IT IS A DESTINATION NOT TO BE MISSED!

REARVIEW MIRROR: A look at the history of Winter Beach We've all seen the sign on U.S. 1 midway between Vero Beach and Sebastian – “Winter Beach.” On northbound U.S. 1, there's even a sign in anticipation ... "Winter Beach 7 (miles)." But you're through it before you know it. It's bounded by the Indian River on the east, 55th Street to the south, 58th Avenue to the west and 77th Street to the north. The population in 2015 was 2,067, according to suburbanstats.org. The 6.9 square-mile area of the county has been known by two other names over the years, Woodley and Quay. Then, somehow, it became Winter Beach. Here's how: It began in March 1894 as Woodley, named by settler J.T. Gray for his Georgia plantation of the same name. The designation lasted just eight years, when residents decided to rename the settlement in honor of U.S. Sen. Matthew Quay of Pennsylvania. He had a winter home in St.Lucie

Village north of Fort Pierce. He got federal money to widen and deepen the Indian River channel. That name lasted 20 years. As the community grew into two subdivisions, a developer challenged people to come up with a more appealing name for promotional purposes. A name selection committee came up with Winter Beach in 1922, after Mrs. Robert Brown of Fort Pierce submitted the name for consideration. She won a lot valued at $1,000 for her winning entry. A developer composed the slogan "Winter Beach, Where Sunshine Spends the Winter," but the town failed to grow as large as was hoped, despite the sales efforts. In 1925, Indian River County was established and Winter Beach almost became the county seat. Instead, nearby Vero had incorporated into a city and was selected. – Source: “A History of Indian River County” by Sidney P. Johnston

LEMMON DROPS: South county didn’t have to wait in line this time Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the start of the new school year:

• South county usually has to wait its turn. There’s no

library in these parts, and plans for a public high school were shelved. That’s not the case with a state-of-the-art recreation center, however. Sometime this month, the county will open the $12 million facility to the public. It’s located on Oslo Road just east of 20th Avenue. The official name is the Intergenerational Recreation Center (it doesn’t exactly flow off the tongue, does it?), but Mike Redstone, the county’s recreation director, says internally it’s known as “the IG building.” I like the name a reader gave it – “Big Red.” As the name implies, the center is for residents of all ages. “We’re very proud of it,” Redstone said during a recent tour. “It’s

not a cookie-cutter community center.” I’ll say. The first clue that it’s not a cookiecutter is the design. One reader likened it to a pirate ship. Redstone joked that his office has received calls wondering when the movie-theater was going to open. Inside, there’s a huge gymnasium with multiple courts. But most of the Russ Lemmon space in the building is devoted to multipurpose rooms – the rooms will be available for an hourly rate for meetings, banquets and even wedding receptions. The official ribbon-cutting for the facility is scheduled for Aug. 17. The public will be able to take tours of the building that same day. I would encourage you to take a tour. It’s a really cool place. Jim Mattingly, a beloved teacher at St. Helen Catholic School,

died from cancer last week. He was only 60. Back in 2011, when I was still at the Press Journal, I wrote about Jim’s “old school” approach to teaching elementary school. Students had to learn the state capitals for all 50 states and the names of the 44 U.S. presidents. (Hard to believe students aren’t required to learn either one in today’s public schools.) He helped shaped so many lives in such a positive way. He will be missed. Rest in peace, Jim. Those driving on Oslo Road have probably seen the “Store Closing Sale” banner in front of the Family Dollar store near the intersection of Olso Road and 27th Avenue. You know, the one that’s been open for only about a year. It’s going to become a Dollar Tree. (I kid you not.) That’s because Family Dollar and Dollar Tree have merged operations. Call the Senior Resource Association at 569-0760 for more information about GoLine’s “ambassadors.” A few readers have asked about the old house on the southeast corner of State Road 60 and 27th Avenue that was recently demolished. A new medical office will take its place. Note to Debbie Mayfield and Ritch Workman, both of whom have gone big-time negative in the State Senate: I now pitch your seemingly daily mailers immediately upon receipt and tune out your bash-the-opponent TV ads. Enough already! The shopping center at U.S. 1 and 53rd Street, which includes Publix and a McDonald’s, is expanding. Land has been cleared just to the southwest of the shopping center for a new Dunkin’ Donuts. The way things are going in Indian River County, I’m surprised there’s not a “Dollar Doughnuts” going there.
