Big buyers from Tesco, Harrods and Ocado hit Toy Fair yesterday

Standing proud Insect Lore, stand G30, was thrilled yesterday to be named 2019 Stand of the Year. “We’re celebrating our 50th year of trading, so this is a very special award for us,” says VP Marc McManamna. “We wanted to make it an imaginative and impactful space that reflected our nature-oriented business.” Roland Earl, Director General of the BTHA, says: “The stand is very nicely built. It’s a creative use of space and a very clever design.” Meanwhile, Shell Scheme of the Year 2019 went to The Elf on the Shelf, Upper Level 155. MDs Toby Spoerer and Lewis Finch, pictured with Account Manager Bea Ayres, say “Santa is very happy!”

Ocado

First up was John Hext, Tesco’s Category Manager, Toys & Nursery, who visited the show on day one and two, said he was “looking for everything”. “I’ve seen a lot of new stuff and plenty of innovative stuff out there. Generally I think there’s a lot more innovation and play value. Perhaps because it’s so competitive out there, parents want more for their money. Generally, as a result, I’d say the standard is rising.” Thomas Hampton, Buyer, Technology & Toys, Harrods, was also at the show yesterday. “It’s been fantastic to see so much variety at London Toy Fair this year with exciting newness for

Harrods

autumn/winter 2019.” There was good news for the Greenhouse, too, as Carla Sydenham, Buying Manager, Ocado, headed there to see the “great innovation coming through in the toy industry. “There have been some lovely fast-paced and fun educational toys and games this year,” she said. She’s pictured above with Buying Assistant Georgina Checkley and Senior Buying Manager James Gowing.

Somewhere over the rainbow Tapping into the dolls and collectable categories, both of which are doing well, Mookie’s new RainboElla range allows girls to create and customise their own dolls. The RainboElla set delivers dolls heads, hair gels and body gels, along with a curing machine, which girls use to design and mould their own doll bodies, hair and accessories; and, with seven dolls to collect and different coloured gels, the doll customisation options are endless. “With RainboElla, you really can create all the different colours of the rainbow,” says Gemma Lewington, Marketing Manager of Mookie, stand E149.

Funko, stand E130 E130, debuted the Pop! Vinyl figure at San Diego Comic Con in 2010 as the Funko Force 2.0 in a clamshell packaging with characters from the DC Universe including Batman, Green Lantern and Batgirl.

That’s the Spirit! After a trial in Smyths stores in October 18, Flair are launching a new range of Spirit Riding Free at Toy Fair, stand E39.“The demand was huge and sold out,” said marketing manager Marta Zietkiewicz. Based on the adventure series about a girl called Lucky and her wild mustang Spirit, it was named as one of the properties in growth by NPD.

Fighting fakes! Continuing its battle with illicit selling, SnapDragon, Upper Level 200, returns to Toy Fair for the second year running. “We had a great year last year and a fantastic first few days this year,” says Mary Kernohan, head dragon. Some 12 per cent of the toys coming into Europe are determined as fakes, and SnapDragon is passionate about tackling such illicit selling. “Fake toys are not just a danger to customers, but can also affect a brand’s reputation as well as their revenue streams,” adds Mary. “We are offering all companies at Toy Fair a free no-obligation brand check, to see what their scale of issues might be, and we have a free guide of top tips.”

The number of new games introduced on Big Potato’s stand H46 – “the most games we’ve ever released at Toy Fair,” says Emily Polglase, Head of Sales, pictured here with Alex Lolies, Account Manager. The big game of the year, 20 Second Showdown, is a fun and interactive challenge, where two teams go to head-to-head competing to complete challenges in 20 seconds. The star of the game is the new and patented timer that features sound, so you know exactly when time has run out! “And the beauty of it is that you can sound-test the timer in the box – retailers are loving it,” Emma adds.

Top banana! Smell it, peel it, collect it! That’s the idea behind Bandai’s new collectable range, Bananas – scented bananas that are peeled to reveal collectables – with 24 Crushies and 48 Squishies to be collected. Unveiled in December last year and a sell-out success at launch, Bananas takes centre stage on Bandai Upper Level 600 with Series 3, the Chocolate Dip Bananas, which was picked as one of Toy Fair’s Hero Toys for 2019. “We’ve also got 13 limited edition bananas, and for spring/summer, we have Lemon & Lime Bananas,” says Emma King, Product Manager.

NEWS Sneak peek for Boney M Oh My Lord! Sheyla Bonnick from 80s disco sensation Boney M dropped by the John Adams stand G100 yesterday to check out the company’s hottest games releases for 2019. Sheyla is co-creator of Sneak Peek, a popular game from the company’s portfolio and she’s pictured here with co-creator Maureen Hiron and Bruno Gallone, Sales Director at John Adams.

Hat-trick of awards! Character Options, stand E119, has scooped three awards at Toy Fair 2019, securing Supplier of the Year and Craze of the Year at Tuesday night’s Toy Retailer of the Year Award, as well as picking up an award in Toy Fair’s Hero Toys for 2019 with its Peppa Pig Stage Playset.

Ravensburger’s Marketing Coordinator Cornée Marlow tells us why stand E140 should be on any Toy Fair visitor’s list of must-sees What are you most looking forward to at the Fair? Meeting the artist and winners of our What IF? We Are a Puzzle competition!

How would you sum up the last trading year? We’re pleased to announce our seventh consecutive year of growth, despite a tough trading year, thanks to our commitment to developing high-quality and innovative products, and the continuous support of our retail partners.

Tell us a little about your stand this year.

Four go West! Over at West Design Products, stand C45, the team are choosing their favourite products, ranging from Creativity For Kids’ Fashion Headbands to Metallic Paint Sticks. Shown here with their pick of the pops are, from left, Eric Metzger, Andy Ninnis, Andy Bennett and Brendan Taylor.

Collectable pals Head to the Learning Resources, stand D36, where you can make friends with the Playfoam Pals. These little creatures come in a pod of the creative concoction, and MD Dennis Blackmore (pictured far left) says, ‘’with the addition of two new series they are going from strength to strength.’’

Every Ravensburger, BRIO and ThinkFun product will be on display, as well as nine interactive game stations where we will encourage our visitors to try our new board games for 2019.

Why should buyers come to see you this year? We have nearly 200 brand new, never-seen-before products across our Ravensburger, BRIO and ThinkFun ranges, as well as nine TV campaign-supported game stations to explore, GraviTrax to experience, puzzles to inspire imagination and pre-school toys to discover, there is something for every age and taste.

What’s your brew of choice? I like to keep things simple, strong black coffee is always welcome.

There’s Sea Dogs Extreme, prehistoric crustaceans th at kids can breed, feed and observe; a Digital Safe, an extension of the Spy Series, to encourage coding; and a brandnew Student Globe, which is made by Colombus, the oldest globe manufacturer in the world. “There’s been so much interested in the new products – we’ve been really busy,” says Emma Hanlon, International Accounts Manager.

Multiple retailer Toy Barnhaus, based in the south-east, was a finalist in the Toy Industry Awards. Company founders Stephen Barnes and Mark Buschhaus talk about product, price matching and positive thinking You were both managers for Woolworths. tell us how you came to run toy stores together. We were both at Woolworths for more than 10 years, and loved being there at the time. We’d known each other for a number of years, managing stores nearby. However, in 2008, we worked together to help turn around our local store – Crawley – which was in need of some help to bring it up to standard. We worked there together for a few months, until Woolies closed down in early 2009. About a month after the closure, we were looking round in Crawley, and felt there was a real gap in the town for a toy shop, as Gamleys had also closed a couple of years before. After some negotiating in the local mall, we managed to get a small unit on a short-term lease, so we could trial a new store. The name came from melding our surnames together,

“Fortnite has a lot of potential, as there is a definitely a gap in the market for a boys’ property to really capture their imagination”

giving a distinctive name that’s unique, and lots of people think we’re a German company! We used our knowledge of what toys sold well in Woolworths, employed ex-Woolworths staff, used ex-Woolworths fixtures, and even our shopfitter was an ex-Woolworths manager! What’s special about your stores? As you can guess from our previous answer, we tend to run it a bit like a mini Woolworths! We have taken the best bits from there, and then improved on what they did not do so well. Our shops are clearly laid out, and merchandised well. We have lots of customers who think we are part of a national chain and think we have stores all over the country! The knowledge of our staff is also key. Being an independent, one thing that sets us apart is our customer service. We will do whatever

we can to get a product for a customer, and stock is regularly moved between stores when customers have a specific order. Why do you think you made it to the finals of the awards? It was an honour to be nominated for the finals, as there are lots of great toy stores all over the country. We try to run our stores in a professional fashion, maintaining the look of a big chain, while offering the personal service of

Retail Interview Fantastic finalist! Toy Barnhaus was a finalist in the Specialist Multiple Toy Retailer of the Year (2-29 stores) category of the Toy Industry Awards an independent retailer. We try to treat everyone as we would like to be treated in business. We trade with all suppliers that our customers want us to buy from, and always maintain a positive relationship with them. If there is an issue, we deal with it, and then move on to the next thing. One of the best things about the toy trade is there’s always something new coming along, and you never know which supplier will have the next big thing. We always try to be positive as, although it’s a job, we are only selling toys, and it should be fun! How many years have you been coming to Toy Fair? Do you have a fond memory of the show, or something that really sticks in your mind? This year will be our tenth Toy Fair, and they’ve gone by so fast. I guess when we first started, we did not deal with a lot of the larger suppliers, so we were not able to get on the stands without appointments. In following years, it was great to be able to see these stands, and feel like we’d made it! It is a key show for us, and we bring along our store managers, as it gives them a chance to see the

new products hitting their stores later this year. It is probably our busiest few days here, but it is definitely well worth the time. How has 2018 been for the business? Any highs or lows? Overall 2018 has been a solid year for the business, and given all the upheaval both in the toy trade and in the country in general, we are very pleased to have traded up year on year. The summer was great for us, with the prolonged hot weather. We sold hundreds of paddling pools, and thousands of waterguns, and it gave a nice boost in the middle of the year, and we carried over less stock than ever from the summer. Harry Potter has been great for us over the past few months. Our customers had been asking for it for years, so it was great to be able to offer them a range of products, and the sales certainly did not disappoint on it! You can’t talk about 2018 without mentioning L.O.L. Surprise!.

All credit to MGA for creating such a fantastic product, then evolving it quickly, and also keeping stock coming throughout the year. When it all arrived in October, we were a bit worried we had too much, but the sales in the final quarter were fantastic, and a major part of why we had a successful Christmas. On your website you say you will price match with the local High Street. Does that ensure people come to you instead of going elsewhere? We introduced our price match a couple of

years ago, and yes, it was to keep customers coming to us. We’re in malls with all the major competition around us, and it is something that none of them do. It is also something that customers do not expect to see in an independent retailer. We have found that it is not used nearly as much as you think it might, but when it is, the customer usually buys several other items that are not price matched, so we end up with a good sale. If you don’t do this, the customer will most likely take all their business elsewhere, and won’t return to us first in the future. We do only price match against other high street stores, and not pure online retailers, and customers understand this, and appreciate us offering the service. You say you have plans for ecommerce, is that still in the pipeline? Is that an important move for you to make? E-commerce is in our plans, though not immediately. We both know that our strength lies in shops; both of us are shop retailers. When we do move into online, it will be with the right partner and colleagues to ensure that it looks as professional and is a great complement to our shops. What else is in the pipeline for Toy Barnhaus in 2019? Any particular plans or focuses? As anyone who knows us is aware, we never Day1_TFDaily_HalfPage_BRIO_FINAL.pdf

Toy Fair is always a great start to the year. What do you look forward to and why? Toy Fair is a fantastic opportunity to continue the momentum created earlier and really start the year on the front foot. The opportunity to officially launch our brandnew ranges and licences under the bright lights of Toy Fair is as thrilling as ever. For me, Toy Fair is still a standout event in the toy industry calendar and it’s one I look forward to every year. Tell us about the hot new licences on board for Posh Paws for 2019 It really does feel like we’ve covered every base in 2019, from continuing our renowned partnerships with the licensing giants of Disney and Universal; to signing up the brand new pre-school property Pirata and Capitano. And of course, our most recent licence announced this year is Moshi Twilight, a revolutionary sleep story audio app which has the vision of making bedtime a dream for millions of families and we really believe it can!

2018 has been a real year of change for Posh Paws. Talk us through the changes and what they mean for the company. We ‘re now into our 13th year as a business and, after manufacturing in excess of 50 million plush toys, we’re poised to enter a new era of growth. We’re renowned for producing high -uality licensed plush toys and that will always remain our focus, however, opportunity has given us a new vision for the company’s aspirations. The first step in this has been signing some fantastic new licences with multi-territory appeal. This has enabled us to realign our horizons from a previously UK centred operation to one with genuine international focus and also to invest in key personnel in every department bringing with them their skills and experience to deliver our goals. Posh Paws also has a new look for 2019 – tell us more! New licences, new markets and new personnel almost demanded a fresh new look. The new design highlights the new energy in the company, while also reflecting our core values. As a business, our vision is to create

NEWS The Daily News caught up with Damian Hall, Sales Director, from Mookie, stand E149, to talk dolls, trampolines and coffee! What are you most looking forward to at London Toy Fair 2019?

The beginning of day one when the lastminute final touches have been made and you can proudly reflect on the stand before the excitement starts. The second is the end when the meetings are over, plans shared and the feedback is gathered!

How would you sum up the last trading year?

Unboxing the unboxers! Character, stand E119, puts a new spin on the unboxing craze – dolls with their own boxes to unbox! Senior Brand Manager Laura Gunton introduces Boxy Girls – dolls who love shopping online and having cute little packages delivered. “The packages all contain little fashion accessories, shoes, sunglasses and stickers for the dolls to unbox,” says Laura.

Trading up! Building on its success in the trading cards category, Bliss Distribution, stand F100, has extended its successful Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game with a brandnew concept, Speed Duel. Adapting the highest-grossing mobile game on Android, with characters based on the anime now showing on Netflix, Speed Duel is “a bit like chess, but you can decide what the pieces do”, says GM Michelle Larson, pictured with the team.

Volatile and challenging, due to the combination of economic uncertainty, significant shifts in the retail landscape and unnatural weather patterns. Fortunately, we’re a very diversified business with our own IP and strong brand distribution partnerships that helped us deliver double-digit growth in 2018.

Tell us a little about your stand this year, anything new and exciting?

This is the most important toy fair for Mookie for a number of years, as we will show an unprecedented level of innovation to build on 2018! We will reveal the most innovative and exciting trampoline in the market under our TP brand. Following the success of Robo Chameleon in 2018, we’ll share some really exciting lines from Silverlit to continue our aggressive growth plans for 2019. Finally, we welcome Yulu, an incredibly inventive and dynamic toy company.

Name one hero product that you and your team are very excited about showing at the fair?

#Snapstar is a new line from Yulu within Dolls that delivers on trend and unique Physical and Digital play experience.

And finally – we must ask – what’s your brew of choice? I’m a coffee man and like espresso – ideally South American.

This is your first time exhibiting at Toy Fair, what’s your story? I was a creative director in a London based creative and social media agency when I thought of JUNKO – the world’s first junk modelling construction toy. It combined two things I really care about - the environment and helping kids learn to be more creative. So I decided it was time for a change.

How did the idea for Junko come about? It all began when I was making a junk model car from a juice carton with my children and we didn’t have anything to make working wheels with – it got me thinking, if only! We then spent two years developing JUNKO. Now we have a re-usable junk modelling system, made from recycled plastic!

What made 2019 the perfect time for you to take your first stand here at Toy Fair? We’ve just gone to market, so it’s time to meet the big wide world!

What have you heard about the show that drew you to Toy Fair and what are you hoping to get out of it? That’s easy, it’s where everyone who is anyone in the toy industry gathers so we need to be there to introduce JUNKO. We’re hoping people will share our enthusiasm for the brand.

We believe we make the sort of toys retailers should be selling. Reusable, creative, made from recycled plastic and in recyclable, plastic-free packaging. It’s up to independent companies like us to make eco-friendly, responsible products as many larger toy companies are not making these or packaging their toys responsibly. We believe that parents are becoming more aware of these issues and it will influence what they choose to spend their money on.

You obviously have a strong eco message – tell us more about the J-Heroes and their environmental message. Are they likely to appear online as well? The J-Heroes are the stars of our own original eco-friendly comics, which are included with the kits. They’re children and they make a difference and that’s the main message we want to get across, that kids have the power to influence adults and help save the world! The baddie in the comics is called L’Fill (short for landfill) and the things he does to mess up our planet appear quite ridiculous unfortunately they’re the same things we earthlings do every day. The next J-Heroes story will be about L’Fill drilling for oil in The Arctic. Ultimately we’ll animate the J-Heroes, but the exciting thing we’re working on now is a bumper Christmas annual for next year.

STEAM toys are big news at the moment. Do you think your Junko products bring something new and different to the market? Many STEAM toys offer quite linear play but JUNKO is much freer. It is an extension of junk modelling. It encourages kids to think creatively and work out how to join disparate pieces of junk together to make the toy they’re dreaming of. The learning skills children gain from junk

modelling – that is combining random junk materials to make a toy – require a broad range of skills, including what’s known as divergent problem solving. It also develops creativity, innovation and cognitive ability. Plus, it’s good fun, especially the messy bit at the end where the kids cover everything in paint!

How will the range expand if the first Junko kits are received well by retailers? We’re developing some add-ons which kids can buy to make their junk models work even better; flashing lights, a catapult to fire paper balls, stencils. We’re also looking at some other full kits but they’re a secret for now!

How do you communicate with retailers and what are your plans for working with them in 2019? We’re just at the beginning of our journey to retail. Toy Fair and the Laser Beam Toys adverts in Toys ‘n’ Playthings are our first steps!

Will you have any offers for retailers visiting the show? I think it’s too soon to start discounting. For us it’s about finding like-minded people who believe in the product.

Who should be sure to stop by the stand and see you – and what types of retailers are you hoping to see? We want to meet anyone interested in what we’re doing, whether they’re journalists, bloggers or retailers. We look at JUNKO as a mainstream niche. It’s not a cheap toy made in the far east. It’s a quality UK product and it will appeal to people who are concerned both about buying responsibly and who are switched on to their children’s development. We would love to meet retailers who appeal to that demographic, for example: John Lewis, Wicked Uncle and other eco-friendly and educational outlets.

And finally, what would make your first Toy Fair? We’d like to be noticed, meet people and, of course, if we can start the process of selling in to retailers we’ll be over the moon!

Staying safe Intellectual Property expert, SnapDragon, Upper Level 200, has pulled together these six top-tips that will help you protect your brand online 1) Register your trademark in as many territories as possible – and definitely in China. 2) Register products and trademarks with the EUIPO enforcement database and its equivalent elsewhere. This is a free service and helps to protect your brand at ports of entry. 3) Translate your brand into as many direct and slightly indirect variants as possible and search regularly for these on online platforms. Report sellers for infringing activity and get listings removed. 4) If you find counterfeits, buy a sample and get to know it so you can help others – including customs – tell the difference. Be super aware in terms of customer safety. 5) Consider incorporating at least three secret ingredients into your product so you can always tell it apart from the fake. And don’t stick all the details on your website! Don’t forget, Snapdragon has been there, done it and got the (genuine) T-shirt. The experts are here to help.

MEDIA SPOTLIGHT

Kids get financial freedom Having surveyed more than 20,000 children in the UK over the last 12 months, Kids Insights reports how new technologies are empowering children to financial independence Data from Kids Insights shows the number of children aged four to 12 who save their money in a bank account has increased from 25 per cent at the beginning of the year, to just under 30 per cent now. Children also report that they’re saving more money too. Over 2018, the percentage of children that are saving has risen steadily throughout the year, in particular among boys. The use of pre-paid cash cards such as goHenry for spending has more than doubled (from four per cent to 10 per cent) in seven-nine year olds since the beginning of the year. goHenry is a leading brand in a wave of digital apps that come with a prepaid card that parents can control. The app is currently aimed at children aged six and beyond, meaning that much younger children now have the

freedom to shop more independently and make card payments than ever before. Digitally-enabled children are, therefore, becoming more financially independent from a much earlier age, and the piggy bank is shifting to a virtual world. Kids Insights’ latest data also shows these financial products are enabling children to spend both on and offline. The figures allow them to cross tabulate the behaviours of those children aged four-12 with a goHenry card and so discover they are much more likely than the average child to spend “a lot” on all categories, including apps, books, clothing, going to the cinema, new tech, toys and video games.

“The days of kids pleading with their parents for a special gadget or toy are being worn away as they gain greater control of their own finances”

This comes as they revealed last month how the nature of Christmas presents has changed, with children between the age of four and 12 expected to receive a total of £483 million in cash gifts this year, an average of more than £70 per child in the UK. This again shows how children have the freedom and power to choose their own presents independently, with the days of kids pleading with their parents for a special gadget or toy being worn away as they gain greater control of their own finances. As the ecosystem of today’s children continues to change, this undoubtedly affects the way children shop. They are empowered to make their own decision on what they buy, when, and where from. Although the ever-changing landscape of this generation of children may present some challenges, it clearly also provides many opportunities for those brands able to adapt and respond to these changes.

Greenhouse Interview

Wooden it be lovely Technology may be advancing apace, but good quality wooden toys are still a huge draw for both parents and children, as Jumini’s owner and MD Julian Garner explains For those who aren’t so familiar with Jumini, can you tell us a little more about what kind of products you produce? Our aim is to produce innovative, beautifully-finished, well-made yet sensibly-priced wooden toys and still offer competitive trade discounts to our customers. The range has grown considerably since we launched the Jumini brand in 2016 as we develop in response to customer feedback.

Despite a technologically advancing world, there’s still a place in the market for good quality wooden toys. Why

Stand GH26

do you think Jumini’s wooden toys appeal so much to consumers? Wooden toys are environmentally friendly, longlasting and have a warmth about them which plastic toys don’t offer. Today’s parents and grandparents are keen to offer children the kinds of toys they grew up with – and that’s exactly what we have to offer! We’ve found that children love to play with our toys – they’re detailed enough so they recognise what they are, yet basic enough to encourage their imagination.

Having a point of difference has never been so important. With so many products to select from, what sets Jumini’s products apart from the rest? We recognise times are hard for our retailers, so we strive to provide value for money and offer eye-catching designs without sacrificing quality.

TODAY’S PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS ARE KEEN TO OFFER CHILDREN THE KINDS OF TOYS THEY GREW UP WITH

We offer free carriage for orders of £150 and above, and don’t insist on ordering case quantities – which means new customers can try Jumini on their shelves with minimal risk. Creating products that support little ones’ development is important to your brand. Tell us more about how this ambition influences your developmental process. Our toys are all designed with children’s play value in mind – they’re not just pretty toys to put on the shelf! We consider the Early Years’ Foundation Stages of development and offer a wide range of toys for ages six months and upwards, recognising that learning starts very early.

You’re an environmentally-conscious brand. What business decisions have you made to ensure you’re doing your bit to protect the planet? We’ve ensured our manufacturers only use materials from sustainable sources and that they are a responsible employer. We also send any

non-saleable products such as damaged packaging to local charities rather than to landfill.

What’s new for Jumini at London Toy Fair this year? We’re excited to be sharing our new SmileyWorld

collection with visitors this year, which is designed to help little ones recognise key emotions through play. Our intention is to introduce a comprehensive nursery range, so you’ll see we’ve added a baby gym and bouncy chair alongside the wooden toys.

What are you hoping to achieve at Toy Fair this year? As we’re still relatively new to the toy industry, Toy Fair is a great showcase for our products. We’re hoping to attract new customers as well as it being an opportunity for our current customers to see our entire range in the flesh.

Do you have any special show offers? We’ll have a starter pack giving 10 per cent discount off the normal trade price to potential new customers, as well as several 10 per cent discount offers for current customers.

What else mustn’t visitors miss on your stand? We won an award at Toy Fair for our stand last year, so everyone should come and see why!

Is Toy Fair an important event for you? It’s the first one in the trade fair season for us, so very important one to get early feedback from customers on what we’re doing well, and what not so well, so we can grow and develop throughout the year.

Buyers’ best in show The buyers were out in force at Toy Fair on Wednesday. Daily News caught up with some of them as they were walking the aisles… Adrian Kelly and Ian Kelly, Directors, Kellys Toymaster, Ireland “We’re here for all three days of the show and have been really excited to see lots of great new refreshes. We cover all categories, but we’re focused on licensing products. There’s a lot of new kids’ movies out this year and we’ve spotted some great licenced products – Toy Story will be a big one for us, as will Frozen. We’re loving the new licensed Scalextrics – Marvel and Wacky Races.” Jonathan and Elizabeth Amphlett Toytastik, Chepstow, South Wales Daily News spoke to Jonathan Amphlett, while his wife Elizabeth was busy playing Are You Dumber than a Box of Rocks on the Paul Lamond stand - we’re not saying it’s addictive, but it certainly wasn’t the first time she’d played it! ‘’Paul Lamond and University Games has been brilliant for us,’’ says Jonathan.’’Big Potato Games have also been a big seller. We’re also looking to expand the ranges from existing suppliers – we’ve already been to see Magformers and their Clicformers units.”

Sarah Keep, Assistant Manager, Pandemonium “The sheer size and volume can be a little overwhelming. However, it’s always surprising to see the level of new products coming to market. There are some great deals this year at Toy Fair for visitors. I have to say Halilit were amazing with great product lines and lovely designs.”

Tasha Young, Retail Supervisor, Aerospace Bristol “This is my first Toy Fair and so far I’ve found it fun and informative. As we have a full-scale Concorde in our museum it was great to find an inflatable toy replica. We’re focusing on drones this year to add further variety to our gift shop and have seen some great options while here. As we are celebrating 50 years of Concorde this year, our most exciting moment has been to see for the first time the bespoke Concorde packaging that JP Perkins have created for us which includes both the Concorde logo alongside our own.” Tasha is pictured (right) with Rachel Chivers, Visiting Services Manager.

Bill Deakin, Silly Billy’s, Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire “I’m feeling positive about Toy Fair. It’s a great show and everyone’s up for it in these challenging times. I’ve been in the toy business for 22 years and it’s always nice to get back to Toy Fair. I’ve got some great stuff coming from LEGO soon, and my Ty order is in already – it always does well for us. I’m heading off see Playmobil and BigJigs now.”

Licensee Spotlight Jazwares

All about the boys The Daily News sits down with Jonny Taylor, UK Managing Director of Jazwares to discuss all things Fortnite!

You have probably one of the hottest licences of the year – Fortnite – what’s on offer? Our line consists of a wide range of true-togame action figures featuring the most popular outfits, Domez, loot boxes, building sets, environments, game-replica weapons and tools, plush, vehicles, and so much more. The line is extensive and we’re confident it will be one of the hottest lines in the toy market this year. Some of the development is truly amazing and we’re confident the fans will love it.

Stan d B100

Retailers tell us they’re selling fewer boys’ toys as games like Fortnite catch the imagination of the over-eight age range. Do you think these licensed products can help to turn things around? We expect Fortnite to drive a significant number of sales this year, which is great news for the category. We’ll only get a true feel for the size of the brand in a few weeks, once

Hot licences for 2019 Fortnite Roblox Fingerlings Feisty Pets Angry Birds

retailers are properly set for spring. We’re lucky to have several other boys’ brands that are performing particularly well, such as Roblox, Fingerlings Untamed and Feisty Pets. It seems the boys’ market is going through a re-balance right now, where the needs aren’t quite being matched by the range of goods available. It’s safe to say video game, app-based properties and toy programmes with innovation are becoming a more important part of the overall category mix. The pace of change is faster than ever and manufacturers need to be nimble to ride the trends. I’m confident we’ll see growth again once the market in the boys’ category once offering better matches market trends.

Another video game licence is Roblox – what can visitors expect to see in this range? Roblox hosts millions of games with an enviable player base of 4.5 million monthly active players in the UK. Our product line is entering season five and continues to encourage fans to build out their world of Roblox – with action figures, vehicles and playsets.

What’s new from Fingerlings and Untamed? Both brands have performed phenomenally well and are well positioned for a very strong 2019. Some of the new development and creatures coming through in our opinion are the best

“I’m confident we’ll see growth again soon in the boys’ category once the market offering better matches market trends” yet and we’re incredibly excited to see the new series translate into retail sales.

You have a new Angry Birds range ready for the new film release. Tell us more about that. The game play on many platforms is as popular as ever with 2.3 million monthly active players in the UK. The content shorts on YouTube also have a solid fan base, so the timing seems right to introduce a new range with the new movie in September. Our line consists of novelty, plush, figures and playsets. What I love about the development is that it really captures the spirit of the game play.

What else can visitors expect to see? Zstrings is a pocket money line launching in January, which is in essence a cat’s cradle. It’s seeing craze level sales in many markets and we expect to emulate that same success in the UK.

Do you have any show offers? Yes, there’s a special offer for Toymaster members.

What are you hoping to achieve at this year’s Toy Fair? London is my favourite toy show. Set in a beautiful location, it’s relaxed and has a buzz and energy of its own and represents a fantastic opportunity to show the entire UK customer base our latest and greatest developments. It’s also the ideal time to catch up, to get a feel for how everyone’s year ahead will play out.

Hot brands for 2019 Ben 10 Powerpuff Girls Bakugan

With Ben 10 and The Powerpuff Girls still capturing new viewers for Turner, Graham Saltmarsh, Director of Licensing Northern Europe, Cartoon Network Enterprises EMEA, reveals their 2019 plans As an official sponsor, Turner has a big presence at London Toy Fair. What is it about the fair that makes it such an important event? The sheer number of key players in the toy industry and retail buyers make this a mustattend show. It also gives us an opportunity to remind our licensees and advertisers that Cartoon Network was the number one pay TV channel for all kids in 2018, which is a huge endorsement for our brands.

We loved your presence at the show last year – with the Ben 10 phone box outside Olympia, the café, the mascots, and more! What can we expect from Turner at Toy Fair 2019? The café works really well for us as it’s away from the main floor and somewhere we can talk to our partners more freely. Off the show floor, we’ve been working on a number of retail activations so the excitement will be concentrated inside this year.

What lines have been most successful from the second wave of toys for the newly-rebooted Ben 10 animated series, and why do you think they were such a hit? The Classic Omnitrix is always a top performer and, according to NPD, has been in the top five role play products since launch in July 2017. Kids love the transformative nature of Ben 10, they naturally want to play at being him. The Alien figurines are always popular which is why we continue to release new characters but, for special occasions, the Rustbucket Playset is unbelievable.

Gearing up for the fourth season, what can retailers expect from Ben 10 in 2019? Ben 10 is one of very few action figure properties that grew last year, our constant engagement strategy with fans is working and we have some great new products lined up for 2019. Retailers can expect new figurines based on new Aliens, a revamped version of the Omnitrix and a very special playset which is amazing the tester kids didn’t want to give it back!

It was the 20th anniversary of Cartoon Network’s The Powerpuff Girls in 2018. Can we expect to see them at this year’s show?

How important is it to have real quality toy partnerships and to share values and understand one another’s brands? Partnership is the crucial word here. If you work well together the products developed are so much better and relevant for the end user.

Is Turner always looking to work with new licensee partners and what qualities do you look for?

We love it when companies approach us with The Powerpuff Girls their new product ideas. Our continue to work well programmes are often edgy, for us with fashion‘The Powerpuff Girls so we’re broadminded and focused collaborations enjoy working with likeminded continue to work well for and initiatives, like our partners who are open to new partnership with the us with fashion-focused challenging the perceptions of British Association Of what licensing can be. collaborations and Gymnastics, that position initiatives’ the characters as ambassadors of female And lastly, what should empowerment. Daisy Street will be crazy times going on with our outlandish launching a second wave of products and we have Rick and Morty products and retail activations. a very special event planned for London Fashion Week in February.

What are the hottest pre-school and school-age properties you think will spark licensed toys and products for 2019 and beyond? Most people seem to be playing it very safe and only backing existing properties but there are some great new properties out there. Our new series Apple & Onion has resonated really well with viewers and is definitely one to watch.

Which companies are you collaborating with for some of your top-selling shows? The Playmates Ben 10 range continues to grow and they are great to work with, we’re also very excited to be working with Spin Master again on Bakugan.

Carton board is strong, stiff and rigid, perfect for use with packaging lighter weight items, but due to the flexibility of this substrate, we find a broad range of applications. Display your products in outstanding quality printed packaging, or even wrap your standard packaging with a printed sleeve this material has lots of uses. We are able to manufacture self-erect cases, single line glued or multipoint crash lock cartons for fast assembly. For a more luxurious finish, it can be embossed or have foil blocking applied. NEWS Toucan play at that game! Juratoys’ Sales & Marketing Manager Michelle Probert has got jungle fever on stand B121. “The brand new Kaloo Jungle range is completely different to our usual ranges,” she says. “We’re going over and above with this one when it comes to trends.” Michelle shows off Alban The Toucan, just one of the nine products in the range.

The Daily News caught up with Steven Russell, Marketing Manager at Jumbo Games, stand E46, on what the company will be showing at the Fair What are you most looking forward to at London Toy Fair 2019? It’s always great to catch up with our customers, puzzle artists, licensors and agencies to present our new products and plans for the year ahead. We spend a lot of time planning for the show, so being able to then let the products do the talking is great, and we love seeing everyone’s responses.

From one show to another Fresh from last year’s Greenhouse success, inventor Euan Lind (left) has partnered with Learning Resources’ MD Dennis Blackmore with Stems, the exciting flexible construction toy. “I met him last year, liked the product and we’re delighted to be distributing worldwide for him,” says Dennis, on stand D36.

“Coding products are trending” With coding recently introduced into the National Curriculum, “coding products are currently a massive trend”, says Sarah Dayus, National Account Manager at Great Gizmos, stand G20, which this Toy Fair unveils its exciting new Code A Maze product. This electronic coding game teaches kids aged threeplus how to code by visually interpreting sequences and programming them to guide the robot across the board. “A lot of research and development has gone into this product and there’s just nothing like it on the market,” says Sarah. “We’ve had such a great response.”

It’s a small world Fiesta Crafts’ MD Andrew Bacon shows off the new Discover The World Game. “It’s a great way to learn where all the different countries are,” he says. Learn more about the game and Fiesta Crafts’ latest Oi! licence range over on stand D2.

Dobble is the card game of speedy observation from Asmodee UK, stand E109 E109, which sees players racing to spot the only matching symbol between two cards. It can be taught in seconds – strongly rewarding in-store demonstration – and played by all ages and experience. In 2018 it passed the one million copies sold in the UK milestone, and NPD rated it the country’s biggest-selling game of the year.

How would you sum up the last trading year? It’s had its ups and downs, but we’ve seen strong growth across all our Adult Puzzles brands which matches the growth of the adult puzzle market last year. The children’s puzzle market has been more challenging, as the retail landscape seems to be consistently changing. But we’re confident that, with new properties such as Moon & Me, this is sure to pick up again. Tell us a little about your stand this year, anything new and exciting? We’ll be showcasing 60 brand-new Adult Puzzles, and buyers will be able to get the first look at our 2019 Wasgij and Falcon Christmas Puzzles. Name one hero product that you and your team are very excited about? Our Moon & Me range of puzzles. Toy Fair is where we will be unveiling them to the trade and we are all very excited to be presenting them to retail, days before the launch of the first season on CBeebies! And finally, your brew of choice? Coconut latte.

An oldie but a goodie! It may well be one of the oldest toy companies in the country, but Casdon, stand E30, is hot when it comes to introducing the latest products, and this Toy Fair is no exception. With the Dyson licence under its belt for the past 20 years, Casdon is unveiling the brand-new Dyson Cord-Free this Toy Fair, a children’s version of the real Dyson Cord-Free, adding to its other three Dyson designs. “The Dyson licence has been very successful for both partners and we’ve had a fantastic reaction to the Cordless mini,” says Paul Cassidy, Chairman, who’s been with Casdon for more than 50 years.
