LEMMON DROPS: If you’re not a true Republican, why not become a RINO? Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the Summer Olympics hype to begin:

• I’m a registered Republican, but I’m really a RINO –

Republican In Name Only. In presidential elections, I’ve voted for both Republican and Democratic candidates. This year, for the third time in my life, I’ll probably vote for a third-party candidate. During even-numbered years, I switch from No Party Affiliation to Republican because of the August primary. Sad but true: If you want to have a meaningful vote in the August primary, you have to be a registered Republican. (That’s particularly true this year in two elections – one is for County Commission, and the other is for State Representative.) That’s just how the game is played in Indian River County. I, for one, don’t mind making a mockery of the system – that is, becoming a registered Republican in even-numbered

years – because the system deserves to be mocked. You have until Aug. 1 to change your party affiliation for the primary. If you are not a registered Republican, I would encourage you to make the temporary switch to the GOP, only because it will allow you to vote in the “closed” races Russ Lemmon for County Commission and State Representative. The way the system is set up, they’re counting on you not caring enough to change your party affiliation to Republican for the primary. Some voter trivia, compliments of Stephanie Nelson of the Supervisor of Elections office: There are 20 voters age 100 or older (11 Republicans, 8 Democrats, 1 NPA), and all of them have a vote by mail

request on file. The oldest voter is 104. Sebastian’s Fourth of July parade is the unofficial kickoff event for the local political season. It’s considered a “must” for local candidates. This year, even Tony Young – who is running for the Vero Beach City Council – participated in the Sebastian holiday parade. I always chuckle when I hear stories about people at Bob Evans and C.J. Cannon’s asking about Table 51. (See the title of the weekly feature on page 6.) Last week at C.J. Cannon’s, Liam Hunt asked if there really is a Table 51. The table was open, so Lois Cappelen asked Liam if he wanted to sit there. He took her up on her offer. Cheers, Liam! Supposedly, an auto parts store will be going in the other half of the building currently occupied by the Humane Society’s thrift store (State Road 60 just west of 43rd Avenue). Although John McCoy, the county’s director of Current

Development, hadn’t heard about a NAPA store going in next to the thrift store, he said he wasn’t surprised. There’s another auto parts store just three blocks to the west. “With the current economy, we are seeing more autoparts stores as people keep their cars longer,” he said. Tell me about it. My car just turned over 138,000 miles. Speaking of cars, Dr. Edward Novak called with a question that he knew I wouldn’t be able to answer. (He just provided me with some food for thought because he assumed I like that kind of stuff … and I do!) “How many cars are for sale in Indian River County?” I’ll tell you, I’m amazed at the number of cars for sale at the dealers in the vicinity of U.S. 1 and Oslo Road. In addition, there are numerous dealers, big and small, all over, not to mention all of the people trying to sell their cars themselves. What’s his guess? He went with 10,000. I’d go with maybe half that number.
