LEMMON DROPS: Oslo Road exit (ETA 2022) will provide a ‘balance’ to the county Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the field of Republican presidential candidates to reach 20:

• While never a lightning rod like Fellsmere, the proposed

I-95 exit at Oslo Road often was used as a “scare tactic” by those opposed to growth in Indian River County. The exit would be a big step toward us becoming “another South Florida.” Or so I kept hearing back in 2007, my first year at the Press Journal. Well, come 2022 (or thereabouts), the exit should be a reality. It has been approved by all of the necessary governmental agencies. Phil Matson, the director of the county’s Metropolitan Planning Organization, doesn’t see the exit turning Oslo Road into another State Road 60. Rather, he described it as a convenience for existing residents and businesses in the area – that is, they won’t have to backtrack to get to I-95. “I think it’s going to be more like (the I-95 exit at)

County Road 512,” Matson said. “It’s a wonderful thing for Sebastian residents.” Sebastian is the biggest city in the county, and there’s plenty of room for growth in the Oslo Road area. Still, Matson doesn’t see a spike in population in south county as a result of the exit. Russ Lemmon “I don’t think there’s going to be a major densification,” he said. Of course, he offered the standard “crystal ball” disclaimer. To me, the Oslo Road exit will provide more of a “balance” to the county. It’s going to be a great addition. Steve Fugate’s two-year, zig-zag walk across the lower 48 states to raise awareness of suicide will come to an end this week. Fugate, now 68, has logged more than 10,000 miles on this journey – it’s his eighth such walk spurred by his son’s suicide in 1999.

At 2 p.m. on Saturday (June 20), friends will gather at A.W. Young Park – located on 21st Street on the east side of Indian River Boulevard – for a “welcome home” celebration for Fugate. The public is invited to attend. Attention, elderly drivers: You may want to head to the Vero Beach Community Center on Wednesday (June 17, 9 a.m. to noon) for the “Safety is Golden Mobility Fair.” It’s an event designed for drivers over the age of 65. I’m hoping there’s a session about driving in the left lane. Not that anyone who was out and about in recent months is surprised, but the 2014-15 tourist season officially ranks among the best ever in these parts. Look no further than the county’s 4 percent “tourist tax” at hotels, which generated a record $733,990. It’s amazing how a mere 4 percent tax – which hotel guests probably don’t even notice – can add up like that. There’s no downside to this type of tax. I’ve never put much stock in hurricane forecasts, but

I certainly hope the one for 2015 – “zero to 2” major hurricanes – is accurate. The Lemmons have lived here since late ’06, and there’s never been a time when we’ve considered putting up our hurricane shutters. Knock on wood. Did you know there’s a new media entity in the county? It’s called Buzz TV … and it’s only on the Internet (VeroBuzzTV.com). A group of former TV 10 employees – including Marcia Littlejohn, Jeff Voegele, Alex Zulueta and Holly Smith – started the new venture on May 1. “It’s the future of television,” Voegele said. “Broadcast television is dying.” Unlike TV 10, Buzz TV does not have geographic boundaries (because it’s Internet-based) and is not regulated by the Federal Communications Commission. Voegele recently interviewed me, and it’ll be available the VeroBuzzTV.com website this week. Check it out, won’t you?
