REARVIEW MIRROR: A look at the history of the Vero train depot The Vero depot is one of Indian River County’s oldest buildings. Passenger train stations were built in Sebastian and Gifford first, but Vero’s still remains and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Sebastian’s Florida East Coast Railway depot was the first of the large stations in the county; it was completed in 1894. It burned before it could be rehabilitated and preserved. In 1893 and 1894, the FEC Railroad was extending its railway at about the time Gifford, just north of Vero Beach, was established. A “shed” was put in Vero at Commerce Avenue between 18th and 19th streets, and painted bright yellow (as the restored building is painted today). But Vero residents who wanted to catch a train had to go to Gifford, and if they wanted to detrain in Vero, they had to get off in Gifford. By 1898, the FEC had built small wood-framed depots at

Roseland, Sebastian, Wabasso, Woodley (established with a general store and named for a Georgia plantation near present day Winter Beach), Gifford and Vero. Most were flag stations, stopping there only if a passenger requested the stop. Landowner F. Charles Gifford complained to the Florida Railroad Commission in 1903 about the deplorable condition of the Vero flag station. Later that year the railroad built a new passenger station. The FEC expanded and improved it in 1916 and again in 1936. The Indian River County Historical Society bought the building in 1983 and moved it to 14th Avenue, where it was rehabilitated and converted into the society’s headquarters. – Sources: “A History of Indian River County” by Sidney Johnston and William Adams; “Florida’s Hibiscus City: Vero Beach” by J. LEMMON DROPS: This highly unusual business partnership seems like a perfect match
a most unusual business partnership. • IIt’s She is 89 years old, and he’s 20.
Lila Jeanne Bussey and Eric Behymer aren’t related, but they certainly think alike. Both are natural-born sellers. Buy low, and sell it for a profit. Lila did it for years with houses (she owned a real estate agency in Missouri for 32 years), and now she’s doing it with furniture from estates. “Buying and selling is in your blood,” Lila said. “Either you like it, or you don’t.” Eric has experience beyond his years. At age 14, for example, he bought a Ford Bronco and then resold it. He’s now very active selling items on Craigslist. Sometime before the end of the month, Lila and Eric will open a new business called Estate Treasures. They’ll sell mostly furniture and antiques from estates.
You might call Estate Treasures a cousin of her other business, Lila Jeanne’s Estate Sales. No wonder she’s called “Lila Jeanne, The Selling Machine.” Did I mention she’ll turn 90 on April 2? She ranks among the most energetic octogenarians I’ve ever met. I don’t use this term often, but Russ Lemmon she is a firecracker. Meanwhile, if I had to describe Eric in one word, it would be “driven.” He’s currently working three jobs and attending Indian River State College. They’re hoping to open the store before Christmas, but the odds are against them. There’s hundreds of items they have to price. Lila’s boyfriend, Al Lehman, will be helping out. The store’s location: 3200 43rd Ave., Suite 10. It’s about a mile north of State Road 60, just west of the airport.

I can’t wait to see how this business partnership develops. They seem to be a perfect match. Richard Granata told me about a sign along 20th Avenue that I had to check out. “I’ve seen signs for lost dogs and lost cats before, but this was a first,” he said. “It’s definitely a sign for 2014.” The sign was seeking help to find a lost drone. (You can see the sign on my Facebook page.) Back in Issue 4, I mentioned Vero Beach actors John Houx and Jim Daly imitated art with life by meeting every Tuesday for breakfast. In October, they were the only two people on stage for the production of “Tuesdays with Morrie” at the Pineapple Playhouse in Fort Pierce Good news: The Vero Beach Theatre Guild board has given Houx and Daly the green light to perform “Tuesdays with Morrie” on April 10-12. Daly says he and Houx will have to continue meeting every Tuesday morning now. “It’ll be a working breakfast,” he quipped.

• If you’re looking for a last-minute Christmas gift, you
might want to consider a calendar from Indian River by Air. (John Massung has some awe-inspiring aerial photo in the 2015 calendar.) Check out indianriverbyair.com. Some interesting sports trivia, compliments of Curtis Carpenter: “With the trade of Matt Kemp, A.J. Ellis is the only remaining player on the Los Angeles Dodgers who also played for the Vero Beach Dodgers.” In driving to see the aforementioned “lost drone” sign, on 20th Avenue, I came across somewhat of a relic – in front of one house was a receptacle for delivery of the Miami Herald. It’s been more than a decade since The Herald offered home delivery in these parts. I love listening to Christmas music on the radio, and a “what are the odds?” moment happened last Tuesday around 3:10 p.m.: “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” was playing on both 97.1 FM and 99.3 FM. At least it wasn’t my least favorite Christmas song of alltime, “Santa Baby”!

Top 500 countdown
Fun facts
Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.
473. “The Flame”
(1988) Cheap Trick Memory: This one doesn’t fit the Cheap Trick mold. Like a good ballad, it has you singing along before the end.
Life expectancy in Indian River County ... For females, it’s 82.8 years. (That’s an increase of 4.0 years since 1985.) For males, it’s 76.5 years. (That’s an increase of 4.6 years since 1985.) – Source: ISource: The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.
472. “I Feel Fine”
(1964) The Beatles Memory: One of the first great “air guitar” songs.
471. “Tragedy”
(1979) Bee Gees Memory: With this song, released before the start of a U.S. tour (yes, I purchased tickets), the Bee Gees were at the peak of their popularity. All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
