LEMMON DROPS: Nolte hopes full-page ad convinces skeptics that he’s going to run for 10th term Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for hype to build for the Bruce Jenner interview:

• It’s not often you see a political ad more than a year

before an election. In this case, it was just shy of 17 months before the August 2016 primary. Property Appraiser David Nolte, who is running for a 10th term in ’16, placed a full-page ad in three publications owned by Vero Beach 32963 Media to let potential voters know he’s running for re-election. Why? “It squashes the rumor,” he said. Just last week, the rumor was incorporated into a prediction by someone who closely follows local politics (and is not affiliated with either campaign). This person predicted Nolte would announce in June that he has decided to not run for re-election. It’s hard to completely dismiss the rumor. Two reasons:

1) Wesley Davis, who opted against running for a fourth term on the County Commission, is going to be a very tough opponent; and 2) One couldn’t blame Nolte for not wanting to jeopardize his perfect record (9-0) in local elections. “There’s never been a thought of not running,” Nolte said last week. Russ Lemmon Nolte says his campaign paid $2,475 for the full-page ad that ran in Vero Beach 32963, Vero News and the Sebastian River News. He said he placed the ad in the Vero Beach 32963 Media publications because he wanted to catch the seasonal residents before they left the area. (He said he didn’t run an ad in the Press Journal because he considers its readers to be mostly year-round residents.) Davis said he wouldn’t be surprised if he and Nolte each

raise $50,000 for the campaign, which promises to be as interesting as any local race in recent years. Oh, in case you’re wondering, Davis will not have to resign his position as county commissioner because his term ends in 2016. (If his term ended in 2018, he would have to step down.) The new Hampton Inn in the Miracle Mile area is now open. Hopefully, the 90-room hotel will be a real shot in the arm for nearby businesses. Off the top of my head, I count more than 10 restaurants within walking distance. A big change, internally, is coming to the main post office in downtown Vero Beach. Beginning April 18, carriers for 14 routes will begin operating out of the Citrus Ridge post office in the 8500 block of State Road 60. Jeff Staker, who took over as postmaster on Jan. 3, called it a “cost-effective move.” This, as the city of Vero Beach is raising the rent at the main post office from $15,301 annually to $120,744.

• •

Staker said customer service at the main post office will not be affected by the changes. There’s nothing like a shark photo to exhibit the potential of the social media. On Indian River by Air’s Facebook page, the number of “Likes” jumped by more than 2,000 after John Massung posted his shark photos. (Check out indianriverbyair.com, which was mentioned on the “Today” show on April 4.) In our email exchange, Artie Mayer, who has lived in Sebastian since 1980, predicted Fellsmere will be the biggest city in Indian River County one day. I responded with this prediction: Fellsmere’s population will not top 15,000 in my lifetime. Tell me again how Cumberland Farms can charge its “members” $2.14 for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in Sebastian (County Road 512 and Barber Street) and then jack up the price to $2.44 in south county (Oslo Road and 27th Avenue). That was the case on the afternoon of April 6.
