

Do you feel adequately supported by the car seat brands you stock in terms of training, marketing materials, or customer service?

Of course, we get great support from all the brands we have, with onsite training, unistructural videos, regular visits and calls.

Does social media play a role in how you promote or educate customers about infant car seats, and if so, how?

It does help a lot, but we feel our customers get a real understanding by coming in store and being hands on and learning from seeing them and testing them out.

We tell every customer the safety points on each seat they like. How and where it was tested. We tell them what is legal, what is recommended and our personal opinion.

How do you keep abreast of consumer trends, new products or new innovation within this category?

We are always updated by the brands with any new products that are coming out and keep in touch with our reps. With regards to trends, they have been fixed around spinning bases this year.

Pebble 360 Pro² has arrived

In an update to their much-loved Pebble 360 Pro, Maxi-Cosi launches the Pebble 360 Pro², now including a fully mesh baby-hugg inlay utilising ClimaFlow technology and beautiful, premium fabrics and finishings.

The Pebble 360 Pro² is also TÜV certified for use on an airplane, so baby can travel safely and securely on holiday, in their very own car seat. The rotating FamilyFix 360 Pro slide-out base (sold separately) makes it easy to e ortlessly rotate and slide your child towards you in any recline position, while the ISOFIX connectors and support leg provide the safest, easiest installation in the car. The car seat can be safely belted into any car without the base, and once outside, it easily attaches to compatible pushchairs in one quick click. The Easy-in harness stays open and out of the way to help parents fasten baby in the seat with minimum fuss. www.maxi-cosi.co.uk

How important are car seats to your business?

Car seats are very important to our store. Being situated near Birmingham Women’s Hospital we get last minute partners rushing in to buy an infant seat. We also sell many travel systems, so infant car seats are key for that, people love a bundle.

Supporting road safety

Every year, more than 1700 people die on UK roads and another 30,000 receive serious, life-changing injuries. It must stop and that’s why Graco is supporting road safety charity Brake and investing in a campaign to raise awareness of Road Safety Week 2024.

Luisa Rollins-Svensson, Consumer and Trade Marketing Manager, Graco, explains: “Brake’s vision is a world with zero road death and injury, where we can all move in a safe and healthy way, whoever we are and however we travel. Until this vision becomes a reality, the charity is working to stop crashes on our roads, reduce harm when a crash happens, and help every road victim get the support they need, for as long as they need it. It’s vital work and at Graco we’re proud to be playing our part in supporting this.”

As part of this commitment and Graco’s continued drive to support parents on a range of issues, the brand is undertaking a car seat safety awareness campaign to coincide with Road Safety Week from 17-23 November 2024. Following the success of Graco’s recent ‘Family Matters’ campaign, which saw the brand support families facing financial concerns, Graco will be partnering with relatable parents and delivering the latest campaign via Instagram to its engaged audience.

The CYBEX CLOUD T…

What’s Next?

Safety, innovation, and lifestyle are top priorities for CYBEX, aiming to always develop products that make everyday life safer and more comfortable for children. All products follow the CYBEX D.S.F. innovation principle, the unique combination of unmistakable design, the highest safety standards, and smart functionality - “For all tomorrow’s people”.

The award winning CYBEX Cloud T i-Size is one of the most popular infant car seats in the market. It’s innovative stretch & recline technology creates a true lie flat, ergonomic position; the angle in which it o ers babies is a firm favourite of many consumers and retailers alike.

In addition, the 180° rotation mechanism on the Base T is a feature that parents simply don’t want to live without. Parents being able to turn the infant car seat towards the car door e ortlessly to on and o -board the child in one simple motion has become the norm and a necessity for many new parents.

CYBEX’s superior all-round air ventilation on the PLUS fabric ensures a comfortable temperature in all seasons, featuring a specially designed 3D mesh structure that is six times more breathable that conventional material.

Customers should always aim to use their seat to the maximum limits, and the Cloud T can be used from birth to approx. 24 months (87cm/13kg).

CYBEX Cloud T i-Size

So, what’s next after a child has outgrown their CLOUD T i-Size?

CYBEX believe parents should be given the freedom of choice when it comes to how they travel with their child in a car seat. Once the maximum limits of the infant carrier have been reached, parents can choose from the Sirona T i-Size or the Anoris T2 i-Size from the CYBEX Platinum range. Parents that are committed to rear facing until 4 years old should choose the Sirona T, however those unsure or looking to forward face from 15 months & 76cm should consider the Anoris T2.

If they want the comfort, convenience, and the interaction that forward-facing travel brings, then the airbag technology in the Anoris T2 i-Size allows parents to do this in the safest way possible.

The Anoris T2 i-Size is the successor of the Anoris T. The game-changing seat has industry leading airbag technology built into an impact shield which sits across the child. This airbag technology makes the seat 50%* safer than conventional forward-facing five-point harness systems.

The Anoris T2 i-Size is a spacious seat with plenty of room to grow suitable from 76cm –125cm, 15 months – approx. 7 years. The adjustable impact shield and headrest is perfect for a safe, snug fit at every stage!

Baby Products Industry Association

R44 car seats can no longer be sold in the EU or Northern Ireland

The UK’s Baby Products Association clarifies changes to Child Car Seat Regulations and aims to address continuing industry confusion

It’s widely known that child restraint systems (CRS) must be approved to a United Nations (UN) regulation to be legal to use in the UK, as well as other countries around the World. There are currently two CRS regulations in force: UN Regulation No. 44 (R44) and UN Regulation No. 129 (R129). R44 is an older regulation first introduced in the 1980sand changes introduced in 2023 mean it can no longer be used by CRS manufacturers to type-approve a new restraint. Instead, they must use the more advanced R129.

What is Changing?

CRS that are already approved to R44 can continue to be manufactured, sold and used in Great Britain, but things have changed in some countries. As well as stopping new approvals, R44 was also amended to give countries the option to stop accepting R44 CRS after 1st September 2023.

Now across the European Union (EU) and in Northern Ireland separate legislation is in force which means R44 CRS can no longer be sold.

Making sure we don’t confuse Regions:

This EU legislation does not apply in Great Britain (England, Scotland & Wales) and so R44 CRS can continue to be sold until further notice with no restrictions. As yet, the UK Government has not shared plans to stop the sale of R44 CRS, but of course this is subject to change.

The EU legislation applies only to the sale of R44 CRS in their territory. R44 CRS can continue to be used in the EU and NI, so if you travel to the EU or NI for a holiday with your R44 CRS, it will still be legal to use there.

What does this mean for manufacturers in Great Britain (England, Scotland & Wales)

Many CRS brands produce their products for sale in EU markets, which combined are of course normally bigger in market turnover size than Great Britain. They must make their own decisions as to whether or not they continue to produce R44 CRS for sale in Great Britain. Some have already taken the decision to exit R44 CRS sales in line with the above EU legislation and will not make CRS specially for the Great Britain, however, this is purely a commercial decision.

Latest changes to R129

The latest 04 series of amendments to UN R129 have been published which, amongst other things, further clarifies the one belt route rule, meaning that for both integral and non-integral CRS, regardless of any changes of configuration

that might be needed as a child grows through the type-approved height range, there can only be a single belt route.

Rules regarding booster cushions

The BPIA would again like to clarify the situation regarding booster cushions. Despite some contrary publicization these have not been banned. New type-approvals to R44 group 2 (for children weighing 15kg and over) have not been possible since January 2017 but existing models (those that were type-approved before the change) can continue to be manufactured, sold and used. Any newly developed models can now only be approved for group 3 and used by children between 22-36kg. They must also carry a label that states they can only be used by children over 125cm in height.

Booster seats (or high back booster seats as they are also referred to), which are considered the safer alternative, are another option for children of this size. They are adjustable to cover a wider range of weights and heights. For combination products (those designed to take a younger/ smaller child initially) the child uses the integral harness in the seat unit until they reach the weight specified in the instruction manual and then uses the car’s seat belt as with other booster seats.

A copy of the Baby Products Industry Association’s comprehensive guide: Child Car Seats – Ending the Confusion can be downloaded the BPIA website: www.b-p-a.org

Car Seat specialist

Nursery Today’s Editor, Penny Franks, caught up with Baby Lady’s Managing
Director Debbie Homer-Davis to gain her insight into the car seat sector and how car seats perform for the business as an independent nursery retailer.

Do your customers often feel confused or overwhelmed when first looking at the range of infant car seats, and how do you help them navigate their options?

Customers are confused by the huge range of seats on the market and don’t understand why one seat can be less than £100 and others with a base can be over £400. We explain the di erence between the models and the features and also the di erence in safety rating so the customer is in a position to make an informed choice.

How do in-store demonstrations and consultations assist in helping customers choose the right infant car seat to meet their needs?

We guide them through the ranges we sell and try to advise them on the most appropriate on a case-by-case basis. If they have a 3-door car the swivel may not be relevant, the same if you are trying to get three car seats across the back of the car. It’s about finding the right fit for each customer.

Customers on a budget might benefit from a really good stages seat rather than an infant carrier and then a cheap second stage seat. It’s all about tailoring the product to the customer and you just can’t do that on the internet.

How do you convey key car seat safety messages to your customers?

Our highly trained sta are ideally

situated to help explain the benefits of one option over another - again it’s all about tailoring each suggestion to fit the customer.

Are there specific infant car seats that are currently proving particularly popular with your customers, and why do you think this is the case?

Both Cybex Cloud T and Maxi-Cosi pebble 360 Pro have proved exceptionally popular and we are selling these with a large number of our prams over suppliers matching options. Customers want a swivel base and they also really like the lie down function of these seats. We are also seeing some customers really value the lightness of the Maxi-Cosi Cabrio especially if they live in a flat or perhaps having a planned C section.

Have you noticed any significant innovations or changes in the infant car seat category recently? If so, how are these impacting customer choices?

The most significant changes must be the introduction of swivel bases and car seats that can recline into the main stream. We experienced lie flat seats before with the Kiddy Evoluna but now these have been adopted by Maxi-Cosi and Cybex they are almost expected by the customer. Swivel bases again are now becoming the norm. I am also excited by the new BeSafe Beyond

range with their long term sustainability.

Do you feel adequately supported by the car seat brands you stock in terms of training, marketing materials, or customer service?

I think there is nothing better than hands on training and some suppliers are better than others. Some have not provided as much in store training as we would like this year, probably due to sta ng levels. There are online portals but its not the same.

Marketing is also a moot point. In a store we need brochures or leaflets, customers don’t come here for us to do all the work and then to send them back online because we have no point of sale. Especially as sometimes we are competing for sales with the suppliers themselves.

Customer service is very good from some suppliers but could be improved by one who I won’t name here. Car seats are such a di cult area as you can’t leave a customer with no car seat. One supplier in particular is very slow to sort out any returns and leaves us with a big headache with the customer as they also don’t provide loans.

Does social media play a role in how you promote or educate customers about infant car seats, and if so, how?

I think social media as a means of providing information is now a given,

we spend a lot of time producing content for both car seat fitting and features and often share this on our channels including YouTube

How do you keep abreast of consumer trends, new products or new innovation within this category?

We visit the trade shows, read trade magazines and also liaise with our suppliers looking at what’s new and what innovation is coming.

How important are car seats to your business?

Car seats are the second biggest part of our business after wheeled goods. We have a large proportion of the store devoted to showcasing a big a range as we can manage to display.

We have resisted putting in big in-store display stands so we can actually fit in more seats to give the customer the best choice - which as an independent is vital. We also spend a lot of time installing and checking car seats for customers. We are a car seat specialist centre and customers travel to get this advice and for us to install and check the seats in the car.

I have always been of the opinion that car seats as a safety item should not be sold online and would love to see suppliers support stores like us more for the value we bring to the industry and not just as box shifters.

Car Seats take Centre stage

Nursery Today’s Editor, Penny Franks, caught up with Paul Stride’s owner

Kevin Clarkson to gain his insight into the car seat sector and how car seats perform for the business as an independent nursery retailer.

Do your customers often feel confused or overwhelmed when first looking at the range of infant car seats, and how do you help them navigate their options?

Yes, customers often come in not knowing exactly what they want often saying ‘I know I want it to spin as my friend told me to get this’ or being confused over exactly what isofix is. On top of this they all expect that every seat will fit every vehicle. Generally, we go back to basics with them and find out if they are wanting it to fit a particular travel system, if they have a budget in mind, and also obviously check what vehicles they will be using it in. We then progress from there showing them several options that would be suitable.

How do in-store demonstrations and consultations assist in helping customers choose the right infant car seat to meet their needs?

Hugely and having our own car park is a big bonus on that front so everything can be shown in the customers cars as well as on the demo rigs we have in store.

How do you convey key car seat safety messages to your customers?

When going through the di erent features of the seats if the safety

aspect comes up we have our own list of many seats that have been tested by ADAC and highlight the ‘safety’ score on these rather than just the ‘overall’ score achieved. As we know the safety score is really the important piece of info here.

Are there specific infant car seats that are currently proving particularly popular with your customers, and why do you think this is the case?

On infant carriers it is still the Cybex Cloud T and the Maxi Cosi Pebble 360 Pro that are the main sellers, the standard Pebble 360 having picked up also since the PRO was introduced.

I have high hopes for the BeSafe Go Beyond as time goes on and it becomes better known. The Avionaut Pixel Pro for those with low birth weight babies is also a good seller.

Have you noticed any significant innovations or changes in the infant car seat category recently? If so, how are these impacting customer choices?

Definitely rotation, unless a budget purchase then any seat without rotation does not sell well for us, this has been coupled recently with the demand for reclining seats.

Do you feel adequately supported by the car seat brands you stock in terms of training, marketing materials, or customer service?

In most cases yes. The part I find di cult is the brands that sell direct to the public who then actively apply discount codes on their own websites

instantly cutting the margin achievable for their retail outlets. Let’s face it without retail outlets then the brands would find it very di cult to launch new products to consumers if they could not see it in the flesh in stores.

Does social media play a role in how you promote or educate customers about infant car seats, and if so, how?

Unfortunately, social media can be a real problem with disinformation in car seats as well as in general life currently. Whilst on the positive side it can be a great tool the problem is with some opinionated groups who highjack others posts and do not give a balanced view.

In the end we should all be striving to increase awareness on a general level to lift the overall safety in all cases. I felt sorry for Which? who did a

general campaign on social media highlighting the law and the relevant Un R129 standard but had nothing but comments criticising them for stating the law at minimum of 15 months rear facing. They did say the longer the better but had to state the law as it stands without being pulled over the coals about it.

How do you keep abreast of consumer trends, new products or new innovation within this category?

I generally rely on speaking to friends regularly in the industry and of course rely on trade shows and training sessions with di erent manufacturers.

How important are car seats to your business?

Car seats are a large part of my overall business.
