REARVIEW MIRROR: A look back at a former Vero Beach landmark If you don’t give directions along a portion of U.S. 1 based on “where Marvin Gardens used to be,” then you must not have lived here in the 1980s and early ‘90s. The popular restaurant and bar was a favorite with sports fans and a hot spot for hanging out and meeting people, particularly on its wooden deck. What’s now a concrete slab on a vacant lot on the east side of U.S. 1 between 30th and 31st streets, originally was a building of cypress wood erected in 1926 by Waldo Sexton. It housed the Rose Garden Tea Room and Grill, also known as the Rose Garden Dining Room. It had elegant table settings and memorable food, and was Vero Beach’s swankiest spot during the late 1930s and ’40s. There was a rose garden and a strawberry patch. A popular feature of the

menu was that a fisherman’s own catch could be cooked for him. Also on the menu: fried chicken, seafood, steaks and pork chops. It was the Palms Bar and Lounge, a countrywestern bar, in the 1970s. In 1981, it became Marvin Gardens, with a name inspired by the Monopoly game. The bar tabletop had ceramic tiles naming the Monopoly properties – and the land was across from Vero Beach’s “water works” (a popular Monopoly property). It went out of business in 1993 and the property was neglected. Oriental rug dealer Jafar Falasiri bought it in 1996, intending to renovate it and turn it into a rug showroom. That never happened. Before the county condemned it, Falsari decided to raze the building. Just before demolition was to start in 2004, citrus grower Rusty Banack, a Marvin Gardens fan, saved it, and moved it to another site.

LEMMON DROPS: Mainland playing key role in revival of local housing market Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the (bottle) rockets’ red glare:

• In case you haven’t noticed, the local housing market is

revving up again. This time, however, the barrier island isn’t receiving all of the attention. The mainland is gaining in respect. Susan Harris, who does client relations for Jetson, knows where the store’s appliances and big-screen TVs are being delivered. More and more, they’re going to new houses west of 43rd Avenue. “There’s been a new migration pattern happening in Vero Beach,” she said. “People are evaluating traffic beachside, proximity to the railroad and looking westward. Many of the builders in the area are noticing this shift and acting on it.” GHO Homes has been ahead of the curve, so to speak, with the migration. It has developed a variety of communities,

with a variety of price points. The newest (with prices around $400,000) is Lake Sapphire, which is in the vicinity of 43rd Avenue and 5th Street SW. Regatta Construction, known for the houses it built on the barrier island, is behind the high-end Water Mill Landing off of 43rd Avenue. Russ Lemmon Patti Croswell, a sales consultant with GHO Homes, says it’s not just snowbirds looking to buy homes. “A lot of local people are moving around,” she said. “Our sales have been phenomenal.” If All Aboard Florida becomes a reality, more people may be looking to the west for a home. “People are thinking ahead,” Harris said. We’re down to the final two months.

By the end of August, the construction on U.S. 1 between Oslo Road and the St. Lucie County line should be complete. “As long as the weather holds out,” FDOT spokesperson Barbara Kelleher offered as a disclaimer. While driving from Sebastian to our house in the Winter Beach area the other day, for some reason the gradual decline in elevation on U.S. 1 really made an impression. (I probably saw a bicyclist going in the opposite direction and wondered how tough it was to navigate the gradual incline.) Intrigued, I did a Google search. The elevation of Sebastian is 20 feet, and in Winter Beach it’s 9 feet. That may not sound like much of a difference, but it is. I love one of the reasons why Ralph Oko decided to start the “Our Veterans Voice” radio show (Sundays at 4:30 p.m. on 107.9 FM and 1370 AM, and Saturdays at 10 p.m. on 101.7 FM): “It is our job to explain the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day.” Here’s hoping the local businesses that put “Happy

Memorial Day” on their marquees listen to Ralph’s show! The live auction Thursday evenings at the Vero World Bazaar & Antique Mall is becoming quite the event, as a swing band has been added to the mix. David Letts, who owns Jewelry Bazaar, brought in his six-member band – Letts Dance (love that name!) – to play before last week’s auction, and they plan to do it again this week. The band starts playing at 5:30 p.m. You say “Sebastian Fourth of July parade,” and I say “Americana.” A text arrived at 12:47 p.m. on a Sunday. Included within was a photo of Rosie Livings inside a Bob Evans. “Thinking of u n Nashville! Saw Trish Yearwood & husband Garth as ‘surprise guests’ at the Grand Ole Opry! ‘She’s in Love with the Boy’ surely is on your all-time list. … Just sayin’.” Well, in doing a quick check of the Top 500 songs, there are 38 with the word “love” in the title and 2 with “boy.” Could there be a match? Stay tuned!

Before JP Matty’s, she worked at Bono’s for three years and Crusty’s for five years. “Crusty’s was the best gig ever – ever, handsdown,” she said. How so? Fun facts

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

389. “Will You Love Me Tomorrow”

(1961) The Shirelles Memory: Did you know this song, written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin, was the first No. 1 hit by an all-girl group in the U.S.? It’s the second-oldest song in the countdown.

At least eight commercial airlines have operated out of the Vero Beach Municipal Airport. Eastern Airlines had the longest run, from 1932 to 1972. The last year for commercial service at the airport was 1996. The airline with the final commercial flight was American Eagle. – Source: Vero Beach Municipal Airport

388. “Change Would Do You Good”

(1997) Sheryl Crow Memory: This former schoolteacher had an impressive string of hits back in the ‘90s.

387. “We Will Rock You” / “We Are the Champions”

(1977) Queen Memory: Stomp, stomp, clap ... stomp, stomp, clap. Are you with me? This song combo fits my definition as a “masterpiece.” All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
