REARVIEW MIRROR: A look at the history of Vero Beach’s Heritage Center We’ve all seen the pretty white building on 14th Avenue across from the old Indian River County Courthouse. But did you know who built it and when, and that it’s on the National Register of Historic Places? Architect William Garns moved in 1933 from Indianapolis to Vero Beach, where he had visited during the land boom of the 1920s. He built the courthouse, and completed the plans for the community building in 1935. It measured 90 x 42 feet, was made of wood and stucco and cost $3,650 to construct.

It became a popular location for social activities. During World War II, it was an entertainment center for servicemen. Many couples met there for the first time. Today, the historic building at 2140 14th Ave. serves the same purpose – a place for the community to gather for various types of classes and events. – Source: “A History of Indian River County” by Sidney Johnston and William Adams.

LEMMON DROPS: Embarking on a new ‘ad’ venture Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Charlie Crist and Rick Scott to hug it out: again. • Hello Glad we’ve reconnected after all these … well, I

guess it has been only a few weeks since my final column appeared in the Press Journal. (That’s not even enough time for your heart to grow fonder, is it?) Well, I missed you. In my farewell column back on Sept. 18, I said it was time to try something different. I had grown tired of the tumultuous changes in the newspaper industry, and didn’t feel comfortable about the final dozen years of my working life. So, I decided to leave a very secure job (it would have been smooth sailing for the foreseeable future), with good benefits, to start my own business. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Lemmon Lines! Let’s plan on getting together every week, shall we?

Dolly

I’ll be here 52 weeks a year. Even when you’re out of town, you’ll be just 15 keystrokes away – LemmonLines.com.

What is Lemmon Lines? It’s a •newsletter, not a newspaper.

I don’t have a staff of reporters covering the “news of the day.” I want Lemmon Lines to be a Russ Lemmon “fun” read. An extension of my column, if you will. The “Just Wondering” feature on Page 3 is a good example. I’ve always wondered about the top bestsellers of all-time at the Vero Beach Book Center, and now I know … and so do you. I hope you’ll enjoy the “Top 500 countdown” on Page 7. Yes, hope, because it’s going to be a weekly staple for the next three-plus years! Perhaps the songs listed each

week will trigger a memory for you. If you liked my column in the Press Journal, you’ll like Lemmon Lines. If you didn’t like my column, you’re not going to like it. As AT&T says in its TV commercials, it’s not complicated.

In addition to being a place for my column to call •home, I want Lemmon Lines to be the best advertising

vehicle for local businesses. This is a fact: Without the support of the advertisers, there would be no Lemmon Lines. They made it happen. That’s the “business” side of what I’m doing. So, every so often I’ll ask you to support our advertisers, whenever possible. (I know it’s not going to be possible for some of you to support certain political candidates! But you know what I mean.) It’s important for these businesses to know their advertising dollars were spent wisely.

up with the sketch of yours truly, you ask? It’s •the What’s work of Julia Carter, one of the artists at Tiger Lily in downtown Vero Beach. (Thank you, Julia!)

Bet you’re wondering about the “Dolly” ad at the •bottom of page 4. Ask Jim DiMarzo.

The ad has special meaning and is fuel in my tank.

advertising sales trivia regarding the debut issue •of Some Lemmon Lines.

First “official” sales call: Binafif Aluminum. (See Josh Binafif’s ad at the top of page 4. The story of his business is fascinating.) First ad sold: Bob Evans. (I couldn’t ask for a better goodwill gesture by my favorite restaurant.)

Finally, thank you for reading this publication. Here’s •hoping you make it a weekly habit.
