AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE
A
nd so, it’s done. The first Tableware International Awards, which began in planning stage almost a year ago, is complete, and before we throw ourselves into the second edition, we take a moment to reflect on all that has happened. There have been lots of highs, a few challenges, and of course, many firsts along the way, both for Tableware International and for the many people, retail stores and tabletop companies that have been involved. But, what has been most clear, from the many responses we have reeived – is the passion people who work in this industry have for it. From the judges who gave up their time and expertise, to the sponsors who believed in and committed to the concept, to the companies (more than 100 of them) who entered and attended the event – passion for the tabletop industry has shone through. And it is such passion, and the feedback we have received, that has convinced us, more than ever, that not only is an awards for the tableware industry very much in demand, but that we – Tableware International – are the publication to bring it to the table. But, don’t just take our word for it... “Having the opportunity to compete with such reputable designers and brands in the awards was an honour,” says Lenox, “it’s
special because we’ve been accepted as the best by industry expert judges.” Robert Suk, head of creative center, Rosenthal says: “Tableware International is a leading source of orientation in the tabletop world, so it was a great honour to receive the award”; while David Rive, GM, Beatriz Ball, adds: “Tableware International is the premier publication in our sphere of business, and the panel of judges were peerless; being nominated was a distinct honour for us and a milestone in our growth as an international company”. And, for Portmeirion Group, “being nominated was crucial to us as the awards help to identify key players in the industry on a global scale”, explains Carol Clyde, head of export sales. Celebrate with us, in this winners’ supplement, where we highlight the 16 winners of the Tableware International Awards of Excellence 2018, acknowledge the 48 finalists, and pay tribute to the many industry players who celebrated with us at the event. We are just getting started on the Tableware International Awards of Excellence 2019 and hope you will be a part of this exciting journey!

Celebrating tabletop OF EXCELLENCE
The 16 winners in the Tableware International Awards of Excellence 2018
A celebration of tabletop at the Tableware International Awards of Excellence event during Ambiente 2018 On Sunday, February 11, 2018, more than 200 people from the world of tableware gathered at Messe Frankfurt for the Tableware International Awards of Excellence 2018. This debut industry event, which took place during Ambiente 2018, was held to announce the winners in the Tableware International Awards of Excellence 2018. “We were delighted that so many tabletop companies, retailers and industry experts attended the first awards event,” says editor Kate Birch. The event, held in the Dimension room, Hall 4.2, began with drinks and networking, before Tableware International’s managing director, Malcolm Naish, kicked off proceedings. Acknowledging the importance of both Ambiente and Tableware International to the industry, Nicolette Neumann, VP of Ambiente, was up next, before host Stephan Föhr and editor Kate Birch took to the stage for the main event. Some 48 finalists, the top three in each of the 16 categories, selected by Tableware International’s prestigious panel of judges, were acknowledged during the awards, before the final 16 winners were revealed. Each of the winners took to the stage to receive their prestigious award.
“To receive an award in the firstever Tableware International Awards is a great honour and achievement for us,” says Hannah Lambert, marketing manager at LSA International, which won in the Serveware Category. Anssi Hurme, founder of Magisso, which won in the Casual Glassware Category, adds: “Receiving an award from such a well-acknowledged media and jury gives our design credibility." On receiving the Decorative Category award, Rosenthal’s head of creative center, Robert Suk, says: “Tableware International is a leading source of orientation in the tabletop world. Brands chosen will strongly benefit from the credibility and expertise of this institution.” Guests then stayed to mingle, listen to the band, Sous Le Mer, and enjoy the refreshments.

LUMINOUS COLLECTION www.hankook.com
A full fine bone china tableware collection, Luminous features a hand-painted décor with 24k gold-plated rims. The mesmerising design creates the image of throwing gold lustre and expresses radiant light. Using various special decal transfer methods, bright gold, platinum, embossing gold and iridescent pearl were applied, so each piece shines with different colours depending upon the angle. Each piece, made using the highest quality bone china body, is then finished with hand-painted 24k gold, yet is still microwave-safe. Perfect for mixing and matching with other gold-coloured tableware, or with Prouna’s Solar Collection. Pieces include dinner plates, bread plates, dessert plates, cereal bowls, soup bowls, dessert bowls, cups and saucers, a charger/platter and accent decoration pieces, such as a vase and jewellery box.
WHAT THE JUDGES SAY… “Beautifully done, elegant feel.” “Love the versatility and the price. So easily mixed with existing china as well as transitional enough to go modern or classic.” “This very sophisticated and innovative design takes fine dining to the far edge of modern. Very marketable, it features lustrous elements that are as easy at home as in a corporate or luxurious hotel setting. The mix-and-match concept allows the consumer to tell their own stories. It is patterns such as these that will hopefully keep the fine dinnerware industry alive for many years to come.”
Wendy Wen, director of Trade Fairs at Messe Frankfurt (H.K.), sponsor of the Fine Dinnerware category, handing the winning award to Young Shin Kim, president and CEO of Hankook Prouna 26 TABLEWARE INTERNATIONAL AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE
“Luminous has been one of our most important collections for the last couple of years, so we were delighted that the Tableware International Awards' judges felt the same way. It is such an honour to have Prouna’s continued efforts, which are focused on developing luxury designs, recognised in this way.” Brian Lee, GM, international sales, Hankook Chinaware

The other finalists were Rosenthal’s Junto Collection and Royal Crown Derby’s The Art Glaze Tableware Collection WHAT THE JUDGES SAY… “Excellent application of innovative technology combined with playful usage of patterns.” “Fun modern mix and functional design.”
LENOX CORPORATION
BLUE AZZURRO FROM LUCA ANDRISANI BY LENOX www.lenox.com
A bold take on casual entertaining, Lenox’s stunning new dinnerware collection, Blue Azzurro, in partnership with architect Luca Andrisani, features an on-trend design, creative innovation, a casual lifestyle approach and artisan appeal. Luca Andrisani brings his distinct international perspective based on collaborative material, innovation and research to each project. Inspired by the Italian style of pottery, Majolica, the collection features handpainted designs that layer shades of blue with contrasting geometrics, all offset by
the crisp white canvas of the durable porcelain body. Varying brushstrokes in hues of blue grace the modern coupe shapes, while touches of microwavesafe gold are interspersed throughout. Made by Lenox, all pieces deliver chip-resistant technology and dishwasher and microwave-safe durability, backed by the Lenox Lifetime Breakage Replacement Programme. In addition to dinnerware, there are kitchen accessories, including multiple-sized serving bowls and platters, tea accessories, tabletop canisters and woven placemats.
“Durable, functional and fun with an original perspective on contemporary dining, the collection perfectly combines a geometric set of interchangeable patterns and shapes inspired by architecture and Italian ceramic history to create an affordable and dynamic tablesetting.” “It’s important to the industry to see a casual tableware collection committed to offering a dynamic range of dining and decorative pieces, as this collection does.” Architect and designer Luca Andrisani accepting the award for the Blue Azzurro Collection by Lenox, which he designed
“It was exciting and special to be recognised by a global market and both Lenox and Luca Andrisani were honoured to have been chosen as the best by a panel of industry expert judges. The win was validation that the Blue Azzurro collection reached the level of acknowledgement we believed and hoped it deserved. DECORATIVE
Rosenthal was the winner in the Decorative Category for its Fondale Vase Series. The other finalists were Herend Porcelain Manufactory’s Ornamental Vase and Vista Alegre’s Folkifunki collection by Jaime Hayon ROSENTHAL
FONDALE VASE SERIES www.rosenthal.de
The Rosenthal vase series, designed by Scottish-Swedish designer duo Office for Product Design, represents the essence of a modern vase, providing the perfect stage for creative floral displays. Fondale invites people to arrange their flowers and blossoms in a performance akin to works of art. The purist design, with its cylindrical body and an asymmetric tapered collar, is underlined by a glossy surface inside the cone – available in platinum, gleaming gold, plain white or striking black – producing a reflective effect that accentuates individual flowers or grasses. A delicate lattice design inside the vase makes the flowers almost float in the vase, which in turn, makes the creation part of a distinctive design culture. The vases, with their traditional yet futuristic design, are artistic sculptures in themselves.
Robert Suk, head of creative center, Rosenthal GmbH accepting the award for its Fondale Vase Series 36 TABLEWARE INTERNATIONAL AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE
WHAT THE JUDGES SAY…
“Excellent, impressive, modern – a perfect vase and decorative item.” “The vase is a mix of an actual vase and an art piece. It’s very functional and convenient for flowers but also looks like an accomplished object without flowers.” “Distinctive modern clean lines.”
“We had already received three prestigious design awards for Fondale, so were very much hoping to be awarded with a fourth. It was a great honour to receive an award from Tableware International – a leading source of information and orientation in the tabletop world. Brands will strongly benefit from the credibility and expertise of this institution. It is a wonderful recognition of the designers and of our work. BARNYARD COLLECTION www.artelglass.com
Created from 100 per cent mouthblown lead-free glass, the Barnyard Collection from globally-renowned producer of luxury crystal couture Artel includes whisky glasses and a barware decanter, all hand-engraved with farm animal decorations and available in all of the stunning Artel colours. Celebrating life down on the farm, the Barnyard collection features ten different motifs of farm animals, each in a different colour – while the Cow is in Mahogany, the Goat comes in British Racer Green, the Goose in Amber and the Rabbit in Purple. The decanter features a tractor motif. Pieces are available either individually or as a set of ten, with each set including one glass with each design for mixing and matching.
“It is such a big honour for Artel to be recognised by such an esteemed group of judges and I really enjoyed and appreciated hearing what the judges said about the collection. The award is special as the Barnyard collection is so unique due to its non-traditional theme and use of colour - definitely not what most would describe as traditional fine glassware. To have the panel of judges acknowledge and appreciate our inventiveness and creativity really is very special. The awards event was terrific – a lovely, friendly crowd.”

CASUAL GLASSWARE
Magisso was the winner in the Casual Glassware Category for its Pino Pint Glass. The other finalists were La Rochere’s City Glasses and Stölzle Lausitz’s Nosing Glass MAGISSO
PINO PINT GLASS
WHAT THE JUDGES SAY…
www.magisso.com Designed by Simo Lahtinen for Magisso, the Pino Pint Glass (Pino is the Finnish word for Stack) is a contemporary interpretation of the classic pint shape of glass. Mouth-blown of crystalline, which is used to create the world’s greatest glasses, it is 100 per cent lead-free, has maximum clarity, and is extremely durable. The signature feature of the Pino Pint Glass is the grip that allows you to stack the glasses without getting stuck – the rim of the glass below is the only contact point for the glass above, so there is no friction between the two stacked glasses. The rim of the glass is heat-tempered to resist chipping when stacked. The base of the glass consists of extra ice weight to make it more stable to use.
“Looks stable and good storage. I like the way the liquid pours into the base.” “Nice stackable contemporary glass, interesting design.” “Clean and functional design.” “The Pino pint glass is a sleek, stackable, modern version of the everyday pint glass but would work well as a water or drinks glass.” “Both clever and beautifully designed – the perfect space-saving glass.” “The shape of this glass is what makes it so special. I love the idea of the way you can grip the glass and stackability for storing.” “Elegant fresh look and stacks too.” “Functional, simple and suited to a modern environment.” “Original, well-resolved form – functional.”

“Receiving an award from such a well-acknowledged media and jury gives our winning design, the Pino Pint Glass, credibility and opens a good PR opportunity. Glassware is a fairly new segment for our brand and Simo Lahtinen, head designer of the Pino Pint, is new to our in-house design team and a young talent, so we were surprised, but delighted. The Tableware International Awards of Excellence is a significant recognition for us, since besides judging the design, the jury also assessed the commercial potential of the product. The awards ceremony and programme were very suitable for Ambiente – elegant and efficient.” Anssi Hurme, creative director and founder, Magisso

“I was pleasantly surprised with the recognition the Crystalline Collection, received in this awards. It is a special collection created in collaboration with Jarrod Lim, a renowned Australian designer. The award shines a spotlight on pewter design and craftsmanship, which we have been passionate about for the past 133 years. I consider the award an endorsement of our collaborative approach to product design and development at Royal Selangor. It also provides a powerful incentive to continue pushing the boundaries of pewter crafting by playing around with different materials that complement pewter.”
ROYAL SELANGOR
CRYSTALLINE COLLECTION www.royalselangor.com
Conceived by Australian designer Jarrod Lim for Royal Selangor, Crystalline employs the faceted geometry of crystals to evoke a timeless, understated glamour across a range of pewter and wood decorative pieces, including a pair of tealights, salt and pepper shakers, candlestands, a jug, bud vase and candlelabrums. Inspired by the repeating lattice of crystals, which, when cut into angle surfaces, catch and reflect light, Jarrod recreated this in another medium, Pewter. The appeal of crystal-like structures and surfaces are given a unique spin in the Crystalline collection – high-polished Pewter is juxtaposed against the warmth of natural black walnut wood, providing a delightful contrast, as well as protecting the underlying surface from scratches.

ARTISANAL
Herend Porcelain Manufactory was the winner in the Artisanal Category for its Bravura Vase. The other finalists were Artel Glass’s Jungle Deco Collection and Michael Wainwright’s Borealis Cheese Board HEREND PORCELAIN MANUFACTORY
BRAVURA VASE www.herend.com
WHAT THE JUDGES SAY… “What more can you say when this is an absolutely magnificent piece from Herend.” “Herend is one of the few factories that could do this vase – the firing of this alone without the vase cracking is a miracle! “An amazing and unique work of art and skill – top marks!” “Unique highly-skilled craftsmanship, multiple colour gradients, unique technology of firing big pieces, combination of functionality and décor.”
Designed by a five-member master team of Herend Porcelain Manufactory – the conceptual visual design by Gyula Toth and Sandor Vida, the raw porcelain vase prepared by sculptor Zsolt Szaraka and master potter Balazs Fonyodi, and decorated by Attila Barath – this three-dimensional sculptured vase stretches the limits of what is possible with porcelain. The 90cm-high vase, which features ornamental flowers and butterflies (59 butterlies and 99 flowers, all shaped one by one, by hand) has 83 different elements and took 350 working hours to create – 32 hours to create the vase and a further eight hours to prepare the flower and butterfly decorations. The firing takes two weeks, due to the long heating and cooling periods required, and 200 hours were dedicated to decorating in matte paints. With Bravura, Herend has built the elements of Baroque architecture into the porcelain art of our times, while preserving the handicraft heritage. Symbolising the sensibility of nature and its constant cycles, the allegory of numerous realistic butterfly elements are used to reflect the cycle of extinction and re-birth. The colour tone of the vase, starting from its base, becomes lighter, illustrating the harmony of the earth and sky. Anges Vajda, export manager, Herend Porcelain Manufactory, accepting the award for its Bravura Vase
“We were very happy when the Herend name was announced in the Artisanal category. We receive invitations to numerous awards competitions, and we usually turn them down, but when such an awards is organised and awarded by an organisation like Tableware International, we take it as very important. This award is the best justification that the work of Herend and the craftsmanship of our painters and potters is appreciated, not just by our clientele worldwide, but by the trade. The event was ceremonial yet informal.” Laszlo Szesztay, commercial director, Herend Porcelain Manufactory Ltd. 46 TABLEWARE INTERNATIONAL AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE

COFFEE AND TEAWARE
Kosta Boda was the winner in the Coffee and Teaware Category for its Bruk Mugs – Autumn Colours. The other finalists were Creative Tops’ La Cafetiere Edited and Nambe’s Kyoto Tea Pot KOSTA BODA
BRUK MUGS – AUTUMN COLOURS kostaboda.com
WHAT THE JUDGES SAY… “Unusual to see this brand name in this category and a super product designed by these glass specialists.” “Clever and stylish.” “What I like about these is that they let the user embrace the warmth of the beverage while, between sips, the oak cover can hold the drink’s temperature or act as a coaster.”
Renowned for its fine glassware, Kosta Boda has recently expanded its hit glassware series Bruk to include new porcelain pieces, Bruk Mugs, in four new autumn colours and with wooden coasters. The word Bruk stems from the Swedish word ‘to use’ and is also a link to the special place where it all started for the company – the village of Kosta in Smaland with its old glassworks factory, which is surrounded by black lakes, deep forests and stunning nature. Designed for function and form, these highly functional pieces, made for everyday use, feature a cross design on the bottom for easy stackability and optimal drip dry, as well as feeling good in the hand. The stylishly designed mugs in the colours of Smokey Grey, Sea Turquoise, Denim Blue and Bordeaux, are each delivered with a practical and stylish oak cover to keep the heat in, and which can also be used as a coaster to protect the table. Made to mix and match and both dishwasher and microwave-safe, the mugs are sold in packs of two.
“Winning the award for the Bruk Mugs is recognition that Kosta Boda is able to design and produce wonderful porcelain items in a marketplace where the competition is extremely tough. The award is special for us since it’s our first product made of porcelain, instead of crystal glass, which is the mainstay of the Kosta Boda brand. The idea with the Bruk series is to move into the kitchen with functional but still beautiful items in porcelain, oak and crystal glass but with the same design DNA. It was a great awards event with lots of new learnings and contacts exchanged. It was interesting, too, to look at other brands and product categories which we don’t operate within.” Henrik Swartling, export sales director, Orrefors Kosta Boda, accepting the award for its Bruk Mugs – Autumn Colours 48 TABLEWARE INTERNATIONAL AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE

SIP OF GOLD BLACK & WHITE COLLECTION www.sieger-design.com
The black-and-white champagne goblets in the Sip of Gold Collection pair wafer-thin porcelain with the finest precious metal and four black-and-white decors – graphic stars or dots, a crystalline diamond pattern and a striking check. Creative director Michael Sieger drew inspiration for these exceptional drinking vessels from a classic silver antique goblet he received as a gift. The porcelain tumblers have a wall thickness of 2mm and the inside and outside rims are coated in 24k gold, making them just as appealing to drink from as they are to look at. Filled with sparkling champagne, the interplay between the precious metal and the drink results in hundreds of reflections and creates the impression of liquid gold. These pieces are designed to supplement the existing models in the collection – some smooth, others with a delicate relief – but all combinable in countless and unique ways.
