news ‘Did you Know…’ TAP into export funding Andy Crane of BabyStyle, executive committee member of the Baby Products Association, explains how companies in the nursery industry can access grants to exhibit at international trade shows.

New partnership for Little Chick Little Chick London’s products are all designed with health and well-being of mother and baby in mind and the company is proud to announce its corporate partnership with the national Backcare charity. According to the national library of medicine, it is estimated that around 50 percent of pregnant women will suffer from some kind of lower back pain at some point during their pregnancy. The Backcare charity’s mission is to reduce the prevalence and impact of back pain on the individual and society. Rachelle Harel of Little Chick London explains: “A subject that constantly comes up with our young mums is backpain, whether during pregnancy or whilst nursing their baby. We have tried to design our products to give a level of comfort, for example the 4-in-1 Support Pillow which gently supports the tummy and hips when sleeping on the side and can also be used to prop the baby up comfortably whilst feeding. “By partnering with the Backcare charity, we can work to raise awareness about the causes of back pain and the best methods to alleviate it.” For more information about Little Chick London visit www.littlechick.london or contact Rachelle by email: hello@littlechick.london or call 07976 773 486.

The Department of International Trade (DIT) started working closely with UK trade associations in multiple sectors a few years ago, realising that these organisations provide the most effective communication channel to British businesses. The Baby Products Association was appointed as the Accredited Trade Organisation (ATO) for the UK baby products sector and is now responsible for the allocation of TAP grants for international trade shows for the entire industry. Under the present system, the Baby Products Association nominates to DIT the international events that it feels the industry will benefit from attending most. For 2017, these were Kind und Jugend in Cologne, CBME in Shanghai and ABC Kids Expo in Las Vegas. Companies exhibiting at any of these trade shows can apply to the Baby Products Association for a TAP grant and this is regardless of whether they are exhibiting in UK Pavilions or elsewhere at these shows. The grants are allocated under strict DIT guidelines, with a maximum grant allowance of six per company. Unfortunately, there is currently no scope for grants to attend trade shows in countries other than those mentioned above. However, the association is willing to nominate additional events for 2018 if enough companies express an interest in attending. Just one of the activities of your trade association! Full details about eligibility and application forms can be downloaded from the website at www.thebpa.eu

Advertorial: NATIVE VIDEO

Screen to be seen Your vision on screen is now critical for your business ears ago, creating a video for a new product would have seemed like a luxury for the few, now it is a necessity for all. The power of video cannot be underestimated, it is now the preferred medium for consumers. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousands words, so now the question is how much is video worth? You don’t have to look far to see the influence of video, look at any platform and you will see it; from social media to retailer websites and exhibitor shows. While traditional methods of marketing and storytelling are becoming less popular, video is currently the favoured medium – a result of the rise of the smartphone and the plentiful social networks that make sharing content so easy. Not to mention video’s unrivalled ability to engage and entertain.

Y

According to Cisco, the technology giant predicts that “in 2017 video will account for 69 per cent of all consumer internet traffic and videoon-demand traffic alone will have almost trebled.” Marketing-savvy businesses are all looking to get a piece of the pie – and rightly so. The Guardian hits the nail on the head in its article: “When it comes to potential reach, video is peerless.” Video’s natural channels – primarily YouTube and Facebook – are used by billions of people. And on those channels people habitually share, over and over and over again. Especially when they come across a decent video. Done right, video is easy to watch, understand, digest and remember. It

Over the last two year s Nat ive Video has worked wit h a vast arra y of clients; from the bigg est na mes , to start-ups and everything in betw een

Points to note William Studholme takes us through what to consider when investing in video.

1. Purpose It’s imperative to think about what you are going to use your video for - are you aiming for entertainment and going viral or to introduce and educate on a product? You need to be clear on the purpose. doesn’t have to cost a bomb but it can boost the credibility of your brand no end. William Studholme, Managing Director of Native Video states: “If you are looking at bringing a product to market, you have to have a video. Retailers will ask for one, your consumers will want to see one and frankly you need it because if your competition has one and you don’t, you will be at an immediate disadvantage.” Over the last two years Native Video has worked with a vast array of clients; from the biggest names, to start-ups and everything in between. From beautiful lifestyle, to instructional and explainer style videos and event videos, Native Video covers it all. Being specialist in the

nursery market means they are best placed to deliver befitting videos with minimal input, leaving clients free to get on with everything else their business demands. Jamie Robinson from Bababing adds: “Video is now a very important medium for our company and we wanted to work with a company that understood our brand and it’s DNA. This they did from the outset and made the whole process very easy for me.” Arguably the number one nursery specialists, William concludes; “Video is having it’s time invest in it, work with a good team and let people see on screen how passionate you are about your product. You will reap the benefits.”

Visit www.native-video.co.uk to find out more and see some of the videos they have created. If you are interested in a video, please email william@native-media.co.uk.

2. Have a brief The same as you would for a photography brief, catalogue or press release, you need to work to a brief. Once you are clear on the aim of your video, make it clear what you want to see in it. Make sure whoever is creating the video for you has taken the time to know and understand your aims, your product and most importantly, your brand. You need to work with someone who ‘gets’ you.

3. Be imaginative Your viewers need to feel like they’re on a journey and they need to be entertained. Think about interweaving images, music and graphics to keep things interesting. Also, think, if your video is for social then you need to do something to make the end user stop and take notice of your video almost immediately - you have to think what will make you stand out.

4. Be flexible There’s no one formula for creating an engaging video for business; you’ve got to be flexible and create something that suits the type of message you want to get across. Similarly, take advice from the professionals. Creating great video for business is an art, and not something just anyone can do.

5. Don’t compromise on quality Brightcove reports that consumers are 62 per cent more likely to have a negative perception of a brand that publishes a poor-quality video, so it’s important not to wing it when it comes to video for business. By getting a decent professional involved, they will look after it all and ensure you get the best quality footage, audio and story, leaving your viewers with a sterling impression of your business.

6. Be yourself Just because video’s a new channel for your business, you still need to remain true to your brand, values and messaging. Your tone and identity should always be the same, wherever people discover you.

d e t t Spo All about the must haves Suzie Howes, Head of Licensing and Marketing at Rainbow Designs, the Home of Classic Characters, looks at the importance of the ‘nice to haves’ in the nursery market place.

ringing a new life into this world and becoming parents is one of the most exciting and precious times we can experience. Along with all the amazing emotions that it brings also comes responsibility and

B

expense. The pressures of health and safety compliance in our modern society dictates the majority of the items we have to purchase for baby. Car seats, travel systems, feeding equipment all fall into the practical essentials category when it comes to infant purchases. However, as much as it is about the ‘must haves’, retailers really must continue to think about the ‘nice to haves’ too. When I visited the Baby Show earlier this year I was surprised by the lack of toys and gifts on display, so as we head to Kind Und Jugend I am intrigued to see what is going to be on offer for new parents and hopefully not just the latest practical product or system to hit the market. At Rainbow we pride ourselves on making memories and creating lifelong emotional connections through our products and this really isn’t to be underestimated. New parents are educated in the value of skin to skin contact with their newborn, so the importance of texture and feel for the youngest of our customers is most certainly at the forefront of our minds when creating our nursery collections. As vital as it is to have all the practical essentials for baby it is just as important for parents to be finding that special comforter or cuddly that they want their newborn to snuggle up with. These seemingly small decisions really do have the ability to create bonds that may last for many years and form parts of key childhood memories.

ello and welcome to my little corner of Nursery Today. Firstly I think I need to clarify that I’m not a journalist nor have I ever hoped to be. I am however someone that spends his time working in the nursery industry. There are days I wish I didn’t, but most of the time you will agree the life of a nursery store employee or owner is generally a pleasant one. For those of you lucky enough to never have met me I’m the short, round fellow waddling around Harrogate with the beard and tattoos. I’ve worked in the family business, Pramland for 10 years now. Our store is your typical independent store located on a bustling road leading into Hull’s city centre. Around us you’ll see the usual collection of boarded shop fronts and a plethora of charity shops, and right in the middle is us. The store opened in 1950 (despite the sign declaring 1960 – I blame the sign writers but I don’t think anyone believes me) and has seen three owners in its time. Let’s think about that for one minute, 1950 – many world changing events happened that year, the stand out news items for me have to be Arsenal winning the F.A. Cup against Liverpool and the launch of Eagle Comics – Welcome to the world Dan Dare and Captain Pugwash. 67 years later and how the world has changed, in fact, how the industry has changed. If we could travel back in time to 1950 to visit a mum to be we could make her head spin with the

The 10 ye ar s I’ve been in th e industry have been like a w hi rlw ind of ch an ge . I apprec iate th e fac t th at I’ve on ly sc ra tc he d th e su rf ac e but as a rel at ive ne w co mer I’m re gular ly floored by th e sp ee d of ch an ge . products we have now, baffle her with sheer choice and make her look at us in outright disgust at how lazy we have become with all our products of convenience. Change is inevitable and something we as an industry not only have to embrace but must embrace. The 10 years I’ve been in the industry have been like a whirlwind of change. I appreciate the fact that I’ve only scratched the surface but as a relative new comer I’m regularly floored by the speed of change. In my 10 years alone I’ve witnessed the rise of the internet, a very long ‘double dip’ recession, the death of traditional travel systems and the sudden, and let’s be honest, unexplained fashion of attaching bits of Chewbacca to your pram hood?

Products are one thing, colours are a whole new kettle of fish. A casual search on the internet will reveal some truly frightening fabrics from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Gaudy colours and mismatched fabrics have given way over the years to fabrics that would be at home in any DFS advert. And then the world went grey. Grey everything. Let’s hope the current trend moves on soon and we can get a tasteful splash of colour back in our lives. With all this grey our shop floor is starting to look like a Buster Keaton movie set. So this brings me on to the future of this little article and the purpose for my ramblings. Over the coming months (or until the Nursery Today team decide I’ve bored you all to tears) I’ll be taking a look at the industry we choose to be part of. I’ll be taking a look at the ups and downs of selling prams and dealing with customers. How to make the most of social media, dealing with customers that feel you’ve set out to taint their little ones upbringing and dealing with suppliers that sometimes seem to be working against us. If my words do nothing else I hope they can go some way to reassuring you all you are not alone, these things happen to us all and we, as a body of people have a friendly shoulder to cry on when things go wrong. On the brighter side I’ll be sharing some of the thoughts and ideas on where our business is succeeding. So until next time, have a great month and I hope to see you soon. Phew, I made it and I managed not to crack any bad jokes!

Feature NIGEL PLESTED

The world turns quicker towards K&J... Written by: Nigel Plested o here we are at another Kind Und Jugend, and what a difference a year makes. In the duration, which has spanned the gap between my last offering to this valued publication, I have taken up a brand-new role, working within a worldwide team, in a wonderful business head quartered in a different continent. As one would imagine the resulting scenario can be somewhat disorientating. This is married with the fact that with any change comes a whole new set of creative, commercial, and category orientated challenges but without fail, the world keeps turning, the days come and go and the deadline looms large as we get ready for the pinnacle of our yearly routine. It’s a bit like Christmas, with a shared sense of excitement, repetition and reliance; a trade show which now dictates our global timetable with a metronomic quality. Just like Christmas, the speed at which K&J comes around seems to have a tangible, ever increasing momentum. Now, we could put that down to my ever-increasing middle-aged condition and a nostalgic sense of what used to be… when maybe the show was a little smaller and I was two decades younger but the truth is hopefully based in some of the wider challenges that we all face and the increased pace, which is undoubtedly changing the way our industry adapts; not just my diminishing age. In the first instance, I will put it down to the human condition and accelerated need for speed in everything we do. If there is one thing that has decreased, it is the time expectation of new product delivery and turnaround. In some categories of our industry, the design and development cycle has been enhanced by software developments, a stronger and more capable set of supply partners, 3D rapid prototyping and globally appointed teams who can work as the world turns. Therefore, the creative and realisation timeframe is indeed foreshortening and becoming ever more critical to both business and brand. Married to speed, is expectation. Innovation, as I have suggested in past articles, is a ‘push and pull’ relationship. The push is internally driven as we all work to better ourselves and compete with an ever more complex and varied range of businesses. At the same time our customers are ‘pulling’, and continuing to redefine their channels and their needs of those channels. Newness and

relevance for a more sophisticated shopper are key, whether they are looking for products governed by price, or wonderful experiences which will define their parenthood and shape their experiences as a family. This is all set within a world of broader opportunity. We see established markets changing in terms of wholesale and retail dynamic, whilst establishing markets are establishing themselves faster than we can react. As a result, brands are developing their relevance in a wider set of territories, quite diverse from their own. This global swell is challenging brands to think in new or different ways, to re-interpret what, why, and for whom they choose to innovate, not based on ideas or function, features and or benefits, but cultural adaptation and localized need. Speed, expectation, and opportunity mean that we are working towards multiple K&J’s all at once and it has become the calendar event for brands around the world. It is ever present and stands as a critical milestone in a globally consolidating marketplace, where we get to share our endeavors and recalibrate our proposition, year on year. So, who’s coming to the next one? I’ve already booked my flights…

WHITES FARM BABY BARN

A bit of all white Nursery Today questions Sara Hubbard, Owner, Whites Farm Baby Barn in Colchester. As a growing family business, we delve deeper to find out what has been the driving force behind their success. When did you first open your doors? The store first opened in 1993 and originally was part of the Nippers franchise.

What was the inspiration behind your store?

The inspiration was rural farm space being used in new ways, and in the case of the Nippers Franchise, nursery retail outlets. When we bought the business in 2008, our vision was to have a family run business providing amazing service and beautiful products. We wanted our store to reflect a more old-fashioned approach to customer service, where face-to-face interaction takes priority. Coming from a large extended family, and with five children (and now two grandchildren) I understand the emotional importance of preparing for this time in your life, and feel privileged to share this special experience with our customers. It truly is a family affair here, with my two younger daughters working with me in the store, my husband on hand behind the scenes, and my stepdaughter and two grandsons as chief product testers. Our customers often comment on the relaxed and friendly environment in the store, and I strongly believe it is down to us working together as one big happy (literally) family!

How did you choose your location?

I didn’t, it chose me! In 1998 after the birth of my second child, my son, I was looking for part time work and stumbled across this little gem in a beautiful countryside setting. Who knew that 20 years later the business would be mine and going from strength to strength!

W Would you consider yourselves as a one stop shop for all a things nursery? th Y we would; we try and offer something Yes in every department, whether its prams, fu furniture or gifts and toys. It can be hard to compete c with online sellers, as being a smaller sm independent we cannot hold as many m products to show our customers. We d feel however that everything a parent do c could need is well represented in our store and a we are always on the lookout for new and a unique products.

H How important are brands to your business and why? y

B Brands are very important to us here. With the massive increase in international W marketing campaigns and the use of social media to launch new brands and products, customers are more aware of what there is on offer and often come to us specifically for a certain brand. We love to work with brands that hold the same sa values we do; quality products and customer driven service.

Do you have a particular product range that performs well for you at present?

At the moment the Joolz Day2 is absolutely flying! With the introduction of beautiful new colours and improved features, it has sent sales through the roof. Every Joolz enquiry ends in a sale!

And what about a ‘must have’ by mums - are you experiencing anything at present?

Every customer who comes in looking at infant carriers mentions how their friends, relatives etc. has told them they 100% need an isofix base. Most new parents are buying

into modular systems that grow with their child and we are seeing seat belt fitting becoming much less popular.

How do you keep abreast of current nursery trends? Have you noticed anything in particular?

We check in on social media such as Instagram and Facebook every single day, and often observe what new mums seem to be talking the most about. As well as this, having two young grandsons, my stepdaughter and her friends are always informing us of the next big thing. We are noticing that customers are wanting a consistent colour palette across every purchase, matching pushchairs to interiors and so on. Grey is a huge trend for us in every department!

We work in a very emotive industry, how do you manager your customer service?

We listen. We keep our customers updated on the progress of their orders and take time to get to know them and their lifestyle, in order to recommend the best possible product to suit them and their needs. We also offer one–to-one consultation appointments, where customers can book one of our members of staff for as long as they need to go over everything baby related.

Do your current suppliers offer you sufficient support or is there anything further they could do for you? We feel we have a brilliant relationship with all of our suppliers and account managers and feel supported in everything we do.

INTRODUCING THE

LINEN COLLECTION Our suppliers understand that every business is different and work closely with us to tailor their support to make sure we do the best we can with their product.

How does your website operate, do you currently sell online or have plans to in the future?

We have just revamped our website to give it a fresh, streamlined appearance, but have no plans to sell online. We believe that with such big purchases, you need to see and feel the products in front of you, not buy through a computer screen.

How important is social media to you and what benefits does this bring?

Facebook is our biggest form of advertising and customers use this on a daily basis to contact us with enquiries. We also use Instagram and Twitter and have found that with a growing generation of young parents this is definitely the way forward. Most people now get their information through social media

channels We also like to use our social channels. media to share interesting articles, new products and super cute photos of our growing family, which our customers love; making them feel like they’re part of the family.

Do you attend trade shows? If so, why are these important to your business?

We do, we are attending the Cologne trade show this September. We believe it is always important to keep an eye out for new and exciting products, but it also gives us a chance to look at suppliers we deal with and refresh our memories of their full range.

And finally to the future are there any exciting plans that you would like to share with us?

Yes! Next year we are finally having a well-deserved holiday, to watch our youngest son play ‘soccer’ at college in America. But on the shop front, we are hoping to open a second store within Colchester and grow our little family business even more. With all the children we have, I’m sure we’ll have no trouble finding staff !

BABY BIRDS

How far in advance do you plan your visit to K&J? As soon as I can - I always stay in the same accommodation so I re-book when the dates are released. Flights are also cheaper the earlier you book. Quite often the accommodation gets fully booked as it’s such a busy city. What is the main reason you feel that UK independents should attend? Sadly nowadays it’s the only place where the big brands are in one place. Few of them attend Harrogate so it’s essential. Do you have a specific product category this year that you will be focussing on? No I look out for new trends and new colours coming through. I look to see if anything exciting is coming to the UK. Do you feel this is a good exhibition to spot upcoming trends? It’s the best way. It’s a showcase for what is coming both to the UK and overseas. Are you interested in products that have won or been nominated in the Innovation Awards? Yes absolutely - it’s a great way for brands to be highlighted if they have a good product. K&J is huge and you can easily miss great innovation. The Innovation Awards spotlight those products.

Brendan Terry

BABYCARE INTERNATIONAL

What is the main reason you feel that UK independents should attend? The great thing about the Cologne show is that nearly every manufacturer of nursery products are present at this show. Many stands you can just walk on to without an appointment. Any new or innovative products will be on show at K&J. You get to see the complete collection of each company and you will get expert demonstrations too and tips on presenting the products in your own shop. Plus unlike trade shows at home there is not the same pressure to place an order. One can look, touch and enquire and move on to the next stand. Every year that I have gone to the trade show, I have always found something new to try. Nursery products do keep evolving so it’s important to be up to date on all the latest products and trends. Do you have a specific product category this year that you will be focussing on? I will be looking for more car seats, as that is still a growing category in our shop, sleep accessories like the Candide range are great to see as they have new innovative products every year on show. I will also look for more pick me up lines too. Do you feel this is a good exhibition to spot upcoming trends? Yes I do. I think anything new will be shown at cologne. Remember - it attracts buyers from all around the world and most companies that I work with such as Nania, Candide and Thermobaby will be launching new products at the show. Are you interested in products that have won or been nominated in the Innovation Awards? I always have a look to see what has won or been nominated. Sometimes I think wow what a great new product and then other products I’m baffled as to why they won, but that’s just my personal opinion.

JJAN STEWART PRAMS

H How far in advance do you plan your visit to K&J? pl Cologne is almost upon us once C more although it doesn’t seem like a m year since we returned. Jan and I have learned from previous visits that it is wise to book the next year’s trip early, on or around the turn of the year if possible otherwise the hotel prices can be scary. What is the main reason you feel that UK independents should attend? I think this will be our 16th trip to Cologne and definitely not one to be missed, anyone that is serious about their business needs to make the effort and attend what is not only a fantastic exhibition, but also an amazing city to visit. We stay on for a whole week to also enjoy the city. What advice can you offer other independents who attend? Of course there will be the usual mind boggling array of exhibitors but other than a passing glance

during your walk round one can pretty much ignore about 70% of what is on offer. This of course will leave more time to get around the exhibitors that will be making a significant difference to your business during the coming year and of course out of respect it is always good to make appointments, plan in advance and enjoy their generous hospitality. Do you feel the show offers products that demonstrate innovation? Innovation is of course important but we usually find that it comes from existing stalwart exhibitors as opposed to pop up businesses. These pop up ideas never seem to take off and their only certainty is that they will fill your stockroom and drain your bank account, so best, I think, to wait and see what the big players come up with. Jan and I are very much looking forward once again to meeting our business peers, most of which, I have to say, have now become old friends.

Louise Weaver

KIDDIELAND STORE

How far in advance do you plan your visit to K&J? We normally plan our visit just after Harrogate although this year we only booked quite recently! What is the main reason you feel that UK independents should attend? I think the main reason for the independents to attend is to be on point with the new products/colours. Going to K&J gives you the opportunity to have the newest lines on the shop floor as early as possible. Do you have a specific product category this year that you will be focussing on? Wheeled goods will definitely be our main focus again this year, furniture and bedding are also a must for us. Do you feel this is a good exhibition to spot upcoming trends? Yes. I think to really find new ideas and trends you have to attend. Having the opportunity to see the products in action all at the venue makes it much easier to choose which products are best for your store. Are you interested in products that have won or been nominated in the Innovation Awards? Yes to a degree. We like to keep up with modern and innovative products, but also have a large customer base that want to stick with the more ‘traditional’ lines.

BABYLICIOUS

Ian Davidson

How far in advance do you plan your visit to K&J? We ensure that we have an apartment booked on an annual rolling basis, so we know that is always sorted prior to us leaving, with our flights sorted in December/January - we like to ensure we are well prepared. What is the main reason you feel that UK independents should attend? I love both Kind Und Jugend and the city of Cologne. I always feel as though I’m welcome and it makes me feel as though I’ve arrived at my ‘other home’ away from Liverpool. For independents from the UK, K&J is a great way for get a first look at what is coming and the show deals are superb.

Washable 100% Natural

Do you have a specific product category this year that you will be focussing on? Normally yes, but this year I am an open book as I have all categories covered. I’m looking for a new special gem or two to compliment what I already have. That said though, I would like to find a nice Christmas range, so will be keeping my eyes open! Do you feel this is a good exhibition to spot upcoming trends? Definitely! You can always see what’s going to be a hit coming through, although over the years there have also been a few misses too! I hope the up and coming mint colourways comes through in a big way as we have seen some lovely hints from car seat companies and in some strollers too. Let’s hope Mint is the new Grey! The prints are on the catwalk in a big away so hopefully this will also come through into bedding and perhaps some of the cheaper strollers. It’s all very well doing good accessories in packs in the top end, but the middle end needs to step up its game. Anyone can make a grey melange fabric, but in my mind it’s becoming boring! Are you interested in products that have won or been nominated in the Innovation Awards? Yes, I am interested in award winning products. Most of the ranges that I stock have won something or another and the European awards are a lot more about the product, not just the end consumer vote.

123ABC UK LTD

How far in advance do you plan your visit to K&J? We always book our accommodation one year in advance and flights around six months before the show and d allll our appointments are usually in the diary around 4-6 weeks before we go. We do leave one afternoon free for any late meetings which always happens. What is the main reason you feel that UK independents should attend? The show is quiet overwhelming in size but a great information gatherer for both independents and suppliers to gauge what the trade plan on launching onto the UK high street in the coming year. Where else can you now see almost all brands in just a few days. Do you have a specific product category this year that you will be focussing on? We try and go with an open mind most years but with wheels and furniture still giving us great year on year growth figures for all three stores we will continue to focus on these groups. Do you feel this is a good exhibition to spot upcoming trends? Not easy to spot trends at cologne as a lot of the stands are “closed stands” so it makes it very hard to trend spot and as most of the product never makes it to our shores it is not something we go looking for. Are you interested in products that have won or been nominated in the Innovation Awards? We like to be aware of products that have won an Innovation Award but this would not sway our decision to stock a new product that had not been nominated or won.

What a way to travel Travel Systems are an ideal solution for many news parents, but it can be a mine field out there. We speak to those in the know to find out more. s an item that is heavily researched, travel systems aren’t just about selecting a brand and buying anymore. These systems have notably become more sophisticated as time moves on. Although these are viewed as good value for money, now with the use of adaptors that can be purchased, the car seat bought may not necessarily be the same as the travel system brand. Retailers are noticing this and with the ever pinching household budget are finding ways to work a solution that still delivers a level of margin. Gary Watts (independent retailer WH Watts) told us: “I think customers are starting to find things rather expensive after the price hikes of the last six months or so. “However, most people do purchase their pram as a travel system. We now price everything in store as a car seat package as it makes it possible to offer the customer a good deal whilst still maintaining a decent margin.” Andrew Hammond (independent retailer 123ABC UK Ltd) thinks that although they may begin with looking for a complete system compared to a mix and match solution, after seeing what is available by way of demonstration in store, this can change. “Our customers don’t necessarily come in looking for this type of option, but when they are shown products that are mix and match they never seem to have any issues with it.” This is a heavily researched category and the use of search engine tools, online blogs and reviews are reflecting this. Gary has experienced this first hand. “Customers are definitely doing more research prior

to their visit to our store and from my perspective at the moment nothing is more researched than the pram.” Our FanFinders survey would agree, with more than 88% of those surveyed stating that they conducted research prior to purchase. Nikki Bhogal (Head of Marketing, Dorel) feels that this is an emotive purchase. “We tend to find that a car seat is a more rational purchase whereas a pushchair is a more emotional purchase. The legislation requirements and different fitting options with car seats means that a lot of research is done in advance of purchase.” What role do brands play in this sector? Andrew feels that this is a brand dominated sector, as in all products in the wheeled goods category. We asked Nikki for her thoughts. “There are some clearly successful brands however smaller, more niche brands with different designs have been entering the market more recently.” Gary agrees and told us: “Almost all consumers are brand led in this product sector, although elsewhere in the market place I have noticed a scary amount of cheap products being pushed around the streets which are obviously purchased on line and almost certainly do not, and will not, comply with UK standards.” We asked Andrew how important is product demonstration to his customers? “Product demonstration is the biggest advantage we have over online retailers to show the customer the quality and functionality of the product and get them excited about their chosen travel system. “Within the brands we work with the training they offer on existing and new products is excellent and all our staff are very knowledgeable and show great willingness to continuously learn and work with the products, which usually finishes in a great end result.” There is a clear advantage of being able to demonstrate this type of product instore. “I think product demonstrations are extremely important to both ourselves and to the customer.” Says Gary. “A good instore demonstration can help make a decision, gives our customers a greater understanding of the product and more importantly helps prevent issues with the product once the customer has started using it.” We can clearly see the importance of a good product demonstration for consumers from the FanFinders survey, with nearly 74% saying that this

was of importance to them to assist them in their final decision. Take a look at the following pages, where you will find products that are currently available to order.

focus KIND UND JUGEND x

The call of Cologne Kind Und Jugend, 14th-19th September 2017 t’s that time of year where we will all gather again at one of the world’s largest trade fair platforms in the nursery industry. Kind Und Jugend is notably an international fair and one of the largest when it comes down to the baby and children’s outfitting sector. If you are serious about your business and you are looking to browse thousands of new products and spot upcoming trends as they emerge, then Kind Und Jugend is for you! Louise Weaver (Kiddieland Store) is one such visitor who will definitely be in attendance. “The main reason for the independents to attend is to be on point with the new products/colours. Going to K&J gives you the opportunity to have the newest lines on the shop floor as early as possible.” We spoke to a regular exhibitor, Diono, to ask why Kind Und Jugend is an important exhibition in their yearly show calendar? Jo Ebdon-Muir (Head of Marketing & Product) told us: “We really enjoy Kind Und Jugend. Every year it seems to be growing with more visitors. We’ve found increasing numbers of retailers from the US are now travelling to Cologne, as well as those from Europe and Asia so it gives us a great opportunity to inspire people with the brand. “The show enables us to meet all our distribution partners in a short period of time and showcase the upcoming ranges in the best possible way. This is particularly exciting this year as we have taken on the We Made Me baby wearing brand and are also showing a number of new Diono categories. Plus being nominated for an innovation award means we have high hopes for the show.” Independent retailer Derek Bavaird (Jan Stewart Prams) has been visiting the show for numerous years and understands the advantages of making the trip to Cologne. “This will be our 16th trip to Cologne and definitely not one to be missed. Anyone that is serious about their business needs to make the effort and attend what is not only a fantastic exhibition but also an amazing city to visit.” Opening their doors on the 14th September, this four day event is set to surpass all expectations. Nearly all of the industry players are represented at this trade fair and they will present their new products and further developments from the children’s furniture, safety seats, textile equipment,

I

prams, hygiene items and toys sectors to trade visitors. Last year the show experienced more than 22,000 visitors, which broke all previous records and was home to more than 1,200 exhibitors from around 50 countries. With the addition of the new hall, it is expected that this will be beaten this year. Now with six halls, all full to the brim with new and on-trend product ranges, you really will find it difficult not to find exactly what you are looking for. Independent retailer Andrew Hammond (123ABC UK Ltd) is a regular visitor to K&J and knows the benefits of attending. “The show is quite overwhelming in size, but a great information gatherer for both independents and suppliers to gauge what the trade plan on launching onto the UK high street in the coming year. Where else can you now see almost all the key brands in just a few days.” The new addition of Hall 4.1 will house not only products within the pram sector (including large brand names with whom you will be familiar), but is also the new home for the UK Pavilion, which this year will have more than 70 exhibitors. The UK Pavilion has grown to become a must visit hot spot for many visitors and you will easily find this by the Union Jacks that are clearly visible on the approach to this section of the hall. As this year represents Nursery Today’s 20th anniversary, we are co-sponsoring the drinks networking event at the close of the show on Thursday 14th September. Pop along and come raise a glass with us! Of course, Kind Und Jugend is also home to the coveted Innovation Awards are you ready to find out who the winners of these awards are this year? Visit hall 10.2 at 10am on the opening day of the show to find out! You’ll find the Nursery Today team (as we are part of the judging process) in attendance, so do stop and say hello! One range, all teething Hall 4.1, Stand: B049 stages covered Teething can be tough, very tough. The British brand, Gummee Ltd has spent the last five years designing and developing innovative products to help babies through this painful time. rom a child’s first sore gum, until their back molars have broken through, all stages of teething are covered by Gummee’s high-quality, great value teethers.

F

STAGE 1 - 0-3 months: Gummee Mitts The Gummee Mitts are mini cotton gloves, covered in raised silicone dots that gently massage young gums. These are anti-scratch mitts that actually stay on! The mitts come as a pair and include a hook-and-loop closure that can be adjusted to fit tiny wrists. The mitts are currently available in two colours - baby pink and baby blue. The Gummee Mitts are popular as Baby Shower gifts and for use in hospitals; on maternity wards and in NICU.

STAGE 2 - 3-6 months: Gummee Glove

New for 2017 is the Gummee Glove Plus. The larger version of the original Gummee Glove will be launched at the Kind Und Jugend Show.

The Gummee Glove is the company’s flagship product. The original was launched back in 2012, the world’s first commercially-available teething mitten for babies to wear. Since then, around 196,000 Gummee Gloves have been sold worldwide. The mitten is designed to help babies who start teething early, before they have the fine motor skills required to hold teething toys.

The Gummee Glove includes: * A padded cotton mitten to soak up dribble and drool * An adjustable wrist closure. This allows the Glove to be securely attached to a baby’s wrist, no more dropping toys on the floor! * Two food-grade silicone side teethers * A laundry bag that doubles up as a travel pouch to keep the Glove clean when out and about. * A crinkle patch to stimulate the baby and teach cause and effect. * A detachable, silicone teething ring that can be used with the Glove or on its own once a baby’s fine motor skills have developed. This extends the use of the product beyond the life of the Glove. Basically, a Gummee Glove is two teething products for the price of one!

STAGE 3 - 3 months+: Link n Teethe Link n Teethe is a colourful set of silicone links and shapes, a very versatile teething toy for parents whose children’s teeth are coming through. The links can be attached to

58

nursery today

pushchairs, car seats, supermarket trollies etc. The three silicone links are strong but flexible, they have been designed to give babies a similar sensation to chewing on a finger. The links come with three silicone shapes. The star, butterfly and mini gummee glove teethers also fit in the top of the Gummee Glove and Gummee Glove Plus mittens.

STAGE 4 - 6 months+: Gummee Glove Plus New for 2017 is the Gummee Glove Plus. The larger version of the original Gummee Glove will be launched at the Kind Und Jugend Show. The release of a Glove for older babies is as a result of numerous requests from customers. Many babies have grown up with the Gummee Glove and want to carry on using a mitten to chew on when they are teething. The Gummee Glove Plus includes all the same great features of the original Gummee Glove. The side teethers have been made of thicker, more substantial silicone to give the older babies something they can really chew hard on. The Gummee Glove Plus should fit most children until they are 12 months old.

STAGE 5 - 12 months+: Molar Mallet The Molar Mallet is an innovative teething toy that is designed to reach the back gums safely.

The Molar Mallet includes: • A teether specifically designed to help little ones cope with the irritation caused by the eruption of molars • The teether can be used to apply teething gels to the painful area of the gums. • A safety shield to prevent over-insertion into the mouth • A weighted wobble base. supplier snapshot This issue we’re talking Kind Und Jugend. We speak to some of the industry’s finest to find out their thoughts on this growing International exhibition.

Andy Crane MANAGING DIRECTOR BABYSTYLE

Why is Kind Und Jugend important to you as an exhibitor? Cologne has grown to become a very important fixture on the BabyStyle calendar, it is a wonderful opportunity for the team to exhibit on a truly international platform. BabyStyle thoroughly embrace the whole Cologne experience and particularly enjoying flying the flag whilst gaining additional export market outlets. It is always such a pleasure to see a great turnout of British retailers making the journey to Cologne. Do you use this as a product launch platform? Kind und Jugend provides the perfect backdrop for BabyStyle to test the water with our valued retailers and receive their all-important feedback before we finalise any prototypes prior to production. What can visitors expect to find on your stand this year? This year we actually have two stands at the show. One will be dedicated solely for egg where visitors will be able to see the compact new Quail and also some new exclusive first reveal additions to the egg collection. The Oyster stand will be where visitors can see the Atom, the Twin Oyster Lite, the Oyster2 with a stunning new rose gold chassis while also getting a chance to pass their opinions upon viewing a preview of the Oyster3 and the new compact Hybrid Metro. Are you running any show only offers? We are not planning any specific Cologne show offers this year as we tend to save all our amazing deals for Harrogate, but it’s always worth asking!

Jodine Boothby MANAGING DIRECTOR, GUMMEE LTD

Why is Kind Und Jugend d important to you as an exhibitor? Kind Und Jugend is the most important international trade show for the Gummee team. It is the best place to showcase our teething range, meet potential new distributors, have face-to-face meetings with our existing distributors and guage what is happening in the nursery industry as a whole. Do you use this as a product launch platform? We have always used the Show as a platform for launching our new products - this year we are launching the Gummee Glove Plus at the show - a larger version of our Gummee Glove for children six months+. What can visitors expect to find on your stand this year? This will be our fourth time at the Show. Our teething range and business have grown substantially in that time and our stand will reflect that. Visitors to the Gummee stand will be able to see our whole range of teething products, from our Gummee Mitts for newborn babies right through to our Molar Mallet for when the painful back teeth start to come through. We’ve got all stages of teething covered! Are you running any show only offers? UK Stockists will be able to take advantage of a Show Offer on our Stockist Starter Pack.

Eric White

MANAGING DIRECTOR, EAST COAST NURSERY LTD Why is Kind Und Jugend important to you as an exhibitor? We are seeking global distributors to export our range outside of the UK. The show gives us the opportunity to introduce our products to international buyers and distributors, as well as being a chance to connect with many of our customers as the show is well-attended by UK buyers. Do you use this as a product launch platform? Kind Und Jugend is a good platform for us to introduce some new pieces, so we will be showing two new additions to our furniture collection at the show, along with the previously-shown Coast range which is now in stock.

What can visitors expect to find on your stand this year? East Coast furniture always forms the centrepiece of our stand, complemented by our mattresses and Silvercloud bedding. There will be pieces from all of our product categories, to give a good overview of our offering, including the “Say Hello” toy collection which has expanded with four new products this year. Are you running any show only offers? We have promotions on a selection of our range, including furniture, dining and bedding. We invite you to visit the stand for more details.

Interview:

CHICCO

Hall 10.2, Stand: B019/A010

Discover the Chicco Key to Success This issue we had the pleasure to question Chicco’s Managing Director Mitch Levene to find out what you can expect when you visit their stand at Kind Und Jugend and how they have continued to show growth over the course of the last five years. Firstly, tell us a little about what visitors can expect from the Chicco/ Artsana stand this year at K&J?

The Chicco stand will show case our breadth of product choice, offering practical, stress free solutions for baby and parents needs. This includes sleep time, day time, relax time, playtime and out and about. The diaries for all eight Artsana employees are virtually fully booked, so we are expecting to have a very productive K&J with all our key retailers. Why is this show important to you?

Kind Und Jugend is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate our continued success. Having doubled the business during the past few years and with

another phenomenal year drawingg to a close, there’s no better platform m to showcase our brand new innovation for 2018. The show is crucial for engaging with our key retailers and allows us to strengthen relationships that will ensure long-term growth. How many new products will you be launching this year?

While we have an array of newness, our key innovation has been around developing a new solution that can meet parents’ and babies’ needs around the home all in one smart product: introducing Baby Hug 4-in-1. Having already enjoyed

Five ye ar s of cont inu ous sa les gro w th can be attributed to a ho st of ca re fully cons idere d integ ra te d m arket in g an d sa les str ateg ies . brilliant success in the sleep time sector with the award winning Chicco Next2Me side-sleeping crib, Baby Hug 4-in-1 will supplement this by providing a unique and complete indoor solution that allows parents to enjoy precious moments with their little ones conveniently during their busy routines around their home. We have carried out research throughout the UK in order to determine exactly what new and expectant parents require at various points throughout the day. A fully integrated marketing strategy has also

been scheduled to accompany b tthis fantastic launch. Alongside Baby Hug 4-in-1, w we will also be introducing new in innovations in the travel and m mobility sector, as well as fresh up updates to some of our muchlo loved existing products. You have continued to show Yo gro growth as a brand year on year how have you achieved this?

Five years of continuous sales Fiv gro growth can be attributed to a host of carefully c considered integrated mar marketing and sales strategies. We have made considerable investments in both b television and digital adve advertising that play a vital role in targ targeting our key consumer target aud audiences. We have also developed high impact in-store displays in crucial retailers such as John Lewis, cru Babies B b R Us, leading nursery independents and Mothercare that showcase hero products such as our bestselling ‘sleep time family’. Our high-profile presence at the Baby Show throughout the year is also vital in helping us target expectant mums and gain their brand loyalty right from the start of their parenting journey. This year in particular we have also become the official highchair partners to Annabel Karmel’s new book, Baby Led Weaning. Our Chicco Polly Progres5 5-in-1 highchair features on the book’s front cover, and we have carried out continued activity with the brand to support the book’s launch, including competitions and advertorials in key parenting titles as well as frequent social media activity and in-store events. Securing relationships of this nature is testament to Chicco’s growing success

and rising brand awareness in the UK.

Parent Awards. What benefits do these accolades bring you?

With the launch of your TV campaign for Next2Me, what impact has this had on brand recognition for you?

We pride ourselves on our ongoing success at awards such as Mother & Baby and Loved By Parents, as they show recognition of our new innovation launches, for which we work so hard to ensure they meet the needs of today’s parents. Receiving these kinds of awards gives parents reassurance that they can trust Chicco as a high-quality, credible brand that is held in very high esteem by other parents across the country.

The continued Chicco Next2Me TV campaign has proved phenomenally successful for us. As the only sidesleeping crib to be advertised on prime time TV, we have been able to position ourselves as the household name for side-sleeping solutions and beyond, pioneering the way in this sector and for the nursery market. The campaign has been so successful that we hope to introduce our new innovation to UK television screens during 2018. Do you have a particular product category that is performing exceptionally well for you at present?

As experts in the field, our sleep time family continues to perform brilliantly. This includes the award winning Chicco Next2Me and the new Chicco Next2Me Dream side-sleeping crib, along with our First Dreams sleep time nightlights, including our Next2Stars nightlight, as well as the Baby Bear soft bedtime toy to soothe babies as they drift off to sleep. We’re also enjoying great success in the highchair category, with our 0m+ highchair family, including Polly Progres5, Polly Magic and Polly2Start, all remaining hugely popular for parents who are looking for costeffective and fun feeding solutions that are suitable from birth. Pocket Snack, our booster seat for children from six months up to approximately three years, is seeing continued success for its easy-to-use, highly manoeuvrable and fun nature. It’s clearly the number one selling booster seat in the market. Also very popular is our carrier innovation, which includes our Easy Fit, which provides comprehensive carrier solutions for babies right from birth. We will sustain this success with a further introduction to the carrier family, which will also be unveiled at Kind Und Jugend. Chicco has become very much an award-winning brand - for example your recent success at the Loved By

How many awards has Chicco won during the course of the last 12 months?

Chicco has won a staggering 18 awards in the last 12 months. Chicco Next2Me alone has picked up seven of these, but it hasn’t just been the sleep time sector that we have excelled in; we’ve received accolades for our pushchairs, highchairs, carriers and toys items too. What would you say are the main criteria for new products launched by yourselves?

Research into meeting the precise needs of both parents and babies in all areas of nursery care is vital when it comes to launching new products. We’re very much aware of the changing needs of parents throughout the day in ensuring their baby is both safe and content, and it is through our extensive research that we have been able to pinpoint the ideal solution. With Chicco, wherever there’s a baby, we’ll be there to support parents’ and babies’ needs. How do you convey this to the consumer? What social media platforms do you currently utilise?

We currently utilise YouTube, where we showcase our product videos, and provide step-by-step guides to assembling Chicco items. We also have a very active and engaged Facebook following of more than 1.5 million, which we use to hold regular competitions as well as sharing handy tips and parenting tales.

4-in-1, a multi-functional product that provides four different options in one, for times when babies are napping, eating, playing and relaxing. Utilising our expertise in the sleep, feeding and play time sectors, Baby Hug 4-in-1 is the perfect, and only comprehensive solution that adapts to changing parental & baby needs throughout the day and night, always putting comfort, security and peace-of-mind first.

We undertake sponsored events on retailer websites, such as our sleep time event with Mothercare and meal time event with Annabel Karmel. We frequently appear on the Annabel Karmel website and social media platforms, including Instagram, as their official highchair partner.

Do you feel that nursery products currently have sufficient new innovation?

There’s always work to be done to ensure that the nursery industry keeps up with the evolving needs of today’s parents, which is why we constantly utilise findings from our Group’s Italianbased research centre, Osservatorio Chicco. We are currently nourishing the market with our new innovation that meets various needs of parents and children throughout their daily routines. Looking to the future - are there any exciting plans on the horizon you would like to share with our readers?

n typical so called summer fashion, most shops are reporting a lull in sales. I am sat in Brewers fayre, contemplating how long summer holidays are, and how hard it is to work, running your own business and managing a family at the same time when schools give kids eight weeks off to destroy the house and be bored – surely it can’t be positive for the learning experience, though I do miss my near five month university holidays! I have had to rewrite my article after an issue came to light on the NSG, which members asked me to act on. I felt that warranted a mention here too. Now as I stated in the post in Nursery Trade – although one particular brand was mentioned, this is not an isolated incident. We had what I would call an indie favourite brand, good quality, pop up on the newsfeed of an NSG member selling for less than Trade cost to us. Quite upsetting and members asked me to act and to speak as their voice which I did. It’s not a witch hunt against brand A or brand B. I say it all the time, do you want to stock brands that customers can pick up at the same time as their toilet roll? It’s that simple a question really. This isn’t aimed at suppliers; this is for my fellow independent retailers. You’ve seen a product in a discounted store or supermarket… points to remember: 1. Brands you stock reflect you as a business 2. Shop and warehouse space is money, can you afford to keep/ stock/display items that are available to the consumer at less than what you pay? 3. What is that product doing for your reputation? If a consumer buys an item from you, that they then see online or in a supermarket for 50-70% off and end up bringing back for a refund or leaving a scathing review online about you, reputation is so hard to build back, and being called a rip off is a kiss of death. Floor space is money and who wants floor space occupied with devalued expensive stock? Suppliers prefer one on one open communication with us, I think a Facebook is too open a forum for discussion for them, and that’s fair enough – also of course they cannot

92

nursery today

discuss individual account information on there, so I get that a lot of them maybe do not use that platform as much as we indies would like! At the same time, we know most of them read the posts, and do nothing. The NSG is a support network, which I was forced recently to revamp. Every ship has rats and we have ours, but it’s harder now for them to operate with a now tighter ship. Suppliers reprimanding their retailers for comments made need to not focus on that retailer, but what prompted that retailer to comment in the first place and why so many other retailers agreed. Please if you are going to go on the word of a rat, get your facts right before you start making calls - which is going to be hard since you don’t have direct access to the group. The NSG is not for suppliers, so please back up and let us operate. Of course, what is not said on the group, is said in private groups – you cannot stop people communicating! This is the gift and curse that is social media. In other news, well not so news, but super exciting. K&J is literally around the corner and more indies than ever before are preparing to go, which I feel is a no brainer for many of us – it’s a huge source of pride for me, bumping into NSG members I know, bumping into those I haven’t met, our meet ups grow year on year. The best thing about it of course is being the first to know what is going on, the first to order new things in and knowing/seeing new things before they end up on social media for the end consumer to share and quiz your team about when you yourself are still at the show and haven’t communicated back with the shop! The biggies will ALL I expect have new things going on, but no one is giving anything way. Looking forward to seeing everyone in the UK pavilion, where I’ve noticed that more than usual our suppliers are attending. It’s great to have lots of our suppliers in one area and for smaller suppliers to be in attendance there – I will try my best to get around everyone, and wish everyone exhibiting good luck. Please if you are on the Trade page, let us know where you will be showing so we can come see you, sometimes if a supplier isn’t on our radar, they can be missed out, everyone is always tight for time so please do make yourself known if you can.

Top products on my radar just now are baskets/pods from Cuddles Collection – also the hoot owl bags are back in stock and selling well, as well as the funky grey sequin baskets, pram sets and footmuffs – so different and appealing. Red Kite showed a unicorn range in Harrogate that just came in this week, they are so on trend just now and a huge hit with wee ones. I love the Cosatto Supa stroller in Sunburst, I think it’s fresh, I loved the

M a mas & Papas Ocarro concept and think it has a real designer feel to it. I always think Cosatto are ahead of times with some of their colourways, maybe this is one of them! I adore the Mamas & Papas Ocarro, as many of you know this is one of my favourite set of wheels on the shop floor, so innovative and functional – the grey twill is a beautiful fabric and the whole range is selling strong. Last but by no means least, the Venicci Gusto which is just gorgeous. Lovely fabrics, the tan is a great compliment – a huge shout out to Peter and his fab team who came and installed my stunning stand recently, we love it, thank you. Finally, a huge shout out to Robert in service at Bébécar, who helped me out with a horrid situation with a customer, who I hounded as she hounded me – I appreciate your support and your attitude, and how you dealt with me knowing I was at the end of my tether and upset. Relationships with suppliers are supposed to be partnerships, and there was something quite real about my chasing Robert, who was chasing the factory over in Portugal. Thank you. See you all in Germany!

Monitoring success When it comes to choosing a monitor, parents seek reassurance that their chosen model is correct for their requirements. aby monitors are very much moving away from analogue, with more sophisticated models being introduced to keep up with an ever changing digital world and through innovation, the monitor sector is keeping up. This is a product category that parents research heavily, which is illustrated in our FanFinders survey, with more than 77% of those surveyed confirming that they researched products prior to purchase. Joanne Grey (Marketing Consultant, Summer Infant) views this as a positive. “Given that monitors are fairly high value and the expectations for use are high, overall it is a category that is more widely researched than others. The good news is that there is a lot of useful information out there to help consumers make their decision and some great reviews from other parents across the internet.” Said Joanne. “Word of mouth also plays a huge part for many parents. If you can get a personal recommendation from a friend who has a good monitor then that provides a short cut to making a decision, as do awards from well recognised baby magazines or parenting portals.” Technology is something that is now expected almost as standard as a feature of a baby monitor. It’s not a case of simply ‘plug and go’. This is a product sector that is steeped in innovation, but with so many varying options out there what is currently driving this sector forward? We asked Kate Cartwright (Marketing Manager, Hardeberg & Co) what consumer trends they are currently noticing. “Parents always want to get their babies into a good sleep routine to encourage good sleeping habits. This coupled with them being able to see and hear their baby ensures that everybody gets enough rest and good quality sleep. “Our new range of baby monitors have moved on a little in style and have a much more contemporary feel in order to fit into the homes of today’s parents; as well as giving them the ultimate peace of mind.” Summer Infant are noticing a higher demand for additional cameras on their monitors. “We are seeing a high demand for additional cameras on our video monitors, so that parents can monitor multiple children in different rooms - this may be down to the gap closing between first and second child for many parents, so they have the need to monitor more than one child but don’t want the hassle of multiple parent units. “Summer Infant has responded to this trend by introducing the Wide View 2.0 Duo which comes with two cameras and then the new Side By Side which is the first monitor to introduce a split screen for simultaneous viewing of 1-4 rooms on the screen at the same time.”

B

Cameras to one side, what other additional features are parents currently seeking? “Parents buying baby monitors these days have high expectations, some of the features that used to be regarded as premium are now expected as standard. For example temperature, sound lights and a night light,” said Joanne. “So, the additional features that parents are now seeking out relate to the picture quality of the video, the ability to zoom in and even pan round the room and better quality night vision.” Like most things, when it comes to choosing a monitor, new parents want to be assured that the choice they are making is the right one for them. Although a baby monitor used to be considered a luxury item, this is certainly no longer the case as these are now viewed as standard on the must have shopping list. How are these assisting though to help calm parent anxiety? We asked Kate for her thoughts. “All parents want their little ones to have good sleeping habits and to have peace of mind while their baby is resting, so that they can get some rest too! Any product that can help or facilitate this is certain to carry a high level of consumer demand.” Said Kate. “To keep mums in the know and to make them aware that baby is sleeping soundly with good quality sleep; an Angelcare monitor is here to help. With our bestselling Sensor Pad, parents seeking reassurance can get it with this product. Our monitors alleviate some of the stress and worry associated with parenting and offers peace of mind. Our brand is an emotional brand as we are proud to be able to empathise with parents on this key issue of sleep.” As monitors are clearly moving with technology buying a monitor is a great category for dads too. As this is a technical ‘gagdet’ dads are far more likely to want to be involved in the decision process and will often offer their technical knowledge. In fact, this type of purchase enables dads to be more actively involved in the preparation for the new arrival. “Baby monitors has always been a category dads have got involved in when it comes to purchasing decisions - whilst it does feel a bit cliched and stereotypical, like it or not - many dadsto-be are more technically minded and interested in the intricate details the monitors have to offer,” Joanne told us. “From our research, we’ve found that on the whole more dads do the “research’ when it comes to choosing their monitor, but then narrow down the options and let mum-to-be make the final choice!” This can definitely be seen within our survey, with nearly 70% of those asked stating

Big wave to digital Summer Infant’s line up of monitors offer something for every customer’s budget, from RRP £39.99 with the Baby Wave Deluxe Audio and Babble Band Wearable Monitor, right up to the new top of the range Side by Side at RRP £230. The sleek range of digital video monitors launched earlier this year from Summer Infant compliment any nursery interior, each of the digital video monitors offers premium features as standard and provides a really easy to use interface with leading edge technology. Summer Infant’s ethos when it comes to baby monitors is about focusing on form, function and value – avoiding gimmicky features that only act to distract consumers and make the monitors more difficult to intuitively navigate. The most recent addition to the range is the Side by Side Video Baby Monitor, the first monitor to introduce split screen, so enables simultaneous viewing of one to four rooms on the screen, it also has the added bonus of pan and tilt to achieve the perfect viewing angle. In 2018, Summer Infant will be introducing even more ground breaking technology to its monitor range – they’ll be showcasing them at Kind & Jugend, so visit them to find out more. No compromise on quality For parents, understanding safe sleep is a trigger for anxiety. Therefore, using a baby monitor is one way to alleviate this. With innovations in technology, the number of features available with monitors is increasing meaning there’s plenty of choice for the consumer to find something that suits their individual preference on monitoring their baby. Some parents are reassured by sound monitoring. Other’s like to see baby on the screen and monitor movements with a patented Angelcare Sensor Pad, alerting them when movement isn’t detected after 20 seconds. Angelcare is the global number one in movement monitors, sold in over 70 countries worldwide and has provided peace of mind to millions of parents. The monitor collection has been awarded an impressive set of consumer and industry awards and offers parents Digital and Analogue monitors with the options of Movement, Video and or Sound monitoring. Both parents and retailers can enjoy the choice offered and price points which suit a variety of budgets but never compromise on quality. 2017 has also seen a number of new monitors launched in the Angelcare range, two of which feature new wireless technology and can monitor movement using a new wireless Sensor Pad, the only one currently available in the market! In addition to the wireless Sensor Pad, Angelcare monitors now come complete with a reporting and tracking feature, allowing parents to better respond to baby’s needs based on their sleep patterns and reactions to temperature and movement. Rest assured Take time to visit Snuza who will be exhibiting at Kind Und Jugend with their innovative range of monitors. nuza will return to K&J this year with their innovative range of monitors for parents including the Snuza Pico – the next generation of baby monitoring allowing parents to monitor abdominal movement, temperature, body position and sleeping patterns from their smart device and the multi gold award winning Snuza HeroMD portable breathing monitor. The Snuza Pico’s introduction of Sleep Analytics via the Snuza app prolongs the use of the monitor beyond infancy which is an industry first. In the first year the Pico acts as a movement monitor which vibrates after 15 seconds of no movement in an effort to rouse baby to resume abdominal movement, followed by a loud alarm if a further five seconds passes with no abdominal movement. As the child grows older the added functionality of sleep analytics becomes the primary reason for use. Through extensive research Snuza discovered that sleep quality and duration is a concern for many parents pertaining to brain and memory development from newborns well into childhood. This is based on scientific studies that prove that there is a definite correlation between sleep quality and duration, and a child’s development over time. The Sleep

Analytics feature of the Snuza Pico helps parents understand their child’s sleep patterns, thereby empowering them to make changes to improve the sleep quality of their children in order to ensure their optimal growth and development. The multi gold award winning baby monitor is a game changer to the Monitor market and is Europe’s first medically certified portable breathing monitor. A wearable device which attaches to baby’s nappy to monitor breathing via abdominal movement, which will alert parents via a loud audible alarm if breathing is weak or less than eight breaths per minute. The advanced technology in the full Snuza family of portable baby monitors combined with extensive experience and market feedback means Snuza is the brand to offer the ultimate in peace of mind and support. h, Cologne…four days of innovation and inspiration as the global industry congregates in a historic German city. I’m excited h about what will be unveiled this year a as a the industry is becoming something of o an arms race with a clearly visible escalation in creativity and e engineering. e Every year I wait for the bubble to burst and the nursery trade to hit the b ceiling c in a postmodern-day dilemma where everything that can be thought every of has clearly clear been thought of and rolled out aand the ideas well runs dry. But ev every year I am truly amazed at how cor core concept products keep getting rei reinvented. Pushchairs step towards tthe thin line that separates them from being something a parent u uses and something that

could easily have a roll-on part in the next Transformers movie. Furniture gets reinvented as highchairs become chairs for life, wardrobes and dressers appear that wouldn’t look out of place in Ideal Home magazine; and car seats can now have wheels and be pushed around like strollers! It excites me; is that a bit sad or do you feel it too? But Kind und Jugend is a biosphere. An intriguing bubble where the real world gets forgotten for a few days as we wash down dubious sausages with, to be fair, decent beer. Back at the home front things are far from exciting, and that really does make me sad. It is hard to miss the feeling in the

air this year. I read posts and comments in the trade groups on Facebook and I often start to type my own two-penneth, but end up deleting it before posting as what good is a limited conversation in a Facebook group? Like Brexit and General Elections, simply posting some comments on social media isn’t actually contributing or doing anything meaningful. Sure, you might feel a bit better having vented your spleen but nothing will change from doing it. Brands and distributors not chipping in when retailers publicly lament the industry does not mean they don’t care. It likely means that the true spokespeople aren’t members of particular social

media groups or that they prefer to discuss matters in a more official environment. Retailers posting about their frustrations isn’t ‘retailers having a whinge’, it’s small business owners finding a voice for the rage and sorrow that they feel right now about the industry they support their lives and families through. It feels like everybody is monitoring everybody but nobody is really talking to anyone. Without real discussion, nothing will change. As someone who stands closer to the side-lines than an actual brand or retailer I can see matters through a slightly wider lens and from where I am standing no-one is to blame about today’s challenges.

But the challenges are there. So, what do we do? I don’t think there is a digital solution to this. It is easy enough to set up online groups and forums and sharing

services between lots of businesses but I just don’t think they work. It needs flesh in the room. It needs people sat with people, not behind keyboards. It needs brands, distributors and retailers sat together. It needs a realistic agenda. You will not get price-fixing legislation to disappear. You will not get Brexit to go away so currency exchange rates and price increases will not be reversed. It needs do-ers not moaners. As a retailer, if you only open your store until 4pm each day and never open on Sunday and rarely use social media or email marketing then don’t expect to be taken seriously when you say trade is slow. Brands, if you sell your products on digital platforms at a cheaper price than you sell to trade then don’t pretend you’re here to help. It needs somebody to put their hand up and say they will arrange and host an exploratory session if enough people are serious about starting meaningful conversations.

So, Ok, I’ll do that. Who wants to come? Email me if you are interested in a discussion meeting taking place sometime soon and I will speak to some folk and we’ll see if this is something that can grow legs. If you are heading over to Cologne then you can also speak to me about it after my presentations in the Trend Forum on the Friday and Saturday, where I will be giving seminars on Content Marketing and Social Media planning.

See what I did there? I made out I was all concerned and benevolent for a little while, but really it was just a cheap ploy to let you know that I am presenting twice at Cologne and I am hoping some of you lovely readers will stop by to make me look knowledgeable, charismatic and popular. But right now, I must say auf weidersehen. I’m off to practice my English so I can speak it as well as the Germans ahead of K&J.

Keeping baby warm and snug after a bath, Little Chick London’s swaddle robe is the perfect garment for a new-born baby’s delicate skin. Made from super soft bamboo towelling which is gentle but quick drying, the soft hooded robe has swaddle wings to wrap baby and a tie belt to help snuggle them dry. GOLF DAY

19th Nursery, Christmas and Party golf day, Puckrup Hall Warm weather ideal for golf greeted us all at the beginning of the nine hole Texas Scramble and happily stayed with us throughout the day. here were some impressive scores, a lot of laughs and the thought that we should encourage more industry golfers to put in teams. The morning nine hole Texas Scramble was won by the Babystyle team of Andy Crane, Matt Stephens, Kim Rollinson and Ross Hewitt on 24.4. Not far behind in second place was the Premier Decorations team of Nick Crispin, Eddy Brady, Scott Pollock and Rolf Hunt on 24.9 and third Smiffy’s team of Simon Smithers, Ross Johnson, Sam Bucknell and Mark Schofield on 25.8. Following a sumptuous lunch of ham, egg and chips we were very much in the mood for the afternoon round. The afternoon yellow-ball prize was again won by Andy Crane’s team, retaining the yellow ball throughout the 18 holes and amassing a points total of 36. The team four-ball is always a closely fought competition and we had a number of very good team scores. The winning team of Smiffys were unable to stay for the dinner and it was therefore decided to award the trophies to the team coming second with just six points less than Smiffys with 133 points. They were the Premier Decorations team of Nick Crispin, Eddy Brady, Scott Pollock and Rolf Hunt. Third were Baby Style’s second team of Stuart Walker, Miles Johnson, David Brown and Kiel Shawley on 129 points. The individual Stableford produced some cracking scores. Leading the way was Eddy Brady with 45 points. As Eddy said “It was just one of those days when everything went right, plus a few pieces of luck and some very steady putting.” Second and also from Premier was Nick Crispin on 42 points and decided on the better back nine where Nick scored 23 points. Coming third also with 42 points was Babystyle’s Kiel Shawley, scoring 22 points on the back nine. Nearest the pin was Ross ‘Big Boy’ Hewitt, Longest drive Nick Crispin and Babystyle’s Kim Rollinson nearest the pin in two on the 8th. Best gross went to Skip Hop’s

Jon Tilley with a 76 - what a great effort! So all in all an excellent day’s golf from the teams of Babystyle and Premier Decorations who virtually cleaned up in the prize stakes. Always close to the prizes I hope that Smiffys will stay for the presentation next year and therefore take home the winners prizes should they win. It was great to see Hippy Chick’s M.D. Jeremy Minchin returning to our golf day and also past winner Miles Johnson who hadn’t played in our competition for some years. Each year we say that it would be great to encourage more teams to put in four-balls so for next year there will be a new cup to be presented to the winning four-ball team which has been inspired by Babystyle’s Andy Crane. To rival the F.A. Cup and Champions League trophies in size, this will be a trophy well worth winning and we anticipate that far more companies will set their sights on winning this fabulous trophy. My thanks to Skip-Hop’s Jon Tilley for marking the cards and also putting up with me for the day. We have for a few years now enjoyed a barbeque rather than a formal dinner and this has been really well received, enabling those with a drive home an earlier time to set off home. We will possibly go with an early June date next year and this will be published very shortly. Finally, my thanks for those supporting the day, there are fewer and fewer industry days where good comradeship and business networking can be enjoyed in such relaxed surroundings, so next year promises to be another great event. retail TECHNOLOGY

Building a ‘Sticky’ Retail Website David looks at how to build a community around an online shop.

remember vividly in my early years wandering down to the local cycle shop to get a new wheel for my bicycle. This particular shop had been selling and repairing bicycles for the best part of 150 years and was based in an old, crumbling Georgian house – the sole survivor in a maze of bypasses and trunk roads, seemingly protected by some sort of space/time bubble. This dusty, cluttered and greasy shop was a place of wonder and mystery for a wide-eyed eight year old. It did seem that whatever you needed for a bicycle, this shop stocked it. The elderly gentleman who ran this business knew how to keep customers. I do remember he seemed to spend more time doing repairs for free than selling bicycles and kept a wicked collection of boiled sweets for those willing to spread the good word about his services. The fact is, traditional ‘bricks and mortar’ retailers like this knew a thing or two about building a community around a business. The non-pushy, friendly and helpful sales techniques employed in past times seem to have disappeared somewhat from many current businesses, especially those

enduring the pressures of trading online. Is there a benefit of reviving community values around an online shop? How would this sort of service-based approach be applied to the pressurised World of online selling?

Old-Fashioned Values, New Technology If you run an eCommerce website for your nursery business you’ll know the pressures of online sales. Distance selling regulations, stock control issues and delivery problems are all stock in trade for the online retailer and whilst many of these issues can be solved by employing a good multichannel EPoS system, it does seem sometimes that the eCommerce part of your business is divorced from the service aspect enjoyed by customers in your ‘bricks and mortar’ store. This doesn’t have to be the case… The fact is, technology is available to allow community to grow and thrive around an eCommerce store and this technology has been around for many years. Welcome to blogs, social media, interactive media and online forums.

Blogging I’ve mentioned the benefits of blogging for your eCommerce business before. A good on-site blog can give your eCommerce website better rankings in search engines, more engagement with customers and a degree of ‘stickiness’ which not only keeps visitors coming back for more

but helps to build search engine rankings over time. If you can spare the time to write a couple of helpful, interesting articles for your blog every week then Google is going to love you, as will your customers.

Social Media We’ve all heard that we need to utilise social media to promote our websites nowadays. Everyone it seems is on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn! The fact is, the real benefit of social media for promoting a website is actually telling people about the good stuff that you do for free, like giving away information which is hard to find. This kind of activity can really help to build community round your eCommerce website and keep people coming back for more.

Interactive Media Interactive media can be anything from videos to online games, however some of the best interactive media resources can be guides. Offering free information can really keep people coming back to your website, helping to build community and ‘stickiness’. Of course, resources like this are also great for search engine rankings as people are much more likely to link to these resources than a product page within your eCommerce website.

Forums Online forums have actually been around for many decades, being developed from the original bulletin board type discussion platforms. The idea of a forum is to allow discussion on a particular topic or topics. This makes an online forum perfect for creating community around a retail eCommerce website. Forums are used heavily by many technology companies, especially those offering software and services however with a bit of thought and man-power can be used for any retail website effectively. The major benefit of an online forum based around your eCommerce website would be that you can answer questions, put objections to rest and create a strong community with returning customers. An online forum can be provided for ‘logged in’ clients only, ensuring you are engaging with paying customers only and avoiding spam. Time spent replying to customer enquiries should be seen as a selling opportunity and in fact this is a very neat way to get around the normal eCommerce conundrum of not being able to interact with customers. It seems you can return to old-fashioned community values whilst trading in the 21st Century, which has to be good for everyone!

The event anticipated by the whole business-sector! KIDS’ TIME 2018 - this February in Poland K KIDS’ TIME is one of Central & Eastern Europe’s greatest events in the E ch child-care products and services business sector; the Expo is also bu re regarded one of the world’s most prominent business events of its kind. p Every consecutive expo proves its E co considerable and always increasing significance; KIDS’ TIME is ranked si am among global leaders. together producers and distributors of prams and push-chairs, car seats, toys and other child-care products and services. Companies which offer textiles and clothing have also marked their presence here. Most of exhibitors sign lucrative, international contracts at the Kielce expo. “Products and services on offer at this year’s expo, as well as the expo stands quality and the organisational aspect, demonstrate the highest possible standards. The expo preparation phase was not easy for us, it required the company’s efforts and commitment. Now we are satisfied with the results. We have showed our company in the best of lights and this strategy paid off. We are particularly pleased with that fact that a great number of foreign visitors called in our expo stand. We hosted industryinsiders from southern and western Europe,” said Mr. ukasz Kot - a textile manufacturer after last year’s exhibition finished.

Expos and science KIDS’ TIME is much more than a trade-show - its programme comprises a number of substantive meetings. Following many-year tradition, the upcoming exhibition will include workshops hosted by international specialists. These are crafted around producers’, distributors’ and retailers’ needs. This year’s KIDS’ TIME boasted a special guest - Reyne Rice, one of the world’s most acclaimed specialists and researchers in toy market’s trends. The American speaker cast light on development directions in childproducts business sector. The expo agenda also included a meeting which gave an insight into toy market’s latest research. The Baby Products Association’s UK Pavilion at Kind und Jugend in Cologne, Germany in September is the biggest on record with 73 British companies participating in the 2017 show. This year not only sees more new companies joining the UK Pavilion but also previous participants securing larger stands such as BabyStyle which has two areas representing its Egg and Oyster brands equating to over 150 square metres. Adrian Sneyd, UK Pavilion organiser, said: “Baby Products Association members will certainly make an enormous impact this year with a bigger UK Pavilion than ever before. The British branding always brings buyers into the area en-masse and this year the British team has more quality products to present than ever before.” w The UK Pavilion, which has moved into a new Hall 4.1 of Kölnmesse exhibition centre, has been renowned for its patriotism over the years with the Union Jack flying proudly throughout the Pavilion area. Once again, there will be free Union Jack cotton bags, sponsored by BabyStyle, which have historically brought visitors in by their hordes hoping to secure a coveted bag or two for themselves and colleagues – and can been seen dotted around not only Kölnmesse but the streets of Cologne too. Once again, the trade association has produced its own dedicated UK Pavilion Directory with details of all companies participating. A digital copy of this publication is available to download from the website at www.thebpa. eu Robert Anslow, managing director of the Baby Products Association is also president of the European Nursery Products confederation (ENPC) which has been asked to organise a presentation in the Kind und Jugend Trend Forum. This year the speaker is Sara Ludlam of law firm 3Volution who is an expert on intellectual property and will explain the ins and outs of patents, copyright, trademarks and registered designs and how to avoid costly mistakes which can cause your products to be copied. This talk is not to be missed and takes place at 2pm on Thursday 14th September. Finally, if you intend to visit Kind und Jugend, the Baby Products Association has organised discounted

tickets tickets. When purchasing online enter the codes: BPAatKJ17 for a Day ticket reduced to 7 euros; or BPAatKJ173 Season ticket reduced to 16 euros. The Baby Products Association’s team will be on hand for the duration of the show in Hall 4.1 Stand B045, so please feel free to come and ask any questions you have about membership of your trade association, information about safety standards and details about Department of International Trade support for international events.

Networking event The Networking Event which takes place at close of business straight after the show on Thursday 14th September will be more of a celebration than usual as this year it is jointly sponsored by Nursery Today magazine and Allport Cargo Services. Allport is the trade association’s recommended freight company and has sponsored this event for a number of years; while Nursery Today celebrates its 20th anniversary. Both companies invite everyone in the UK Pavilion and all UK exhibitors and visitors to join them in the UK Pavilion for a drink and nibbles.
