REARVIEW MIRROR: A look at the history of Oslo Oslo, a few miles south of Vero, grew from Florida’s east coast Scandinavian colony movement. Between 1895 and 1910, railroad businessman Henry Flagler organized and promoted ethnic agricultural colonies. Handbills in Danish and Swedish on steamers and trains out of New York advertised large land tracts for sale for growing fruits and vegetables. Scandinavians, many of them recent immigrants and cultivating prairie land in the upper Midwest, came to Florida and eventually created scattered colonies at Boynton, Hallandale, Linton, Dania and White City. But the colony movement began at Oslo. The first Scandinavian immigrants were the Helseths, Norwegians who had been in Minnesota. Ole O. Helseth came to the area south of Vero in 1896 and named it the village of Oslo for his native capital. His brother John Helseth a year earlier organized a settlement at Viking (current Indrio) and grew pineapples.

Within a few years, Ole Helseth, a carpenter, helped establish a post office in 1898 and railroad flag stop at Oslo. Axel Hallstrom, from Sweden, came to Oslo in 1904 and planted 100,000 pineapple plants. Competition from Cuba diverted his interests to planting citrus groves and investing in banks. In 1910, he bought land on Old Dixie Highway in Oslo where he built a red brick home between 1913 and 1923, and lived there with his daughter, Ruth. His wife Emily died in 1908. The house, at 1723 Old Dixie Highway, was bequeathed to the Indian River County Historical Society after Ruth’s death in 1999. Norwegian brothers Andrew and Strander Eriksson spent their time fishing commercially in the Indian River. Andrew moved to Oslo after his brother died, and homesteaded on land behind Axel Hallstrom’s. Oslo was no longer a village on the postal route in 1919, when all service transferred to Vero. – Sources: “A History of Indian River County” by Sidney P. LEMMON DROPS: Nolte plans to run for a 10th term in 2016 Eight bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Budweiser’s Super Bowl commercial: I love listening to people “in the know” speculate about who’s running for a particular office. When I met Ted Pankiewicz for coffee two weeks before the 2014 election, he was already mapping out 2016. The key to the dominos falling into place, he said, is David Nolte. If Nolte doesn’t run for re-election as Property Appraiser, he said, then that really opens things up. He predicted a current county commissioner then would run to succeed Nolte, thereby creating an opening on the commission – which, in turn, would attract several candidates. And so on, and so on … With two candidates having announced they’re running for the seat held by term-limited State Rep. Debbie Mayfield, the wheels for the August 2016 primary are already in motion. So, I figured now would be a good time to ask Nolte

about his intentions. “Right now, my plans are to run for re-election,” he said. “I’ve told people who are close to me that I’m definitely running unless something happens.” Health-wise, all systems are a “go” for Nolte. He was first elected as Property Appraiser in 1980. (“The same year as Russ Lemmon Ronald Reagan,” he’s quick to say.) If re-elected in 2016, it would make 10 election victories in a row for Nolte. He was 37 when elected in 1980, and he’ll be 73 the next time he runs. “I’ve tried a whole bunch of hobbies, but nothing really excites me like coming into work,” he said. Nolte did offer an asterisk of sorts regarding his 2016 plans. “It is awfully early,” he said.

As of last week, the only candidate to have filed to run for Property Appraiser in 2016 was Ruben Bermudez. In the neighborhood where the Lemmons live, mail was delivered at 8:55 p.m. one day last week. Which prompted me to check the U.S. Postal Service’s motto: “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” Gloom of night? Check. Swift completion of their appointed rounds? Sorry, can’t put a checkmark by that one! Two years ago, a rather humorous dynamic took place in Vero Beach: The first night of “Gospel Fest” at the airport was also opening night for the risqué “Sexpot” exhibit at the Flametree Clay Art Gallery. Well, it appears “Sexpot” is going solo in 2015. The pottery exhibit, restricted to those age 21 and over, will open Feb. 6 – the date of the next Downtown Gallery Stroll. record $110,515 in its annual Red Kettle campaign during the holiday season. That was an increase of more than $12,000 from the previous year, according to John Corapi, director of development. Did you see the list of Indian River County’s top employers on page 3? Recognize all 15 entities? Even the one at No. 10? I’ll be honest – I had never heard of that company. Like many of you, the Lemmons pay for an annual “membership” at Sam’s Club. Basically, we do it for the gas. Which is why this makes no sense to me: Last week, regular unleaded was selling for $1.99 at the Sam’s Club in Vero Beach and $1.86 at its sister company, Walmart, in Sebastian. (The latter, of course, has no membership fee.) The LemmonLines.com website reached a pretty neat milestone last week – recording its 4,000th unique visitor. Remember, the current issue is always available online. Thanks for reading! Super Bowl XLIX prediction: Patriots XXXI, Seahawks XXVII.

Overlooked cinematic gems As owner of a used DVD shop, I occasionally find fairly obscure movies that turn out to be quite good. Here are three of them:

Top 500 countdown

Fun facts

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

455. “Stand Back”

(1983) Stevie Nicks Memory: Stevie was a hit machine in the early 1980s. Another example of a video adding to a song’s “staying power.”

454. “Seasons in the Sun”

(1974) Terry Jacks Memory: A monster hit on WLS in Chicago shortly after I got my driver’s license. Seemed like they played it every 10 minutes.

453. “I’ll Be”

(1998) Edwin McCain Memory: This is one of those songs I could listen to five times in a row ... and it keeps getting better. All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
