LEMMON DROPS: Business finding it tough to compete against Cumberland Farms Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the next twist in the presidential race:

• By selling gas much cheaper than any place along U.S. 1

in Indian River County, the new Cumberland Farms in Vero Beach (at 17th Street) hasn’t been very neighborly to a competing convenience store across the street. Business is down 50 percent at Miller’s Neighborhood Market since Cumberland Farms opened at the end of June. Cumberland is selling unleaded gas for $1.81 to “members” and $1.91 for “non-members.” The price at Miller’s is $2.09. Miller’s tried lowering its price, but Cumberland followed suit. “We cannot compete with them on gas – they will sell at cost, or below cost,” said Marlen Hurter, who took over Miller’s Neighborhood Market in August. “It pulls the customers in the lot. They don’t come over here.” Miller’s can’t survive at the current rate, she said. She

gives the business “about six months” to turn things around. Hurter, who lives in Switzerland most of the year, has thought about walking over to Cumberland Farms and asking: “Do you want to kill a local business? Is that ‘success’?” Hurter, who owns a handful of successful businesses overseas, Russ Lemmon will be in Vero Beach until Aug. 29 trying to stabilize things. (See the ad at the bottom of the front page as an example of her determination.) “I’m fighting the battle. I’m not ready to pack my bags and go,” she said. “Normally what I touch turns into a success. I had such a good feeling about this business. “I cannot believe that it’s not possible to turn it around.” Hurter says she spent $20,000 in upgrades and repairs

when she took over the convenience store in August. The store, with original owner Gus Miller, opened in 2007. “The business had started to bloom,” she said of the time prior to Cumberland Farms opening its new store on June 30. Her next strategic move is to stop selling diesel fuel and start selling non-ethanol gas. Hurter just shrugged her shoulders over the prospect of Wawa opening a new store in a few months. “It’s going to hit Cumberland,” she said. “It couldn’t hurt us any worse.” I would encourage you to stop by Miller’s Neighborhood Market and introduce yourself to Marlen (pronounced “Marlene). She’s the type of business owner we need in Vero. If I get one more mailer attacking either Ritch Workman or Debbie Mayfield, I’m voting Mike Thomas in the State Senate District 17 race. I’m not kidding. Interesting that Florida Power & Light gave Vero Beach

an Aug. 25 deadline for the partial sale – FPL is offering $30 million for the 3,500 customers from Indian River Shores. That’s because Jay Kramer, who is considered the swing vote, is running for the County Commission in the Aug. 30 primary. It’s hard to see him winning a countywide election if he votes against it. Longtime readers know I love making election predictions. You’ll see them here next week. September is going to be a big month for the Vero Beach Book Center, with Dave Barry (Sept. 8) and Carl Hiaasen (Sept. 18) both scheduled for book-signings. Barry’s event is so big that it’ll be held at the Waxlax Performing Arts Center on the St. Ed’s campus. The biggest surprise of the week? Seeing two signs in support of Gary Johnson for president on U.S. 1 just north of 26th Street. Shawn Elliott, a mechanic at the nearby High Tide repair shop, put them out. “He’s the sane choice in an insane race right now,” he said.
