LEMMON DROPS: ’Establishment’ GOP has quite the dilemma in Florida primary Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Sonika Vaid to win “American Idol”:

• I’m loving being a registered Republican!

Yes, I’m a RINO (Republican In Name Only), but I wasn’t going to miss voting in the March 15 Presidential Preference Primary. I’ve watched every GOP debate and, as a wannabe political strategist, love talking about the race for Republican nomination. So-called “establishment” Republicans in Florida and Ohio have a real dilemma. According to the game plan designed by party notables to stop Donald Trump, Marco Rubio has to win the Florida primary and John Kasich has to win the Ohio primary. Both are winnertake-all states, meaning the winner will receive all of the state’s delegates. If Trumps wins both states, the race is all but over. Sorry, establishment Republicans, but I couldn’t vote for Rubio. He’s not ready to be President, in my opinion. (He

lost me with his lame mocking of Trump’s spray tan.) Originally, I was going to vote for either Jeb Bush or Chris Christie. But both dropped out of the race. So, in early voting, I decided to go with another governor – John Kasich. I know, I know … Kasich has no chance of winning in Florida. Still, I like his demeanor and how he has Russ Lemmon stayed on the high road in the campaign. That being said, I’ll be rooting for Rubio to beat Trump in the Florida primary. Trump would be another Barry Goldwater in the general election. I can’t see myself voting for either Trump or Hillary Clinton. As I posted to Twitter several weeks ago, Ross Perot was 24 years ahead of his time. This is the perfect year for someone with stature to run as an independent. Whether ETS T IC K R T AT S TA

that person is Mitt Romney or Jon Huntsman or even John Kasich, the political climate is right for a bold move. Last week’s special-call meeting by the Sebastian City Council was fascinating to watch. My observations: Richard Gillmor deserved to be taken to task for overstepping his bounds as mayor, but he did not deserve such a public browbeating from Andrea Coy, Jim Hill and Bob McPartlan. What I found to be most troubling is this: When Gillmor resigned as mayor, the vice mayor, Jerome Adams, was denied the opportunity to succeed him. Coy, Hill and McPartlan – all former mayors – executed a power play to deny Adams the chance to run council meetings. Meanwhile, Gillmor is hoping he gets the last laugh. He has filed to run against Hill for the District 1 seat on the County Commission. Susan Adams, the daughter of former County Commissioner Fran Adams, is also in the race. I like how Sebastian’s Michael Sarver described Donald

Trump: “He’s definitely a conversation-starter.” Ya think? After months of seeing two nearby gas stations in Sebastian with identical prices, one finally blinked last week. The Mobil station at the intersection of U.S. 1 and eastbound County Road 512 had unleaded for $1.61, and the Speedway station was at $1.57. Don’t know if this was a one-time deal or someone was just asleep at the switch. When I worked at the Press Journal, I always did the out-of-state license plate count in March. I’ve decided against reviving the count in Lemmon Lines. That’s not to say I didn’t notice cars with plates from South Dakota and the Canadian province of New Brunswick last week. Chrissy Schlitt will be moving to Maine soon, and her 10-year-old son, Hayden, a fourth-grader at Beachland Elementary is all excited. “Mom, I’ll finally get a snow day!” he said.

Top 500 countdown

Fun facts

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

The warmest March on record in Vero Beach? It was 1997, with an average temperature of 74.0 degrees, followed by 2003 (73.6 degrees) and 1948 (72.9 degrees).

281. “Reminiscing” (1978) Little River Band Memory: The Australian band’s biggest hit in the U.S. It was a bigger hit here than in Australia.

The coolest March on record in Vero Beach? It was 2010, with an average temperature of 61.2 degrees, followed by 2013 (61.3 degrees) and 1968 (61.5 degrees).

280. “Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again” (1971) The Fortunes Memory: You can’t resist singing along with this one. 279. “Jumper” (1998) Third Eye Blind Memory: Became the third Top 10 single from self-titled album. I thought this band would have staying power. All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
