LEMMON DROPS: Vero Beach-based concert promoter has big plans Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting trying to figure out why “The Walking Dead” is so popular:
• Melissa Morales sent an email a few months ago asking
if I knew the story behind the scheduling of a Switchfoot concert in Vero Beach. She was stoked for the concert. Meanwhile, I felt like an “old fogie” – because I had never heard of the band. (After watching a couple of videos on YouTube, I can see why Melissa, who is in her mid-20s, purchased tickets in May for the Nov. 6 concert at Vero Beach High School’s Performing Arts Center.) Switchfoot has three concerts scheduled in Florida – it’ll also make stops in St. Petersburg and Fort Lauderdale. So, why Vero Beach? Blink, and I’m sitting in front of Cameron Mays and Brad Bacon at C.J. Cannon’s. They are full-time concert promoters. Cameron is the founder of Next Level Productions, and Brad is the marketing director.
To answer Melissa’s original question, Next Level Productions brought Switchfoot to Vero Beach. Supposedly, the band members love to surf at the Sebastian Inlet. “They love to come to Vero Beach because of the atmosphere,” Cameron said. The Performing Arts Center has Russ Lemmon 1,012 seats. Popular Christian singer Michael W. Smith is scheduled to play there on Jan. 22. Again, Next Level Productions is the concert promoter. Being a concert promoter is a lot more stressful than you might imagine. “What you don’t see is the risk,” Cameron said. Just to break even, they usually have to sell tens of thousands of dollars in tickets. Next Level Productions is currently promoting eight concerts in the Southeast. The “breakeven” figures range

from $22,000 to $100,000. “That’s a lot of tickets to sell,” he said. While money is important, Next Level Productions has a higher calling. “We are a ministry, and that’s why we do it,” Cameron said. They are not affiliated with any church. Cameron and Brad have been promoting 12 to 24 concerts per year. “Hopefully, that will increase dramatically in the future,” Brad said. So I’m reading a recent issue of the AARP magazine, and what do I see? A full-page ad placed by the Sebastian River Chamber of Commerce, urging people to come for a visit. Money well spent, if you ask me. My wife and I used to be once-a-week regulars at the former JPMatty’s restaurant in Sebastian. That’s because Jerry Peterman and his wife, Linda, were so welcoming. They sold the restaurant in 2014. Sad news: Jerry died on Oct. 22. (A memorial service is

scheduled for Nov. 12 at the United Church of Sebastian.) Best story of the week? In recounting his trip to Utah for a national softball tournament, Tom Lowther said one of the teams he played against included Jose Canseco at shortstop. (Canseco is a former All-Star in the big leagues.) Speaking of former big leaguers, Fernando Arroyo will be the featured speaker at the Nov. 11 Presbyterian Men’s FOCUS luncheon. If you’re interested in attending, call the church at 772-562-9088. Had to laugh at the car that was exiting the recycling center on Old Dixie Highway. The car had two magnetic stickers on the side – one was for Darrell Rivers (who ran for sheriff in 2016) and the other was for Bill McMullen (who ran for sheriff in 2012). No love for Sheriff Deryl Loar on that car. Raise your hand if you agree with the sentiment Joy Ann Coll expressed in her “tweet” on Twitter: “Voted early today and feel so relieved. In my 44 years of voting, have to say this is the worst election ever!”

Top 500 countdown Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down. 179. “You Can’t Change That” (1979) Raydio Memory: If this one doesn’t put you in a good mood, nothing will. 178. “Sleep’s Dark and Silent Gate” (1976) Jackson Browne Memory: The only song in the countdown that was never released as a single. A gem within my all-time favorite album, “The Pretender.” 177. “Lost in Love” (1980) Air Supply Memory: Not many men would admit to liking Air Supply, but that’s OK. All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com
