LEMMON DROPS: For some businesses, it’s the start of ‘hand-wringing’ season Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for traffic on U.S. 1 to start thinning out:

• Did you happen to notice on the front page which issue

this is? It’s No. 26 … which means this publication is six months old. Now I see why kids are always so proud to put a “half” on their age. It has been an incredibly satisfying six months. The feedback from readers has been immensely gratifying. The great thing is, more and more people are discovering Lemmon Lines each week. What’s important to understand about this free publication is, it wouldn’t exist without the support of advertisers. As I said way back in Issue 1, I want Lemmon Lines to be the best advertising vehicle for local businesses. Now that “the season” is mostly over, the confidence level of local businesses will go down a notch or two. For some,

it’s the start of hand-wringing season. That includes Lemmon Lines. If you enjoy reading this publication on a weekly basis, I have a favor to ask. Please take a look at the advertisers on these eight pages and see if there are any you can support. Think of it as a “circle of life”-kind of thing. Russ Lemmon You support advertisers, and, hopefully, they’ll continue to support this newsletter. In turn, Lemmon Lines will be there for you 52 weeks a year. Publishing Lemmon Lines has been a tremendous amount of fun. (Truth be told, I’m having the time of my life.) But, as a business owner, I’ve never been through a summer before. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a little scary. Did you know a production of the musical “Memphis”

opens this week at both the Riverside Theatre in Vero Beach and the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach? Call it a scheduling fluke. “I would say it’s as rare as winning the lottery, maybe even less,” said Oscar Sales, the marketing director at Riverside Theatre. “The companies that hold the rights to shows are very careful to make sure things like this don’t happen. Although the tour was coming to Kravis, their dates were not finalized when we were given permission to do the show.” I had a “What are the odds?”-type experience last week at Bob Evans. I was interviewing John Houx for the “Meet me at Table 51” feature on page 6. There at the exact same time was Steve Schwartz, the subject of last week’s “Meet me at Table 51.” It had been several weeks since I interviewed 8-year-old Christian Letts for a book club that Sharon Letts operates out of the family’s business, Treasure Coast Jewelers & Music (you know, the distinctive tropical-pink building on

U.S. 1 in Vero Beach). While dropping off a copy of last week’s issue at the store, Christian – a second-grader at Osceola Magnet School – was there. “Hello, Mr. Lemmon,” he said as I walked in the door. I was thoroughly impressed. What great business instincts! Barbara McElroy wants to know (and perhaps you do, too): Whatever happened to “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service”? In recent weeks, Barbara and her husband, Baron, have spotted barefoot people in a fast-food restaurant, a bank and a pharmacy. “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service” is not a law. Rather, it’s a decision left up to individual businesses. Here’s why the Lemmons won’t be renewing their “membership” to Sam’s Club when it expires in a few months: Gas prices are usually about a dime per gallon cheaper at the Walmart in Sebastian. Sorry, Sam’s Club, but that’s not right.

Top 500 countdown Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

425. “Greatest Love of All”

(1986) Whitney Houston Memory: If Whitney hadn’t recorded it, the George Benson version would have made the list.

Fun facts The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the population of Indian River County in 2014 was 144,755. That’s up from 138,239 in the official 2010 Census count. In 2000, the county’s population was 113,387. – Source: U.S. Census Bureau

424. “Everybody’s Free (to Wear Sunscreen)”

(1999) Baz Luhrmann Memory: If I had to describe it in a word, it would be “cool.” What great advice for high school graduates.

423. “Crazy on You”

((1976) Heart Memory: Would probably make my Top 10 list for best “air guitar” songs. All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
