DAVID BAZINET’S PHOTO TREKS: Rundown comfort
Story behind the photo: While out exploring recently, I came across a group of old cottages near the environs of the former World War II airbase ... now Vero Beach Regional Airport. It was just after sunrise and the light was diffuse when I noticed this old couch on this rundown back porch. More photos from David:

end of the year. So, he has spent the past several months trying to unload the collectibles he has accumulated during his life. He has sold all of his toy trains, and most of his NASCAR-related memorabilia is gone. But he’s been unable to find a buyer for his prized possession – the 1,125 mini-bottles of liquor he has in a display case. It’s definitely an eye-catcher. The timing is perfect for his move … because the display case is filled to capacity. “I can’t find room for another (mini-bottle),” he said. “They are three deep in a few places.” He’s been unable to find a buyer. He puts the value at $3,000.

I suggested he try to sell the collection on eBay, but he doesn’t own a computer and doesn’t feel comfortable doing a financial transaction in cyberspace. Finding a good home for the mini-bottles is important to him – he started the collection 56 years ago when he lived Russ Lemmon in Brewster, New York. A server at a restaurant gave him a mini-bottle, and so it began. I’ve known Richard, 83, for years and have mentioned him in several columns. The first time I wrote about him was about our mutual “hobby” – that is, we both go to Bob Evans restaurants and keep track of the number. He has left me in the dust, as I’ve been stuck at 135 for a few years. When Richard sells his house (he has a buyer waiting), he plans on taking another driving tour of the United

There will be a “Thrift Store Shuffle” taking place soon in Vero Beach. First up is the opening of the new A Second Chance thrift store (affiliated with the Hope for Families Center). The new store, scheduled to open this week, is located next to Sandy’s Furniture on U.S. 1. Just so you know, A Second Chance is keeping open its original store on Old Dixie Highway. Then, Goodwill is expected to start construction of a new store on U.S. 1. It’ll be located south of the new Wawa. Goodwill will be moving out of its store in the Kmart Plaza in 2017. Replacing Goodwill in the Kmart Plaza will be a thrift store operated by The Salvation Army. A round of applause, please, for Mary Snyder, who is

retiring as the director of the county’s library system. Her final day is Nov. 30. A job well done, Mary. Thanks to Paul Ettari for letting me know about the visitindianriver.com ad on the New York Post’s website. (Visitindianriver.com is a tourism website created by the Indian River Chamber of Commerce.) I’ve had a few people ask about the land being cleared along U.S. 1 between Aviation Boulevard and the Center for Advanced Eye Care. Apparently, nothing is going to be built there. According to Tim McGarry, the director of planning for the city of Vero Beach, the clearing was done at the request of the eye clinic. The Salvation Army’s annual “Red Kettle Drive” is underway. As you know, it’s a great cause. Some “Red Kettle” trivia: The location that raises the most money is the Publix in the Miracle Mile area (approximately $16,000 last year), followed by the Walmarts in Vero Beach and Sebastian (about $12,000 apiece last year).

Top 500 countdown
Fun facts
Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.
Indian River County’s estimated population in 2015 was 147,919. That represents an increase of 7.2 percent from the 2010 population of 138,028.
167. “You’re Still the One” (1998) Shania Twain Memory: A song that has special meaning for any couple married for at least a decade. 166. “Instant Karma! (We All Shine On)” (1970) John Lennon Memory: This was the first solo single by a member of the Beatles to sell a million copies. 165. “Solsbury Hill” (1978) Peter Gabriel Memory: Although this song never cracked the Billboard’s Top 40, it’s been a part of a few movie soundtracks.
Meanwhile, the population of Florida grew by 7.5 percent during that same period (going from 18.8 million in 2010 to 20.2 million in 2015).
All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com
