REARVIEW MIRROR: A look at the history of the Robert C. Spillman Memorial Highway Many of us have seen it, and wondered about it. The road sign just north of Beachland Boulevard reads “Robert C. Spillman Memorial Highway.” It’s on State Road A1A. There’s also a raised plaque – a memorial of sorts – on the Indian River County side of the Sebastian Inlet Bridge, next to the entrance to Sebastian Inlet State Park. It declares the same name for the state road within the county, as designated by the 1965 Florida Legislature. Who is this man who “dedicated and gave his life in service to his community” (as the memorial reads)? He died 18 days after his 35th birthday, on Aug. 16, 1963. Robert C. Spillman was a Vero Beach banker, also a pilot, and his definition of community service is a tragic one. In the early 1960s, a local developer, Fred Tuerk, owned a

lot of land on the barrier island and offered some of it to the state for a new university. Officials from the Board of Regents came to look at the land and had mixed feelings because of its remoteness and dense jungle. Still, education officials asked for a formal final proposal. With only days to spare, Spillman offered to hand carry the proposal to Tallahassee. On his return flight, his small plane crashed and he was killed. The barrier island didn’t get the college. Several years later, Tuerk sold his land to the developers of John’s Island. The highway in the county was named for Spillman under the 1965 state leadership of Gov. Haydon Burns, District 29 State Sen. Merrill P. Barber and District 29 State Rep. Arthur E. Karst, for Indian River County. – Source: Johnsislandrealestate.com

LEMMON DROPS: What a journey it’s been for two servers at Vincent’s Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the next winter blast up north:
• At some restaurants, there’s a constant turnover of servers. Not at Vincent’s. Elaine Huth started in 1979, and Sandy D’Amico has been there since 1981. Surely no serving tandem in Indian River County can top their combined 69 years at one place. (Sandy’s service is continuous, whereas Elaine moved back to Ohio in the 1970s but returned a year later.) I’ll tell you, they were a delight to interview. The obvious question: What’s the difference between today and when they first started? “Everybody is in a hurry,” Sandy said. “People don’t dine anymore.” I asked if they could pinpoint when everything changed, and they nodded their heads. “Electronic devices,” Elaine said.
They see people texting and checking the Internet on their smartphones. “Dinner is meant to be a time to reconnect,” Elaine said. They often see parents give electronic devices to their kids to keep them quiet. “The whole family unit is different now,” Sandy said. Elaine is 62, and Sandy is 53. Russ Lemmon The 103-seat restaurant in the Miracle Mile area, owned by Gaetano and Maria Amato, opened on June 12, 1978. So, these servers have been there almost from the beginning. “We all grew up together,” Elaine said. Both talked about how it’s like a big family. “It was a good journey – and still is,” Gaetano Amato said. “They run the show. I do not step on their toes.” Elaine and Sandy have worked at the same place for so long that they’re recognized in some unexpected places.

Elaine has been spotted at airports in Denver and Atlanta, while the same thing happened to Sandy in The Bahamas. “Don’t you work at Vincent’s?” they were asked. I posted a photo of Elaine and Sandy on LemmonLines.com and the Lemmon Lines page on Facebook. Perhaps you’ll recognize them as well. If you know of a server who has been at the same restaurant for more than 30 years, let me know. I might want to start an unofficial “Servers Hall of Fame.” What a feat by Elaine and Sandy. Simply incredible. Thanks to Paul Bristol for sending me the link to a story on USA Today’s website with the headline, “Easy beaches: Six hassle-free Florida escapes.” Vero Beach made the list. The writer provided an excellent overview of the area. There was a minor error regarding a street name, though. In the comments section, Melanie Smith set ’em straight. If you’d like to read the story, and see Melanie’s comment, there’s a link in the blog posts on LemmonLines.com. So I’m driving on Commerce Avenue and see a sign that

says “FLO RING” … OK, I’d better stop. I just realized most of the people reading this probably never have heard of the singer Flo Rida. Anyway, the folks at Indian River Flooring say they have a replacement “O” at the store, and will fix it at some point. “West Side Story” doesn’t open until Feb. 17, but it’s already made history at the Riverside Theatre. That is, the run of the show was extended by two weeks before it opened. “First time that’s ever happened,” said Oscar Sales, Riverside Theatre’s marketing director. “We have extended shows in the past, but on Opening Night or soon thereafter. Never this far in advance.” Restaurant trivia: Vincent’s is named after owner Gaetano Amato’s first-born son. Could the entrance to the still-under-construction Hampton Inn be any closer to the street? Seriously, check it out the next time you’re in the Miracle Mile area.
