LEMMON DROPS: Vero Beach Pirate Festival heads into choppy waters Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Donald Trump’s next gaffe:

• The first Vero Beach Pirate Festival will be held July 31-

Aug. 2 at Riverside Park. While I think it’s a great idea and has potential to become the city’s signature summer event, there are some “political” elements that could put it in the one-and-done category. You see, the organization promoting the event is the Vero Beach Chamber of Commerce – which was founded by Charlie Wilson, who is pretty much a lightning rod in these parts. Last year, Wilson started the Vero chamber to compete with the long-established Indian River County Chamber of Commerce. So, to say there’s some “bad blood” would be an understatement. Take politics out of the picture, and the Vero Beach Pirate Festival sounds like a slam dunk to draw visitors from near and far. The event coincides with the July 31 commemoration of the maritime disaster that happened 300 years ago. (See Pam

Cooper’s article on page 2.) There was a rather bold prediction within the Vero chamber’s news release for the event: “15,000 people are expected to attend.” Hmmm. That seems overly optimistic, although I’d love to see the festival become a summer staple. The Indian River Chamber of Russ Lemmon Commerce has more than 800 members. So, it’s unknown how many will be boycotting the event solely because it’s being promoted by the Vero chamber. It would be a shame if pettiness killed an event like this. Check out verobeachpiratefest.com and decide for yourself. According to the website, it will be a family-friendly event. Indian River County is closing in on a milestone. The number of registered voters has now topped 99,000. (Supervisor of Elections Leslie Swan previously predicted

they’ll hit 100,000 before the 2016 Presidential Preference Primary, which is set for March 15). As I mentioned several weeks ago, the Lemmons decided to not renew our membership to Sam’s Club because gas prices were consistently cheaper at the Walmart in Sebastian. I mean, cheaper gas is why we paid more than $40 a year for a Sam’s Club membership. We are now “members” at Cumberland Farms, where there’s no annual fee and gas prices as low as anywhere around. Take that, Sam’s Club! What’s it like to be a substitute teacher in public schools? A new book “Subbing: A Memoir by a Former Substitute Teacher” is available on amazon.com and bn.com for $12. Who wrote it? The author is “Anonymous” – but let’s just say he/she may/may not have ties to Indian River County. (Wink, wink.) Installation of a much-needed stoplight at the intersection of 43rd Avenue and 1st Street has been pushed back until

the end of the year, according to Chris Mora, the county’s director of Public Works. The project was originally scheduled to start during the summer. At a networking breakfast last week at Seacoast Bank, I had to chuckle when Philip Dasch, a client advisor with the bank, encouraged the group to start thinking about opening Christmas Club accounts. This came just days after I rolled my eyes as my wife watched the Hallmark Channel’s “Christmas in July” weekend. Honestly, I didn’t know Christmas Club accounts were still popular in today’s society. I remember having one as a kid … yep, I was pretty proud of myself for saving $50. As I’ve mentioned before, Richard Granata loves trains – and that includes counting rail cars when he’s stopped at the crossing gate. A few weeks ago, he counted a train with 205 cars, which was just three shy of his record. Why does he count them? “It’s something to do,” he said.

Fun facts

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

The warmest July on record in Vero Beach? It was 2005, with an average temperature of 83.7 degrees, followed by 2010 (83.5 degrees) and 1997 (83.4 degrees).

383. “St. Elmo’s Fire (Man in Motion)”

The coolest July on record in Vero Beach? It was 1974, with an average temperature of 79.1 degrees, followed by 1975 (79.7 degrees) and 1971 (79.9 degrees).

(1985) John Parr Memory: I know it’s strange, but I always think of Demi Moore and Emilio Estevez (stars of the movie of the same name) when I hear this song. The thing is, I can’t remember any scene from the movie!

382. “Lady in Red”

(1986) Chris de Burgh Memory: This would make my Top 10 list for favorite “romantic” songs.

381. “Wonder”

(1995) Natalie Merchant Memory: What a voice. I can’t imagine anyone doing a better job with this song. All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
