REARVIEW MIRROR: A look at the history of the Barber Bridge The original Merrill P. Barber Bridge, made of steel and concrete for $800,000, was dedicated March 18, 1951. It was named for one of Vero Beach’s most prominent businessmen and politicians. Barber came to Vero Beach from Missouri with his family in 1913 when he was 3 years old. He attended the University of Florida and established a grower’s supply store in Vero Beach in 1935. He was a director of the Indian River Citrus Bank and elected its president in 1948. He was Vero Beach’s eighth mayor, from December 1947 to December 1949. He was a member of the state Senate from 1954-58 and from 1963-68. The bridge built and named for Barber was a drawbridge connecting the mainland to the barrier island in a straight line. It replaced, and was to the south of, the old Vero

bridge, built in 1920 and made of cabbage palm pilings and wooden planks. The current four-lane, fixed-span, mile-long Barber Bridge was completed in 1995 for $25.5 million and replaced the drawbridge that was in frequent disrepair. Much of the original was sunk to be a reef; the steel span was sold to Disney and went to Walt Disney World. – Source: The Press Journal and “A History of Indian River County”

LEMMON DROPS: Another Indian River County icon to fade from the scene Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Brian Heady and Damien Gilliams to try, try again for elected office: Wabasso Tackle Shop. • The Few buildings in Indian River County are as distinctive

as this one, located on the southeast corner of U.S. 1 and County Road 510. It looks like it’s from a bygone era. Eventually, the building will be torn down to make way for widened roads. Owners Steve and Barbara Parsons aren’t going to wait for an eviction notice from the state. They’re closing the shop on Dec. 31. They decided against staying open through the height of the tourist season because they didn’t want the hassle of starting another tax year. “I don’t want to start a new set of books,” Steve said. Why quit before the bulldozers arrive? “Because I want to have a life,” he said.

Steve has owned the Wabasso Tackle Shop for 35 years – or half his life. He often worked seven days a week. He says the decision to walk away on Dec. 31 was a big weight off their shoulders. It’s a business that sells 3,000 shrimp per day when busy. “The closing of this landmark should generate a lot of fish stories,” Russ Lemmon said longtime customer Tom Young, “and maybe another opportunity to have someone explain why we need a four-lane road that connects to a two-lane bridge.” Attention, history buffs and baseball fans: The unveiling of a historic marker for Dodgertown is scheduled for Monday (Nov. 10) at noon. Some former Dodger greats are expected to be in attendance. Those attending the First Friday Gallery Stroll in

downtown Vero Beach should make it a point to stop at the Lighthouse Gallery, located at the corner of 19th Street and 14th Avenue, to see the controversial exhibit by local artist Ron Van Sweringen. Six paintings having to do with the racial unrest in Ferguson (Missouri) will be on display. “These paintings are stunning and meant to stun, to open eyes and start the conversation,” Barry Shapiro, the owner of Lighthouse Art and Framing, said in a press release. “That is what they certainly will do.” The exhibit will run through November. I honestly can’t remember the last time I voted on Election Day, and I can’t see myself ever doing it again. That’s because early voting is soooo convenient. Which reminds me … a round of applause, please, for all of the poll workers who helped out with the election. They’re such dedicated people. My first speaking engagement as publisher of Lemmon

Lines? It’ll be Sunday morning at the Temple Beth Shalom. Ralph Oko originally invited me to speak to the men’s club, but he subsequently opened it up to the entire synagogue. Gulp. Last month, Vero Beach actors John Houx and Jim Daly were the only two people on stage for the production of “Tuesdays with Morrie” at the Pineapple Playhouse in Fort Pierce. Now, Daly says he and Houx have decided to imitate art with life by meeting every Tuesday for breakfast. Vero Beach seems to become a little more dog-friendly each year. (Although I’m surprised there are only two “doggie dining” establishments, Osceola Bistro and 3 Dog Deli.) The latest step in that direction will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 8) with the grand opening of the Vero Beach Dog Park. The off-leash facility is located on the barrier island, just north of the base of the Barber Bridge. Kudos to the dedicated group of dog-lovers who made this happen.

Fun facts

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

491. “Real World”

(1998) Matchbox Twenty. Memory: I never understood the band’s name, but it had a string of Top 500-caliber hits in the late ‘90s.

490. “Thank You for Being a Friend”

(1978) Andrew Gold. Memory: I liked this song long before it became associated with the TV show “Golden Girls.”

489. “Story of My Life”

(2013) One Direction. Memory: Alex Preston singing this song on “American Idol” is what catapulted it into the Top 500.
