REARVIEW MIRROR: A look at the history of the Vero Beach post office What is now Vero Beach was once a fairly dense wilderness between the Indian River and the Allapatch Flats 10 miles west. In 1889, those living here wanted a post office because it took travel by horse or boat to reach the nearest postal facility. So, five people signed a petition and submitted it to the postmaster general, who asked for a name for the community. Sarah Gifford submitted two names, Venice and Vero. The latter was selected because it met the fourletter requirements of the Post Office Department. John T. Gifford, a former sheriff in Royalton, Vermont, who moved his family to the area because of his poor health, was named the first postmaster at an annual salary of $27.59. The post office was at his home and opened Nov. 25, 1891. He later built a store in his front yard that became the post office.

It moved several times over the years: • 1908: Into a building owned by W.J. Bass on Commerce Avenue across from the railroad station. Mail arrived by train. Fire destroyed the building, and a new post office was built. Bass was postmaster until 1910. • 1911: Postmaster James Knight moved it inside a general store near the railroad station. • 1914: Inside the Gifford Building at 19th Avenue and South Dixie. • 1924: To be at the center of activities, it moved to 20th Street at Old Dixie Highway. The post office changed its name to Vero Beach in 1925. • 1953: On 14th Avenue between 18th Street and 19th Place. • 1965: Current location opened on 13th Avenue between 20th and 21st streets. – Source: “Florida’s Hibiscus City Vero Beach,” by J. LEMMON DROPS: Many reasons to be thankful during this time of year Some rapid-fire, holiday-themed Lemmon Drops: to be living in Indian River County. I love •the I’mpacethankful of life here. So glad we don’t have to compete in
the “rat race.” I’m thankful for the beautiful weather here, especially from November through May. There’s no better place to be. I’m thankful that, for the sixth year in a row, we made it through another hurricane season without a serious threat. Knock on wood. I’m thankful there’s a height limit for buildings in Indian River County. It’s our insurance policy against becoming “another South Florida.” I’m thankful for all of the snowbirds who make their way here each year. They add a certain “spice” to the area. Most of the snowbirds I meet are appreciative and know how good they have it. I’m thankful Lois Cappelen insists on waiting until

after Thanksgiving to begin decorating for Christmas at C.J. Cannon’s. Some big-box retailers put up Christmas displays before Halloween, and it leads to shopping “fatigue.” Lois, Chuck Cannon and others transform C.J. Cannon’s into a winter wonderland for four weeks each year. Check it out next week! Russ Lemmon I’m thankful Sebastian and Fellsmere are in Indian River County. When you visit each community, it’s like taking a step back in time. I’m thankful there is a Bob Evans restaurant in Indian River County. As I always say, this is my connection to the Midwest. (Having spent the first 21 years of my life in Indiana, I’m a Midwesterner at heart.)

I’m thankful Indian River County is home to roughly •18,000 military veterans. Thank you for your service. I’m thankful for the advertisers in Lemmon Lines. •I am so heartened by the leap of faith they took in this
newsletter. If you enjoy reading this publication, please thank the advertisers you see on these eight pages. They made it possible. I’m thankful for Dolly Costarino (remember those “Dolly” ads in the first four issues?), who wanted to help me get started by placing an ad. It’s a gesture I’ll never forget. She is 94 years old and a very special friend. I’m thankful more than 500 people have given a thumbs-up to the Lemmon Lines page on Facebook. I never expected to hit a milestone like that so quickly. I’m thankful for the level of traffic in Indian River County. Most days, I drive from one end of the county to the other – and sometimes I do it more than once. I’m always befuddled when people complain about the traffic.

I’m thankful for the 18 wonderful years my wife and I •have had together. She was scared to death when I decided
to start this new venture – after all, I did leave a secure job with good benefits at the Press Journal – but she trusted my instincts. I’m thankful for everyone who helped me get this thing off the ground in October. As I look back, everything seemed to fall into place at exactly the right time. Eventually, they’ll be memories I’ll cherish – right now, everything is still a whirlwind! I’m thankful for all of the loyal readers who followed me from the Press Journal to Lemmon Lines. Almost on a daily basis now, I think back to what Paul Castraberti, the owner of The Lemon Tree restaurant, said: “I wake up every day worried that no one will walk through these doors.” I’m very appreciative that many of you are now making this a weekly habit. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Fun facts
Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.
482. “California Gurls”
(2010) Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dogg Memory: I can take Katy Perry only in short doses (and Snoop Dogg in even shorter doses), but this song is 3 minutes, 56 seconds of fun.
481. “Sherry”
The Indian River County Chamber of Commerce through the years ... 1915: Established as the Vero Beach Board of Trade 1922: Renamed the Vero Beach Chamber of Commerce 1989: Renamed the Vero Beach-Indian River County Chamber of Commerce 2004: Renamed the Indian River County Chamber of Commerce
– Source: indianriverchamber.com
(1962) Four Seasons Memory: This is one of those songs that wouldn’t make the Top 500 if it were released today. Don’t know why I like it, I just do.
480. “Your Life is Now”
(1998) John Mellencamp Memory: Love the lyrics of this underappreciated song. “Would you teach your children to tell the truth? Would you take the high road if you could choose? ... Your life is now.” All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
