hey are back! Tableware International’s Awards of Excellence return for another year and once again, the awards ceremony will be held at Ambiente, which we are very thankful for. Judged by sector experts, from designers to suppliers to retailers taking a seat on the panel, this annual event has become a stalwart in the Ambiente diary. This special-edition supplement features the finalists in each of our 13 categories with two categories announced on the night itself – Designer of the Year, and the Lifetime Achievement Award. This is how it works: you’ll find three finalists per category: serveware, barware, flatware/ cutlery, casual glassware, fine glassware, decorative, coffee/ teaware, metals, hospitality dinnerware, hospitality glassware, casual dinnerware, fine dinnerware and innovation. On the night of the awards – Sunday, 28 January in the HoReCa Academy, Hall 11.0 at 6pm (drinks from 5.45pm) – the overall winner of each category will be announced. We’re pleased to say this year’s awards had one of the largest number of entrants, as the sector continues to bounce back. “The Tableware International Awards of Excellence is a chance for the industry to recognise its colleagues, to give credit where
credit is due and to honour the businesses and brands who are innovating and delivering the special, the exceptional and the good,” says Tableware International’s editor Mairead Wilmot. “As a team, we are continuously grateful for the support we personally receive from our judging panel – they graciously give their time and expertise to vote in each category. It can be a thankless task to wade through so many entries, but they do it for love of the industry and we do appreciate it!” Tableware International’s publisher, Paul Yeomans, adds: “I go to all of the international trade shows. I see a lot of products, so I know how important it is we host these Awards of Excellence. We do it to honour and support the companies who are out there producing new product, innovating and delivering, in what can be a really tough market. We see you and we support you.” Join us for the 2024 Tableware International Awards of Excellence on Sunday, 28 January in the HoReCa Academy, Hall 11.0 from 6pm. We look forward to seeing you there.

BARWARE
Full collections or individual pieces of barware, whether drinkware, serveware or bar tools, that tap into the trend for the elevated preparation and serving of drinks at home
AND THE FINALISTS ARE… Birchgrove The Birchgrove Duck Decanter Made of polished pewter and lead crystal glass, the Birchgrove Duck decanter is a stylish recreation of an iconic decanter originally designed by French specialists L’Esprit et le Vin in the 1960s. The Duck decanter was specifically developed for the sympathetic serving of old wines, and accommodating the careful treatment they require. The horizontal orientation of the ‘beak’ causes minimal disturbance to the wine as it is
being decanted from the bottle and, similarly, when serving. Then surface area of the wine that is open to the air, once decanted, allows a limited amount of aeration of the wine but not too much. The Birchgrove design has retained all these features in their new Duck decanter but has redefined and smoothed the shape to create a new look that is fresh and modern.
Our panel says:
“Everyone loves a good comeback and Birchgrove has done a great job bringing back this old classic. While wine driven, this great design is incredibly versatile allowing for many decanting possibilities as well as giving us a wonderful added visual element for entertaining. It’s also always nice to see pewter used in tabletop” TABLEWARE INTERNATIONAL AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE 33

INNOVATION United Tables Fortessa Terra Nova
Terra Nova by Fortessa offers sustainable tableware crafted from recycled clay, seamlessly blending the allure of natural and eco-friendly materials with a holistic design inspired by geometric precision. The recycled clay boasts a light shade, unglazed on the exterior, for a natural, tactile experience. Meanwhile, the inner surfaces are glazed with reactive white or dark brown finishes, creating a striking contrast with the warm and powdery exterior. The hand application of these glazes adds a unique touch to each piece. Setting itself apart from the typical hand-pottery appearance of recycled ceramic tableware, Terra Nova reimagines the aesthetics, combining natural elements with a contemporary design. Terra Nova embodies unwavering sustainability, made from over 90% recycled material from ceramic surplus and manufactured in Portugal in one of the world’s most technically advanced, energy-efficient, and resource-conserving production facilities. All Terra Nova items meet food safety standards and exhibit exceptional mechanical strength, rendering them ideal for the rigors of the demanding gastronomic environment. The line was designed by Carsten Gollnick. His inspiration: “My products are always a balance between the appreciation of the necessary, functional requirements of the scenic context and the sensually inspiring, aesthetic elements of an object. The intention is to reconcile human needs for functionality and emotion in a new aesthetic context.” Terra Nova stands out as a casual dining collection, offering a diverse range of plates, bowls and mugs, making it an excellent choice for both striking and delicate arrangements. Our panel says:
“A great collection with great reference this collection needs to grow!”
This collection of diverse objects (made between mid-2022 and early 2023) is an ongoing project, meaning it is the beginning of a new story rather than an arrival point. It’s the first chapter of an exploration that Alberto Alessi has decided to undertake for the pleasure of discovering new territories where designers and entrepreneur are free to establish the rules of the creative process autonomously. If there is an aim, it is to place an accent on the experimental formulation of the industrial model that has distinguished the galaxy of design investigations Alessi has fostered over the years. This first instalment of Il Tornitore Matto originated in conversations with Giulio Iacchetti – he is co-director of the meta project. Of course it was also generated by the designers who took part: Pierre Charpin, Federico Angi, Michael Anastassiades, Nika Zupanc, Naoto Fukasawa, Paolo Ulian, Michele De Lucchi and Andrea Branzi.

DECORATIVE Vista Alegre Still Life Inspired by still life paintings from the 17th century and the large Empire vases in the gardens, this vase and box, with a surrealist touch, feature a bouquet of flowers in porcelain from which a snail emerges, symbolizing home, and a butterfly lands, alluding to the concept of metamorphosis that these pieces represent. This idea is expressed in the vase through its use with real flowers, which in the piece are transformed into flowers of the whitest porcelain biscuit. In the box, mostly decorated in black and white, there is only one colored butterfly that expresses the idea that it flew from the vase and that it will now cause a metamorphosis in that piece. This vase and box are large-format pieces where white biscuit is combined with black porcelain biscuit. There are about 40 flowers carved and glued by hand that are then delicately painted by the manufacture.
Our panel says:
“These works of art take your breath away with their surreal depictions of still life paintings combined with a masterful use of porcelain art. Well done!”

And who better than Inga Sempé with her love of classic brasserie cooking to rework this iconic object! Giving carte blanche to this famous designer, Revol reaffirms its attachment to its culinary culture by making the cocotte a centerpiece on the dining table. The design’s originality lies in the lip that goes around the edge, giving the Bombance cocotte dish its comforting roundness. This lip comes out from the body of the dish at each end to form very strong one-piece handles – a simple idea at first sight but a technically complex one. A famous French designer living in Paris, trained by Marc Newson and Andrée Putman, Inga Sempé expresses – via collaborations with great Italian, Scandinavian and French design houses – her taste for making everyday objects in simple designs.
