LEMMON DROPS: Library offers you a chance to step back in time (to 1715) Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the next rumble of thunder:
• To be honest, I’ve never liked the name “Treasure Coast.”
Upon hearing it the first time (after having moved here from the Midwest), I thought it sounded like a cheap imitation of “Gold Coast.” Plus, it just sounds awkward. I didn’t realize it was related to what we are commemorating this week – the Spanish Treasure Fleet that was lost in a 1715 hurricane. At least the name makes sense now. Not that “Spanish Treasures Coast” and “Sunken Treasures Coast” roll off the tongue, but they might make for a better first impression. (Of course, the tweaked names would never fly because the official names of the coasts in Florida are limited to two words.) Kudos to the 1715 Fleet Society and the library for collaborating to commemorate this maritime disaster. The

displays in the library give you a real sense of history. The 1715 Fleet Society has members all across the country, and many of them will be in Indian River County this week to retrace history. Check out the library this week, won’t you? You might learn a thing or two about local history. Russ Lemmon Our local libraries are more popular than I thought. Mary Snyder, the director of the library system, had Josh Perez (her “I.T. guru”) check on the number of people who have used their library card in the past year, and below are the numbers. Main Library: 17,036. North County Library: 9,676. Brackett Library: 2,092. Gifford Library: 112. Pretty impressive numbers, no? The hurricane in 1715 struck on July 31. According to the

website hurricanecity.com, since 1871 (which is as far as its records go back), we’ve had only two hurricanes in July. We’ve been hit by 30 hurricanes during the past 144 years. By the way, the website says we’re 3 years overdue for a hurricane. Yikes. To give you an idea how my mind works, when I first heard the name 1715 Fleet Society I thought of the 1910 Fruitgum Company – you know, the band from the 1960s. So, I went to YouTube and listened to the song “Yummy Yummy Yummy.” If you watched “Last Comic Standing” last week, you probably saw a clip of Julie Scoggins telling a joke. She’s going to be the featured comic Aug. 7-8 at Riverside Theatre’s Comedy Zone. Since the debut of the Comedy Zone in May 2007, attendance for the shows is north of 70,000, according to Oscar Sales, Riverside Theatre’s marketing director.

Community Management is a new advertiser. I just assumed the business name had something to do with the beach – perhaps even the beach park on A1A. That’s not the case. The “Golden” part is for Golden Retrievers. Owner Bob Begley has three Golden Retrievers (that’s 5-year-old Chase in the ad; Casey and Dugan are the others) and he brings them to work on a rotating basis. I’ve known Bob’s wife, Janet Begley, for several years. She’s a freelance writer and she does a great job with news stories in the Press Journal. What I never knew about Janet and Bob: Their son, Rob, is a professional wrestler on the WWE circuit. He goes by the name Vik Dalisous. Very cool! I kid you not: Someone on eBay is trying to sell a 1977 dinner menu from The Patio restaurant for $45. It’s one of 2,500-plus menus from restaurants around the country that the person is trying to sell on eBay.

Fun facts
Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down. 377. “You’ve Got a Friend” (1971) Carole King Memory: The version by James Taylor could have been in this slot, but I gave the tiebreaker to the songwriter. 376. “Danny’s Song” (1971) Loggins and Messina Memory: “Even though we ain’t got money, I’m so in love with you, honey.” Love the lyrics and the story behind the song. 375. “Jet Airliner” (1977) Steve Miller Band Memory: I swear, my college roommate played this song a billion times in our dorm room. Good thing I liked it. All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
