LEMMON DROPS: Cultural Council wants everyone to know that ‘Arts Matter’ Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the University of Kentucky men’s basketball team to complete a perfect season:
• Attention, tourists: Did you know you have a “cultural
concierge” at your disposal? The Cultural Council of Indian River County wants to help you discover what we have to offer under the “Arts” umbrella. “The cultural arts are very, very important in this community,” said Barbara Hoffman, who has served as the council’s director since 2011. If you visit to the Cultural Council’s office at 2041 14th Ave. in downtown Vero Beach, you’ll see there’s no shortage of entertainment options available. The council’s Big Four: Vero Beach Museum of Art, McKee Botanical Gardens, Riverside Theatre and the Vero Beach Theatre Guild. But the “cultural concierge” – usually Peg Witte, an
administrative assistant – will try to arrange anything within reason. Need tickets to a performance by the symphony? It’s just a phone call (772-770-4857) away. Hoffman said someone recently called from another country wanting to arrange a shopping trip and a nice dinner. They made it happen. Russ Lemmon Of course, you don’t need to be a tourist to take advantage of the “cultural concierge.” Locals can use the service, too. As the Cultural Council’s marketing slogan says, “Arts Matter.” An indication that the economy is improving can be found in statistics from the Tax Collector’s Office. In December, the number of people purchasing a new vehicle or moving to the county and registering their vehicles was 19,728. Compare that to 17,453 in December ’13. Brenda Bradley, the office’s chief of staff, also noted a sharp

increase in the number of people purchasing hunting/fishing licenses – 300 in December vs. 182 the previous December. Gail Williams, the owner of Sunshine Furniture, bristles when she sees an article that states you don’t have to pay sales tax on Internet purchases. “That’s not true,” she said. “You do have to pay taxes.” As I told Gail, I did not know that was the case. (How about you? Did you know you have to pay a 6-percent tax when buying something on the Internet?) She showed me a letter Florida Department of Revenue sent to her. It wanted to collect the taxes due on an Internet purchase she made. “Brick-and-mortar businesses no longer need to fear the Internet,” she said. Tell me again why the main post office would want to clog up the pipeline, so to speak, by not opening until 9 a.m., effective April 1. (It currently opens at 8:30. I’m there every Monday before 9, and Van is a whiz at processing the 500 to 700 copies of Lemmon Lines I mail to various households.)

To those who will be in line after me starting in April, I apologize in advance! Rita Richter called with some good news: The Roselandbased group SOS Cookies – or, Send Our Soldiers Cookies – will receive a brief mention in the book “Be Safe, Love Mom: A Military Mom’s Stories of Courage, Comfort, and Surviving Life on the Home Front” by Elaine Lowry Brye. The book is set to be published March 31. So I crossed paths with Lila Jeanne Bussey outside the Carpet & Tile Warehouse, and she mentioned her 90th birthday is fast approaching. (Background: Lila Jeanne recently teamed up with 20-year-old Eric Behymer to start a new business called Estate Treasures.) Back in Issue 10, I described Lila Jeanne as a “firecracker” because she is one of the most energetic octogenarians I’ve ever met. “Woo hoo!” Lila Jeanne said about her upcoming milestone birthday. “If you think I’m not going to celebrate, you’re wrong.”

Overlooked cinematic gems As owner of a used DVD shop, I occasionally find fairly obscure movies that turn out to be quite good. Here are three of them:
Anna daydreams of a mysterious house, which she meticulously illustrates in her notebook. She begins to dream about the mystery house, and it’s even more mysterious occupant. However, when • Cheap Thrills (2013, NR, directed by E.L. Katz). the events in her dreams begin taking a foothold in What’s the worst thing you’d do for money? That reality, things take a turn for the worse. is the question asked, and answered in this indie • Wolfhound (2006, R, directed by Nikolay black comedy. Craig (Pat Healy) just lost his job Lebedev). Top 500 countdown Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.
431. “The Warrior”
(1984) Scandal Memory: In doing some research, I was surprised to learn this song hit No. 1 in Canada but made it only to No. 7 in the United States.
Fun facts Vero Beach’s population through the years …
1970: 11,908 1980: 16,176 1990: 17,350 2000: 17,705 2010: 15,252 2013 (estimate): 15,989 – Source: U.S. Census Bureau
430. “(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman”
(1967) Aretha Franklin Memory: A classic in every sense of the word. Several other artists have recorded this song, but Aretha’s version is still the best.
429. “Candida”
(1970) Dawn, featuring Tony Orlando Memory: It’s hard not to sing along with this song, even though I’ve never met anyone with the name of Candida. All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
