LEMMON DROPS: Grassroots program tries to get kids hooked on reading Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the “Cinderella” hype to subside:
• Sharon Letts isn’t trying to change the world. Instead,
she’s taking a one-kid-at-a-time approach. Let’s face it, trying to get kids hooked on reading is not an easy thing to do in today’s world. She helps run a family business – Treasure Coast Jewelers & Music (you know, the distinctive tropical-pink building on U.S. 1) – and sees kids drawn to the area where video games are sold. Last summer, she started a reading club of sorts at the store. Kids reading 12 books will receive a free video game or a free cupcake from Classic Cupcakes. In one of the back rooms at the store is a huge bookcase, built by her father, with more than 300 books – there’s something for every age group. Sharon calls her program “Books and Lollys” because
she has always given kids lollipops when they come into the store. (She knows “Lollys” isn’t the correct spelling, but she’s OK with it.) Now, she gives kids lollipops and a book. Sharon keeps track of each “Books and Lollys” participant with oldfashioned index cards. Russ Lemmon Christian Letts, 8, is her assistant. He is the son of Sharon’s nephew. Christian stamps every book that is checked out. “I have to stamp a lot of books on Monday,” said the second-grader at Osceola Magnet School. “My hand gets really tired. Luckily, I get to take breaks.” For Christian, who is the fourth generation working at the store, it beats sweeping the floor. Sharon is a voracious reader – she reads five to 10 books a week! This summer, she hopes to take “Books and Lollys”

outside the store. She’ll try to get involved with churches and some apartment buildings. “I just love to teach,” she said. “I love kids, and I love reading.” How would she like to spend her retirement years? “I’d like to ride around in a truck and give out books all day,” she said. Having been in the Indian River Mall many times in recent years, I can’t say I was shocked when I heard it was going to be put on the auction block in a foreclosure sale. It was a game-changer in terms of local development back in 1996, but indoor malls are now like dinosaurs. Speaking of dinosaurs, did you know NPR did a report on the Vero Man dig? Very cool. If you’d like a link to the 4 minute, 40 second story, send me an email. In this space last week I said I wasn’t going to do an out-of-state license plate count this year. (I did in March

I pull up to the stoplight at U.S. 1 and 12th Street, and the car in front of me has an Alaska tag. Thanks to readers Bill Gallagher and Marta Christjansen for their out-of-state plate reports. Both are very close to getting every state. So I wished Jeanne Gascoigne a happy 93rd birthday, and she responded with an email that made me chuckle. “Thank you for the birthday wishes! Only two more years to learn your No. 1 song.” Actually, the countdown will take closer to three years. Maybe I’ll time it so the No. 1 song is in the issue that coincidences with her 96th birthday. Knowing Tom Lowther has reached the age where he’s eligible to play softball with the Codgers, I asked him if he knew his batting average. “I don’t know,” he said, “but I do know I’ve hit 12 home runs.”
