LEMMON DROPS: Believe it or not, another one headed our way Eight bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the dog days of summer to commence:

• A 2-acre parcel at the southeast corner of Olso Road and

Old Dixie Highway was cleared of vegetation last week. Out of curiosity, I stopped by the County Administration Building to find out what’s going to be built at that hightraffic intersection. You won’t believe it. The land was cleared for another Dollar General store. It’ll be the 13th “dollar” store in Indian River County. (Dollar General will have five, while Dollar Tree and Family Dollar will have four apiece.) What makes this location so puzzling is that it’ll be maybe 2 miles from another Dollar General store – the one that’s still under construction just west of Velde Ford. We had a wave of drug stores built more than a decade ago, and now there’s a wave of “dollar” stores.

Please make it stop.

• Plans by C.J. Cannon’s to open a

second restaurant – called Eggsby’s – have been put on hold. Eggsby’s was to replace an existing restaurant on the mainland. Even though the parties had agreed on the purchase price, Chuck Cannon said he backed out because there was “an unexpected Russ Lemmon increase in rent” by the landlord. So, is a second restaurant still in the future for C.J. Cannon’s? “We’re not actively looking,” Chuck Cannon said. “We’ve tucked our wings in, for now.” Several years ago, the Cannon family operated four restaurants simultaneously. “That doesn’t mean you make four times the money,” he said. “You just have four times the headaches.” A suggestion for a first-time candidate for State

OUR TRUSTED CONSERVATIVE LEADER

COMMISSIONER TIM ZORC IS WORKING HARD … TO PROTECT OUR L AGOON, QUALIT Y OF LIFE, FAMILIES AND BUSINESSES. “I have called Indian River County home all my life. I understand that our Lagoon is not only a beautiful place for families to explore, but it is also a very important economic resource. Shortly into office, I started to push for solutions and because of my unified efforts we now have the Fertilizer Ordinance and expansion of stormwater projects that are benefiting our Indian River Lagoon today. We have slowed the decline but we still have much work to do” – Tim Zorc

Representative: Pick a name, and stick with it. I don’t recall ever seeing a candidate use three variations of a name on campaign signs – Greg MacKay, Gregory MacKay, and Dr. Greg MacKay. I keep waiting for the campaign signs that have been placed on the grounds of Vero Beach High School to be removed. It’s been a long wait. Gotta love the name Taco Dive, a restaurant that opened last week in downtown Vero Beach. That location is developing a reputation for “cool” names – the previous restaurant there was Counter Culture. Jake Owen’s inaugural Beach Town Music Festival is scheduled for Oct. 7-8 at the Indian River County Fairgrounds. I must admit, the lineup is better than expected – it includes the Gin Blossoms and Edwin McCain. The full lineup can be found on the festival’s website. Don’t know how long it’s going to last, but I’m loving the gas prices at the new Cumberland Farms at U.S. 1 and 17th

Street. For posterity’s sake, I note “members” were paying $1.82 a gallon. Obviously, this is a strategy Cumberland Farms uses at its new stores to entice people to enroll in the SmartPay program. It’s great having a SmartPay card when new stores open (to take advantage of the cheaper gas prices), but gas prices at the existing stores are nothing special. Now that Donald Trump is officially the Republican nominee for president, I have to treat Joe Klein (co-owner of J & J Auto Works) to lunch. I’ll tell you, I never felt more confident in a bet in my life when Joe took Trump and Ted Cruz, and I had three governors – Jeb Bush, Chris Christie and John Kasich. OK, might as well trot out my infamous “tweet” on Twitter from June 16, 2015 – the day Trump announced he was running for the Republican nomination: “Opportunity knocked for Donald Trump about 15 years ago. He should have run for president then. Nobody cares what he has to say now.”
