LEMMON DROPS: Business owner offers struggling convenience store a pat on back Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for early voting to commence in Florida:

• If you’ve read Lemmon Lines on a regular basis, you know

Miller’s Neighborhood Market (southwest quadrant of U.S. 1 and 17th Street) is fighting for its life – because the new Cumberland Farms across the street is selling gas for the lowest price around. The owner of Miller’s, Marlen Hurter, says business is down 50 percent in the three months since Cumberland Farms opened. Last week, when I stopped by Miller’s to drop off copies of the new issue, manager Amy Davis told me about a recent visitor to the store. It was none other than Wiley Sifford Sr., the owner of the nearby Sifford’s Service Center, a U.S. 1 fixture for more than a quarter-century. “It was so nice of him to stop by,” Amy said. “He really gave us a boost. We really appreciate what he did.”

It’s a great story of neighbor helping neighbor, so I went to Sifford’s to talk with Wiley. (He wasn’t there, but I met him the next day at C.J. Cannon’s. He’s the subject of this week’s “Meet me at Table 51” feature on page 6.) So, why did he stop by Miller’s? “I keep passing it, and there’s nobody Russ Lemmon at the pumps,” he said. “I just feel bad for them. That store is beautiful.” If you’ve ever met Wiley Sifford, you know his concern for Miller’s is genuine. “I’m down a lot of gallons, too,” he said. As if Cumberland Farms isn’t formidable enough, a new Wawa is on the way a few blocks to the south. “It’s unfortunate for all these mom-and-pop stores,” he said. “We don’t have the population to support a Cumberland Farms and a Wawa – which means all of the small guys are

going to lose.” During the past year, there has been an invasion of “corporate” stores – such as Dollar General Store, auto parts stores and mattress stores. Lest we forget about the original corporate behemoth, Walmart. “They have no feeling for the community,” he said. Got to admit, I was pretty impressed with the community’s efforts to prepare for Hurricane Matthew. As I said on Twitter, we had our “game face” on a few days beforehand. Having lived here for nearly 10 years, I’ve lost count of the number of eateries that have set up shop in the shack-shaped building just west of The Patio restaurant. The latest attempt is by Peter and Lydia Schaeperkoetter with Pizza Mia. They are experienced in the business, having once owned three restaurants on the same block in New York (Long Island). By the way, Pizza Mia is named for their 10-year-old daughter. The months-long construction at the intersection of

Aviation Boulevard and Airport Drive has been annoying, but, in the end, something that’s sorely needed will remain – a traffic signal. So, I asked the aforementioned Lydia Schaeperkoetter of Pizza Mia to spell her last name. After she said the letters “S-c-h-a-e-p-e-r,” I put my pen down. “It’s not done,” she said, “… k-o-e-t-t-e-r.” “Geez,” I said. “Glad I didn’t have that name in elementary school!” Mark Santangelo, owner of the popular Kountry Kitchen restaurant, thought he was going to have a relaxing getaway to Niagara Falls – after all, it was only his second vacation during the past six years. However, the looming Hurricane Matthew ruined the plan. “I’ve been on the phone for three days,” he said from Niagara Falls as the hurricane churned toward Florida. “I’ve had a headache every morning by 10. I can’t believe it. “Story of my life.”

Top 500 countdown Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down. 188. “Night Moves” (1976) Bob Seger Memory: Little did I know at the time that he would become one of my all-time favorite singers. 187. “6th Avenue Heartache” (1996) The Wallflowers Memory: Lead singer Jakob Dylan (Bob’s son) wrote this song when he was 18 years old … I mistakenly thought he would have hits for the next few decades. 186. “Kentucky Rain” (1970) Elvis Presley Memory: A soulful, “storyteller” song. All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com
