LEMMON DROPS: Mexican restaurant to raise profile with new location on U.S. 1 Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the Summer Olympics to give us a break from the presidential race:

• Even though it has three Mexican restaurants in Indian

River County, Ay! Jalisco has kept a relatively low profile. That will change later this month with the opening of a new restaurant on U.S. 1 in Vero Beach. It’s in a prime location – maybe an eighth-mile south of State Road 60 – and the building certainly has a distinctive Southwestern look. The Ay! Jalisco in the Miracle Mile will close a few days before the new location opens. The other location in Vero Beach, on State Road 60 just west of downtown, will remain open, as will the one on U.S. 1 in Sebastian. Owner Pedro Nevarez said rent increases over the course of 15 years at the Miracle Mile location led him to look for a building to buy.

“We have affordable prices,” he said. “For us to pay a rent like that, it’s not easy.” With a capacity of 160, the new restaurant is actually smaller than the Miracle Mile location (220 capacity). For those wondering about the origin of the Ay! Jalisco name, there’s a simple explanation. Pedro’s wife, Russ Lemmon Gloria, is from Jalisco, which is a state in Mexico. Ay! is “just a happy expression,” Pedro said. There are nine restaurants and one convenience store in the Ay! Jalisco family. It all started with the restaurant in Palm Bay in 1995. Pedro says the inspiration for the building’s Southwestern look came after visiting Arizona and New Mexico. It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite structures on U.S. 1.

• Gotta love the name of the barbecue restaurant getting ready to open in downtown Vero Beach – Swine & Co. • A longtime hair salon in Royal Palm Pointe has a new

owner and a new name. Cuts N’ Such, which has been around since 1992, is now called Bliss Beauty Bar. The new owner, Kelly Bailey, who moved here from Minnesota two years ago, has been a stylist for 29 years. The former owner of Cuts N’ Such, Julie Jacko, isn’t going anywhere. She will be a stylist at Bliss. Biggest business shocker of the summer: The No Name Sports Bar in Sebastian is now smoke-free. It’s never easy for bar owners to flip the switch to smoke-free, so kudos to Damien Gilliams for doing so and advertising it on the marquee on U.S. 1. Back in June, I mentioned 94-year-old Armand Zarrella completed a successful skydive in Sebastian. He also did it when he turned 90.

Sad news: Armand died last month.

• Millie Hirsch packed a lot of information (and a lot of

exclamation marks) in her one-paragraph email: “Loved reading your lemon-colored paper at Bob Evans. I agree, too many Dollar stores (I don’t use them). My other gripe is mattress stores! Yikes! Vero is becoming the Capital of Dollar stores and mattress stores. How embarrassing for our fine city! One more comment: I hate the design of the new IG building [the Intergenerational Recreation Center]. It’s the ugliest building in Vero. Why didn’t they design it to look like our beautiful county buildings? Sometimes I wonder about our county department that approves architectural drawings. They need to hire me! LOL.” I sent Clarke Olmstead an email last month wishing him a happy 67th birthday. I jokingly told him that he’s getting old. He agreed, and said he knew he was old when he sold his Porsche and bought a pick-up because it’s easier to get in and out of a pick-up.

Top 500 countdown Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down. 215. “Total Eclipse of the Heart” (1983) Bonnie Tyler Memory: With this lengthy song (4 minutes, 30 seconds), she became the first Welsh singer to have a No. 1 hit on Billboard’s pop chart. 214. “I Go Crazy” (1975) Paul Davis Memory: Such a soothing ballad. 213. “We Didn’t Start the Fire” (1989) Billy Joel Memory: To me, the way he crafted this song (with historical snapshots serving as the lyrics) is pure genius. All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com
