LEMMON DROPS: John’s Island resident went extra mile to try and stop Trump Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Cubs to reach the World Series for the first time in 71 years:
• As of now, a Republican will be receiving Hal Oberkotter’s
vote for president on Nov. 8. No surprise there, as the John’s Island resident is lifelong member of the GOP. But he won’t be voting for Donald Trump. “I will probably write in the one person I feel is most qualified – Condoleezza Rice,” he said. Like many people (myself included), Oberkotter can’t bring himself to vote for either Trump or Hillary Clinton. “I feel Trump is an embarrassment to our country and will cost the GOP in Senate, House and state races,” he said. So, why not cross party lines and vote for Clinton? “I am certainly in the ‘Never Hillary’ camp,” he said. “She has shown as Secretary of State: 1) Bad judgment with use of private, nonsecure email; 2) Bad decisions in Benghazi; 3) Cover-up
of what she did by deleting emails; and 4) Obfuscation of investigation.” What he cares about now is the margin of victory. “I assume Hillary will win but feel it is essential whichever of the two unqualified wins, he/she should not be given a mandate or hopefully even a majority of votes to Russ Lemmon show lack of approval,” he said. Oberkotter, 69, believes nominating Trump was a colossal mistake by the Republican Party. He did all he could to block it. He was practically a one-man Super PAC for the “Never Trump” movement within the party. In the weeks leading up to the convention, he spent about $82,000 on newspaper ads imploring the Republican National Committee to stop Trump. The ads appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Times, the Washington Standard and the Washington Examiner.

“I tried to target my ads to politicians and party leaders, not the general public,” he said. Just like the ads he placed in 2012 taking President Barack Obama to task, Oberkotter’s anti-Trump ads read like a newspaper editorial. They are civil (that’s the reason I love them) and very persuasive. Oberkotter has no plans to run an anti-Trump ad before the general election. After riding out Hurricane Matthew in our home, this much I know: If those were Category 1 winds, I certainly don’t want to experience Category 4 gusts (as some TV meteorologists predicted we would receive). Kudos to the Church of Christ (3300 block of westbound State Road 60) for this message on its outside sign: “Thank you power workers for everything!” Yes, local and out-of-area crews did a remarkable job of getting us up and running again. I wish the same thing could be said about Comcast. Our electricity returned 32 hours ahead of cable.

• The “future” is coming soon to the McDonald’s on U.S. 1
just north of Oslo Road. Before the end of the month, it’ll become the second McDonald’s in the county to have customers order on a touchscreen. Better get used to touchscreen ordering, folks, as that’s the way Wawa does it. OK, let’s hear it again for electricity returning so soon after the hurricane: “I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone at FPL for restoring my power in 10 hours,” Millie Hirsch wrote. “FPL is the best!” Agreed. Finally, some food for thought regarding Donald Trump from the aforementioned Hal Oberkotter: “I strongly believe that we must have values as the basis of our political choices. I believe in Judeo-Christian values but welcome others from whom we can learn. I believe in American values also. I think Donald should study the meaning of the Latin E Pluribus Unum.”

Top 500 countdown Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down. 185. “Under Pressure” (1981) Queen with David Bowie Memory: A superstar collaboration, and one of the most recognizable bass riffs in rock history. 184. “It Must Have Been Love” (1990) Roxette Memory: Although it was originally released in Europe as a Christmas song, it became a hit because it was part of the soundtrack for the movie “Pretty Woman.” 183. “If You Could Read My Mind” (1970) Gordon Lightfoot Memory: A ballad by a singer with a distinctive voice.
Fun facts For single-family home sales this year, the median number of days between the listing date and the closing date has been between 87 and 115 days. (The low number was in April, and the high number was in January.) In August, the median number of days between the listing and closing dates was 98 – a reduction of three days from the previous August.
