Understanding the market Product Launcher spoke to Samuel Johnston Baby’s Marketing Manager, Donna McCullough, to talk about why New Products and Innovation are important to them as a nursery retailer. Why are new products that launch important to your business? We want our business to stand out and appeal to parents from all demographics. So, hosting a wide range of evolving brands is vital. Products that are innovative, problem solving, or offer something new, are particularly attractive. And sometimes it is just refreshing to find a brand that simply looks great! The industry changes all the time. It is important that we keep up. What do you look for when brands launch new products? We are looking for products that stand out. Something that makes us sit up and notice. I suppose it is that gut 6 product launcher
feeling, isn’t it? You are trailing around the trade show, tired and jaded, and then, suddenly, there it is! A wonderful product that is stylish and great quality. Design and aesthetic are also important, and products must be functional Sustainability is also a key consideration. And we are a family business, so we like to work with other family businesses who employee local people and support local companies. Also, we love products that have a good brand story and strong creative assets. In a digital world this is so vital for our social activity, our advertising and how the product is portrayed on our site.
How often are you searching for new products? Trade shows were always very important to us. With the pandemic we have had to re-think how we find new opportunities. But we are looking all the time. We have a large warehouse, and we are keen to fill it! There’s Linkedin, email alerts, online research and of course, Product Launcher, a fab idea from the team at Nursery Today! But we also find that phoning around our suppliers and keeping our ears open does work too. So, communication is key. We have good relationships with brands, and they are keen to introduce us to new new ranges.
Do you feel that there are sufficient new product launches each year within each product category? I think the likes of car seat manufacturers are constantly evolving their product, probably because they have invested so much in their Research and Development sites. And there is always something new on the buggy/stroller front. But over the last few years there has been so many baby side cribs! It would be nice to see more from the toy sector, perhaps more traditions toys and outdoor activity products. And more sustainable ‘Eco’ ranges are always welcome.
Do you think as an industry we have sufficient innovation? The nursery industry has a traditional feel about it and success often depends on shows such as Harrogate, face to face meetings, networking, socialising etc. With regard to product, it would be great to see more innovation in sustainable parenting products. From a Samuel Johnston Baby point of view, we have had be extremely innovative over the last year, ensuring that we grow our online trade and provide good service to customers. With shop doors shut, and nowhere for customers to get advice, we have created Car Seat and Pram Buying Guides on our site.
Are you interested in looking at new products that may be from a fledgling company? Yes of course! But it is important that small companies invest in their brand’s creative assets. Every brand needs to tell a story so it is vital to create a good logo; great product and lifestyle photography; video assets, a brand story and lovely packaging.
In which category have you seen the highest level of innovation? Car seats for sure! They keep getting better all the time. Cybex is a great brand. There are still issues around incorrect fitting, but QR codes help here. I am impressed with the Groowy from JANE and still love their Matrix, the only lie-flat car seat carrycot.
Over the years have you experienced a new product which launched to become a must have by your customers? We have seen a great uptake in all terrain prams such as Out n’ About and the JANE Trider, as more people seem keen to get off the beaten track. Our customers also love anything new from iCandy and the traditional brand, Silver Cross. What benefits do you derive by showcasing new products either online or on you showroom floor? Showcasing products brings traffic. The sale may not come immediately but if a customer is presented with something that looks amazing, they will want to find out more. ‘Showcasing’ helped the success of Scandi brand Noordi. But here’s to Harrogate when the real fun begins!

Is this a trick question? No one wants to see the same thing over and over, everything has to evolve. Regulations change regularly, styles, fashions, new technology - new product and innovation is vital for us to also be constantly updating and keeping to the forefront.
What benefits do new products bring to retailers shop floors or websites?
New products enable us to ensure we continue to refresh, innovate and appeal to new people. We have to move with the times to attract a constantly changing customer base.
Do you feel that new products reflect current consumer trends and buying habits?
Covid has put such a spanner in the works across the board. At the moment nothing reflects lockdown...customers need to get back into shops! Right now they are seeing what we are presenting to them on social media and websites. I think people are incredibly confused, you’ve got customers asking for comparisons between £200 budget travel systems and a £2000 designer one - they both do the same thing and continually ask what is 12 product launcher
the difference. The difference is visible ... but we need to be able to place the product in front of them!
When it comes to new products, how important is style, function and value?
All three are important. However, money is usually is the biggest factor, but customers are looking at all three aspects, as are we retailers. You don’t want something like looks nice but, for example, has batch after batch with quality issues.
Is there a new product that has previously been launched that is now a must have with consumers?
- again it’s got to be down to research, it’s not a brand new product and we’ve experienced that people know the product as soon as they see it.

This lockdown has seen consumers researching hugely online. I’ve seen a lot of comparison between baby nests/sleep supports, a big push in sales in the Purflo sleep range - given the quality and the information behind the product it’s become a must have. Also the Snuzcloud
Do you feel we have sufficient innovation with regard to new product launches?
Yes! Car Seats. Maxi Cosi, for example, have just been so busy the past few years, the release of the 360 family sees fantastic innovation, and the new Coral is an improved version on an already fairly new product. At the moment nothing is sufficient though and we’ve had to make the most of what we have. Hopefully we can resume some degree of normality so we can begin to see what our suppliers have up their sleeves next.
What impact does social media have on new products to gain consumer awareness?
It’s huge. Consumers follow brands, retailers and people of ‘interest’ - and it’s interesting to see how each of these categories impact awareness. I do think

that suppliers need to focus a bit more on their supply chain, instead of cutting us retailers out on their SM and dealing directly with the so called ‘influencers’.
What type of advice do you offer NSG members who are seeking that something different to offer to their customers?
What you like won’t automatically mean sales. Know your customer base. You need to know what they want, what pulls them in - don’t try to cover every category. Pick one category and do yours differently. Plenty of suppliers will do individual collabs with stores - it’s about
right right collaboration. Social media is your best friend NSG fam. If you have your different product, focus on that, sing about it from the rooftops to your customer base.
Are NSG members actively asking about or discussing new product launches?
Always. We are always looking for new things and want to know what our supply chain is bringing in. There are also quite a few NSG members launching their own products directly to their customer base which is a reflection of our entrepreneurial spirit.

I think now more than ever we need to be showing new and exciting things. People are looking for something different and want to stand out. I think in general our whole society want to have the latest models and upgrades, hence we need to keep providing these.
What benefits are there for retailers who showcase new products either on their website or via their shop floors? As retailers have really suffered so much with very little in-store time over the last year, they are wanting fresh new things for them as well as their customers. They need that fresh new start, the feeling of new beginnings and with brands providing new and interesting products, new colours and innovations that will make them excited to sell again.
Grey is the staple in most ranges. However lots of our suppliers are going bold! We are seeing more European style colours coming into our ranges. Have you seen the new Mamas & Papas Ocarro in Calico? Wow. It’s so light...for me it’s a select customer that will buy it, but it will sell and it’s great to offer something that isn’t just a shade of grey. Cosatto do Cosatto grey- but the colours and prints coming out of their base camp is real old skool! My customers at Babyland certainly love it. I am loving the personality coming out just now, it means that we are reopening with a bit of colour splashed all over the shop floor!
Product Launcher asked a number of Nursery Brands for their thoughts on the importance of new product launches within our industry.

There are always progressions to be made across all categories of the nursery sector. In the travel category particularly, new products are created to answer the ever-changing safety standards for car seats. This is something that we pride ourselves in at Maxi-Cosi, as we lead the way in innovation with products such as Jade and Coral. Each of these have revolutionised infant travel and ease of use for parents. In a day and age when convenience is king, pushchairs need to be able to adapt with the ever-changing lifestyle of the consumer. So, our ranges need to provide a more luxurious pushchair which is perfect for rural lifestyles, a compact fold that is easy to manoeuvre around the city and an option that holds-all for those in suburban areas.
What benefits are there for retailers who showcase new products either on their website or via their shop floors? Modern parents thrive on innovation and like to feel well informed about a purchase. They take the time to research the latest products and expect all good nursery retailers to have them in stock. In this respect, retailers who showcase their product ranges, and provide additional information and support, are attractive to the consumer. There are lines that will remain bestsellers, particularly when it comes to car seats, as safety is an area where a trusted heritage brand will prevail. However, the innovations that come with new products drive purchases too. In 2021, we have a culture that thrives on newness and new technology, our industry is no exception. product launcher 13

Image courtesy Babymore The wheeled goods category is one which continues to show innovation and keep pace with current consumer trends - whether it be the style of chassis, fabric colourways, size or weight. The demand within this sector for new products doesn’t appear to be decreasing and although some may feel there might be too much choice, there is clearly a place for each brand or new entrant represented. With trends continually changing and parents seeking something that they are not only proud to push, many are also looking for additional functions, for example, how the product folds, the weight, travel systems that have adaptability with infant carriers (of a different brand) enabling a ‘mix and match’ approach, lie flat capability, rearward or forward-facing seating options - all of which must also reflect a level of style. Brands are definitely keeping up to speed and enhance their ranges to reflect this. When we look at trends Leclerc’s UK & Ireland Sales Manager, Gabriella Amodeo feels the compact stroller category is excelling and told Product Launcher “There has recently been a great surge in the compact stroller category. We have seen new compact strollers from established brands as well as new-comers. Initially, they launched as an easy alternative when travelling, or as an option for a second stroller once the baby had grown out of the pram, however they are fast becoming

the first and only choice for new parents who are after a practical and easy solution.” However, due to the current pandemic, she also feels that this category might be experiencing a temporary slow in growth. “The worldwide pandemic and effect on travel has certainly slowed the demand, however with light at the end of the tunnel and with travel soon on the cards, we expect the sales to rapidly pick up and this category to grow exponentially. Compact and lightweight strollers are definitely not a temporary trend, certainly not just for travelling. They are here to stay.” Product Launcher also spoke to Joie’s Head of Product Development, Damon Marriott, with regard to current consumer trends. “As with any big purchase, the cost and the value for money will always be a key consideration for the consumer. However, the savvy shopper will also want to know about new features that make the pushchair easier to use and suitable for their needs and way of life.” He said. Taking a look to the future with eco-credentials in mind, Damon stated: “Increasingly we are seeing an interest in the sustainability of the materials used in the product as well as the packaging so this is also playing a role in consumers buying decisions.” When we consider new products within this category, do they offer good innovation? Dorel’s UK and Ireland’s
Marketing Manager would say yes, especially when we look at lifestyle choices during lockdown! Debbie told Product Launcher: “We are continually seeing innovation within the categories and that is exciting. Not only are we now seeing the introduction of tech involvement there has also been a huge development in the all-terrain and running pushchairs, to answer the current lifestyle changes during lockdown.” That being said, Bebecar’s UK Commercial Director, Kevin Golding does issue a slight word of warning stating: “Product development and improvement is an ongoing process, but occasionally things can get over-engineered with added bells and whistles just for the sake of it.” One area of certain growth we have experienced is the success retailers are enjoying by offering bundles within this category, however, what other retailer benefits are there by stocking new products that fall within Wheeled Goods? We asked Gabriella for her thoughts. “Retailers will benefit from being perceived as a leader in the market who vows to offer products that cater for all types of consumers and demands. As a new brand to the UK Market, retailers will benefit from a strong instore and online presence with demo video and images showcasing the product in the best way possible. We have invested in displays, holograms and bespoke marketing strategies that will support the retailers.”

Interview: Why are new product launches important to our industry sector? I think now more than ever we need to be showing new and exciting things. People are looking for something different and want to stand out. I think in general our whole society want to have the latest models and upgrades, hence we need to keep providing these. What benefits are there for retailers who showcase new products either on their website or via their shop floors? As retailers have really suffered so much with very little in-store time over the last year, they are wanting fresh new things for them as well as their customers. 5 Point Plus Anti-Escape Celebrates 10 Years It is estimated that more than 70% of toddlers wriggle their shoulders out of the car seat straps, rendering the child car seat useless in a collision. The issue with child car seats is that, even with a correctly fitted harness, a toddler can easily push their arms under the straps. Up until now parents had to wait until their child

Certainly there is a significant increase in the level of interest in Nursery Décor. How you kit your nursery out has become a subject of great interaction on Instagram and similar platforms. Classic All-White or Natural Wood options are proving their popularity as people are more inclined to play around with interior trends on walls/ soft furnishings and accessories.
Are consumers considering price vs. function on nursery furniture? Increasingly, we see consumers looking for pieces that will last the test of time. They are willing to pay a small premium for an item that has added functionality but price is still a major consideration.
How important are new products for retailers within this category? Innovation and newness are key to capturing the interest of your audience. Once you engage with your customer at any level, the chances of converting that sale is far greater.
What benefits can retailers expect by stocking new products in this category?
Increasingly, we see a willingness amongst consumers to shop and support their local retailers. By having something new to show them, you are giving them a reason to shop with you. Offering a range of price and functional options across the category gives the reassurance and confidence the customer needs to shop local.
We are seeing a strong move into more contemporary designs which bring clean lines and natural materials to the fore. This can be seen in the mid-century styling and natural birch wood on our new Torsten and Lukas ranges from Troll Nursery. We find that the two-tone colourways such as our bestselling Clara White & Ash are outselling ranges which are just white, so we are launching the Troll ranges in White & Natural and Grey & Natural. How important are new products within this category? Newness is always key to drive awareness of brands in retailers - everyone wants to know what’s new. We launched a trade catalogue to showcase the huge range of items we offer across all our brands. Although nursery trends do not move as quickly as the rest of the home, customers want to see nursery items which suit their personal style so brands need to keep current. What benefits can retailers expect by stocking new products in this category? New products in the latest colours and styles will draw people to a store (online or bricks & mortar) and they will ‘shop the look’ with add on home décor items such as our stylish animal heads from Childhome. On a more serious note as safety standards are updated the newest items will meet the newest standards which some customers might be searching for; cribs and bedside sleepers as an example.

Encouraging product innovation The Baby Products Association, the UK’s trade organisation supporting manufacturers and suppliers of baby goods and promoting safety in the UK, has announced that its 2021 Concept & Innovation Awards are now open for entry. The awards have provided the spring board for numerous innovative new baby products over the years including the revolutionary Doona car seat with integrated wheels; the 5 Point Plus safety harness which stops a child escaping from car seat belts; Sandsliders – a simple device that allows pushchairs to be pulled across a beach or gravel; the Rockit portable stroller rocker; and the 2019 winner CotCool – a safe air conditioning unit that attaches to the cot side to regulate the temperature within. This is expected to arrive in shops in summer 2021. Robert Anslow, managing director of the Baby Products Association explains: “Innovation and product safety are one of the prime missions for the association and over the years we have been presented with some extremely interesting and innovative ideas. Some of these turn out to be too ambitious in terms of manufacturing costs and realistic retail prices and there are always concerns about how some of the designs will be able to comply with rigorous testing and safety standards. 50 product launcher
“The Baby Products Association judges are a team of experts with many years combined experience in all aspects of baby products from design and manufacture, to safety and compliance to retail and marketing. They have been able to advise and guide entrepreneurs and help and support them in their journey to market. Sadly there have also been disappointments along the way, with some who have invested thousands of pounds in trying to launch a product idea, which the judges simply don’t see as being viable.” The Concept & Innovation Awards have always been presented and announced at the UK’s only baby trade show, Harrogate International Nursery Fair each year, but had to be postponed because of the Covid pandemic in 2020. With the announcement from the government that Covid restrictions will be lifted for events from 21st June 2021, the show is now planned to go ahead from 27th to 29th June 2021 once again providing the platform for the awards. Entries are invited from anyone with
an interesting and unique baby product idea – this could be from companies already working in the sector, mumpreneurs (or dadpreneurs!), to college and university students – the only criteria is that the product must not be launched into the market place prior to the trade show in June. Julie Milne, membership and technical manager for the Association, explains: “The product ideas submitted can be anything from just a simple idea which has just been drawn out with explanations about how the product will perform; to products which have already reached the prototype stage and are much further along in their journey.” More information and entry forms are available to download from the website at www.b-p-a.org – the deadline to submit entries is 5.00pm on 23rd April 2021. We are all driven by what’s new, when gifting people often look for new as a play safe way of not getting a duplicate gift or there is an assumption that new is better. In retail a high percentage of sales are impulse sales, so the more eye-catching your displays makes it more likely are that people will stop and take a look or browse your website. Of course anything that a retailer has not stocked before is new to them, so it’s always a good idea to look at their suppliers whole portfolio.

New product launches are an integral part of our business and we pride ourselves on bringing the latest innovations, newness and fashion collections to our retailers and their customers. We are operating in a busy industry sector and a successful NPD strategy means nursery brands can maintain their competitive edge and truly capture the attention of consumers. Whether it’s the latest car seat designed to enhance child safety or a new fashion collection collaboration, new product launches provide an opportunity to introduce the latest in design, technology and new trends. R & D teams are tasked with developing new concepts to ensure the highest levels of safety in car seat and pushchair design without compromising on style, and this is an important part of our NDP programme.
What benefits are there for retailers who showcase new products either on their website or via their shop floors? Throughout lockdown retailers have had to rely more on their websites and social channels to showcase new products in the nursery sector. This has been achieved successfully through product launch videos and live demos for consumers. However, for me nothing beats an in-store event to showcase the launch of a new product. Supporting retailers with new product displays and in-store POS is an opportunity to bring the brand to life for the consumer. Well trained sales teams can also engage with shoppers on a one to one basis with product demonstrations and a Q & A session about everything from car seat safety to the best pushchair for city living.
