LEMMON DROPS: With foreclosure auction looming, Indian River Mall approaching a crossroads Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Clark Beckham to be crowned the 2015 “American Idol”:

• You can’t drive very far in Indian River County without

seeing large pieces of undeveloped land being cleared. From Sebastian (a small housing development just north of St. Sebastian Catholic Church) to Oslo Road (where 16 acres are being cleared for an addition to South County Park), bulldozers are getting a workout. Which seems kind of weird, given all of the uncertainty surrounding the Indian River Mall. The mall, which was built in 1996, may or may not be sold in a May 12 foreclosure auction. “I think everyone is rooting for the mall,” said Billy Moss, an agent with Lambert Commercial Real Estate. “It’s good for everybody.” Right now, the mall is being run by Alabama-based Bayer Properties. “There’s no indication at all the mall will be shut down,”

Moss said. “The guys running the show (at Bayer) are real winners. I think what you’re going to see is real upscale stores being brought to the mall. You’re going to see a lot of positive things.” On its website, Bayer lists 12 properties in its portfolio – with Indian River Mall being the only one in Florida. The website has contact information Russ Lemmon for anyone interested in leasing. I had to chuckle over the description of the mall’s location on Bayer’s website: “Conveniently located near the Disney Resort in Vero Beach, Florida, Indian River Mall is anchored by Dillard’s, Macy’s, JCPenney, Sears and an AMC 24-Screen Stadium Theatre.” OK, I suppose “conveniently” is a relative term. Here’s hoping the sign on northbound U.S. 1 that notes the accomplishment of the Vero Beach High School’s girls lacrosse team gets updated soon.

As of last week, the sign said the team was the state champion only from 2006-11. Last week, I mentioned how “Lester Nathan Highway” sometimes pops up (in Google searches) as the address for some businesses on State Highway A1A. An email from Martha Habeshian: “I recently had a similar experience. We were booking a cruise by phone and giving the agent all the pertinent information. After telling her our street address, she asked for our ZIP code and we told her 32968. We finalized the booking and shortly thereafter our confirmation arrived. Our address: Citrus Ridge, Florida. I wonder if anyone has ever heard of that.” Have you noticed the land being cleared just west of the Olive Garden? That’s going to be an interesting one to watch. The name of the nearly 20-acre development is “The Reserve at Vero Beach.” There are expected to be two restaurants, including a stand-alone Chick-Fil-A, and a retail store (Aldi is a good possibility).

But what could change the dynamics of that area is the housing element. Plans call for a three-story apartment building with 159 units. According to Ryan Sweeney, a senior planner with Indian River County, it’ll be sometime in 2016 before the commercial component of this project – which stretches from State Road 60 to College Lane – is up and running. Tell me again why the speed limit on 66th Avenue is 35 mph on the new four-lane stretch and 55 mph on the old two-lane stretch. The Sheriff’s Office could issue a speeding ticket to every other driver (including me) in the 35-mph area that goes from S.R. 60 to about 49th Street. It seems the name “Schlitt” is almost as common as “Smith” and “Jones” in these parts. Chrissy Schlitt, who works at Florida Community Bank, had some interesting trivia regarding her family: There are 108 direct descendants from her greatgrandparents still living in Vero Beach.

IN MEMORY: Friends honor Scott Terry with a fishing tournament Inspired by their friend Scott, who was tragically killed in a car accident, four local fishermen are bringing his dream to life with a fishing tournament and saltwater festival on the West Palm Beach waterfront May 22-23. Vero Beach native Scott Terry was Scott Terry an outstanding angler and community advocate who dreamed of hosting a unique fishing tournament – one that was different than the rest, a real celebration of the sport. Now a little more than one year after his death, his friends are honoring his memory with the Downtown Showdown, a sanctioned Southern Kingfish Association tournament. Numerous local and national sponsors are on board, excited to be part of this event, which is expected to be one of the biggest fishing tournaments in the area. With live music, food trucks, local vendors, kid zone and amazing boats and super cars on display, this free, family-friendly event has something for everyone.

“This is so much more than just a fishing tournament,” said John Jackson, Downtown Showdown co-founder. “It’s a place for anglers, families and the local community to celebrate the joy of the saltwater lifestyle and to honor a great man.” As a tribute to Scott, proceeds from the event will go to Lauren’s Kids, a South Florida-based non-profit organization that educates adults and children about sexual abuse prevention through in-school curricula, awareness campaigns and speaking engagements. Scott was an advocate for this organization. With the support of Lauren’s Kids, Scott testified against the man that sexually abused him as a child. Scott’s testimony helped put his abuser behind bars for life. The man who abused Scott ran a popular Treasure Coast fishing tournament, which fueled Scott’s desire to take charge of a local tournament and make it better, make it great. Top 500 countdown

Fun facts

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

413. “Reflections of My Life”

(1970) The Marmalade Memory: I always associate this song with the Vietnam War era.

Temperature extremes in Vero Beach …

All-time high temperature in May: 99 (set on May 29, 2000). All-time low temperature in May: 46 (set on May 5, 1971). – Source: National Weather Service

412. “I Would Do Anything for Love”

(1993) Meat Loaf Memory: My respect for “Mr. Loaf” went up a few notches after seeing him in concert.

411. “You’re a Friend of Mine”

(1993) Tag Team (1985) Clarence Clemons and Jackson Browne Memory: A most unusual collaboration. Just a “happy” song ... hard to believe it’s 30 years old! All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
