LEMMON DROPS: Press Journal puts a target on its back by purposely using the word ‘in’ Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the next episode of “Better Call Saul”:

• Despite what you might hear about the state of the

newspaper industry nationally, Indian River County remains a thriving market. One of the best in the state, in fact. Ultimately, as is the case with any media entity (including Lemmon Lines), it’s all about advertising dollars. After all, that’s what pays the expenses. There’s a lot of pressure to generate enough advertising revenue to match profit projections. So, if you ever wonder why there is so much “bad blood” between the weekly sister papers (Vero Beach 32963 and Vero News) and the daily Press Journal, it’s all about convincing advertisers they are the best vehicle to spread the word about their business. Last month, the Press Journal launched an advertising campaign to let readers know it has “the largest local

news-gathering team in Indian River County.” In this week’s issues, 32963 and Vero News blasted the Press Journal – and I mean blasted – for making such a claim. The rift between these two news organizations boils down to the word “in” – as in, “the largest local Russ Lemmon news-gathering team in Indian River County.” No question, 32963 and Vero News have more journalists based in Indian River County. No question, the Press Journal has more reporters available to cover something in Indian River County. It’s just that most of those reporters are based in Stuart, and they’d have to drive an hour to get here. The Press Journal could reduce the level of venom from the competition by adjusting its ad to say it has “the

largest news-gathering team available to cover Indian River County.” Disclaimer: I am a former PJ columnist, and my wife works for Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers, which owns the Press Journal. Watching the weekly and daily newspapers go at it makes me glad I’m now in the newsletter business! So I’m sitting at a stoplight, and the car in front of me has bumper stickers from four – count ’em, four – elections. In chronological order: Rick Scott (governor) in 2010, Bill Posey (Congress) in ’12, Rick Scott (governor) in ’14 and, looking ahead, Ben Carson (president) in ’16. Speaking of 2016 elections, the field for the state representative race (District 54) is getting kind of crowded. Jay Kramer, a member of the Vero Beach City Council, and Dale Glading have entered the race, joining Erin Grall and Lange Sykes. Who knew, at this point, the race to succeed Debbie Mayfield – she can’t run because of term limits – would

attract more official candidates than the presidential race? Did you see the list of Riverside Theatre’s most-attended plays on page 3? Marketing director Oscar Sales says ticket sales for “West Side Story” have been so strong that it might pass “South Pacific” for the No. 2 spot. Bad news: Fillin’ n’ Chillin’ will be closing Feb. 28. (Never heard of it? It’s a bakery at the corner of Oslo Road and 20th Avenue. Check it out before it closes!) Good news: Sometime in March, it’ll reopen as Jennifer’s Bakery & Café at a different location – on westbound State Road 60 just east of the railroad tracks. Just want to give a shout-out to those who attended my speaking engagement last week at Vista Plantation. It was a lot of fun. Hopefully, you’ll remember to do the two things I stressed – get into the weekly habit of reading the current issue online and, of course, support our advertisers. (See the first item!) Top 500 countdown

Fun facts

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

446. “The First Cut is the Deepest”

(1977) Rod Stewart Memory: A hit during my college years, I remember liking this song a lot more when I learned Cat Stevens wrote it.

445. “Macarena”

(1996) Los Del Rio Memory: I’ll always associate this song with our wedding reception. The dancing on the wedding video is priceless!

444. “Wind Beneath My Wings”

(1982) Lou Rawls Memory: Most probably prefer the Bette Midler version. Not me. Would make my Top 10 for most “inspiring” songs. All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
