From a smoky 1920’s Speakeasy to the Bowery of the 1930’s, from a World War II USO to a 1950’s Manhattan supper club, Swinging on a Star perfectly weaves various settings and scenes with some of the most popular songs of a generation. The journey also showcases music from the “Road Movies” starring Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. Songs include: “Road to Morocco,” “Going My Way,” “Moonlight Becomes You,” “Swinging on a Star,” and many more.

LEMMON DROPS: James Patterson shows his support for Vero Beach Book Center Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the first Christmas song on the radio:

• As if his $10,000 check earlier this year wasn’t enough,

best-selling author James Patterson is doing the Vero Beach Book Center another favor. He has a book-signing appearance scheduled for Sunday (Nov. 8), from 1 to 3 p.m. “James Patterson has been extremely supportive of independent book stores,” said owner Chad Leonard. “Last year he gave $1 million to indies across the nation.” Vero Beach Book Center is celebrating its 40th year in business this fall. So, what’s the story about Patterson’s $10,000 check? “We heard that he was giving out money, so I simply applied for it,” Leonard said. “He is extremely passionate about encouraging children to read, so he wanted to know what our store offered for children. Well, our entire second

floor is for children and we often bring authors to schools, run book fairs … “We had also just combined the stores from two buildings to one, so I think he appreciated the hard work and the expense involved in that process.” With the Internet and national chains dominating book sales these days, Vero Beach is fortunate to have Russ Lemmon an independent book store of this caliber. Patterson isn’t the only big name making a book-signing appearance here. For example, David Baldacci will be here on Dec. 2. I asked Leonard about his level of pride in the store’s 40th anniversary. His parents opened the store in 1975. “I’m 41, so I’ve grown up in this store. I don’t know life without it,” he said. “Just like many people in town, I can’t

imagine Vero Beach without the Book Center. I think I feel my highest level of pride when customers tell me or the staff how much they love our store and how important it is.” As longtime readers know, I become a Republican in evennumbered years before the August primary. (Background: I’m a true NPA, but in Indian River County, you have to be registered as a Republican to have a meaningful vote in local elections.) In 2016, I’ll probably be a Republican for most of the year, as I want to vote in the March 15 Presidential Preference Primary. Before GOP loyalists bristle at my plan, please note that I opted to watch last week’s Republican presidential debate over Game 2 of the World Series. Conde Nast Travel’s 2015 Readers Choice Awards are out, and Vero Beach Hotel & Spa is No. 4 on the list of the best hotels in Florida. When you think of all the top-of-the-line hotels in the state, whether in Miami, West Palm Beach or Orlando, being ranked No. 4 is very impressive.

• I’ve been writing columns for 30 years, but this will be the first time I’ve ever typed the word “ebullient.” I’m doing so only because Jenny Seemayer, who is the general manager of Regus, gave me a deer-in-the-headlights look when she used the word in a recent conversation. In case you’re wondering, she did not describe me as ebullient. Rather, she opted for “stoic.” Ouch! What’s the longest stretch of road in Indian River County without a stoplight or caution light? I’m thinking it’s on 58th Avenue, between Oslo Road and 4th Street. With the Christmas season approaching, I received a “naughty or nice?”-type call last week completely out of the blue. Pastor James Womack said he would like to treat me to breakfast. Um, OK. (To be continued. Just by coincidence, we’re meeting for breakfast on Election Day, so I’ll let you know how it goes!)

Top 500 countdown Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down. 335. “Holiday” (1983) Madonna Memory: The superstar’s first hit single. 334. “I’ve Seen All Good People” (1971) Yes Memory: The first half of this nearly 7-minute song would probably make the Top 200. 333. “Love Story” (2008) Taylor Swift Memory: She used “Romeo and Juliet” as inspiration for a real-life situation, but changed it to have a happy ending. All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
