REARVIEW MIRROR: A look at the history of the Sebastian Inlet Some inlets are nature-made, others made by man. The Sebastian Inlet was made over and over, by man. Commercial fishing and oysters were quick money for people living along the river in Sebastian, so they banded together in 1866 to dig an inlet from the river to the ocean for access to more marine life. It was the first of seven efforts. Volunteers dug a ditch by hand across quarter-milewide land. However, Gibson’s Cut – named for ship captain David Gibson, who organized it – failed. In 1895, another group tried to open a canal, but a storm closed the gap. Still, the people of Sebastian were determined to have an inlet. In 1905, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers first examined an inlet’s feasibility at Sebastian because recreational boating had grown. Pioneer Charles W. Sembler used a dredge from 1914 to 1919 trying to open a channel so fishermen could extend their catches and there’d be drainage during the rainy

season. But the cut would fill at each tide change. Roy Couch of Melbourne started the Sebastian Inlet Association and appealed to the Florida Legislature for help; the Sebastian Inlet District Commission was created in 1918. He and others pushed through a bill starting the Sebastian Inlet Taxing District in 1919 to pay for work to keep it open. By 1924, the inlet opened at its current location and small jetties were constructed to help slow beach erosion. It closed during World War II. It was permanently blasted open in 1947 and has been open since. Dredging and jetty work continued each decade. Work began in December to separate rock and sand dredged earlier in 2014. The rock will be used in the Sebastian Inlet State Park for road and parking areas, and some of the sand will restore beaches and dunes. – Sources: Sebastianinletdistrict.com; “Florida’s Hibiscus City, Vero Beach,” by J. LEMMON DROPS: The world would be a better place if people picked up after their dogs Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the hype to build for Super Bowl XLIX: Dog owners are my kind of people. Except for those who let their pets do their business on the beach … and then walk away without picking it up. Come on, people! A section of the annual report by the Vero Beach Lifeguard Association took irresponsible dog owners to task – and rightfully so. “Patrons bringing dogs on the beach is a significant problem,” the report said. “It is observed that a large percentage of owners do not clean up after their dogs. “Continued defecation by dogs is unpleasant and a health hazard for sunbathers.” Ya think? Most dog owners I know are responsible. They pick up after their pets. But, like anything else, it takes only a few bad owners to ruin it for others.
•
You have to wonder what goes through the mind of people who don’t pick up after their dog when they’re walking on the beach. How can they possibly justify it? Did you know Sebastian and Minneapolis are the finalists for the site of the 2015 Elite Football League draft? OK, it’s not that big of Russ Lemmon a deal – I’m an owner in the EFL (go Sebastian Swordfish!) and nominated the city after a funny email exchange between the league’s co-commissioner and Will Collins, the general manager of Capt Hiram’s resort. It’s a long story, but Sebastian was featured in the EFL’s weekly newsletter, which is written by the co-commissioner, Jim Coghlin. He lives in Canada and got his information about Sebastian off of the Internet.

Anyway, thinking Collins would get a kick out of the Capt Hiram’s reference, I forwarded the newsletter to him. He proceeded to offer Coghlin a gift certificate as an incentive to make an actual trip – as opposed to a fantasy trip – to Sebastian. (If you want to see the EFL’s ridiculously extensive newsletter, let me know and I’ll email it to you.) The EFL draft is held every April. About 10 guys usually attend. Last year, it was held in Charleston, South Carolina. Don’t you wish we could blink our eyes and the construction on U.S. 1 (south of Oslo Road), 66th Avenue and, now, Old Dixie Highway (north of 53rd Street) would be over? At least the four-laning of Oslo is complete. The things you learn while talking with business owners: Garrett Property Management is named after the son of owner Jimbo Morris. I figured someone with a last name of Garrett previously owned it, and Jimbo just kept the name. Garrett, 16, works full-time during the summer and on weekends during the school year.
• •
Jimbo recalled the time he told his son that he would hire him to work for Garrett Property Management one day. “Why would I want to do that?” Garrett told his dad. “I already own the company.” Want to take what is sure to become a historical photo? The Hess gas station at the corner of U.S. 1 and 41st Street is the last one left in Indian River County. (It won’t be converting to a Speedway station, like the one in Sebastian did. But the Hess name will go away eventually and the station will switch to another brand of gas.) Al Critzer loves coffee more than anyone I know. I mean, the guy has five tattoos – count ’em, five – related to coffee! When we met for breakfast at Bob Evans, I told him that my wife and I usually drink Folgers “Black Silk” at home. Al was not impressed. “I sometimes receive that as a ‘gag’ gift,” he said. Ouch!

Top 500 countdown
Fun facts
Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.
458. “I Just Want to be Your Everything”
(1977) Andy Gibb Memory: A feel-good song that I associate with driving home from college on the weekends. Ah, good times.
457. “Escapade”
(1990) Janet Jackson Memory: Without the video to accompany it, this song wouldn’t be in the Top 500.
456. “The Way It Is”
(1987) Bruce Hornsby and the Range Memory: I love to play “air guitar” when a song calls for it ... and this one allowed me to polish my “air piano” skills. All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
