REARVIEW MIRROR: A look at the history of Wabasso In the late 1880s, boat-builder George Sears of Iowa and bee-keeper George W. King moved into Lowanna, a settlement north of Vero that later was named Wabasso. Today, Wabasso is about 2.4 square miles around U.S.1, State Road 510 and Old Dixie Highway. Its estimated population is between 600 and 900. There are a few stories about how Wabasso got its name, which to this day remains uncertain. Here’s what’s been said: • In 1893, Florida East Coast Railway vice president J.R. Parrott selected the name from the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem “The Song of Hiawatha.” Longfellow translated the word to mean both “rabbit” and “The North.” • Guale Indians from Ossabaw Island near Savannah Island, Georgia, brought the name of their homeland – which spelled backward is “Wabasso” – with them when they migrated to Florida’s east coast in the 18th century.

• The aforementioned George Sears came up with the name. Whatever the source for the name, records are clear that John R. Leatherman applied to the U.S. Department of the Treasury for a post office at Wabasso in March 1897. He served as the village’s first postmaster. Although several settlers of Wabasso were Georgians, none can be placed in or near Savannah. So, it’s unclear who named the community or whether it came from the rabbit of “Hiawatha” or transposition of Ossabaw Island, Georgia. But since then, it’s had continuous occupation. A small subdivision was platted in the 1890s and King sold most of his land in 1896 to Leatherman, who kept a 10-acre homestead in the village until 1902. The FEC maintained substantial land along the riverfront into the early 20th century. – Source: “A History of Indian River County” by Sidney P. Johnston and William Adams

LEMMON DROPS: This business is the antithesis of ‘corporate’ As I’ve come to discover, the great thing about owning a •business is the freedom to do whatever you want.
I grew tired of the like-minded environment that is promoted at corporate-owned newspapers. I’m not “robot” material. J & J Auto Works is the antithesis of “corporate” – and that’s why I love going there. John Licardi and Joe Krauss are brothers-in-law who have been in business together since they lived in Long Island. Joe’s wife, Carol, runs the office. I took my car there for an oil change recently, and sitting in the waiting area was truly delightful. I mean, how many auto-repair places do you know that sell clothes? As Carol and Joe explained, their daughter, Jasmine, now a freshman at Stetson University, is trying to sell some of
her clothes because she needs some spending money. Clothes aren’t the only thing that grab your attention in the waiting area of J & J Auto Works, located on Old Dixie Highway about a mile north of Oslo Road. Also for sale is a copy of the book “Liars, Cheats, & Thieves” by Kris O’Brian. (That’s Brian Heady’s pen Russ Lemmon name, in case you didn’t know.) You know how you’re not supposed to talk about politics and religion? Joe and Carol are huge Tea Party supporters and once drove to Washington, D.C., for a big rally. On the counter is a brochure for Grace Baptist Church with a note that says, “This is the church J&J attends.” Want to sign a petition to stop All Aboard Florida? You’ll find one on the counter. corporate-owned auto repair shop. Oh, did I mention the pinball machine in the waiting area? Joe says they’ll fire it up for any customer who wants to play. With all of the mental energy being expended to stop All Aboard Florida, this is one of those “I kid you not”-type names for a business: All Aboard Therapy. It’s located in a strip plaza at U.S. 1 and 45th Street. In this space last week, I wrote about the Citizen’s Academy being offered by the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office. Lois Cappelen, the Christmas decorator extraordinaire at C.J. Cannon’s, told me she once attended the Citizen’s Academy for four years in a row. “I learned something new every year,” she said. Sgt. Eric Flowers, who handles public affairs for the Sheriff’s Office, says his wife, father and mother have all attended the Citizen’s Academy. It’s that good, folks. Best of all, it’s free.

To sign up for the 11-week course that starts Jan. 14, call 978-6317. Did you see the list of most popular bagels on page 3? Got to admit, I was surprised my staple – cinnamon-raisin – placed so low. (My other favorite, blueberry, didn’t even make the Top 10 on one list!) In our annual Christmas letter to family and friends, we told them about the launch of Lemmon Lines and encouraged them to check out the website. One of my wife’s former co-workers did just that. “Checked out Lemmon Lines and love it,” said Jane Broadhurst, who lives in Washington State. “It’s as comfortable to get acquainted with as an old shoe.” Hmmm. May have to incorporate that in a marketing slogan. Good workers are hard to find. Just ask Garrett Property Management owner Jimbo Morris, who has hired more than 80 people since June. Some employees didn’t last long. “Everybody wants a job,” he said, “but no one wants to work.”

464. “Hanging by a Moment”
In Indian River County, there were 60,176 occupied housing units in 2010. Of those, 45,026 were owner-occupied housing units and 15,150 renter-occupied housing units.
(2001) Lifehouse Memory: Lifehouse had the potential to become another Goo Goo Dolls or Matchbox Twenty, but fell short.

463. “Carry On My Wayward Son”
(1977) Kansas Memory: Nothing says “college years” like this one! It would make my Top 20 for best openings of a song.
462. “The Sign”
(1993) Ace of Base Memory: In the beginning, I had a hard time understanding the lyrics ... but that didn’t stop me from singing along. All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
