REARVIEW MIRROR: A look at the history of hospital care in IRC Many of us know that the Indian River Medical Center complex off 37th Street between U.S. 1 and Indian River Boulevard wasn’t the first location for a county hospital. But did you know the hospital had three previous homes? Indian River County’s first hospital opened May 12, 1932 in a two-story home on Dixie Highway south of the city limits of Vero Beach. It began as the brainchild of residents Nurse Garnett Lunsford Radin, Dr. E. Bacon Hardee and funeral director Charles Ervin Cephus Cox. Patients paid $5.50 per day for a private room, which included food and nursing care. Three nurses came from Nebraska to help Radin, who received her nursing certificate from Nebraska Methodist Hospital in 1926.

She provided care at the hospital until 1942 when she joined the Navy and went to war. Then, she leased the hospital to a nonprofit group. A World War II Navy dispensary building served as the second county hospital from 1948 until 1952. It was on land at the municipal airport, which had been designated a Naval Air Station in 1942. A building on 25th Street was built in the 1950s as the hospital’s third home. When the hospital moved to its current home in the 1980s, the 25th Street building became the county administration offices. It was demolished a few years ago. – Source: A History of Indian River County by Sidney Johnston and William Adams

LEMMON DROPS: No one said owning a business was going to be easy Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the Amendment 2 rhetoric to heat up: this is what it’s like to own a business, huh? • So, I’ll take this over the “corporate” world any day.

The downside, of course, is that it’s all on my shoulders to make this thing work. There’s a delicate balance between immense satisfaction and tremendous pressure. I was encouraged by the feedback regarding Issue 1 of Lemmon Lines. Many of you said it was a “fun read,” which is all I want this to be. The main criticism had to do with the number of ads. I knew that would be the case. As I said in Issue 1, this publication could not exist without advertising. Like any business, there is a lot of overhead and, because this is a free publication, advertising dollars are what pay the bills. So, I ask that you please take that into consideration when assessing things.

Dolly

I also said in Issue 1 that I want Lemmon Lines to be the best advertising vehicle for local businesses. Advertising support is how this publication is going to grow, and mature. I want it to be a win-win. Come along on the ride! For the past few months, the •Town Council of Indian River

Russ Lemmon

Shores has been busy dealing with the Vero Beach Utilities issue. (Bottom line: Indian River Shores would like “Florida Power & Light” rates.) A new controversy has taken center stage, at least temporarily. A recent meeting of the Planning, Zoning and Variances board drew about 200 people protesting a proposed two-story office building on A1A. The board

approved the plan, and it now goes to the Town Council for approval. One of the things I love about the drive on AIA is the relative serenity. As Joni Mitchell sang, “They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.” Or, in this case, a twostory office building. In talking with Dick Robertson, a former professional •photographer, about photo possibilities for the

LemmonLines.com website, he gave this 55-year-old some words of caution: “Retirement is boring,” he said. “There’s nothing to do.” Hey, I was really looking forward to the so-called life of leisure! Robertson, who doesn’t like watching TV, does a lot of volunteer work because he believes it’s “give-back time.” As longtime readers know, I love making election •predictions. Look for them in next week’s issue. My

crystal ball is not going to have an easy time with the Vero Beach City Council race.

Those interested in knowing the story behind the •“Dolly” ad on page 4 can find it on the Lemmon Lines

page on Facebook. Then, you’ll understand why the ad means so much to me. By the way, on the same Facebook page you’ll find a photo of Paul Castraberti (owner of The Lemon Tree restaurant), who helped mark a historic moment for this newsletter. I asked Sebastian resident Jeanne Gascoigne to •email me her “review” of the first issue, and she did a

great report. She expressed concern about the Top 500 countdown (on page 7), which is going to take more than three years. “As far as your ‘500 Countdown,’ “ she wrote, “I will be 95 when you get to No. 1. YIKES.”

Fun facts

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

497. “Leaving on a Jet Plane”

(1969) Peter, Paul & Mary. Memory: Learned this song during sixth-grade chorus!

496. “I Feel for You”

(1984) Chaka Kahn. Memory: By incorporating the singer’s name into the lyrics, this was a song ahead of its time.

495. “All Summer Long”

(2008) Kid Rock. Memory: A feel-good song made even better with “Sweet Home Alabama” riffs.
