REARVIEW MIRROR: A look at the history of the Bethel Creek House Did you know what’s now Vero Beach had the first House of Refuge on the East Coast? Here’s how that came to be: In summer of 1874, Congress authorized a system of houses of refuge along Florida’s east coast because the U.S. Lifesaving Service (now U.S. Coast Guard) recognized it “differed in conditions and in the character of lifesaving aid from any other U.S. coast.” Essentially, vessels came so near the beach that crews had little difficulty getting to land, so few drowned. But once they got to land they were in danger of dying of hunger and thirst because the area was desolate. Legislation called for shelters and food for shipwrecked mariners. By 1876, five houses of refuge had been built. The first, later known as Bethel Creek House of Refuge

was on the beach in the vicinity of what is now Jaycee Park. Other houses were constructed in present-day Stuart, Delray Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Biscayne Bay. Each house had a keeper. John Houston, a relative of Texan Sam Houston, was the first Bethel Creek keeper in 1876, for five years. Most of his reports were of conditions of weather, surf and life at the house, which provided accommodations for 25 people and provisions to feed shipwrecked people for 10 days. Keepers did not remain long because of the dreary isolated lifestyle. Bethel Creek had four keepers in its first 10 years. They responded to wrecks, stranded ships and distress calls from boats in the river and ocean. Today, a building on the site, at 4405 Highway A1A, is available for rental from the city as a banquet hall. – Source: “A History of Indian River County” by Sidney Johnston and William Adams

LEMMON DROPS: Sidewalk on 82nd Avenue needs to be put in sooner rather than later Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the next wave of snowbirds to arrive: Life on 82nd Avenue used to be so tranquil. Not •anymore.

Just three years ago, according to the Indian River County Traffic Volume Report, there were only 549 daily trips between 65th Street and State Road 60. In 2013, that number increased to 3,791. Blame it on the number of sand-mine trucks and the paving of 26th Street between 74th and 82nd avenues. “It used to be that you could sit here for an hour and never see a car,” said Tracy D’Ambrosia, who lives a quarter-mile from 82nd Avenue. “I’ve seen (the increased traffic) affect so many people out here.” She has lived in the same house for 17 years. “My son was born and raised out here,” she said “He learned how to ride a bike on this street. He learned how

to fish in the canal.” So much for living in the country. Her son, Nathan D’Ambrosia, is a sophomore at Sebastian River High School. Would he be able to learn how to ride on bike on 82nd Avenue now? “I could,” he said, “but not without fearing for my life.” The problem is, there are no Russ Lemmon sidewalks in this area. When Tracy takes her dog for a walk on 82nd Avenue, things can get pretty scary. “When there are cars coming in both directions, I have to jump in the ditch,” she said. As the County Commissioner for District 1, Wesley Davis says it’s “incumbent on me” to get a sidewalk from 26th Street to State Road 60. (He said that in an email to

Chris Mora, the county’s director of Public Works.) We’ll see how long it takes. Mora said he could not estimate the cost of the sidewalk, but he did say it would be “more than $50,000.” Chalk it up to the cost of growth. Booooooo!!!! That was my reaction when I heard the convenience center on 65th Street will be closing on Jan. 5. Of course, I care only because I live about a mile away and use it at least once a week. The power of the “social media” was evident last week after I posted four photos of the iconic Wabasso Tackle Shop on Facebook. (As reported in Issue 4, the U.S. 1 fixture will be closing on Dec. 31.) More than 180 people shared the Facebook posting, which meant it reached more than 14,000 people. In one of my final columns for the Press Journal, I noted the great job Brenda Bradley did in decorating her

governmental office – which, let’s face it, government offices are often plain. (She is chief of staff at the Tax Collector’s Office and used her own money to decorate.) She told me she loves decorating and offered to help me, should the need ever arise. Fast forward a month or so, and Brenda is decorating the office of Lemmon Lines! (See photos on Facebook.) What a fabulous job she did. Thank you, Brenda!!! Let the record show that I went 4-for-4 with elections. Granted, it was a surprise because my confidence level was so low. The first speaking engagement of 2015 has been booked: See you on Feb. 13, Vista Plantation residents! A testimonial for Lemmon Lines via email from Phil Weiler: “Congratulations on LL. I have a new Thursday routine. Latest issue of LL @ Brooklyn Bagel. Enjoy them both – and only one makes me fat.”

Hidden treasures in Indian River County • Fellsmere: Going to Feldner’s Etched Glass Studios is like pulling up to a storage unit. However, once inside, I was met by eyeglasses, not what I imagined. Then after a turn within the small shop, I saw the impressive and elegant etchings hanging on • Vero Beach: Who would think a the wall. Not only on glass, but on wood, and furniture store would be a fantastic place to other material. Even on headstones. Yes, you find history? That is what I found at Mike’s heard me correctly, headstones. Beautiful and La Hays Furniture in Vero. It’s a family business custom made. (since 1960), which may rattle a bit when the train rumbles • Wabasso: Tourists take note, the Hale Groves store on on the tracks feet from the store. But once you bypass the U.S. 1 is a stop to make (besides, it is basically only open new and slightly used furniture, a turn to the right takes during tourist season). With the ambiance of a country store you to a piece of the past. Some will remember the old and service with a smile, this has everything from packaged appliances: a cigarette machine one has to reach down to oranges to little Florida knick-knacks. Taste testing and pull out the prize; or very old washers where the fancy hand fruit baskets, fresh vegetables, and local honey are also the dryer was attached at top to wring out the clothing; or a favorites. But my daughter claims the orange cream swirl monitor-top refrigerator. ice cream makes it worth the trip. Many people live in this rut: They go on each day not even aware of the wonders that hide within their reach. Never fear! I will seek out these local mysterious places and share them here.

LemmonLines.com Top 500 countdown

Fun facts

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

488. “Peace Train”

(1971) Cat Stevens. Memory: More than four decades later, we seem to have moved further away from peace.

487. “Jar of Hearts”

(2010) Christina Perri. Memory: Love the emotion in her voice, and the story she tells in this song.

(1975) Kiss. Memory: One of the anthems from my high school years. Sounds just as good today as it did back then.

486. “Rock and Roll All Nite”

Did you know about 80 percent of the citrus packed in Indian River County goes to 20 countries around the world? About 3 million cartons of Indian River grapefruit were shipped to Japan last year. About 500,000 cartons of Indian River oranges were shipped to Canada.

Festival of Trees 2014

All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
