REARVIEW MIRROR: A look at the history of the Vero Beach Woman’s Club The Vero Beach Woman’s Club and the first public library are synonymous. While the wood shingle building at 1534 21st St. – placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995 – was the meeting place for the club, it was built to serve a broader purpose. In February 1915, a group of 14 civicminded women met in the one hotel in town to organize a club. Their purpose was to promote cultural betterment for the community. They called themselves the Unity Club. Their first project was to establish a public library, which was something woman’s clubs around the state were doing. Club president was Irene Young, wife of Vero Beach’s first mayor, Anthony Young. Annual dues were 50 cents. The first library opened with 300 donated books on the back porch of Young’s home. But the women wanted the library to have its own building. The Indian River Farms Company, which sold reclaimed land through sales offices in Vero, Iowa

and Colorado, donated the land where the Woman’s Club building sits today. The women, who in late 1915 changed the club name to the Vero Beach Woman’s Club and became affiliated with the Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs, mortgaged the lot to pay for construction, estimated at about $1,000. With 500 donated books, the library (with a fireplace) opened in that building in 1916, sharing space with the club. The women paid the mortgage in 1920 by raising money with county fairs, card parties, bazaars and suppers. The local Red Cross organized there in 1917. In 1956, the club added the east wing with a social hall and kitchen, and served luncheons for other clubs. The library expanded and moved out in 1962. Today the Woman’s Club building can be rented for events. – Sources: ”Images of America: Vero Beach,” by Teresa Lee Rushworth; “Florida’s Hibiscus City: Vero Beach,” by J. Noble Richards.

LEMMON DROPS: What’s the biggest event in the history of Indian River County? Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting on the first Christmas card to arrive in the mail: put much stock in the radio commercial calling •The I don’t Band Perry’s upcoming appearance at Holman
Stadium “the biggest event to come to the Treasure Coast,” but it did get me thinking about what would top the list for Indian River County. In reflecting on the eight years I’ve lived here, there’s a clear No. 1 – the Blue Angels, who appeared at the 2014 Vero Beach Air Show. Their precision performance will be remembered by local residents for a long, long time. Coming in at No. 2: The Los Angeles Dodgers’ final spring training game at Dodgertown in 2008. The bright sun and a festive atmosphere made for a perfect day. What event would you put at No. 1? (Again, my list covers only the past eight years.) Maybe the appearance by The Band Perry – the popular
country group is the headliner for Saturday’s Step Up America benefit concert – deserves a spot in the Top 10. Or maybe not. I’d like to think there have been bigger events in the county. Of course, an event that probably would have been No. 1 on most lists – Gloria Estefan’s Russ Lemmon benefit concert following the backto-back hurricanes in 2004 – never took place because of a vote that will live in infamy by two members of the Vero Beach City Council. Attention, history buffs: The dedication of a state historical marker for Vero Beach’s Osceola Park neighborhood will take place Saturday at 10 a.m. It’ll be held at the corner of 19th Street and 20th Avenue. I was taken aback by something Pam Cooper,

supervisor of the Archive Center & Genealogical Department at the main library, told me recently: Every copy of Lemmon Lines will be available in the Florida history room. How cool is that? Back in Issue 2, it was mentioned that Lois Angell, who turned 105 last week, is the oldest registered voter in the county. “That name … sounded familiar to me, and on a hunch I looked her up in a list of Skidmore College alumni in this area – and there she was!” Judy Rollinson said in a Nov. 6 email. Fast forward a few weeks, and Judy, a Skidmore alumna, made the trip to a local health care facility to meet Lois. “She is amazing!” Judy said in a follow-up email. “She had some wonderful stories to tell about her days at Skidmore – guess she was quite an equestrian and spent as much time as possible riding horses there. She majored

in Secretarial Science, a typical major for women in those days. She is the same age as my parents would have been, so it was particularly fun to meet her.” A couple of weeks ago, I posted a photo of Alexander Wilson on Facebook. He is 96 years old and works at the Publix at U.S. 1 and 53rd Street. It was the first time I ever received 600 “Likes” for anything posted on Facebook. Incredible. If you’re out and about Saturday morning, please stop by the Walmart in Sebastian and say “hi.” I’ll be ringing the bell for the Salvation Army from 8 to 10 a.m. If you live in Vero Beach, there would be one bonus in making the trip: Gas is usually at least a nickel a gallon cheaper in Sebastian. Finally, an email from Vero Beach’s Charlotte Snedeker: “Just ‘learned’ the modern terminology for snowbirds heading south for the winter. It’s called the ‘Metamucil Migration.’ I learn something new every day!”

479. “Bubbly”
(2007) Colbie Caillat Memory: A simple song that puts a smile on your face. Nothing wrong with that.
478. “Walking on Broken Glass”
(1992) Annie Lennox Memory: Such a powerful voice. A memorable video, set in the 1700s, with Hugh Laurie (TV’s “House”) and John Malkovich.
Indian River County has 486 traffic cameras currently in use. Of those, 384 are positioned to detect vehicles at individual intersections so that traffic signals can adjust green-light timings, and 102 are used to monitor traffic flow at different intersections so that system-wide and signal-to-signal timings can be adjusted to improve overall traffic flow.

477. “My Sharona”
(1979) The Knack Memory: One of the last big hits from the era when AM radio was still relevant. Still remember a radio DJ comparing The Knack to the Beatles. All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
