REARVIEW MIRROR: A look at the history of the Survivors’ & Salvaging Camp Just south of the Sebastian Inlet State Park on State Road A1A is the spot where about 1,500 men, women and children made camp along the barrier island after a hurricane destroyed their fleet of merchant ships in 1715. The group was part of the 11 or 12 ships carrying cargoes of gold and silver coins and other items from the American colonies to Spain. Spain used warships and forts to protect the treasure ships from marauding pirates on the sea, but nothing could protect them from hurricanes. The people survived the August disaster and reached the shore near where the 1715 Spanish Plate Fleet flagship sank. It’s where the Treasure Coast gets its name. They improvised shelters and gathered what they could for food. Indians were sent from St. Augustine to feed, protect and help the salvagers who used the campsite while working to

recover the valuable cargo from the sunken vessels. Still, many died of exposure and exhaustion. Archaeological work at the site over the years revealed they built storehouses for the recovered gold and silver. During the salvage operations, English pirate Henry Jennings drove off the guards and seized much of the recovered coins and took them to Jamaica. The majority, however, was regained and moved to Havana by the Spanish salvagers. Today nothing remains on the 300-foot strip of sandy beach and dune between Vero Beach and the Sebastian Inlet where the Spanish refugees landed but a dune covered with vegetation. The site of the 1715 Spanish Plate Fleet Survivors’ and Salvaging Camp is a National Historical Landmark. Robert McLarty, a retired Atlanta attorney who lived in Vero Beach, deeded a portion of the former campsite to the state for a park and museum, the McLarty Treasure Museum, built in 1970 at 13180 North S.R. A1A. – Sources:: flheritage.com; floridastateparks.org

LEMMON DROPS: Thank you, snowbirds, for what you do for the local economy Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the 2015 version of “One Shining Moment”:
• Easter marks the traditional end of “the season” in
these parts. I predict, after all of the tax revenue is calculated, this will be the most robust tourist season since the turn of the century. You could tell it was going to be a good one way back in December. As I’ve always said, I appreciate snowbirds because they bring a certain “energy” to the area. Without them, Riverside Theatre in Vero Beach wouldn’t have all of the first-rate plays it offers and Jay Leno wouldn’t have had two shows last weekend at the Sunrise Theatre in Fort Pierce. From late fall to early spring, Vero Beach is like a small big city. The rest of the year, it’s a big small city. More and more, though, we’re becoming a “year-round community.” In other words, an increasing number of
snowbirds are staying put. In talking with Jim Daly, a local Realtor, he believes the back-to-back harsh winters up north will lead to more prospective new residents doing some house-hunting here this summer. “The problem we’re having is, we don’t have enough listings,” he said. So, if you’ve been thinking of Russ Lemmon putting your house on the market, now might be a good time. I love hearing stories about how people ended up moving to Indian River County. For Steve Schwartz, owner of PDgo! Web Solutions, it was something as simple as a weekend stay at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort. If that doesn’t show the importance of making a first impression, I don’t know what does. (Steve is the subject of this week’s “Meet me at Table 51” feature on page 6.) Charlotte Snedeker made me laugh with the photo she

sent via email. She was sitting at a stoplight, and the car in front of her had a Hawaii license plate. (Good work, Charlotte!) By the way, in my unofficial out-of-state plate count this year, I saw tags from every state except Idaho, Montana and Utah. Activity is picking up inside the screech owl nest on veroscreecher.com. The first egg is expected to hatch this week. Then, as John Mapel reports, “the male will be bringing all those goodies that owls eat!” Watching what takes place in the nest is like taking a Nature 101 class. Note to the organizers of the annual Vero Beach Prayer Breakfast: You can do better than Phil Robertson as a speaker. Were you proud of the headline on the Huffington Post? That is, “Phil Robertson, ‘Duck Dynasty’ Star, Delivers Speech About Atheist Family Getting Raped and Killed.” Just because you set an attendance record doesn’t mean it

didn’t reflect poorly on our community. Tell me again why the School Board would offer to pay Mark Rendell $5,000 more a year than what Fran Adams currently receives as superintendent of Indian River County’s public schools. That is, in a word, disrespectful to Adams, who spent most of her career working for the local school district. In last week’s Top 500 song countdown, “Candida” was listed at No. 429. I noted I had never met anyone with the name of Candida. Louise Ozias, a snowbird from Massachusetts, wins an award for the most observant reader. She suggested I go to CenterState Bank and introduce myself to Candida Thornton. Candida was one of the tellers featured in an ad on the front page of the same issue! (My business checking account is at CenterState and Candida has been my teller several times before. I didn’t know her name.) What are the odds? Too funny.
