LEMMON DROPS: Vero Beach 32963 aggressively taking on Press Journal Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the next wave of Powerball fever:

• As the only daily newspaper in Vero Beach, the Press

Journal has long been “the Big Dog” of the local media. The weekly Vero Beach 32963 is now aggressively going after that title. Last month, 32963 publisher Milton Benjamin placed an ad on the website JournalismJobs.com that was like a shot across the bow to the Press Journal’s future owner, Gannett, which publishes Florida Today, the dominant newspaper in Brevard County. “Having ousted Scripps as the #1 news organization in Vero Beach, then expanded our newspaper dominance during the short time Journal Media Group owned the local daily, our weekly newspaper, Vero Beach 32963, is gearing up for a new challenge in early 2016 when Gannett takes ownership of the daily paper.” The next sentence in the ad made me laugh because of S KETETTAASTT CK TTIIC TA ARR T SS T

Benjamin’s chest-beating. “We have more than twice as many editors, reporters and photographers here in Indian River County as the daily – but we want MORE.” There’s no denying 32963 has more newsroom personnel based in Indian River County than the Press Journal. Meanwhile, the newspaper is 32963’s top priority. In contrast, the Press Russ Lemmon Journal is a “digital-first newsroom” with Twitter and Facebook playing big roles in its news strategy. Knowing that difference in philosophies makes this paragraph from 32963’s ad even funnier (because it’s like an inside joke): “We couldn’t care less if you have never tweeted a single tweet, have no followers on Facebook, and no clue how to shoot video on your iPhone. If you need 1,000 or 1,500 or (gasp) 2,000 words to tell a compelling story, you’ve got it! “If you’ve got the journalistic chops, we are prepared to pay a competitive salary. And by the way, our beachside community is one of the nicest places to live and work on earth.” I found it curious that Benjamin did not mention 32963’s sister publication, Vero News, in the ad. Vero News has a larger circulation, but 32963 has the deserved reputation of being a must-read. The site where Denny’s used to be on U.S. 1 (in the Kmart Plaza vicinity) is being cleared for a small commercial development. The main attraction will be Moe’s Southwest Grill. The matchmaker for the site was Billy Moss, a broker with Lambert Commercial Real Estate. “I was working on (Moe’s) for years,” he said. Moe’s is expected to open in late spring or early summer. in Sebastian, there are two gas stations – Speedway and Mobil. They always have the same gas prices. Always! Here’s what I’d like to know: Which station is usually the first to change the price? (Or, to put it another way, which station plays follow the leader?) Doesn’t it seem strange there are TWO Howard Johnson hotels in Indian River County? I mean, this is 2016, not 1972. In last week’s issue, I wrote about Carl Miller and his hope FDOT will delay the Oslo Road interchange on I-95 for 5 to 10 years. Shouldn’t be a problem, according to former County Commissioner Art Neuberger. It’s not going to be a simple process. “I’ll predict completion no sooner than 2040,” Neuberger said. Whoa! Is it a rule that voices in radio commercials for auto dealers must cause listeners to have a “fingernails on the chalkboard”type reaction? If so, I’m there.

Top 500 countdown Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down. 302. “Top of the World” (1972) The Carpenters Memory: Ah, such innocent times back then. 301. “Shower the People” (1976) James Taylor Memory: A song with a simple message about love. 300. “Not Ready to Make Nice” (2006) Dixie Chicks Memory: The country trio’s powerful “answer” to being ostracized in 2003 after criticizing President Bush in London before the start of the Iraq War. All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.

Fun facts Indian River County’s website (ircgov.com) has seen the number of page views skyrocket in recent years. During fiscal year 2014-15, the website had 3.1 million page views. Two years before, the number was 1.8 million. The projection for the current fiscal year is 3.5 million page views. – Source: Indian River County
