During a time when newspapers are supposedly dying, Benjamin is building a mini-empire of print publications. The land has been cleared on the north side of State Road 60 (just east of I-95) that will be the site for a new Wawa and McDonald’s. It’ll probably be a few months before building commences, though. The new McDonald’s will be owned and operated by Conrado Enterprises, which operates four McDonald’s in Indian River County. (This one will replace the McDonald’s at Vero Outlets.) Joe Conrado anticipates the actual building of the restaurant to begin in January. “Once we break ground, we’ll be up in 90 days,” he said. Just want to give a shout-out to the Supervisor of Elections office and the poll workers for a job well done during early voting. Also, a round of applause for the candidates who put their lives on hold to run for office. Mark Rodolico, who is running for County Commission, emailed me a photo of a campaign sign used in Fellsmere.

• •

He said it’s the only local political sign with the words in Spanish. “I hope you will acknowledge it for what it is – a step in the right direction,” he said. I didn’t think the attack ads against Erin Grall could be any worse than in 2010, which was the first time she ran for State Representative … but I was wrong. Once again, the Florida Chamber of Commerce made a fool of itself with the over-the-top attack ads. By joining in the mudslinging, first-time candidate Lange Sykes didn’t make a very good first impression. As regular readers know, I’ve been critical of the growing number of “dollar” stores in Indian River County. Joel Tyson, who loves life in Fellsmere (he’s a member of the city council there), says he’s glad Fellsmere has a Dollar General store. “It’s been a godsend here. It’s packed all the time,” he said. “We refer it as the Fellsmere Mall.”

Top 500 countdown Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down. 206. “Viva la Vida” (2008) Coldplay Memory: A rarity in that the song title is nowhere to be found in the lyrics. 205. “Lonesome Loser” (1979) Little River Band Memory: A Top 10 hit by one of the most underrated groups from that era. 204. “Theme from ‘Happy Days’ ” (1976) Pratt & McClain Memory: Forty years later, I still remember every scene from the opening of the TV show.

Fun facts The number of citations and warnings issued by Indian River County’s Animal Control division has dropped dramatically in recent years. During the 2012-13 fiscal year, Animal Control issued 415 citations and 1,121 warnings. Two years later, the division issued 279 citations and 480 warnings. – Source: Indian River County
