Understanding the market Product Launcher spoke to Online4Baby’s Managing Director, Christy Foster, to talk about why New Products and Innovation are important to them as a nursery retailer. Why are new products that launch important to your business? It’s key to remaining competitive and appealing to those customer segments who are looking for the ‘latest’ products. It also demonstrates as a business that you understand the market, trends and consumer demand. As well as this, if it’s a new product that introduces additional safety measures or solves an identified problem and fits within our product and pricing strategy…we want to stock it. What do you look for when brands launch new products? We look at a range of factors such as 6 product launcher
innovation, originality and whether it offers a significant point of difference in the market. We also consider whether the patterns and/or colours are in line with the latest trends and what we know sells to our different customer segments. Obviously price is also a key factor and where it fits within the category compared to products of a similar specification Packaging is often an overlooked element of a product launch but is important as that ‘unboxing moment’ can help turn a purchaser into a customer who goes on to buy more products from that brand. You only have to look at how the whole technology market followed Apple when they introduced beautifully clean,

minimalist packaging that shows off the product and communicates their brand values to understand its importance. How often are you searching for new products? We try and keep our ears to the ground throughout the year but the trade shows give us an opportunity to see large numbers of product launches in one place so the cancellation of these this year has definitely had an impact. We also have alerts from the likes of Nursery Today which are always a good way of seeing what is new to market. Having good relationships with brands is also key as this is often where we’ll hear about new innovations or products first.

Do you feel that there are sufficient new product launches each year within each product category? It varies from year to year but overall, I think the industry does a pretty good job at looking for gaps in the market, looking forward at likely trends and identifying problems that need solving. Sometimes you see a product launch and think ‘how has no-one thought of that before?!’ but that’s why manufacturers spend huge amounts on R&D. Are you interested in looking at new products that may be from a fledgling company? Although brand is a key driver in the decision-making process for many, challenger brands can often come from nowhere and take market share very quickly so ignore them at your peril! Do you feel as an industry we have sufficient innovation? The strength of the sector would indicate that in the main we do but there’s always room for improvement. Both manufacturers and retailers have to look forward and take learnings from other industries to ensure the sector continues to thrive and provide safe
innovative products to customers. The last few months highlighted areas within our own business that needed improvement and accelerated our plans to transform the business and ensure we are a key player for many years to come. In which category have you seen the highest level of innovation? I think car seats is the one that sticks out as having the most significant advancements over the last few years. Advancements in technology and manufacturing alongside a deeper understanding of safety and improved testing have brought about significant changes in areas such as rear facing, energy absorbing materials and side impact protection which is great. These developments however are only effective if the car seats are fitted correctly so there’s a continued educational requirement we need to fulfil as an industry around their use as well as regulations and terminology, which can often be confusing. Over the years have you experienced a new product which launched to become a must have by your customers?
As well as spin car seats, side sleeping cribs are a huge seller for us. This was a development derived from a desire from parents to be close to their babies in a safe environment and which has now become a staple in many households. What benefits do you derive by showcasing new products either online or on your showroom floor? It obviously brings traffic to the website and customers into the showroom who are searching for those specific products, but keeping your product offering up to date is key to appealing to new audiences and conveying that you are a forward thinking business. Often new products bring with them advancements in safety and function, so it’s important to us that we’re offering these to our customers. We had a Nuna mixx next launch just after the showroom re-opened which had a huge interest and sold out almost immediately so it shows that these events can have a significant impact on revenue and create a buzz both in physical stores and online. product launcher 7

Now there’s an idea Over many years, the nursery industry has been known as one which provides innovation and new product launches which have been showcased and demonstrated across our UK and International trade shows.
W
e have seen many fine examples of innovation in the nursery sector over the years, ranging from safety advancements and features on car seats, materials, fabrics and folding capabilities on wheeled goods and the steady rise of the Compact Fold, the introduction and growth in bedside sleeping cribs through to technology being introduced even within the feeding sector. We have also experienced a huge shift in baby monitors, from being simple analogue monitors which have kept pace with technology to digital, video and those that have movement sensors, products that embrace the use of Apps and last year, we even saw through the Innovation Awards further innovation on safety gates, which contained a level of technology and the rise of UV sterilisers! However, does this mean that innovation is always a good thing in Nursery, or should it be a problem solving solution rather than innovation
for innovation sake? We Asked Richard Bamforth, Managing Director, DCUK for his thoughts. “New products and innovation are extremely important within the industry as long as the two are combined to make ‘innovative new products’. Something that solves a problem in a better way or provides a solution to a challenge none of us had thought of before is crucial to the development of the industry. “A constant churn of ‘me too’ products or variations on a theme doesn’t really add anything and can just make things all the more confusing for consumers as they try to spot the difference between them all. Evolution is nice, but we need sprinkles of revolution on a regular basis.” Independent retailer, Sara Hubbard of Whites Farm Baby Barn told Product Launcher that for them it is really about products that offer solid solutions to current parenting needs. “Innovation is a funny word - we often
feel that innovation is important, but innovation for the sake of it is sometimes unnecessary. It reminds us of that old saying “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” - innovation which leads to solutions for real life problems and difficulties is always amazing. We often feel however that within the nursery industry too many ‘gadgets’ or ‘problem-solvers’ can lead to a generation of quite worried parents, who lose faith in their own abilities without these products.” As an industry, of course we have seen many ‘me too’ products over the years, however, depending on how these are marketed to the consumer, these clearly have a place and can quickly become the next ‘must have’. Nursery retailers are always on the look out for that something new that really offers a solution to a problem through innovation, or adds an element of newness to their business to generate a refresh of either their shop floor or website.

Jörg Schmale Kind + Jugend is missed: we hear this from many of our customers, who have exhibited regularly in Cologne for years and use the most important annual platform of the industry to present new products and marketing strategies. Nonetheless, the respect for our decision to cancel the trade fair in this so unusual year was great. Especially considering that the cancellation came early and the decision was made after careful consideration. But where do we go from here? Kind + Jugend is a fixed major event for the industry. It brings together supply and demand once a year at the international level. Innovations and further developments that are presented at Kind + Jugend find their way from Cologne to the trade and ultimately onto the streets and into children’s rooms. The Innovation Award, which Kind + Jugend initiates annually and which honours the best and most convincing innovations, is a symbol for the inventiveness of the industry. It is selected and evaluated by a competent jury of experts, of which 12 product launcher
Kind + Jugend is known as perhaps our leading International nursery trade fair and is known as a superb launch pad for many new products and of course the coveted Innovation Awards. The wheeled goods category continues to grow and although many may feel this is perhaps an oversaturated market, the demand for newness and new entrants into the category has not decreased and there is clearly a place for each brand represented. New product launches in this sector also give the opportunity to refresh floorspace and give a newness to websites. With trends continually changing and parents seeking something that they are proud to push, many are now also looking for additional functions, for example, how the product folds, the weight, travel systems that have adaptability with infant carriers (of a different brand) enabling a ‘mix and match’ approach, lie flat capability, rearward or forward-facing seating options - all of which must also reflect a level of style. So to sleep Sleeptime is an area that causes many anxieties for new parents. Fortunately manufacturers and suppliers keep this sector refreshed with great sleeptime solutions. Sleep is probably one of the most important things (aside from eating) that a baby does, however this is also an area that can create huge anxieties for many parents which is perhaps why we experience a great uptake on all related products from bedside cribs, mattresses, monitors through to bedding. Bedside cribs have seen a huge uptake in interest and is a continually growing category with many brands now embracing this as a staple within their product ranges. This is perhaps one of the largest innovation sectors seen over the years within sleeptime solutions and one that hasn’t stood still, with many great new product launches to satisfy the growing consumer demand. Social media has definitely enabled this product category to evolve and draw awareness not only in assisting driving

FanFinders through their online platform Your Baby Club surveyed more than 2,500 mums looking at consumer habits within the toy category. Here are the highlights of the survey. ■ 86% of mums – both those expecting and with young children – said they are interested in tracking developmental milestones. ■ ¾ (76%) of mums consider playing and toys ‘vital’ for their child’s development. ■ 88% of mums with babies or young children say they actively encourage ‘child-led play’. ■ Due to the pandemic, almost 30% of mums said they will be buying more sensory/ development toys as they are concerned about ‘lack of social interaction’. ■ Both expectant mums and those with young children consider educational and developmental potential (79%) the most important feature of a sensory/development toy. ■ The other priorities were its ability to encourage creativity (62%) and interactivity (53%) These ranked above practical features like durability, longevity and ease of cleaning.

Furnishing desires Nursery furniture is big business. Parents will continue to need somewhere for baby to sleep, solutions for storage and also items that accessorise the nursery. Furniture for the nursery is a staple product category for many Nursery retailers and we are fortunate that we have a great selection of products to chose from. With many parents opting for furniture sets to give a co-ordinated feel to the nursery this is one sector that doesn’t stand still and over time has really caught the imagination of the consumer. When it comes to colourways, white is still a prominent choice of colour, followed quickly by natural tones (grey and natural wood) - but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a consumer looking for that something different. Another notable point of interest is the desire for co-ordinated room sets
with cotbeds firmly at the centre of this. Parents are looking for items that represent style, but also functionality and value. A good cot bed is an ideal solution as this takes baby through to their early years, while a set of drawers with perhaps a removable changing top can be removed leaving a functional item of furniture way past the age of five! When looking at nursery furniture, we also have to consider the wood used. With many now eco-conscious the majority of brands ensure that the wood used during manufacture comes from sustainable sources. Feeding chairs are another item that might be considered when looking at furniture for the

Pramland embrace new products Product Launcher spoke to Pramland’s Manager, John Barker, to talk about why New Products and Innovation are important to them as a nursery retailer. Why are new products important to nursery retailers? New products are important for a couple of reasons, firstly they drive new and existing customers to the store hungry for the next must have baby item. Secondly, they help drive innovation in the industry, there aren’t many truly revolutionary products in the world so when something new comes along it gives the industry a chance to developed products to compete. What benefits do new products bring to your shop floor or website? The average consumer loves new things. Run a test in your store and I can guarantee you’ll see immediate results. For an entire week don’t post anything about any new products or brands in your store on social media, save them up as you’ll need them for the next week. You’ll find that your Social Media is quiet and you receive less new likes and interaction. The following week post regularly about new arrivals in your store and you’ll find your Social Media goes crazy. New products excite customers and they portray your

business as being successful. Customers see that your range is expanding, your are a progressive business and are happy to shop with you.

Do you feel that new products reflect current consumer trends and buying habits? Absolutely. We always look at new products as having a potential six months life span. We assume that a new products bubble will continue to grow and then, at around six months it will either pop or just happily sit there on top of the bath water. Why would it pop? Simple, the internet big boys have got hold of it and are stripping any margin you made out of it. This just means it’s time to clear your stock and look for the next big thing. Social media and “influencers” (when did that become a job?) can certainly help make or break a new product.
The truth is that if a product lacks any of these it will no doubt struggle in the market.
When it comes to new products, how important is style, function and value? It’s hard to say. Some products sell because of the style, a certain function or just because it’s a bargain.
Is there a new product that has previously been launched that is now a must have with your customers? We’ve seen many over the past few years but I have to say that the Oyster
Over the years, what has been the most innovative new product launch you have experienced? For me I would have to pick the Cybex Cloud Z and Base Z. It’s a product that was perfectly timed as many parents had been gripped by rotating fever. The fact that it offered parents a modular car seat solution with the added benefit of a rotating function meant it became an instant must have. I’m just amazed that other brands haven’t followed Cybex’s lead and released their own version.
John Barker 3 is without a doubt the best selling pram we have ever carried. It is the perfect blend of price and function and parents love it as much as we do. There aren’t many products that you could honestly say are the only product you need to stock. Is there a particular category where you feel we have seen the highest level of innovation? Car seats have to be the obvious category. It’s an area of our industry driven by constant innovation. It always blows me away how far car seat technology has come in the 13 / 14 years I’ve been in the industry. Do you feel we have sufficient innovation in this category? Innovation in our industry is odd. Lets be honest, there’s only so much you can do with four wheels and a seat unit. As a rule we get regular innovation on certain sectors such as car and home safety but prams and strollers see a more stop - start approach.
Is there a particular category where you feel we have seen the highest level of new product entrants? The travel stroller sector is absolutely swamped with products. There are so many in the industry now that we could fill our shop with just travel strollers.
