LEMMON DROPS: It’s been a busy summer for commercial construction activity Eight bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Nicole to be evicted on “Big Brother”:
• September is usually a “dead” month in Vero Beach.
This year, though, there’s all kinds of construction activity. The latest groundbreaking took place in the Miracle Mile Plaza’s parking lot (immediately west of the Wells Fargo Bank). It’s for a two-story ABC liquor store. ABC will be closing its 1970s-ish store in the nearby Vero Plaza to move into a new structure, which will have 10,000 square feet on the first floor and 4,000 square feet (for storage) on the second floor. ABC is hoping the move will be complete during the first quarter of 2017. Another project that soon will be turning heads is a 650unit storage facility between U.S. 1 and the railroad tracks just north of 4th Street. The tentative name is Vero Beach Self Storage.
The owner, William Munn, says he hopes to have it open by April 1. Meanwhile, much progress has been made on two projects on U.S. 1 – the much-anticipated Wawa and an assistedliving facility – as well as the huge church being built in the Miracle Mile area. And, of course, don’t forget the two Russ Lemmon new Dollar General stores coming to high-traffic locations in the southern part of the county. John Kuczek offers some words of caution: “This area is growing, just hope it doesn’t become another traffic congested area similar to what you find south of here.” Charlie Wilson, who has long been the top campaign strategist in Indian River County, says he has managed his last political campaign. “I participated in my first election campaign when I was

15,” he said. “That was 50 years ago – 50 years in battle is long enough.” Wilson has also stepped down as chairman of the Vero Beach Chamber of Commerce. Let history show that, in 2009, Wilson was the person who led the revolt against Vero Beach Utilities, whose rates were more than 30 percent higher than Florida Power & Light. So, how did I fare with election predictions? I finished with a 7-2 record – having missed on the victories by David Nolte (Property Appraiser) and Debbie Mayfield (State Senate). Election trivia: Political candidates who advertised in Lemmon Lines from the July 5 issue on were 5-0. (As Donald Trump might say, I like winners.) In an effort to reduce the number of those annoying mailers before the Nov. 8 issue, I switched back to No Party Affiliation the day after the primary. As is the case in evennumbered years, it was fun being a registered Republican

while it lasted. Four restaurants had some “down” time recently to gear up for the upcoming season. Kountry Kitchen was closed part of last week and C.J. Cannon’s is closed part of this week for renovations. Sammy’s Mediterranean Café and the Barefoot Café used the week before Labor Day for vacation. As a follow-up to something I wrote a few months ago, Outback Steakhouse is definitely moving near the new Chick-fil-A and Olive Garden. We’re talking probably early 2017 before that happens, though. Then, Outback will close its restaurant on U.S. 1. It appears Dixie Cream Donuts (located on 17th Street about a block west of U.S. 1) has closed. Thanks to Melissa Morales for that info. No word if Dixie Cream, which has stores in counties to the south, has left Indian River County for good. Does that leave Tasty-O as the only locally owned doughnut shop in Vero Beach? If so, wow!

Reflecting on the 100th issue of Lemmon Lines As I hope the ad at the bottom of the next page conveys, I have an “attitude of gratitude” about reaching this milestone. I realize how fortunate I am to be able to do what I do for a living. Publishing a newsletter is not rocket science. I love the simplicity of the weekly routine – you fill the pages with content, email the file to the printer, pick up the copies the next day, and then distribute it. That said, there is tremendous pressure. Advertisers are counting on me each week to get the current issue in the hands of readers. I’m not going to let them down. Yes, loyal readers like you are vital to the success of Lemmon Lines. However, the publication would not exist without the support of advertisers. Advertising revenue is what pays the bills – from a freelance graphic artist (thank you, Larisa!) to the costs associated with printing and distribution – and allows me to earn a living. While I sometimes miss the “security” of working for a daily

newspaper, I’m glad I left in September 2014. As I’ve said before, I didn’t leave the newspaper business… the newspaper business left me. It’s a “digital” world now. Publishing Lemmon Lines has been the most satisfying professional experience of my life. I love every aspect of this venture – well, everything except selling ads. Oh, what I wouldn’t give to find someone to take over the advertising side of the business. Finding the right match has been much harder than I ever imagined. The one benefit of selling ads is getting to know business owners and managers. That’s why I’m so thankful for the support of the local businesses listed in the ad at the bottom of the next page. Seven have been with me from the beginning, and two others since Issue 3. And then there’s the exceptional loyalty demonstrated by the nine other businesses listed in the ad. When you’re in my shoes, you realize we really are all in this together.

Top 500 countdown Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down. 203. “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” (1977) Meat Loaf Memory: In doing research for this song, I learned it peaked at only No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Strange, because it’s an all-time classic. 202. “Stand” (1989) R.E.M. Memory: Although the lyrics have no nutritional value, it’s still a “fun” song. Memorable video, too. 201. “Year of the Cat” (1976) Al Stewart Memory: My freshman year in college! Good times.
